As I head out excited seeking new adventure in the eerie yet beautiful fog and rain, my night in the woods was cut short by the disturbing sounds of creeping in the woods. I try to justify the sounds being of falling branches and rain until I hear footsteps getting closer to my camp. Then I see it! I wasn’t alone. It was time for me to leave. Always listen to your gut. Listen to your instincts.

I own a large acreage in the US, but like to solo camp on public lands. I go to places most people don't venture. So far, the few humans I've encountered have been friendly and polite. Like you, if I ever get the feeling I'm not safe, I'm leaving. So far, that hasn't happened. Before I camp on public lands, I thoroughly check it out. If something doesn't look right, I go elsewhere. I'm a big, healthy guy and and handle most problems, but when I camp, I just want peace and solitude. I'm not spoiling for a fight. Trust me. I can win a fight, but that's not what I want. Tomorrow night, I'm going hammock camping on my own land just to test out some new gear. Should be easy.

I remember one time i was camping with a group on a mountain near a lake and one of my friends was scared during the night. Because of some noises outside his tent. Turns out it was just sheep that time 😉
But well done for listening to your gut Josh, like you said its better safe than sorry and I'm so glad that you realised that, regardless of what was actually out there😊

Josh, the most dangerous animal you will ever encounter out in the wild is other people. They can be real random. You wouldn't have been able to relax or settle down to sleep if you had stayed. The dogs barking proved something or someone was out there. I wouldn't have stayed either.

The most horrific thing about that vid was you leaving the back side of the ghost sheet all creased up and not neatly over the stump! My OCD had me wanting to peal the skin off my face 😂😂. All jokes aside that was bloody creepy! Them footsteps would of made my ass drop out! All the signs where there to leave definitely did the right thing! I've noticed a few videos from uk now where strange stuff has happened and they have all been camping around lorrel trees. It's probably coincidence, Them long tangled branches definitely give off a horror movie vibe especially with mist and rain.
    Thanks for sharing josh.
all the best stay safe be well. 👍

It used to be customary to announce your presence to a camp before coming in, skulking around the perimeter of a camp was was a big no-go and considered threatening. Definitely right to pack up if intuition is on high alert.

Eerie mist, rain, strange noises, rustling in the bush, twigs cracking, slight barking and howling. Well sir, there is only one thing it could be... and that is.... The Hound of the Baskervilles.
In all serious though, well done for looking after yourself.
I can remember a camp I did a year ago and it didn't feel right. Similar situation to yours, misty, rain, hearing thuds. I stuck it out for a while then around 23:00 it was pitch black and I heard a deep thud behind my tent. I got out of my tent instantly ice cold with fear, switched on my head torch and looked behind my tent and saw a very large silhouette in the clearing with 2 large green eyes. Honestly, I froze solid and stopped breathing for a short spell. I genuinely felt terrified. After a few seconds the silhouette moved slightly and groaned with a large puff of smoke from its mouth. Then when my sense came back to me I realised it was a Cow. The relief I felt was such that I felt 10 stone lighter after the my fear dissipated.
But I couldn't relax then, I kept hearing other thuds and twigs cracking around my camp and the strange fear came back. I packed up and headed straight home.

You do have to listen to your instincts, always. Watching this, mine are saying that being floodlit and talking loudly, before it's dark, in a wood where you have history of being rumbled by gangs of locals could either a) risk attracting more real human/canine attention; or b) make you paranoid you are, even if not.
I hope you find a better spot and/or the mental space to relax. But prioritising the techniques of stealth camping over making a well lit, talky TH-cam vid may give you more of a chance to stick it out. Sorry if that sounds a bit judgemental but it just seems such an obvious solution, to this rather nervous camper anyway...
    Best of luck! 👍

I would have bailed too, for sure, what a spooky atmosphere! People can be super weird around stuff they don't understand (like wild camping), I used attend LARP events in foresty areas, and sometimes random people would just follow us around and watch us. Fair enough that they get curious about someone in chainmail in their local forest, but just ask and then leave me to it...

Man, I’ve been it that situation. Im very hardy nowadays in the woods and sleep like a baby, but once I saw a man on my thermal camera, walking very quietly through the woods about 50 meters away. It was dark and he (or she) wasn’t using a torch. They disappeared after a minute. Why were they there in the dark with no torch? That spooked me and I headed out. Had other experiences also or torches in the night, screams etc…. Yet I keep going out. You now have got to go back there and brave a night. Borrow my thermal camera ! 😂

The creepiest thing is how they were able to keep their dog quiet when crashing around your camp that’s some good training. No point in sticking around when there are plenty enough weirdos who will be more than anti social enough to try and scope out whether they’re able to take you on or not. If there was someone there it sounds like they were doing exactly that and trying to figure out if you were alone or not.
I think it would be hard for them to keep their dog quiet when we can hear it being quite vocal as you were leaving.
Could be a vagrant camping out in the woods trying to figure out if you were a threat to them too.
Did you have a reccy around when you went back to see if there was evidence of another camp recently used?

