- Metal Injection presents Louder Education, a new collaborative show starring Testament shredder Alex Skolnick,Sound Of Urchin's Chris "Tomato" Harfenist, and the students of T.H.O.R. (Tomato's House of Rock). Each week on the series, a new special guest is invited to Tomato's House of Rock, to discuss their journey in the music business, provide educational tips for the growing artists, and round off the show with a kick-ass jam with the kids.
On the season finale of Peavey presents Louder Education, GWAR front-thing Oderus Urungus came into the THOR jam space to talk about celebrity culture, the history of GWAR, their influences, how the band formed, their early days, how the band rose to prominence, his favorite GWAR song, and he sets the record straight about his feelings on Megadeth's Dave Mustaine. At the end of it all, not only does Oderus jam with the kids on the GWAR crusher "Let Us Slay," but Alex Sklonick joins him and the kids for an encore jam of the Testament jam, "The Preacher." I just love how during interview and guest appearances, Brockie would start off speaking in some kind of mock European/British accent, and then as he gets more comfortable, reverts back to his Canadian/American accent-less speak. I also dig when Brockie would talk as himself, but wearing the Oderus Urungus getup, like in this interview.

I love that too. The character is part of him and he's part of the character, I loved seeing his true personality and intelligence come out through Oderus. If he hadn't been a rock star he would have definitely been an activist; most likely serving on the Rainbow Warrior (or one of Greenpeace's other ships). In fact he said so himself in a different interview. He still did end up spending some of his time fighting for our first amendment rights - like the time he got harassed by police at Universal Studios because of his costume. They told him to remove the Cuttlefish of Cthulhu; he said "no"; they arrested him; he took them to court and won.

I know me too. Kind of weird how he was saying he thought celebrities and musicians dying from overdoses was disgusting. I don't think anyone would ever think he was doing heroin.

and this why it's so sad he's gone, because he was one of the good ones. You can feel he did not want to hurt Mustain, and even if he had to get out of character to do it, he did so you could tell he's being honest.
That was the baddest jam session I think I ever witnessed,,,moment to put down in writing ,the kids really jammed too,oder us the one and only.. I'm speechless...

I got so depressed when I found out he was gone. But then I found out that the place where I work owns the original Cuttlefish of Cthulhu and apparently has it on display because he donated it. Next time I go to work I'm going to see if I can find it. It's still strange to think that ALL THIS TIME a part of Oderus has been sitting right there, where I work (Universal Studios) and I didn't know this until recently. Apparently he got arrested after the ceremony but I think he took them to court and won (because they violated his first and fourth amendment rights). Dave will be missed but I will always keep following the band, in fact I'm going to see them on October 24th and I'm going to get as fucked up as I can (without killing myself) in honor of Dave Brockie. Some day I plan to visit the GWARbar in Virginia and I've even heard there's a statue of Oderus Urungus somewhere in Virginia.

@@andrewc.1102 It *was* on display, until USH staff actually found out what it was. From what I've read it got moved around so many times since then that nobody knows where it is anymore. Even Dave Brockie once said that he had no clue where it was. I did go into the hard Rock Cafe to see if I could find it after I wrote this and that's when I found out it's not there; nobody knows where it is - and the Hard Rock Cafe at USH no longer exists (it did when I wrote this). I watched them tear it all down which honestly - I didn't give two shits about the Hard Rock Cafe itself but was sad when they took down the huge replica of Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstrat guitar.
@@mercenairy1 Wish I had a better story to tell but I never saw it. It got removed after Dave Brockie was arrested at Citywalk (before my time). I talked to every Sheriff at Universal Studios and none of them remember the incident but they're all a bunch of dumbasses anyway.
Didn't end up going to see them in October like I had planned either because I had to work but maybe some day. It will never be the same without Oderus and Slymenstra but I will continue to support the band for as long as they keep putting people in those costumes. Like Dave said - Gwar is a band that could be around 100 years from now because they'll just keep putting different people into the costumes.
I really wish we *could* resurrect Dave/Oderus. He was one of a kind. Nobody can ever replace him. And no "tribute band" could ever pull it off. Even if someone *could* do a perfect impersonation of Dave/Oderus I don't think it should be done; the character should be retired out of respect for Dave. In fact I think that *I* can do a perfect impersonation of Oderus but I wouldn't dare try to replace him even if I could. It would be the greatest Halloween costume ever; one I would wear with reverence and awe but that's about all it would ever amount to.
I'm 13 and just started being a fan of Gwar, I'm so sad I missed those old concerts they look like fun.

11:36 hearing Dave give props to Hunter Jackson, despite the years of very bad blood between them, warms the heart. I know Hunter never really forgave Dave, but no one can deny that Gwar came from the creativity of BOTH these awesome men, along with Don Drakulich, Chuck Varga, and many others.

That would be fucking awesome! When I visit Virginia in a few years GWAR will be the only reason. I want to visit the GWARbar, drink some GWARbeer and see if I can find the statue of Oderus Urungus. I'm proud to say that we have the original Cuttlefish of Cthulhu where I work (it's on display). I just wish I could have been there on the day he showed up to donate it. We also have Dimebag Darrel's lightening guitar on display. That fucked me up when I found out because I was there with my wife; didn't realize that guitar was there until we sat down at our table and I saw it directly behind her. We had to move to a different table because I was about to start crying. Dime had just died a few months earlier.
Nobody can replace Dave. It's not the same.

I saw a gwar show where he said " we're doing pretty good these days, did you guy's see that badass new tour bus around back ? We got it from blind melon!" And then when I heard that Dave died ,the irony of making a joke about having bought the tour bus that blind melon's singer died in from a heroin overdose was incredible.
I think he knew it was coming before he knew it was coming if that makes sense.

I took my dad in his 70s to his 1st GWAR show this year. It was glorious.
While these kids are lucky and fortunate to play with these guys, I can't help but think of the kids like these that went to my school. They had $2,000 dollar guitars and amps, got lessons from the "best" teachers and they could play any riff by Metalica or DRI or Slayer etc. but they never made anything that was original. They just sounded so derivative. Most the people that went on to be "lifers" were the kids with shitty guitars and a style of their own. Just my 2 cents on the interwebs...
I've always gotten $50 guitars & amps, & I can't play covers very well, but I can write my own songs! I'm surprised at how good some people can play, yet they can't improvise or just jam out, they needed the music right in front of them. At least they can read music! I never could read music, but I kind of understand tabs!

Like an actual real fucking church with tax exempt status who's only purpose would be to support the current incarnation of the band and donate some of the proceeds to a few of Dave's favorite charities (he did donate to charities).
