He couldn't understand English so I had to translate for him but he was astonished by this vehicle and explained to me in full how the choke mechanism actually worked. A small, but true Isetta story from the cold European winter of 1962/63: A woman in a small village came into labor, and her husband drove her in his Isetta into the town to the clinic. The child was born on the way (while driving over a railroad bridge, about 1 mile from the clinic). As they arrived at the clinic, the clinic staff decided it was too cold outside to open the car, so they ordered him to drive directly into the bed elevator. Arrived at the 2nd floor, they now opened the front door and got mother and healthy child out of the car.
Not german engineered. It was produced under ISO licence. They just ruined the beautiful original bubble shaped window, and saved themselves from bankrupcy. Basically, it was the Smart car concept: cheap to run, minimal sized twin seater citycar.
"What happens if you get in an accident in the Isetta and the door won't open?" Well unless the other vehicle was a bicycle, you'll be dead so it won't matter.
The Reasons grocery store near me sell these really cool car coolers. It's basically a small-ish version of an old car that's really a cooler. Now I want to get the frame on one of these & somehow turn it into a cooler for really fancy parties. Maybe make it so you open the door to access the cooler part. But unfortunately I have none of the technical skills needed to make it. Otherwise I just might. I bet there's people out there who would rent it for big parties. I was going to suggest car show but they might just beat you up for it. Still buying your beer or in my case soda from an actual old car cooler would way more fun than those $200 ones Reasors has.
My uncle drove the Isetta from Germany to Italy taking the old Gotthard road in the 1960ies. He managed to store my aunt and my cousin, a big tent, an inflatable boat, clothes and what else was needed for a two-week-holiday inside (!) the car. He did this four years in a row except that in the second year he got a luggage rack that was placed on the spare tire on which he put the boat on. These guys were real adventurers!
That Isetta was extremely badly maintained. I owned one back in the early 1960s, so I know a bit about them. First, that steering play was due to badly worn out bushes in the horizontal steering linkage. Steering should be taught and immediate. Second the brakes should be super sharp, and I used to have to be careful not to brake too hard because it would splat my passenger against the windscreen. Maybe that's because the British version was fitted with the same brakes as a Mini, but the Isetta was much lighter. Third, it should have no problem with that hill. There are two very steep hills in my town, and my Isetta could get up them in low gear and with a passenger on board. Top speed on the flat should be 50 mph also, so I guess yours has a worn out engine. The British version had only one rear wheel to comply with British law. The 4 wheel version required a full car licence. I bought mine because I had only a motorcycle licence, and was fed up with getting wet in our rainy weather. I just did not earn enough at the time to afford to buy and run a proper car. I loved that little car that was so much fun to drive, and have considered getting one as a second car, but in good condition they change hands now for £15,000 (19,000 USD) or more as collectors items. I'm sure that if you tested a1960 Cadillac with a knackered engine, shot streering bushes, and seriously faulty brakes, you would be just as unimpressed.
I agree with most of the above, try a properly maintained sample. Mine was the three wheel version, would touch 70 MPH go up any hills, including the steepest in Sheffield England, and handle pretty well. One of the best handling 3 wheelers made. Wish I still had the Isetta, was terrific fun to own and drive.

Better than a motorcycle if you wanted to stay dry (not as cool but that's another matter). To defeat Hitler we destroyed the entire infrastructure of the German economy. It took a while before BMW could produce vehicles approaching today's standards. Messerschmidt also produced a bubble car (as they were called) even smaller than this Italian design and closely resembling the cockpit of a fighter plane.

The Isatta was 50 years ahead of it's time. The ideal town car. Cheap to run. Cheap to own. Simple mechanically design. Was a stepping stone for the next generation. Please be reminded the '50 were the years of reconstruction after WWII. Cute and very practical.

Good look at the car, but there was a 3 wheeled version made by BMW specifically for the UK market as regulations in Britain were different to the rest of Europe at the time regarding the use of a motorcycle license.
It was classed as a tricycle, or the same as a motorcycle with sidecar, for licence and tax purposes. To meet that specification it was allowed only 3 wheels, must weigh no more than 8 cwt (896 lbs), and have no reverse gear. The Isetta did have a reverse gear, but in the British version a pin was fitted in the gearbox to prevent engagement. The canvass sun roof helped it meet the weight regulation. During the time that I owned mine the pointless reverse gear legislation was changed, probably due to protests from owners. All I had to do was unscrew a plug in the gearbox casing, pull out a steel pin, and replace the plug, et voila, reverse gear.
In UK everything with less than 4 wheels was taxed as motorcycle and much cheaper then. The Isetta sunroof was necessary in Germany to be road legal. You need to come out of or inside the car after a frontal crash. No luxury, just the emergency exit.
We need to call Clarkson, Hammond and May and have them put these in a race: Yugo, Isetta and Lada! I don't know who will ask for which car but I think May would prefer the Isetta, Hammond the Lada and Clarkson the Yugo.

