My girlfriend figured out in the cinema (and she’s not a movie buff at all), that the Taylor Swift character must be friends with the director because the screen time to musical performances made absolutely no sense to the plot. Then when this actress with no acting ability is made the hero it really confirmed that to us. The choices m night made were to make this actress look good, not the movie. Josh showing the singer the boy he caught was done to make the singer look brave the entire time and not naive at any time. Remove that scene and you’d have the singer seemingly dumb and unknowingly taking Josh out of the venue and directly to his home in a limo, like he’s won. If only then you find out she knows it was him, it’d be great for the movie. But this would mean for 15 minutes the audience would think she’s dumb, and it appears m night doesn’t want that.
Also, the boy captured in the room we guess is also related to the director, it’s another thing that ruins the movie. The kid isn’t in pain, isn’t distressed, it’s traumatised. M night just picked some kid and said “hey read these lines”. This poor performance made Josh not seem so scary. It’s also no the MO of a serial killer, to kidnap a 17 year guy? wtf?
At bare minimum, if Josh showed his phone to the singer but we the audience didn’t see anything, we just heard screams or something, our minds would fill in the rest and it’d be a better job that m night does visually. His nepotism ruined this movie

I’d honestly be fine with the nepotism aspect if the rest of the movie made sense. I can forgive some bad acting.

I actually felt a ton of tension. Initially I found myself rooting for Hartnett to not be caught just because I was really into his character and performance. By the end I was feeling tense because I didn't want his daughter's heart broken by the revelation that her dad is a serial murderer. I think the movies strengths far outweigh any of the logic flaws. I love M Night movies so I do generally forgive some of his quirks because I think the overall ride is worth that. To me there are few filmmakers that make movies as fun as him. I wonder if there are any movies you can think of where the "fun" factor or your emotional investment sort of trump any of the logical flaws you might find in them.

The conceit of this film is that it’s supposed to be this tense, cat and mouse thriller, and with that framework in mind, I kind of need it to make logical sense on some level, and this movie just does not. I’m willing to forgive some things here and there but it just piles up too much. I can’t think of any examples, but I know what you mean as far as fun factor outweighing logical inconsistency. I definitely am able to suspend disbelief on occasion but I was not able to with this movie.

I think I was fine with the logic, but you said it, there were no stakes. No real tension or thrills.
Without an ounce of evidence to support my claim, I think this movie is about him. That's the only explanation I have and in no way excuses the film. 😂😂😂

Yeah it’s pretty impossible to buy into the story or characters when everything is so clearly kind of just being made up as it goes along lol. Thanks for watching as always
