I for the life of me can’t understand people not liking Spencer’s vocals. He is the difference maker in this band, do we really need yet another technically impressive band with the same vocals as everyone else? There are very few if any other vocalists that can do what he can. They are a progressive metal band that from day one never worried about fitting in a simple box. Don’t be so afraid to open your horizons a bit!

It took me a solid year to start liking his vocals. I think they might just be a little too theatrical for some people. He tends to over-emphasize his vocals, which is an acquired taste I think.

i struggle to find vocalists as capable of making melodic phrases sound as good as spencer. recently been liking lukas magyar from veil of maya and jesse cash's cleans from erra but thats about it. also spencers multitracks are fuckin nuts like the one at 12.05 in this song and on the chorus of absolomb to name a few

My biggest problem with Spencer is his inability to follow through with his studio preformence live. Only other thing is some of the melodies he comes up w I just can't get behind.

There are so many intricacies and nuances that are 100% overlooked unless you’ve listened to them a while. They use motifs out the wazoo, often put electronic interludes after songs, and create lyrical themes. It’s so much to digest that Periphery is hands down the hardest band to get into...
But once you do, it’s a blissful world of unique, creative chaos. These guys truly are some of the greatest musicians and artists of our time and their talent is greatly ignored due to the unique and unorthodox style of their music.

The song is a masterpiece. It took me awhile to get into Spencer’s vocals as well but his stuff fits with the music. He’s supremely talented with range and I love his vocals now! He’s also one of the nicest dudes ever! This song does have lots of structure but it’s built around themes and flushing the variations out. The song is quite obviously telling a story with all the lyrics and time. The layering with multiple guitar tracks and symphony is incredible!

  • @AndreasKingMedia

I started with Periphery the same way - I hated Spencer's vocals at first. Sometime around P3 coming out the whole thing just flipped in my head and he's one of my favorite parts of the band.
I can even go back to the older albums now and love them. You might find their heavier songs to be a better entry way into their music - like "The Bad Thing", "Blood Eagle", "CHVRCH BVRNER" and "Make Total Destroy".

I used to follow Misha over on Soundclick and the Line6 forums before Periphery was even a thing. If I remember correctly, it took him around 3 years to find the musicians that could pull off the stuff he was wanting to do at the time. There were different vocalists, a bassist, and another drummer, Travis Orbin. Misha's soundcloud had so much free interesting music. Anyway, I believe that Misha credits Meshugga with creating the Djent sound. Misha wont take credit for it but he is largely responsible for it's rise in popularity. Therefore he is often referred to as the grandfather of Djent. At least that is my perspective. Others may know far more than me.

Glad you guys reacted to the song and I respect your opinions! I’m a huge Periphery fan boy haha so I adore this song. Misha actually said the song was around 8 minutes when they wrote it, but he felt the song had more to say so the song turned out to be 16 minutes long lol. It’s funny cause he also said he generally doesn’t like writing long songs. The breakdown heard around 10 minutes is also from a song he wrote over 10 years ago which is really cool. Looking forward to the Blood Eagle reaction!

I’d be curious what you would think of their song The Bad Thing. They have a music video for it to with studio audio but shot at a show which adds to getting into it. I think if your into metal but haven’t found a lot of songs to get into, that in my opinion is the best one. Great guitar riffs, heavy, great solo, cool breakdowns, and it’s one of my favorite choruses from Spencer. If you haven’t heard it yet I’d be curious to see your reaction.

The thing about this song on its own is it is used to set up a lot of themes on the record. both lyrically and musically. Also to answer your question i don't think Perirphery was the first Djent band. pretty sure that would be meshuggah even if they dont call themselves that. But Mark from periphery did coin the term if i understand correctly.

It's actually the first time i listen to Periphery. I have to say that in no way i find that the singer is the "first obstacle" to appreciate this song. I don't know why many people seems to find it is; strange. What i thought initially instead is that to attempt and really succeed in making a 18 minutes song the level of variation have to be more spread out and not making it on 5 minutes sections. Because this way you're gonna make the listener crave for the "next part" way too soon. In this regard i think that the second half of the song is way juicier than the first because it was a more fluid musical journey to me. All things considered I liked the song.
