what are some of yalls favorite game OSTs pls tell me (especially if they’re adaptive) i need MORE
P.s. the other mariokart games do count i was kidding please don’t publically stone me
I know it sounds generic, but i really like Undertale's OST
Also the only thing that drove me to get a SSS in DMC5 is the battle music
NIER OST is still lit af check it out
Pokemon Red Rescue team (tho it's not adaptive, the OST is amazing)also Pikmin (even though that was mentioned)! I like the little details when they add marimba and such when the pikmin are building bridges.
Devil May Cry 3.
Omg Payday 2 is a fucking GREAT example of this. So you go to rob a place and the music starts off all calm kind of speculative as you case the joint, then when the cops get alerted, as you are preparing for a siege, the music builds up and up, then when the cops arrive, BAM the music is epic.
5:53 You have no idea how hard I was fucking losing it when I realized the man was just eating fucking paper the entire time. I was dying when I found out.

Jet Set Radio has a cool transition for music, it was basically the sound of tuning to a different radio station and it goes to the next song
it had to be said honestly
Future's mixes were even better
Hell yeah it does
JET SET RADIOOOOO
That's a nice way to transition music.
"noooo! you have to use a guitar as the main instrument in heavy metal!"
Mick Gordon: "haha, chainsaw go VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR"
iD told him not to use any guitar in the soundtrack but he still used some lol
Mick actually didn't use a dry chainsaw as a lead. Using an algorithm he actually combined the sound of the chainsaw and a guitar using a technique called convolution.
@@Popbot That's so awesome!
@@Popbot Yeah, he even used a lawn mower in Doom Eternal's Soundtrack.
Jojo pfp? Kinda cringe
Didn't even mention that the Super Mario Odyssey Menu can also play the 1 Up sound effect because that and the Observatory theme begin with the same 3 notes
it's all witchcraft
Metal Gear Rising Revengence is the best example of this. There’s something about hearing this sick ass rock soundtrack and then BOOM the lyrics kick in

Since I can't reply to the pinned comment:
My favorite adaptive soundtrack right now is Celeste. Lots of vertical mixing, in almost every area. One area, whenever you push a new button to remove some of the mess, the music gets more intense; another area, when the wind kicks up the music gets more intense, and reverts as it dies down; another area, you hit switches to transition between heat/lava and cold/ice, which changes the functions of the level elements as well as instantly switching the music. The last area in the story includes a bunch of the other areas' themes, and for each one it has a version of the music track that echoes that area's track but is still THE SAME TRACK. It's good.
I love Celeste's soundtrack
@David You mean Checking In, the slower one with the wandering kinda melody? Yeah, every time you unlock a door the music adds a track. Also, when you get near Oshiro, the bass fades out and you get a theremin countermelody. I think there are like six or seven versions of the track.
I think undertale and deltarune have it. Maybe
@@aaronbalchand5475 Haven't played them but I wouldn't be surprised, Toby Fox is awesome
@Edward Harvey Hell yeah, Celeste fans unite
The koopa busting a move in time with the music in the new super Mario bros clip filled me with indescribable joy
I agree with your opinion, have a good day.
I'm surprised he didn't talk about Breath of the Wild. The whole soundtrack is adaptive based on the time of day and location with instruments fading in and out and extra layers being played.
It got an honourary mention lol
There’s already an incredible video by Scruffy on that, so Noodle probably wanted to look at different titles.
@@SomeFreakingCactus yes!!! Absolutely love that video
The mulduga soundtrack is the best representation of this video’s point. It’s always confused me like how is it so smooth?
He actually mentioned BotW as an example but didn’t go into detail.
He did not however bring up the brilliant work or Keiichi Okabe
I like how he snuck in shadow the hedgehog in the doom sequence.
lol we all saw that 😳
You talked about Pikmin 1, but I’m surprised you did not mention Pikmin 2 as has one of the best examples of adaptive music that I love.
Not only is there a main theme, an nearby enemy version, an attacking enemy version, a treasure moving version, AND a nighttime version for EVERY SONG! When you switch characters(captains) on the fly, the music changes to a swing version for EVERYTHING!. Don’t get me started with the cave themes. They are randomly generated from a preset of instruments and patterns, ALL WHILE having the same seamless variants as before, not to mention the amazing soundtracks for it all.

We have all come back to this video just to hear it, thank me later.

NieR Automata. There are at least 3 different versions of almost every song including 8-bit.

