Yamaha Superjet/Waverunner No Start / No Spark - Bad Start/Stop Switch?

  • Yamaha start/stop switches are notorious for causing no-start problems due to no spark. If your Superjet or WaveRunner cranks but won't fire or start, rule out the start/stop switch first. It's quick and easy!
    Replacement start/stop switch: Yamaha EW2-68311-01-00
    New start/stop switches can be purchased here: www.yamahapart...
    Note: now that I've replaced my switch, the engine only cranks when the lanyard is attached. With the lanyard removed, nothing happens when I press the start button. When I had a bad switch, the engine would crank whether or not the lanyard was attached.

    Worked perfect! It was getting water shy. It was hard to start and consistently started the rest of the day when it got going, but just got harder and harder to start. This fixed it!

    🎉 I had this exact same issue on my 1992 VXR 650. Mine actually would not crank over. It was just as if it stopped electrical work altogether.

    • @pennccp
      @pennccp ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d almost rather have that problem…when it cranks but doesn’t start you begin wondering about compression, carburetors, and other things that aren’t related to the actual problem!

  • @itsasher

    Thanks for the video this appears to be my issue and an easy test to perform. Not necessarily an easy diagnosis but glad I came here. For my ski I am still able to see spark on the spark plugs which doesn't make sense to me. Not sure if it's only a partial spark if that is even possible. 1990 SN superjet.

      @unstuckchuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Chylez. If you're seeing spark with all electrical connectors connected while cranking, this video won't help you. Assuming you've got good compression, your problem lies with your fuel system. Maybe time for a carburetor rebuild?

    I have a 96 waveraider 760 and I'm having trouble locating this plug. could it be inside the electrical box? I can't even fiqure out how to get that box off. I'm getting nothing when I put my key in and try to hit start button. It started a few weeks ago but then I washed the inside of the engine bay over the weekend and it's not doing anything. maybe something got wet?? thanks for any help

    • @unstuckchuck
      @unstuckchuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Chris, given that your starter doesn't engage you've got a different issue than what I describe in this video. That said, I'd try jumping the starter relay in the electrical box if you get that open. (The starter relay is the roundish black plastic thing with the two thick red wires bolted to it. Jump it by touching a screwdriver or other conductor to both terminals.) If your starter engages when you do that, you know the problem isn't the starter but instead either the starter relay or the start/stop switch or wiring. A wiring diagram for the starting system can be found on page 141 of the Waveraider service manual accessible here: www.mediafire.com/file/m23nhrffo1d/Yamaha_Service_Manual_WaveRaider_94_to_97.pdf/file

    • @unstuckchuck
      @unstuckchuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First, make sure all electrical connectors for the start/stop switch are connected and you don't have any broken wires between that and the ebox. If no problem there, your start/stop switch may be faulty. Go to page 7-9 of the service manual at the following URL for a continuity chart to check your start/stop switch with a multimeter. A wiring diagram for that system is shown on page 7-8. www.mediafire.com/?d09ct9u1plmros1

    • @unstuckchuck

      Look for a disconnected connector or break in the black/white wires that come from the start/stop switch as shown in this video.

    • @unstuckchuck
      @unstuckchuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you get spark when the wire is unplugged? If yes, then the start stop switch is bad. If no, then you have another electrical problem.

    I just bought a 91 Waverunner W500. Mine won't crank at all with the start button and lanyard attached. Cross out the solenoid and it cranks, then starts and runs great. Start button possibly corroded?

    • @unstuckchuck
      @unstuckchuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you find if you disconnect the black/white pair of wires as I describe in the video? If it starts when those are disconnected then the problem is somewhere in the start/stop switch. If it doesn't start with those disconnected then your solenoid is probably the issue. Good to hear that it starts when jumping the solenoid. That rules out any corroded connections along the big starter cables at least.

      I don’t know, but it’s easy to find out - just disconnect the connector for the black/white wires as I mention in the video. If it clicks/cranks/starts with the connector disconnected but not with it connected, the switch is the problem.

      If you look at it from the bow or switch side. Orient it so that the small tab inside is on top. Lift up on this tab and then pull gently on the wires on the bow side. The smaller bow end of the connector should then slide out of the larger stern side.
