Collecting Physical Media Isn't Fun Anymore
มุมมอง 9K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Here I am kinda giving my final thoughts on the topic of physical media as it stands in the modern era. I'm at a point where I don't buy anywhere near as much, blind buying has lost it's appeal, and I'm more likely to stream something before I actually buy it. If you agree with my thoughts lemme know! And if you disagree that's alright too. Intro designed by tylerinternet Follow me ...

Why Thanksgiving Horror Doesn't Work
“Disc replacement program” when i saw that i assumed it was a program that replaces your scratched and damaged CDs, DVDs and Blu rays for new copies. and thought… FINALLY! 😃 Then i was let down😢
Physical media is not failing
You got the poster for the Donnie Darko Arrow release hanging off your wall. Plenty of people had issue getting their corrected discs from Arrow for that very release. Generally I agree with you, if they're going to fix their mistake it shouldn't be a big deal. But there's been instances of companies making customers jump through hoops to verify purchases and get their corrected discs. That leaves a bad taste in people's mouths and the prospect of having to have a back and forth with customer service over something that realistically shouldn't have even been an issue is going to have people bothered.
Hey i appreciate the feedback. Can you go into more detail about what hoops people have had to go through outside of just providing proof of purchase?
People gotta complain. After speaking to the director about the care Second Sight put into this, I’m just excited that it’s happening. It’s about the movie.
Haters gonna hate I guess ahah. Thanks for watching my friend.
I think Halloween II is better than 2018
That’s valid
It's refreshing to watch a TH-cam video where someone is telling me what they think rather than telling me what to think. It makes the content so much more enjoyable and digestible. This feels like listening to a friend. I chose to stick with 1080p blu-ray and invest in a 4K OLED TV with awesome AI upscaling instead of buying 4K blu-rays. Is it the same? No. Does it still look mind-bendingly amazing? You bet!
Wow I really appreciate this comment. This is what I strive for in many ways. Thanks for watching !
Great video, man. I just did a review/analysis of it on my channel.
I wanted to buy Mandolorian seasons 1&2 on 4k, but it was too expensive. So I passed. I did get Titanic and Aliens.
It’s hard to justify the cost sometimes!
Halloween is not scary it's a stupid dumb movie that is way overrated and overhyped. and gets way to much credit when its a stupid terrible movie with no good plot at all. It has alot of contradictions and terrible acting to it. not only that but the movie gets to much credit for acting like it revolutionized the slasher genre when it did not. and it even plagiarized and stole off of other slasher movies that came before it such as. the town that dreaded sundown, black christmas, and the texas chainsaw massacre But people like to say friday the 13th is a rippoff. witch is funny to me becouse halloween is a blatant riploff of the horror moves i just stated
😂
I think we'll always find aspects of collecting that we aren't fans of. I have a ton of gripes with physical media but at the end of the day I love having my favorite films on the shelf for when I get the itch to enjoy.
Amen
Vibed with alot of the sentiments laid out here. So many collectors have tons of crappy TV and mediocre films. People need to CURATE their collection not fomo into a need to own every subpar B movie horror ever released
Curation is so important
Very sage advice. This is a great video. New sub - I look forward to watching your other content. I actually don’t buy many movies but when I do it’s for odd reasons. I will actually buy a cheap DVD because it’s cheaper, I’m only gonna watch it a few times if that, and the cover art is better in that there’s more of it and it looks cooler. I actually don’t own many 4k movies but I look forward to buying them used. I will buy groups of movies when there are sales. For instance, about a year ago I bought 30 or so Indicator Films on Blu-ray because they were so cheap and they are packed with special features, making it worth the money for me.
That’s a great system to have, I’m a big fan of sales too!
I’ve taken a year long break and it was probably one of the best financial decisions I’ve made while collecting. I’ll start buying physical media again, but I don’t need everything. All I want is to curate a collection that means something to me and one day be done. I no longer care about the shiny limited edition box sets for films I’ll probably not even like.
With me, I’ll never be fully “done” because there’s new movies coming out every year that I wanna own. But as far as back catalogue stuff, I pretty much own everything I feel like I need.
I totally agree. It is crazy to say this but I've basically dropped out of the physical media collector hobby. Back in the day, I collected VHS, then DVD, then blu ray, but when 4K came along I jumped ship. I simply cannot justify those insane prices. Nor am I interested in rebuying everything I've bought before. I'm not a slip cover fetishist, so I also got left behind when so much more emphasis stated being placed on presentation and packaging. The era of a great, obscure movie loaded with come cool features at a decent price are over. And so I'm OUT!!
