      @@initial_C When I was reading your comment I instantly thought of SNESdrunk and saw you mentioned him, and LGR is great of course. The whole "angry" schtick has run it's course, I feel, with so many reviewers faking it or playing it up or just fake reviews without even playing the game (AVGN is guilty of all of this). It's nice to just have a simple review of a game from someone that has played it.
      If you like SNESdrunk check out his friend NESFriend though he keeps his videos about NES games.

    • @franciscoluisparedesparejo5719
      @franciscoluisparedesparejo5719 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think that games like God of war, ninja gaiden or devil may cry could be more like the Evolution of the genre rather than Shenmue or Yakuza. Shenmue and Yakuza has indeed action and fights against several enemies but that's not the core mechanics of the game, but psx God of war or the Xbox Ninja Gaiden has this kind of fights as it's main game system.

    When I first played this game years ago the graphics and the way the characters are animated actually reminded me of games made on certain arcade boards like what Taito used instead of snes and genesis. guess that silliness the game has along with being a brawler since I was looking for more to play on Saturn is why I didn't mind playing it even though it's not using the consoles power to its advantage.
    At the same time I remember thinking back in the Saturn era "where are the graphically enhanced versions of Streets of Rage 1-3 along with where is SoR 4?" I really would have been playing Saturn even more than what I was already doing if I could have played a better looking, sounding and animated, sounding version of SoR2 since that game is what kept me and my friend up so many nights since the game was just that good.
    Still hurt the Saturn didn't get ports of Sega's own arcade brawlers like both Golden Axe games, Alien Storm and Arabian Fight and Capcom also left a number of their brawlers off the system. Sailor Moon also didn't make it to Saturn and we got that garbage fighting game for her instead which was a stain on Saturn and PS1. >_>

    I personally love beat-em-ups since I grew up with them, so this is awesome to hear one that I never even knew about! It is a shame they fell out of favor after a few years, but I feel like they made a bit of a return recently.

    Really love 2d games. Especially if they are flashy like cps2 types....
    This though looks like something a megadrive or other 16bit machine could do most of...bar that whale or helicopter etc and a few scrolling effects.. (or at least a cut down port on a special cartridge or something)
    It looks very repetitive too. So on this one... I gotta say- on first impressions it doesn't really make me wanna spend time on it. Looks original too which is unique on this genre.
    Edit. Would be more suited on a neogeo as opposed to megasnes!

      Based on Tecnosoft's pedigree and the newfound potential of the Playstation/Saturn the end result is less than hoped for; also though Tecnosoft had some of their top talent already move on from the company and they were a development group past their peak.

    I tried it out after watching your vid and you’re spot on about it being a “Super Nintendo” game. Not only does it have the look, but slow gameplay too. The biggest surprise to me was the sound. It has the muffled soundfx and snes music so common to that systems games. It’s crazy especially this being a CD game.

    Sprites, while big, are an entire generation behind 5th gen SNK, and two generations behind 5th gen Capcom.
    Guardian Heroes, D&D Shadow over Mystara, 3 Dirty Dwarves, & Rampage World Tour are the beat em up gold on Saturn.
    It’s a real shame Capcom didn’t re-use their existing sprite catalog for a ton of Marvel & $treet Fighter beat em ups with branching paths and hella enemy & weapon & super move variety

    • @AyeYoYoYooo
      @AyeYoYoYooo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@apollosungod2819 exactly. It was a previous gen title, ported right away to a system capable of much more. It’s still a fun little game, just has lackluster sprite work compared to all the elite sprite work on the Saturn in years after launch.
      If only I could somehow rewind time and convince Capcom to use these street fighter alpha series, versus series, and Street Fighter 3 series sprites in branched path beat em ups with stages that went both right and left, even some sprite scaling helicopter escape levels or racing escape levels to mix gameplay up a bit.
      94-00 Capcom spritework >>>>>> anything else close

    6:25 brilliant ost! The very first psx game to be released on Japan (Dec 4, 1994), along a few others (like Ridge Racer) and a very early Sega Saturn game (July 1995). Nekketsu Oyako was a great yet obscure 2.5D beat em up, with a fantastic level design and soundtrack. The Sega Saturn was such an amazing console, it was much superior to the N64 and even superior to psx in a few aspects, for example, FPS tend to be better on Saturn than on psx or n64. Considering it was not succesfull in the west, the Saturn sold much better than the N64 in Japan.
    * note: Saturn came out 2 weeks earlier than the psx (in Japan)

