This was..a pleasant thing to run into. This game has been one of my PS1 passion projects alongside Grandia, and it's one that I have 100%'ed a few times and come back to every 5 years or so. I still remember the Counter, Multi and Search Crests, elemental Power accessories, Epic Items and all that, the trippy music in the elemental dungeons and the BLK Agumons and Numemons in the Circuit Board. Huge props for still running this awesome game, it's a pleasure to get to see the speedrunner strategies in this game in action.
I'm glad you enjoyed the run :D It's a community effort from all kinds of sides with people routing and running, figuring stuff out etc. Competition specifically is what helped me bring the record down to what it is today as without Hdot and Mentro going for Guilmon Records I would've probably not gotten this run with Kotemon in the first place :D
Incredible. I remember 8 or 9 years ago sitting in a small digimon streamer's chat, and helping them route the game for the first time by backseating them through an early counter crest/zweihander (for Agumon lol) because there were no known times for it because it was considered an unrunnable mess, and we couldn't find any instances of the game being run with a timer in a single sitting. Another person from that chat took what we were working on, made it significantly more efficient, and put together the first full run. The first runs of this game were something like 10-12 hours long, and the galacticmon fight was about a 10% chance of success because it works so differently from the rest of the game and block counters would easily end a 10+ hour run on a single bad turn. Safe-ish set ups weren't a thing yet, and people often threw away 10 hours on a run only to be doomed by final boss RNG. The community constantly debated over the best digimon to run the game with; glitches and new strats were discovered. Slowly the community got the time down to 8.5 hours and we didn't think it could get much better, and I stopped watching for a long while. I check every once in a while to see where the speedrun ended up and if people are still running it. I saw a run in the 7's a few years ago and was shocked it'd come so far. To beat the game in under 6 and a half hours is so ridiculously impressive to see. Congrats on your accomplishment. It was truly a joy to watch, especially as someone who watched the marathon 12 hour streams of early runs.

I myself didn't join in until ~3.5 years ago where the run was still sitting at 7ish hour times and it truly is amazing to see it becoming as fast as it is today. Definitely a community effort both in routing as well as in competition. If not for Mentro and Hdot trying their hardest with Guilmon I don't know if I would've gotten a run like this with Kotemon.
Childhood game played professionally by a pro runner. The run was breathtaking and it was such a rollercoaster ride! Got heart attack too when the lag was suddenly happening. Congrats for the WR! I guess sacrificing your sleep for this run was worth it after all.
I remember I started with Kotemon as a kid spamming blade twister to wreck everything in the game haha! Awesome to see it's actually used in a speedrun.
In 5:30:10 when I have conquered the boss for some reason I can't continue the game, I have also tried to load the game but it always happens after I defeat the boss, is there a solution? i dont how to fix this
Good clean run, I remember being in my 40s and struggling on Galacticmon. Meanwhile you casually took him out with a 30 something ultimate form. Crazy strats.
I saved 95 tp for gold ID getting speed up to 800+ which helped trivialize the game :p I fought galacticmon with newly acquired level 40 megas with some nice tech and was sad I beat em so easily without counter crest

I remember playing this game as a kid and somehow beating it using only guilmon. I picked it back up again recently and wondered how fast a speed run would be. You sir did not disappoint. This has been amazing from start to finish. I'm definitely going to subscribe and keep watching more from here on out.
Many things could be the cause for that, but you probably didn't go to the Mirage Tower yet or you're supposed to go to the Admin Center in Asuka Server right now

I love this game and I've never even gotten far in it only to the swamp area then died right away without saving. Now I'm going to sit here and watch you beat it so that I'm pumped to do it Myself.
I grew up with this game, played the hell out of the first three Digimon World games. This speedrun is very good. Of course 3 is so grindy that even a speedrun is 6 hours long. I recently got into 2003 because it has all the extra content post game after Galactimon, so I wonder just how long a "speed-run" for that would have to be.

@@ekoyudi7171 I don't know what the order is you can do things in to be honest, but in the speedrun we go to the Mirage Tower before going to Magasta. You can probably do it the other way around as well, but you might have to go back to Asuka City first and report to the Admin Center.
If you attack Galacticmon 3 times he lowers his head and takes double damage TNT Ball, which we have from the quest for the Digi-Egg of Sincerity, is a guaranteed hit. We use it as the 3rd hit to skip his attack and deal crazy damage

And Counter crest only works occasionally & the damages Based on Digimon strengths not based on enemy damage ... Bfore , I never Knew there has 2 different digimon 3 game . (3) and (2003). @@riztaurolatino4475 While playing this game I realized that there were some equipments that prevented Counter Crest from triggering, like the Raven Bow, the Rock Breaker and one of the Spears Renamon can use. Wearing some of these equipment will override Counter Crest and won't work at all.

