    Love me a bit of Periphery, mega live band as well. I vote for Reptile next as well, epic track and they opened the show with it last time a I saw them. If you want a bit of guitar nerdness, the guitarist Misha published about 15 albums worth of riffs under the name Bulb, worth searching out.

    I’m sure someone else has said this here but they are a 3 guitar band and the bass player, while not really part of the band in terms of touring and stuff, he does track bass tracks for every song. Dude’s name is Nolly Getgood and he’s insane. Oh, and if you wanna hear more of him check out the songs Absolomb, Graveless, or Prayer Position in Periphery’s lineup. He’s super easy to hear in those tracks 😊👍

    Hmm, what should I say...this is the band that helped me learn that I love metal, so they'll always be special to me.
    This is probably their most straight up heavy, brutal, nasty song. I've heard it enough times that I kind of forgot about the changes, though, and that's what you'll get in a lot of Periphery songs. Kind of a mix of everything, technical prog stuff, beautiful melodic stuff, and just sick riffs that make you headbang. I could recommend so many songs, it's hard to say where you should go next. I think you'll get a lot of mentions of songs like Reptile and Satellites, but those are some of their best songs from their newest album and I think you should hold off. I've seen other people jump right into those when they weren't ready and they weren't able to fully appreciate it.
    You could do any of the other three from your poll. I personally voted for Scarlet, it's a pretty fun one from their second album. The music video might be very distracting though...Icarus Lives is an interesting one because it's from their first album, which I admit I still haven't listened to fully. They didn't really have their sound locked down and the lead singer, Spencer, hadn't totally figured out his style. That said, Icarus Lives is still one of the better songs from that album and it might be cool to see how they sounded early on and then go to something newer. I dunno man, there's really a lot to choose from.

    Periphery and Spencer Sotelo (vocalist) are incredible musicians and songwriters in this genre. Spencer's range is absolutely phenomenal. You HAVE to check out more of their stuff. It's a bit of a long one, but I would HIGHLY suggest checking out Reptile from the same album, Hail Stan. If you really want to hear the best display of their style and just how nuts Spencer's vocal range can be, that song is an absolute masterpiece.

    You asked if there was a bassist in Periphery. The answer is, kinda. Nolly Getgood used to be the full time bassist for periphery, but he took a step back for another passion of his. Now he acts as a producer/engineer for the band while recording the bass parts in the studio for them. He also helps with the drums. Really weird dynamic, but it works

    3 guitarists and all 3 could lead any one band. The bassist, Nolly, chose to leave full time service in periphery but still tracks for the records and they use his track during live performances. I've been listening to Periphery since their first record and they are hands down in my top 5 of all time. If you get the chance, watch any of the playthrough videos they have done. Any of them are worth it. I have contended that what makes Periphery so special is that you could isolate any one of the members contribution to a song and be content with that isolated individual music.

    Check out Bleed or Clockworks by Meshuggah for some nice math metal style stuff. In college for building guitars we messed around with pendulum rhythms which was really fun. The lead guitarist is only noticeable when he does the solo and that's a really sad under appreciation of his incredible guitar playing. The singer also barely shows any of his incredible ability to weave clean singing vocals with interesting harmony choices into the overall mix wile also adding purposeful screams for emphasis. I would definitely recommend any song off their first album because even though they've progressively gotten heavier almost every album since, the first album truly showcases each members' talent and the unique style that has developed from it. That band name has always seemed interesting to me because it ties in to a lyric from Counting Crows. I mean is it a coincidence? It doesn't seem like a conscious decision.
      I took the cannonball down to the ocean,
      Across the desert from sea to shining sea,

      Fifty million feet of earth between the buried and me

    This might be heresy but the atonal and really odd time changes in death metal remind me of rap. Full disclosure - which I don't care for.
    Growlers typically only have three 'notes' - the normal one they typically sing in, a scream an a deeper swallowed tone so there aren't any vocal notes to blend in with the background music. It is all about the rhythm of the words and how it matches with the beat. This also allows for some crazy chord changes and progression.

  • @HugoStiglitz88

    I don't think they get nearly enough hype but the fans like me can definitely be rabid
    I think the problem is some of their hits are actually some of their most mediocre songs and blood eagle is a perfect example
    Reptile is hyped and it's deserving of it because its IMO in their top 4 songs, and an absolute masterpiece
    The only shorter "hits" that are worthy of the hype is Alpha and Scarlett.

    The whole band will tell you the best guitar player in their band is Nolly and he doesn't even play guitar, he plays bass for them, but only in the studio nowadays. He's too busy running GetGood Drums and producing stuff. Whenever they play live, they'll just pipe in his bass backing tracks through the PA. The rhythm part after the solo reminded me of a side project band called Conquering Dystopia, it's Jeff Loomis on lead and Keith Merrow on rhythm. th-cam.com/video/ATMNVWq21A4/w-d-xo.html

    They are worth the hype, imo. I must be the only person in the world though that doesn't like this particular album. There's just something about it that doesn't resonate with me. The best way I can put it is they found their sound. They were in the zone. But then they overreached and this is the result. It just feels forced compared to their previous efforts.

    • @Yes-ht4mn
      @Yes-ht4mn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really ? I actually think it's the complete opposite (reffering to the feeling forced part). This was their first album under their own label, so they had complete freedom. The whole album felt like something they personally are happy with. I do agree that they are worth the hype though.

    • @PrymalChaos
      @PrymalChaos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is there much need for one in Djent style bands these days? People rocking 8 strings, and classic rhythm guitar is basically non-existent anyway. I’m not sure how much a bass player would find to contribute.
      At this time I will also say that I 100% appreciate bass players and in most cases feel like they may be one of the more important instruments in rock. But in this particular niche may not be necessary.
      In fact what may be a cool idea is for an awesome bass player to learn to play an 8 string guitar and apply bass knowledge and style to a band like this.