    One thing I liked about the ps1 version over the Saturn is that you can get more energy on top of you default energy bar. Other than that, the Saturn port to me is better but nevertheless they’re both really good games and pretty damn expensive

    I feel like the beat'em up genre was on the decline ever since Streetfighter II. With arcade machines, pvp fighting games ate up quarters a heck of a lot faster than coop games. Even if the cabinet technically only supported two players, you'd typically have a much larger number of players waiting their turn, so a lot more quarters to eat up before the players had had enough.
    Coop games could ramp up the difficulty, but it felt a lot more frustrating to only get a minute or two of gameplay because the CPU opponents were unfairly tough, than it was to lose to a human opponent who didn't have an unfair advantage.
    Somehow the shooter genre managed to cling on through this era, but I feel like the beat'em up was too similar to the PvP fighting game. If you had the artists and coders suitable for making a beat'em up, you'd direct them to try and make a more profitable fighting game instead.
    On the console side of things, I think Mario 64 really became what everyone chased after. It's really what drove the feeling that everything now had to be 3D. But developers were struggling with camera control. Having more than one player would make it even more of a headache. So coop was more of a headache to try and develop, so ... sigh...

      Sometime a year or two after Final Fight the arcade beat 'em ups became like "How much mayhem can we cram onto the screen at once?" and the genre kind of burned itself out with over-saturation and excessive repetition. That in combination with the rise of the prioritized one on one fighting game pretty much shifted developers away from the genre for the most part. The one on one fighting game had skill development and progression involved and that was a big advantage, even if that genre became over-saturated over time also.

    Deep dive for this one. I found Hot Blooded Fighting Family to be inoffensive. Certainly not the pinnacle of the genre, but pleasant enough to play, and a bit more outrageous than the 16-bit beat 'em ups it resembles. I liked that the items you could pick up included Sega Saturns.

    I bought the Saturn version last year. Not only does it have much better soundtrack than the PSX version. It’s also one of the best soundtrack of the 32 bit era IMO. It’s a fun beat em up. A bit easy but the comical aspects really makes it worth it

    Love Tecnosoft; this one looks like a run of the mill variety Neo-Geo game; based on the pros and cons I'd choose the Saturn version due to the enhanced OST. I can understand why the game remained in Japan; it would not have moved the needle at all in the USA during the mid-nineties and would have found itself in the bargain bin section before very long. Sony was discouraging 2D games to even be released in the USA for the Playstation for the first year, although they still filtered through and made it out.

      @Orzuum well there is mutation nation.... there's that really crap one (no not victory Joe or whatever its called)- karate blazers or something.
      I was more referring to the graphical style. I mean it hardly pushed the Saturn even the ps!! But it was just that bit too much fir the megasnes! So ...neogeo maybe? Capiche?!

      @Orzuum I wasn't trying to slight the Neo-Geo overall by my original comment; the SengoKu games were quality beat 'em ups however there were also some lazy efforts like Mutation Nation, Robo Army, Ninja Combat, and Burning Fight.

    Always wondered what this game was, saw it in TH-cam clips but nobody ever said the name. It is beyond me why this genre has essentially died, def my fav outside of a good jrpg. Hopefully more fans step up and make games like last couple years to keep it going.

  • @chaospoet
    @chaospoet 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I, too, was sad to see the Beat Em Up genre more or less die off around this time. I got into it with Double Dragon both the NES and Master System versions. Loved Final Fight to death in the arcade and Streets of Rage 1 and 2 on Genesis. I was unaware of this or even Guardian Heroes at the time so for me it was like the genre ended with the SNES/Genesis.

      street of rage 1 is not very good . maybe beacuase of the sprites and character sprites lack of animation not much to look at. to be honest ll take streets of rage 3 instead over 1. but ofcourse street of rage 2 is still king overall

    Nice video and a pretty fair review. There is a little something lacking from this game which I just can't put my finger on. It has combos and varied characters, but it just lacks something that should make it great. I don't think it was due to the timing either. I appreciate a good BMUP even now, Nekketsu is just a run-of-the-mill BMUP. Not bad, but not good either