I never made one, but I can whip one out real quick: S: Kotemon A: Guilmon, Monmon, Kumamon B: C: Renamon, Patamon, Agumon This is for the speedrun itself, but in general I'd structure it similarly. Renamon could be B, but I haven't gotten a good run for it yet
Magic techs aren't reliable in this game; noticed all tier C starters are primarily magic users in their main evolutions. Renamon could be a tier B starter as her techs are effective against water, machine, and wind types, with her signature techs effective against dark type. However, her nonexistent machine defense is detrimental to the run, potentially making Dum Dum Factory a run killer.

Starting a stream right now as well trying to get to similar times with other Rookies, too :D You can find it on twitch.tv/desa35 I do think the run can be beaten, but what you don't see are the 100+ hours of resets that went into this grind which you can't underestimate^^
The entire game is an RNG fest. I only get out of the first split less than 20% of the time. MasterTyrannomon is another place that kills ~50% of runs, while Seiryu Leader is at a success rate of 60-70%. Later splits aren't as crazy, but the final few splits can once again make a big difference.
man i first played this game when i was 11 or smth. just had the chance to finish it last year, taking a whole damn week. defeating galacticmon did bring tears to my eyes man. i love this game and thats why i watched this video for 6 full hours. great work man thanks for the nostalgia 🎉🎉

Glad you seemed to like it :D I think I generally excel at longer games like this one or Crisis Core: FFVII. But I also know that many people can't play games for nearly as long^^

Patamon und Kumamon sind beide hochgeladen, aber die runs sind nicht gut genug meiner Meinung nach. Kumamon könnte ich aber eigentlich mal veröffentlichen^^ Bin froh, dass die dir gefallen haben.

If its an emulator, can you tell me what you use and what settings / plugins? Been trying to get my psx emulator running, but there always seem to be some glitches with the visuals or aound happening. Thanks a lot in advance and I'm looking forward to speedruns of you. :-)
I'm playing this on an american PS2 that I imported back in 2019. Emulators are unfortunately not very kind with this game and might pose issues in most cases. You could ask in the digimon speedrunning discord if they have any recommendations. Otherwise I'd recommend RetroArch as that one is the best for Retroconsole emulation in my opinion
6:00 education is basically free nowadays as the informations are mostly freely available on the internet, and due to the importance and benefits of education, in denmark you get even paid 1k€ a month if you educate yourself there
This is done on console with an actual disc, not using a rom / emulator. Other than that pretty much any rom you can find lets you finish the game, at least I haven't had trouble finding anything.
Not seen the speedrun yet, I am going to after I finished my own run of the game! 😁 I played this for about 2 or 3 weeks now? I am not even done, and didn't consider pepole speedrunning this game 😅 When I am done however, this is gonna be awsome to watch! Actually the reason I started replaying this game was because I watched this speedrun whole since I remember having nightmares as a kid with this game because I didn't know what to do in order to advance in the story, my main language is Spanish so I couldn't understand what the text dialogs and since the overworld gets larger the more you advance it becomes increasingly more frustrating to not be able to advance in the game because you didn't speak to certain NPC in some random location and the game sometimes is vague about where you have to go or what have to do. Thanks to watching this I was able to finally beat this game for once
@@trueredpanda1538 yeah but not being able to do something about the encounter rates (like you can just use repel in Pokemon) makes it way harder since even attempting to escape from a Lv1 Kunemon with your highest leveled fastest mon doesn't guarantee you from escaping safely which always pissed me off no matter what. There were some dumb decisions like this but in the end I kind of enjoyed the game now that I eventually figured it out

Speed has a variety of functions. It influences who gets the first turn, how often you get double turns and, the most important part, how likely you are to hit / block an attack. If you have to much speed you start blocking to many attacks which means that Counter Crest can't be triggered as you need to take damage for that.

wie kann es sein, dass du die gegner so schnell fertig machst... ich verlor mit allsen drei pokemon auf evo 1 also einmal weiter digitiert auf level 25. gegen den blacktyranomon am ampfang. und du machst alle schon fast mit 1 treffer vertig mit lv 5 gibt es da einen chancentrick?
Zum einen ist der Kampf mit meiner Route Glückbasiert. Er funktioniert nicht immer. Wichtig ist, dass ich die Blast Evolution / Explosion benutze. Das heißt diese Schwarz-Weiße Leiste unter meinem HP Balken muss vollständig gefüllt sein. Das gibt mir die nächste Digitationsstufe für 2 Runden sowie deren Superattacke. Diese Superattacke ist von sich aus extrem stark und im allgemeinen auch der Grund, weshalb ich diese Route verwende
Something I noticed in the animation of these games... They reused the assets and animation of Digimon World 1 when I saw that Veggiemon... Oh right they reuse the audio and everything too since I remembered Next Order sounds the same for sfx.
This is NTSC which you can tell by several factors: Counter Crest is reliable, 25% on PAL The HP bars both deplete from left to right, depletes from center of the screen to the border on PAL Ther starting position is static, on PAL you have one of 3(?) different camera pans that can occur in each battle

You have to beat Biakko Leader in the Mirage Tower Then remove Digimon from your party until the sum of your Digimon's Levels is lower than 30. Go to Protocol Ruins and find DRI Agent Bob and talk to him twice. Then go over to the South Sector to Bulk Bridge and find Paildramon. Fight him, then go back to DRI Agent Bob to unlock Veemon. Now you can go to any Piximon and add Veemon to your party.