I wouldn’t say the era of a movie with good features is over. That’s still very much a thing.
The age of movie is my main factor when looking at newer formats, what can they do to this 90s movie in 4k that was already done in Blu-ray. The only upgrades I have ever done has been The Lord of the Rings extended because Peter Jackson himself put the effort in to improve, even then I got 4k cheap.
Fine interview , you're a natural , you let the man talk and had great questions . Mike was very generous with giving so much credit to everybody that had anything to do with getting the movie and the new transfer made . Take a bow , you deserve it .
Thank you so much man! It means a lot to me. I appreciate you watching.
My first time watching one of your videos, well done video. 💯 agree on everything you said! I’m getting tired of it as well! I don’t cave into 4K when I have the blu, and I wish other people wouldn’t either. Just subscribed
@@martinthomas3958 thank you so much! That means a lot
I dont know if anyone does this but depending on how old the movie is and the genre, I decide the format. 1970s 007? VHS ... Oldschool? Dvd... Transformers? Bluray or 4k i dont need HD to take away film grain, but thats just me.
Not a bad practice !
Locked in an old fridge? I’m sorry what? What happened to you man?
😭 I was let out immediately. We had an interesting childhood..
I think the last Blu Ray I bought was Captain America Civil War back when it came out.
My philosophy is I only acquire it if I stumble upon it in a thrift store for under $3 (and it essentially matches my list of stuff I'm looking for) This way you don't spend ridiculous amounts of cash, and each find has a memory attached to it
I’m with you on the “memory attached to it” aspect. That’s what makes it fun for me too.
i collect vhs its all i care about with movies
Great interview i enjoyed hearing some stuff I've never heard before. I'm still on X/Twitter definitely not jumping to a different platform but I'll see if a few other film nerds can help put the word out and hopefully one day Lion's gate will release their own version here in the states.
Thanks for the support!
Only 24 hours in everyday. Can't watch 2 movies at the same time. Same as Can't play 2 games at the same time. My takes on it, only bay what you wants to watch and play. Equality over Quantity.
This dude is cool as hell
Yes he is lol
My Case is different. I never own any Movies in any Format, so 4K for me is no brainer. I decided to start collecting 4k movies in 2020 and i have close to 500 movies, and out of those 500 movies, at list 450 are in 4k. I don't BUY just for buying and keep up with the Jones. My Rules are Simple, No Double Deeping of any kind and I only buy the the movies that will be watching more than one. So Far no Regret and I planning to keep it that way. Great Content and New to your channel.
I’m glad you’ve found a collecting system that works for you!
this is so sick man🥲

I found a tv exactly like this for 30 and it works even the vcr unit built in it with remote
Do you think it might be worth it

Great interview, Mark! You're a natural. 👏🏻
Thanks so much!
Man ur living my dream
I agree, Dead Silence is very meh
To me, I still collect physical media for both Blu-Ray and DVD. I’m not allowed to collect 4K Blu-ray because it is looking very expensive as opposed to standard Blu-ray. Standard Blu-ray is more cheaper than 4K Blu-ray. Furthermore, I am allowed to just stick to 1080p from now on and I would be very real to me.
Yeah it's definitely tough to justify the cost of 4K sometimes
I just upgraded my dvd of Gene Wilder Willy Wonka to a standard blu ray, and I was very underwhelmed and disappointed. Is the 4k worth getting?
I don’t have that one but I’ve heard it’s a good transfer
The new shout factory release of Coraline on standard blu Ray is breathtaking in its visual quality. Just sayin
Note: I keep my old DVD version because it comes with the theatrical 3D version and 3D glasses
bluray already in good quality and they are very cheap, buy a bundle even get you cheaper ! franchise / collections/ trilogy..dont mind the cover, just print the poster on ur own and put on the wall if you really want that movie kind of art badly
I love your candor and humbleness. Subscribed!
Thank you so much for the kind words, I appreciate it!
This movie was a pretentious attempt at talking about real mental health issues and trauma, anytime the protag might be reliving her trauma again , it's immediately seen as the works of the Entity . Frustrating experience.
I couldn’t agree more tbh.
I get too overwhelmed at the new versions and releases (with music too) and when i get overwhelmed like that… the fun is over.
Yeah our hobbies definitely shouldn’t make us feel overwhelmed. I agree with that for sure.