    • @campingwithjosh

I might have to head in and look especially to see if the camp fire wood has been moved. It could have been two separate people as the dog was heard when I packed up and heard once leaving field. I definitely someone in there as I saw them but I would have heard his dog move about with him. Who knows but defo won't be camping in those woods again. Strange things before have happened to me whilst camping in different areas of those woods.

Defo was strange seeing someone hide behind the bushes when I was there and hearing them. I'm glad I got out this time. Don't ever do that!
All the markers on your story of what happened, while you were there, was indicative of a cryptid.
    Everything went quiet 🤔
Why weren't the birds singing 🤔
So because someone was spying on you, or it was a dog, is not enough to cause everything to go quiet.

Most encounters I have had are domestic dogs especially in Europe where they are more often left to roam.
Worst one was in the Black forest Germany.
I was cocooned in my bivy and it got within 5 meters before I pounced as fast as I could thinking it was a wild boar, still in a tangle with a knife in one hand and a torch in the other... This dog was huge... I blinded it with the torch, it took off down the slope banging into trees as it went.
I felt bad in hindsight, it cant have been being territorial or it would not have backed off, it probably wanted to say hello and I could have done with the company... It still took me a while to settle after that :)
Saw a camper van further down through the forest the morning after, must have been their dog.
Poachers and gamekeepers are the only humans that I imagine would be stealthing around in the dark... They will be afraid of you too so will be reluctant to announce themselves.
Only had one human creeping around, I was next to water so was probably in his favorite stealthy fishing spot.

I love camping never done it alone, but you’d never catch me wild camping by myself unless it was truly out of the way and there were 0 signs of humans being there recently. I wouldn’t even feel comfortable starting a fire or turning on a torch, it makes you too visible. The best camping spot I’ve ever found was in wales, we climbed up the side of a hill that was covered in brambles but in the brambles were hidden tree stumps that made it like a ladder no one would’ve been able to get to us without us knowing.

I enjoyed solo primitive camping in the State Forest of Pennsylvania every other week, all year 2021-2023. I intended to hot tent camp last winter and continue thru 2024, but then suddenly God told me to stop. Then I learned about increasing encounters with cryptids (I never knew about) around the US, with clear videos to back up their stories. And the 'new people' are living in forests too, so I decided it was time to stop camping. Then, two weeks ago I was walking my dog on a trail in the State Park that surrounds my mountain top home. It was late morning when we were attacked by a raccoon with rabies. If I had not taken my walking stick, it would have been terrible for both of us. When the raccoon first made its presence known, Carmella was loose and ran the raccoon up a tree. I called her to me and put her on leash, continuing up the trail. I thought nothing of it at first. Then the raccoon followed us up the trail, chattering up a storm, trying to get my dog to chase it again. We stopped and it kept coming at us. When the raccoon got close and tried to bite my dog I hit it with my walking stick and it moved away briefly. We continued at a quick pace down the trail and the raccoon kept coming. I dropped my pack off trail, we circled back around as the raccoon followed us through the bushes, chattering constantly. We got back on trail and ran home up hill all the way; 1 mile. I am 60 years old with bad hips, but that didn't matter in the moment. I went back for my pack 4 days later. This experience has taken me out of my comfort zone, permanently. I now understand what it means to have a much higher level of being present, alert and situational awareness. Now, I carry a walking stick/spear with a sheath covered by a Raccoon puppet so it doesn't look like a self defense tool to passers by. For me, it is a reminder to stay mentally prepared and aware at all times. Since the raccoon encounter, I have had dreams of being stalked and attacked by various forest critters with rabies. Being hunted is a terrifying feeling, but I am using this experience to better prepare me for how this world has changed. Peace has been taken from the earth. Revelation 6:4

Hi, I think you did the right thing leaving in both situations. Whats on your side is your stature, the fact you are a man, your axe and camp knife.. however there is always someone who could potentially overpower you. And this world has got many ill intentioned individuals and or mentally twisted ones. You never know. and no one im guessing wants to have a physical confrontation middle of the woods at night. I left my camp once, at 3am, because i heard footsteps in the surrounding woods. I know the sounds of all woodland animals so yeah it could have been a stag as they are heavy but.. having no network would not been able to call for help. so i left my tent and sleep item, drove 1hr back home and came back the next day. I had camped in those wood before and even stayed a week previously. I always listen to my gut feelings. Also a sleepless night would have prevented me enjoying the next day, that and all the adrenaline from preparing to be attacked. It just isnt worth it! I actually feel safer byvying because its so discreet and im hidden in bushes. i slept under a rock few nights and felt very safe. Also.. I try not to use my torch when going through woods as i dont want to be easily spotted or followed to my chosen camp,( i trained to put up a tent in the dark by doing it blindfolded during the day.) this way i keep my night vision and my other senses become more acute.I also have a medium flask filled with hot water or tea in case someone attacks me in the tent, ill scold their face with this and make my escape, also i can use this metal flask to hit but that would be clumsy. I acquired an inconspicuous hiking tent, colour of the woods, and with two sides entry. I can come out both sides and have vision of my surroundings too.