Koemon, Guilmon and Kotemon are all viable for record, but I believe that ultimately Kotemon is the best as he can probably get the fastest time out of all the Rookies. There's a way to make battle easy, get a counter accessory and get heal for your Digimon, up his def and spd some HP and just heal yourself while counter the enemy.
That's exactly what the run is doing actually! You might've not seen the whole thing yet, but the fastest way for most fighst is indeed to use Counter Crest.

Childhood game played professionally by a pro runner. The run was breathtaking and it was such a rollercoaster ride! Got heart attack too when the lag was suddenly happening. Congrats for the WR! I guess sacrificing your sleep for this run was worth it after all.

I remember I started with Kotemon as a kid spamming blade twister to wreck everything in the game haha! Awesome to see it's actually used in a speedrun.

In 5:30:10 when I have conquered the boss for some reason I can't continue the game, I have also tried to load the game but it always happens after I defeat the boss, is there a solution? i dont how to fix this

Good clean run, I remember being in my 40s and struggling on Galacticmon. Meanwhile you casually took him out with a 30 something ultimate form. Crazy strats.
I saved 95 tp for gold ID getting speed up to 800+ which helped trivialize the game :p I fought galacticmon with newly acquired level 40 megas with some nice tech and was sad I beat em so easily without counter crest

I remember playing this game as a kid and somehow beating it using only guilmon. I picked it back up again recently and wondered how fast a speed run would be. You sir did not disappoint. Many things could be the cause for that, but you probably didn't go to the Mirage Tower yet or you're supposed to go to the Admin Center in Asuka Server right now

I love this game and I've never even gotten far in it only to the swamp area then died right away without saving. Now I'm going to sit here and watch you beat it so that I'm pumped to do it Myself.
I grew up with this game, played the hell out of the first three Digimon World games. This speedrun is very good. Of course 3 is so grindy that even a speedrun is 6 hours long. I recently got into 2003 because it has all the extra content post game after Galactimon, so I wonder just how long a "speed-run" for that would have to be.

@@ekoyudi7171 I don't know what the order is you can do things in to be honest, but in the speedrun we go to the Mirage Tower before going to Magasta. You can probably do it the other way around as well, but you might have to go back to Asuka City first and report to the Admin Center.

If you attack Galacticmon 3 times he lowers his head and takes double damage
TNT Ball, which we have from the quest for the Digi-Egg of Sincerity, is a guaranteed hit.
We use it as the 3rd hit to skip his attack and deal crazy damage

@@riztaurolatino4475 While playing this game I realized that there were some equipments that prevented Counter Crest from triggering, like the Raven Bow, the Rock Breaker and one of the Spears Renamon can use. Wearing some of these equipment will override Counter Crest and won't work at all.

I never made one, but I can whip one out real quick:
S: Kotemon
A: Guilmon, Monmon, Kumamon
B:
C: Renamon, Patamon, Agumon
This is for the speedrun itself, but in general I'd structure it similarly. Renamon could be B, but I haven't gotten a good run for it yet
Magic techs aren't reliable in this game; noticed all tier C starters are primarily magic users in their main evolutions.
Renamon could be a tier B starter as her techs are effective against water, machine, and wind types, with her signature techs effective against dark type. However, her nonexistent machine defense is detrimental to the run, potentially making Dum Dum Factory a run killer.

what is the RNG heavy split other than counter crest ?
The entire game is an RNG fest. I only get out of the first split less than 20% of the time. MasterTyrannomon is another place that kills ~50% of runs, while Seiryu Leader is at a success rate of 60-70%.
Later splits aren't as crazy, but the final few splits can once again make a big difference.

man i first played this game when i was 11 or smth. just had the chance to finish it last year, taking a whole damn week. defeating galacticmon did bring tears to my eyes man. i love this game and thats why i watched this video for 6 full hours. great work man thanks for the nostalgia 🎉🎉

Bin jetzt auch durch zufall auf dich gestoßen, aber hatte wahnsinnig Spass. Der run war unglaublich spannend, obwohl ich wusste, dass du den WR knackst, habe ich bei jedem Kampf mitgezittert. Es hat wahnsinnig spass gemacht zuzuschauen. Es würde mich freuen wenn du noch verschiedene Varianten, wie z.B. einen Patamon oder Renamon Run hochladen würdest. Ich hätte viel Spass daran.
P.S. wie war der nächste Tag in der Uni?
Patamon und Kumamon sind beide hochgeladen, aber die runs sind nicht gut genug meiner Meinung nach. Kumamon könnte ich aber eigentlich mal veröffentlichen^^

May I ask you, on what system you play your game? If its an emulator, can you tell me what you use and what settings / plugins? Been trying to get my psx emulator running, but there always seem to be some glitches with the visuals or aound happening.