Just wanted to drop a comment and say this was a good high quality video! Surprised when I saw the view count and sub count. I think the closest experience people could get to the PR for this movie during the early years of the www would be creepypasta ARGS today.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I appreciate that a lot.
I have been collecting for a while. One of my "core" philosophy which worked for me so far is - Do not buy the same movie twice. Here is how i do it - (1) When I buy a movie, I try to buy the best format available for example buy the 4KUHD-Blu Ray combo if available vs. just the Blu Ray or just 4KUHD. Collector set/box set over individual release. (2) Maintain a catalog (i have a Letterboxd list) so I don't buy the same movie again, by mistake. (3) Even if I miss out a release with a slip case and the same movie is later available with an updated slip case or packaging element, I won't touch it.
I love that rule! It’s always a great goal to have a collection that represents quality and not just quantity.
Thanks for the valid wise words. I agree with you. The 4K transfers indeed are more a gimmick at times. I liked your boutique label treatment comment and the "polishing a turd". There seems a deafening silence on the other side, Studios etc saying why the silly prices, owning and admitting to visual or audio quality that isn't much over Blu Ray. Movies are art, a conversation, an experience -- physical Media needs to be profitable for those who make it but indeed seems, as you adeptly put it, anri consumer come pricing etc Streaming since 2020 showed people they didn't need to go to the novies, and idiotic Covid responses forced people onto streaming as cinemas closed etc Now streaming, in my opinion, has proven nothing more than a parasitic blight upon the Cinematic Arts. And it dominates how people consume entertainment and how some content is created...with Actors and all involved getting more a bum deal while Streaming services continue to make profit off the created content. Streaming services ensures less jobs, less people involved, less business. Physical Media employs people, causes economic overflow into other industries (like Hospitality, like the Video rental store) - "going to the movies" was a thing once and many pple benefited from it Streaming services pocket most of that now.
It's a shame streaming has become the dominant force and that it's pushed physical media aside.
Haha , the comments are a fun read , seems people don't understand opinions can differ . It's good to see people defending a movie they like but it can be done more gracefully . I didn't like the first Smile so I have no opinion on the second and I have no interest in seeing it . Thanks for the review .
@@TheUndeadOfNight I try to treat everyone with respect despite disagreeing haha gotta just kill em with kindness. Thanks for watching my friend.
Great video, and good info to know. Some titles you can def prob hold out and hope for a 4K release. Cant wait for Robert Eggers Nosferatu. One of my most anticipated films of the year.
Thank you! Yeah I’m incredibly excited for Nosferatu
I'm still on DVD. Never upgraded to blu-ray. There isn't much new coming out I enjoy and I have most of the older media I love on DVD already so it doesn't really cost me much continuing my collection with the odd new movie or TV show I want on DVD.
Sorry for a long comment but it will be worth reading! :D Always making me happy when someone talks fondly of this masterpiece. I didn't enjoy it when it came out cause I was 11 and had just gotten into slasher films. I wanted bl00d. I rewatched it later in life and realized it was one of the greatest movies ever made. Definetely the scariest scenario I could ever imagine myself being in. And my love for it grows the more I find out about how they created it. I don't care about the way it was advertised, I care about the little information the actors had while filming it. If the hateful audience knew that, I think they'd change their minds. Some cute trivia from my personal life; I had posted about Blair witch on instagram back in 2014 and hashtagged it. I live in Sweden. A guy from Canada found the post and since he loved the movie too, he commented and we started talking. 1 year later he came to see me and stayed for 2 months and we dated long distance for a long time. We are still great friends. This movie connected me with a great person who once was a great love. Another amazing trivia if you read all of this is that Kenny Caperton (who lives in the Myers House replica) visited the filming locations a couple of years ago, and just randomly stumbled upon the exact same fishermen at the exact same place as they were in the movie. 20 years later. Gives me goosebump just thinking about this. You can see that on his instagram Myershousenc but you have to scroll back a bit! <3 Thanks for a great video.
Also, I am a stupid girl who loves adrenaline and I go urban exploring alone a lot. We have thousands of abandoned houses in Sweden. If you just google "abandoned house Sweden" you can see what some of they look like over here. I never think about creepy things and just do it cause I love photography. But one time, it got dark and I was on the phone with a friend while leaving one of these houses. He, funnily according to him, shouted in the phone "TELL ME WHERE YOU ARE JOSH" and I nearly fainted. Lmao.
Glad you did a sequal to the 1st one
Thanks for all the support