As an Isetta owner, I enjoy pulling into a car show and watching the people leave the muscle car area and come to see the Isetta. The best part is letting the kids sit inside it with their parents .
I absolutely agree. I don't see why I'd need anything bigger to just get to and back from work, and maybe grabbing a small bag of groceries along the way. Of course I'd want a big family car for the weekend, but I'd be more than happy with something this small with an updated heater and a small A/C. Almost as small as a motorcycle, but still protecting you from the weather or a crash, at least better than bikers' clothes. One doesn't need to burn all that excess gas to haul a 5 seater chassis going to work alone. Parking in tight spaces gets easy too. Also 250cc today can give you ridiculous amounts of power for something as small as this. With a modernized suspension that reduces body roll, it would easily keep up with everyone else on a highway during morning traffic. Or there could be an electric version, with an added solar sunroof option. You could get a lot of range from a battery the size of its tank, when you have a chassis this small. I can see lots of advantages to reviving this super small size class of cars.
I feel like we have to talk about the fact that this car has a full size spare tyre, yet manufacturers of modern land yachts clame to not be abled to fit one in anymore.

Here in the UK the BMW Isetta had only three wheels due to the laws regarding motorcycles, I believe it was a license built one from BMW. My mum had one in the early 60s in the same colour as the one you drove and she would go everywhere in hers but I imagine not very quickly...

BMW did make 3 wheeled versions. We owned one!..it's the car I first drove as a 10 year old. The twist and twist and twist for the engine cover is because...it's a bolt!...this is a US spec version as European versions were different. They had 4 forward gears and reverse and did 80mpg. Loved that little car!
I had a sky blue one with 3 wheels and it was a BMW Isetta I drove that car to work and back every day across Edinburgh for 3 years, it was great and it had some take off I can tell you, left all the other cars standing at the lights. My friend and I used to go all over Scotland in it Such fun to remember that time, of course I was only 17 when I got it after a year on a Triumph 800 motorbike. The joys of youth! Hi Dough, THANKS a lot for that so detailed, interesting, and nice funny vid about my first car I owned in 1968. Earlier, had no camera, no cellphones of course, I got no pictures but good memories.I drove it half year only. I changed the rims inside-out on all four wheels then the Isetta was looking like a wide beast. I drove like hell with it as far as you could do. At the club I collected at night 10 DM (5$ approx) then I turned the car a speed of 40-50 in front of the club by 180 degrees by using the little hand break. Sometimes the car went up on two wheels but with the wider distance of wheels per axle it was easy to handle back on road. After half year having fun a older person watched my and bought me another car (NSU TT) with which I started rally racing in German Championship. I am a typical German Engineer, lived for engineering and construction over 25 years in foreign countries outside Europe. I am 100% and successful, made a big invention in Texas (oil & gas) and based on that and conversion into private photography cameras (FullFormat), I still do private model photography in infrared technology. I am retired, 72 years old, active and healthy, latest kids are 1 and 3 years old and I live for retirement in Kenya. Thanks again, regards

You got it. People criticising it just don't realise how poor Europeans were in the post war period. Ordinary families could not afford to buy cars at all. BMW bought this design from Italy to provide a car for Germans who could not even afford a Beetle, and it sold well throughout Europe. Our economies only started to recover in the late 1950s. Here in the UK sales of real cars started to take off about 1959. Many people who had cars pre-war were still keeping them going until then, and the used car market was suddenly flooded with cheap very well maintained pre-war cars, selling for about £5 (say around $15).

A friend's dad had an Isetta and my buddy was allowed to drive it and one day in 2007 I sat in the passenger seat. It was really an experience, it rattled, stank, was loud and very wobbly. Have rarely had so much fun in a car. Fortunately, we do not have mountains and hills in northwest Germany. 🤭Now at 34 years old I would barely make it in or out of there at all. 😂
Sorry but one of your statementsabout them being 4-wheelers is wrong if you're talking about the UK reather than the US. I owned and drove one of these for a year or so in the late 1960s. Mine had one wheel at the back and two at the front, so it was a pretty stable three-wheeler which was counted as a 'motor trycicle' in the UK, which meant that I could drive it on a motorcycle driving licence and pay less road tax, which I did. The ones with two rear wheels never took on in the UK as they were classed as proper cars and needed a proper car licence. Mine was great and went very well (60mph fairly easily and 70 flat out). It's easy to criticise them all these years later but at the time they were useful. Mine never faltered on hills even with 3 teenagers in it going uphill. It was a 300cc BMW motorbike engine which was pretty good.
At the time, if you didn't have an Isetta you most likely had a motorcycle and looked envious at the guys with an Isetta hauling along all the girls on rainy days.

The Isatta was 50 years ahead of it's time. The ideal town car. Cheap to run. Cheap to own. Simple mechanically design. Was a stepping stone for the next generation. Please be reminded the '50 were the years of reconstruction after WWII. Cute and very practical.