NieR automata's soundtrack is so good
@@Joe0400 “good” is putting it mildly
The nier soundtrack was ASTOUNDING
Fun fact: Halo ending music was adaptive! The further in you get, the more dramatic it got.
Hades has an INCREDIBLE adaptive soundtrack that swept me away when I first tried it and continues to impress me every time I go back. The way the same song switches instruments and ramps up as you progress from room to room, only to turn into an epic metal version of the track at a bossfight, is just perfect!
Or how Orpheus sounds more distant when you are in Zagreus' room.
Hades has some of the best music hands down. One of the few games I always wear headphones for and refuse to listen to anything else while I play it.
@@hedera1332 thats not impressive just a nice detail
That's cause they spent half their budget on an actual orchestra.
I think the honest-to-god pinnacle of dynamic music is de Blob 2. The songs gain new instruments as you paint the level with different colours. Additionally, the songs “build” as you complete the level, starting as droning synths, and ending as full band performances. It’s all so great.
My nostalgia just spiked so hard
I could not agree more with this statement.
Welp, time to go plug in the wii.
I scrolled back so fast to find this comment and like it. Holy Frack-a-lack is de Blob 2 a good example!
One more detail about Mario Kart 8 is when you drive fast the music is also changing a bit, you can here this well when you drive extremely fast in 1st place and then suddenly stop
"They made Imuse."
*Background shows a man eating paper.*
I remember that DMC5 had dynamic music that went crazier and crazier as your style rank went up. I can still remember pulling off a perfect Royal Guard parry as Dante and hearing a RESOUNDING “You cannot kill me! I AM OMEGA!!” and getting a wicked grin on my face.

The whole DMC5 music in general is absolutely amazing
Wait... Vergil...

The best part of the DMC5 soundtrack is that the way it rewards you for doing good and being stylish is with some of the hardest drops you can find in gaming. The main 4 songs are all bona-fide bangers. I especially love how the music at A rank is all buildup, and it drops as soon as you break into S
What about "THE, a Hat in Time"? Every pecking thing in that sick hacking-cute-game is insanely dynamic bruh that I lost my adulthood playing it man!

The fact that Josh Mancell's work on Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy wasn't mentioned is criminal. Sandover Village alone has like at least 9 versions depending where you're at in the map.
Jak 2 also was magnificent with dynamic music. Especially in the opening prison sequence where the guards suddenly start shooting at you through the grated floor

Another old game with adaptive music is Spore
WII PLAY TANKS!!! It's one of the best versions of adaptive music (I found it via Scruffy's video) and it brings me SO much nostalgia oh my god it's so beautiful and I never directly noticed it as a kid, only got the feeling change when you play. It's so good you can listen to the same melody for hours because it's never quite the same
Tetris Effect easily would deserve a video of its own. From the visual effects to the little in-key sound effects that play as you move your tetromino, rotate it, and slam it around, this game is a true work of art. Who would've known you'd cry playing a game of Tetris?
Biggest example I can also find of this is the Amusement Park track in NieR: Automata. when you're at the front gate, it's a small xylophone, but when you're on the roller coaster it's bombastic and all over the place

I also love your promotion (and the transition). Thank you for being transparent about it.
How could you make a video about this without mentioning A Lenda do Herói? It is a video game born with this concept in mind. It is the best example to this day

This one app game I have, Tsuki’s Odyssey, Has each section playing the same melodies, but with different instruments and styles to fit the scenery. A lot of things about that game is super impressive for a small mobile game about walking around talkin to ur neighbors and harvesting your farm.
Its not the most interactive game but DAMN the music lowkey slaps.
No NieR Automata? Every single track has basically 3 different versions that adapts to the situation
THHHHHHHHAT'S what I was gonna say too brah!! XDD
I've watched the video purely because I was like "NieR must be mentioned", and yet...
@@krisztiankiss777

3 different versions is quite an understatement, if you watch the composers story of how the soundtrack was made on youtube he'll explain that every track basically consists of quite a few layers (more than 3), and it's continuously adding and removing layers based on where you are and what's going on. There basically is no final version of any track, and they had to make everything as it might have been ingame based on those layers for the OST CD release.
id for that video: MhTSy9OTWv0
Plus the 8-bit version that kicks in whenever 9S hacks someone. All in seamless transitions!
I like kirby's music, theirs nothing technologically innovative about it, it just sounds nice
Marx's theme though, that shit might not be much technically, but it's definitely more than something on the technical level.
Void termina tho
The final boss in Kirby's adventure sounds like it shouldn't be possible on Nes, there's several layers of instruments playing at once and it's complex for the time.
Also the N64 cutscenes have music that plays in sync with what the characters do, that's kind of cool.
Undertale and its soundtrack will always have a special place in my heart.
Oh no I definately notice crescendo of baby park, it only help build the faustration, panic and chaos of the stage, I legit be screaming to the song