I'm playing this on an american PS2 that I imported back in 2019.
Emulators are unfortunately not very kind with this game and might pose issues in most cases. You could ask in the digimon speedrunning discord if they have any recommendations.
Otherwise I'd recommend RetroArch as that one is the best for Retroconsole emulation in my opinion
6:00 education is basically free nowadays as the informations are mostly freely available on the internet, and due to the importance and benefits of education, in denmark you get even paid 1k€ a month if you educate yourself there
Where did you find a rom that’s let’s you finish the game?
This is done on console with an actual disc, not using a rom / emulator.
Other than that pretty much any rom you can find lets you finish the game, at least I haven't had trouble finding anything.

Actually the reason I started replaying this game was because I watched this speedrun whole since I remember having nightmares as a kid with this game because I didn't know what to do in order to advance in the story, my main language is Spanish so I couldn't understand what the text dialogs and since the overworld gets larger the more you advance it becomes increasingly more frustrating to not be able to advance in the game because you didn't speak to certain NPC in some random location and the game sometimes is vague about where you have to go or what have to do. Thanks to watching this I was able to finally beat this game for once

@@trueredpanda1538 yeah but not being able to do something about the encounter rates (like you can just use repel in Pokemon) makes it way harder since even attempting to escape from a Lv1 Kunemon with your highest leveled fastest mon doesn't guarantee you from escaping safely which always pissed me off no matter what. There were some dumb decisions like this but in the end I kind of enjoyed the game now that I eventually figured it out

Spirit is both Magic Offense and Defense while Wisdom only changes accuracy and secondary effect success

What is the thought behind too much speed? You mention it a couple times, but what's the reasoning behind it?
Speed has a variety of functions. It influences who gets the first turn, how often you get double turns and, the most important part, how likely you are to hit / block an attack.
If you have to much speed you start blocking to many attacks which means that Counter Crest can't be triggered as you need to take damage for that.

wie kann es sein, dass du die gegner so schnell fertig machst... ich verlor mit allsen drei pokemon auf evo 1 also einmal weiter digitiert auf level 25. gegen den blacktyranomon am ampfang. und du machst alle schon fast mit 1 treffer vertig mit lv 5
gibt es da einen chancentrick?
Zum einen ist der Kampf mit meiner Route Glückbasiert. Er funktioniert nicht immer. Wichtig ist, dass ich die Blast Evolution / Explosion benutze. Das heißt diese Schwarz-Weiße Leiste unter meinem HP Balken muss vollständig gefüllt sein. Das gibt mir die nächste Digitationsstufe für 2 Runden sowie deren Superattacke. Diese Superattacke ist von sich aus extrem stark und im allgemeinen auch der Grund, weshalb ich diese Route verwende

Something I noticed in the animation of these games... They reused the assets and animation of Digimon World 1 when I saw that Veggiemon...
Oh right they reuse the audio and everything too since I remembered Next Order sounds the same for sfx.

This is NTSC which you can tell by several factors:
Counter Crest is reliable, 25% on PAL
The HP bars both deplete from left to right, depletes from center of the screen to the border on PAL
Ther starting position is static, on PAL you have one of 3(?) different camera pans that can occur in each battle

Do u know how to get veemon?
You have to beat Biakko Leader in the Mirage Tower
Then remove Digimon from your party until the sum of your Digimon's Levels is lower than 30.
Go to Protocol Ruins and find DRI Agent Bob and talk to him twice.
Then go over to the South Sector to Bulk Bridge and find Paildramon. Fight him, then go back to DRI Agent Bob to unlock Veemon.
Now you can go to any Piximon and add Veemon to your party.

Koemon, Guilmon and Kotemon are all viable for record, but I believe that ultimately Kotemon is the best as he can probably get the fastest time out of all the Rookies. There's a way to make battle easy, get a counter accessory and get heal for your Digimon, up his def and spd some HP and just heal yourself while counter the enemy.
That's exactly what the run is doing actually! You might've not seen the whole thing yet, but the fastest way for most fighst is indeed to use Counter Crest.
As someone who got all the legendary weapons to beat the top trainer after the game and has 120+ game hours this is nuts