Good look at the car, but there was a 3 wheeled version made by BMW specifically for the UK market as regulations in Britain were different to the rest of Europe at the time regarding the use of a motorcycle license.
That's the same rule that applied to the Reliant Robin I think.
It was classed as a tricycle, or the same as a motorcycle with sidecar, for licence and tax purposes. To meet that specification it was allowed only 3 wheels, must weigh no more than 8 cwt (896 lbs), and have no reverse gear. The Isetta did have a reverse gear, but in the British version a pin was fitted in the gearbox to prevent engagement. The canvass sun roof helped it meet the weight regulation. During the time that I owned mine the pointless reverse gear legislation was changed, probably due to protests from owners. All I had to do was unscrew a plug in the gearbox casing, pull out a steel pin, and replace the plug, et voila, reverse gear.
In UK everything with less than 4 wheels was taxed as motorcycle and much cheaper then.
The Isetta sunroof was necessary in Germany to be road legal. You need to come out of or inside the car after a frontal crash. No luxury, just the emergency exit.

I absolutely agree. I don't see why I'd need anything bigger to just get to and back from work, and maybe grabbing a small bag of groceries along the way. Of course I'd want a big family car for the weekend, but I'd be more than happy with something this small with an updated heater and a small A/C. Almost as small as a motorcycle, but still protecting you from the weather or a crash, at least better than bikers' clothes. One doesn't need to burn all that excess gas to haul a 5 seater chassis going to work alone. Parking in tight spaces gets easy too. Also 250cc today can give you ridiculous amounts of power for something as small as this. With a modernized suspension that reduces body roll, it would easily keep up with everyone else on a highway during morning traffic. Or there could be an electric version, with an added solar sunroof option. You could get a lot of range from a battery the size of its tank, when you have a chassis this small. I can see lots of advantages to reviving this super small size class of cars.

Here in the UK the BMW Isetta had only three wheels due to the laws regarding motorcycles, I believe it was a license built one from BMW.
My mum had one in the early 60s in the same colour as the one you drove and she would go everywhere in hers but I imagine not very quickly...

BMW did make 3 wheeled versions. We owned one!..it's the car I first drove as a 10 year old. The twist and twist and twist for the engine cover is because...it's a bolt!...this is a US spec version as European versions were different. They had 4 forward gears and reverse and did 80mpg. Loved that little car!

I had a sky blue one with 3 wheels and it was a BMW Isetta I drove that car to work and back every day across Edinburgh for 3 years, it was great and it had some take off I can tell you, left all the other cars standing at the lights. My friend and I used to go all over Scotland in it Such fun to remember that time, of course I was only 17 when I got it after a year on a Triumph 800 motorbike. The joys of youth! I made mine my own by sticking 2 huge eyes on the front. Thanks for the memory, I couldn’t stop laughing at all your antics! I never had any problems with hills haha.!

Hi Dough, THANKS a lot for that so detailed, interesting, and nice funny vid about my first car I owned in 1968. Earlier, had no camera, no cellphones of course, I got no pictures but good memories.I drove it half year only. I changed the rims inside-out on all four wheels then the Isetta was looking like a wide beast. I drove like hell with it as far as you could do. At the club I collected at night 10 DM (5$ approx) then I turned the car a speed of 40-50 in front of the club by 180 degrees by using the little hand break. Sometimes the car went up on two wheels but with the wider distance of wheels per axle it was easy to handle back on road.
After half year having fun a older person watched my and bought me another car (NSU TT) with which I started rally racing in German Championship.
I am a typical German Engineer, lived for engineering and construction over 25 years in foreign countries outside Europe. I am 100% and successful, made a big invention in Texas (oil & gas) and based on that and conversion into private photography cameras (FullFormat), I still do private model photography in infrared technology. I am retired, 72 years old, active and healthy, latest kids are 1 and 3 years old and I live for retirement in Kenya.

You got it. People criticising it just don't realise how poor Europeans were in the post war period. Ordinary families could not afford to buy cars at all. BMW bought this design from Italy to provide a car for Germans who could not even afford a Beetle, and it sold well throughout Europe. Our economies only started to recover in the late 1950s. Here in the UK sales of real cars started to take off about 1959. Many people who had cars pre-war were still keeping them going until then, and the used car market was suddenly flooded with cheap very well maintained pre-war cars, selling for about £5 (say around $15).
I imagine 2-3 people can just carry it up and out.

A friend's dad had an Isetta and my buddy was allowed to drive it and one day in 2007 I sat in the passenger seat. It was really an experience, it rattled, stank, was loud and very wobbly. Have rarely had so much fun in a car. Fortunately, we do not have mountains and hills in northwest Germany. 🤭Now at 34 years old I would barely make it in or out of there at all. 😂
Sorry but one of your statementsabout them being 4-wheelers is wrong if you're talking about the UK reather than the US. I owned and drove one of these for a year or so in the late 1960s. Mine had one wheel at the back and two at the front, so it was a pretty stable three-wheeler which was counted as a 'motor trycicle' in the UK, which meant that I could drive it on a motorcycle driving licence and pay less road tax, which I did. The ones with two rear wheels never took on in the UK as they were classed as proper cars and needed a proper car licence. Mine was great and went very well (60mph fairly easily and 70 flat out). It's easy to criticise them all these years later but at the time they were useful. Mine never faltered on hills even with 3 teenagers in it going uphill. It was a 300cc BMW motorbike engine which was pretty good.