10:20 absolutely blew my mind. Hiding under our noses the whole time, GENIUS
Dude, Portal 2 ending song makes me cry every time. Frickin' nostalgia.
Tetris Effect really stunned me how the blocks add to the music perfectly.
It took me almost my whole life to fully realize how awesome vertical mixing is. The final castle in A Link Between Worlds totally blew me away when I noticed it was becoming more intense and triumphant as I got closer to the final boss. Great stuff!
The audio quality in this video is fantastic
Little Big Planet is another example. In the game when you interact with the PS3/PS4 controller it first plays a simple beat, the more options you pick it will have the same rhythm but with other instruments included. Not just that, in the worlds/ levels, you can see the same exact mechanic from the main menu. The music gets interactive the father you go through the levels. You may also get the soundtracks and use them in your levels and you can tamper with the interactive music and can change the beat however you like it. Also in Little Big Planet 2, you can also make your own music by collecting beats or using present ones.
the next video better start by you dragging the little guy into frame from the left side
10:22 *Why must you play with my emotions?*
Best exemple of this kind of subtle music changes are in Portal which is filled to the brim with them, for exemple in Portal 2 when you use a jump pad the game plays a sound that makes you feel like you travel at insane speeds XD,idk how to explain it but most ppl who played Portal 2 know what sound i talk about, its the most noticeable ande i love this kind of small sound changes that depend on what you do in the game itself, rather you jump or oyu get shot or you drive in either slow manner iwth no dange or fast with a hell of alot of danger around they rlly help the gameplay experience alot
In Portal 2, the game automatically does a remix of the current playing OST piece and a seperate track "Freindly Faith Plates." It also changes in tone depending on the original OST on that area.
There are also similiar systems in L4D2. The AI director creates a unique soundscape for each player depending on their situation and weaves in different phases of the OST and mutated zombie ecounters (Witch, Jokey, Tank, Charger, Hunter, etc.)
An interesting tidbit is that in Game Builder Garage, (a game where you can make your own small games,) the pre-made music tracks have different variants of the track that you can mix and match. And if you swap between two versions of the same song they smoothly transition allowing the designer to make their own vertically mixed soundtrack. He’s right, no one does this like Nintendo.
easiest example I can think of is splatoon where when you are in or out of ink tones it down to a more "watery" version of the song playing
another is (if i remember correctly) Lorule castle which adds a larger chorus and bass as you venture further inside PLUS the theme is a rendition of hyrule castle in reverse and I love it
another great one is tower of spirits from Loz Spirit Tracks as you walk up the tower of spirits and more instruments and vocals are added the higher you climb
also just a cool bit that Princess Hilda's theme is Zelda's Lullaby inverted and that Ballad of the Goddess is Zelda's Lullaby backwards
sunset overdrive.
also there's a shooter i can't remember the name of but everything you did (firing, reloading, taking cover) made a lil thing happen in the music and it was phenomenal
prolly a couple games do that but the one i'm thinking of is very meticulously writhing away from my mind's eye
Planet Coaster has wonderful adaptive music. It's a sandbox game about making an amusement park. The music and sound effects in your park sounds different if you're near a speaker or far away (or in a cave), there is chill background music triggered if there are no diegetic music playing, transitions from and into menus are really subtle, but the most amazing feature? Well you can build your own coaster and add music... and the music adapts to the layout of your ride! The version changes depending if it's a thrilling section or not. Same for sound effects and animations.
I love how Breath Of The Wild uses horizontal transitions with its music the changes from plains theme to the battle theme always takes my breath away
Scruffy has a great video on this called “The invisible sound design in Breath Of The Wild.” It’s a great vid and would recommend a watch
I like how you utilize adaptive music in your video about adaptive music, it's a quite neat implementation of what you're talking about.
Thank you for this video, as a sounddesigner, it's awesome to see how you(and hopefully others) appreciate these things.
And yet it comes so natural to people, that the roles of composers, sounddesigners and musicians get so undervalued and oversaturated, that the pay is sadly often dissapointing.
Support music in videogames!!
In the newer Forza Horizon games, the track you are playing in the menu transitions to freemode, and when you get in a race, as the race starts it goes straight into the beatdrop, it's a thing I'm always trying to replicate when I play other games nowadays
Bruh don't judge but like I was watching asmr spa thing with gibi asmr before this so now I'm so chilled out. when it said "Wear headphones" I was like "Ha I already am" but since I LITTERLY AM SO CHILL the 0:22 Jump scared me.

