I feel like Adam is just looking for a reason to hate on Periphery because they are popular. Just my opinion. For me, Periphery II is the album that I got into them on. Maybe try that album if you really want to get into them.
Nah, I totally get it. I love them to death, but I definitely had trouble with them at first. Spencer's vocals are definitely not like anyone else's, which can be a blessing and a curse. EDIT: Also as a sidenote, check out their alpha/omega album if you find them a little excessive - they deliberately toned the complexity of most of that album down and it sounds like that's exactly what you want.

A vast majority of this album was just them having fun with songs lyrically. The album was literally titled “HAIL STAN” as a jab at people thinking all metal is worshipping Satan. It only makes sense that songs like “Blood Eagle”, “Reptile” and “CHVRCH BVRNER” are stupid heavy, technical and edgy/a little cringe lyric wise. I could see how upon first listen you could think they’re “trying too hard” when they’re literally just having fun and bullshitting lol

And lets address the issue he had with their facial expressions in a music video...by which he came to the conclusion that they're full of themselves?!😳 That was the last straw. I (Adam) have met Mark personally, great player and great dude. Chester and Spenser sound nothing alike. I didn’t like the solo not enough structure for me, it was fine for what it was. This song is MEH. It’s only smiles is the only song I like of that album. 🤷♂️ Amazing musicians, just don’t like the music. It’s ok Periphery will survive.

However if you like that track P3 might be more up your alley with tracks like Flatline. and as for the Spencer and Chester comparison, to say they are NOTHING alike is a stretch, although I think he has some of the same qualities and not all. Nothing alike would be more like Peter Steele or mikael åkerfeldt compared to Spencer. Spencer sounds pretty close to chester on a track called Astral from his solo project Endur, there is also a cover of Shadow of the day which sounds like a lighter version of Chester.

Periphery has always been a band I love, it just hits the right notes for me, but more often than not when I show them to someone else (especially their first album) they can be a hard sell to most at least from my experience. So even though I love them, I don't get butt hurt when someone else doesn't cause they are definitely not everyone's cup of tea. So no hate from me Adam. Your opinion is valid and I'm glad that you can at least acknowledge their musical prowess and not just say they're trash because you're not into it. I just don't think you like progressive metal. It's not for everyone. I recommend their older stuff or non-single tracks. I never really was a big fan of their singles. They just don't display the albums best work.