In Super Mario Odyssey in the RoboBrood fight, the music transitions from phase 1 to vulnerable to phase 2, but it goes unnoticed, possibly because of how smoothly they transition.
I don't think the phase 2 music is actually different, but the vulnerable version is definitely vertically mixed!
Hey! Thanks for making this video! This is my career now and I'm not sure that it would have been if it wasn't for this video!
I adore Fire emblem awakenings music (or fire emblems music in general), but the theme for the final boss, Id (Purpose), is absolutely gorgeous.

one of the best examples of this is the first watch dogs like bro they did it so well

4:50 Dude, thank you for including The Secret of Monkey Island games since those games aren't talked about a lot today. The games go on sale for a really good price regularly and are usually better than most AAA games made today.
Year late to this video and I haven’t even watched it yet, but “music that changed with the game” reminds of Celeste’s summit level, which has music that changes to the music of previous levels whenever climbing up through the area that that music belongs to, while still keeping the Summit music as well. It’s one of my favorites from the game and encompasses many of the previous themes throughout the game. Even though no one will see this, I just thought I’d give my thoughts on it.
I saw it.

One of my favorite transitional pieces is from the Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. When you are on the train there is a different version of intensity depending on your speed full speed being the entire band or orchestra or whatever is making that amazing-sounding music and stoping being a little guitar. It's so good!
Or the less impressive but still genius one lying in the spiral stairway of the tower of the spirits. You start with mere wind, and it gets more instruments the more floors you climb.

I was gonna be a teeny bit pissed if Left 4 Dead wasn't at least mentioned. The random looping of about 30 drum bits mixed with at the lowest 40 and the highest 80 music bits based solely on what map you were playing when a horde was swarming, special infected jingles based on which infected was in the area, getting vomited on, being incaped, etc.
A developer said it best. "We based the music based on what the player is experiencing, not on what we want them to experience."
Glad to see it got noted in the video.
My favourites are how Super Mario World adds a drum beat whenever you ride Yoshi, or again in Yoshi's Island how the level select keeps adding more and more instruments with each new area
Oh that Mario Kart soundtrack is on point. That bass solo in the begining. Makes me wanna learn it. I'm not that good though.
There's Portal 2 in this video. This is now my favorite Noodle video.
Pyre, in my opinion, has the best adaptive soundtrack ever. (I’m going to assume you know what Pyre’s basic gameplay is, so if you’re confused, here’s a link to a video that explains the soundtrack better than I ever could: th-cam.com/video/dYkWpMzKhHM/w-d-xo.html ) Each main character has their own theme. Each triumvirate has their own theme. During a rite, that theme changes depending on if someone has the orb or not, if you’re close to the enemy’s pyre, if they’re close to yours, if all your members are banished, etc. Heck, the theme for the liberation rite has NINE DIFFERENT VARIATIONS that each play off the musical theme of each triumvirate you face, on top of changing the actual lyrics of the song. The end credits song changes depending on who goes free and who remains in the Downside, even specifying if the player character was male, female, or not given. And each and every character in your group has their own instrument that fades in and out of the song currently playing as they come on and off screen, thus each song has dozens of variations. It’s so damn good, and one of the reasons Pyre is my favorite game of all time.
THANK YOU, jeez, I thought nobody was gonna bring it up. The way it transitions is incredible and I'm honestly a little let down he didn't mention it.
Supergiant is the GOAT of music, tbh. It's not fair to bring them up because of how good the music is and how cool their implementation can be. And that's brfore actually playing the game and realizing how dope they are to play.
A game that is cool that uses songs to connect the player and the ambience is the brazilian game SONGS FOR A HERO. It's a game that everything you do in the game, the character sings it, seriously.
They are made by CASTRO BROTHERS and DUMATIVA.
If you see a enemy, the character will sing about the enemy. If you use your sword repeatedly, the character will sing about you use the sword again and again, and so on.
