    Hi Thelma, been purchasing this plant since 2003 and gave up a few years ago since they do not survive where I live. However, after watching this feature and seeing your beautiful specimens, I am tempted to give it another try and will do my best this time to keep it alive🤦‍♀️. Even my dear mother purchased it a few times in the past as well. Thanks as always for imparting your knowledge to us, cheers and happy gardening🙌👌🌹

      Yep, they can be picky! I lost one when I moved it from its comfortable but hidden location to a more exposed area where I could see and enjoy the blooms. Big mistake, she went on strike and slowly faded away🥲
      It's great to see you're back, sharing your precious orchid tips with us again🙏💕

    Hi from Kuala Lumpur. Even though medinillas are native to Southeast Asia, it's quite obscure here in Malaysia as a garden plant.

    Beautiful
    Unfortunately my Medinilla Magnifica was not doing Well. As soon the Pink blooms Open up, the Little blooms inside died and fell off and the stem turned Black from the inside. Happend to two plants. What did I wrong?

    • @thelmamccatty9181
      @thelmamccatty9181 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This sounds like a rot or blight affecting the flowers. Symptoms such as those you describe may develop if medinilla is getting too much moisture or if the location is too dark. But be careful not to give it too much light!
      It's not the easiest plant to maintain 🙄🤞

    Does this plant need any support? Like
    Moss pole or bamboo stick. Can we plant this in a pot or a hanging basket. Please advise. Thanks.

    • @gardeningwithcalyx
      @gardeningwithcalyx  หลายเดือนก่อน

      These are very good questions. A single Medinilla plant growing by itself should be supported as its stems can get quite lanky. Attach stems to poles similar to what you would use for tomatoes. Moss poles are not necessary as Medinilla does not have tendrils or other means of attaching itself.
      Medinilla grows well in pots but make sure pots are large enough to support the size and weight of the particular plant. Growing in Medinilla in hanging baskets is not recommended.

    Do they branch out if you cut them or trim them?

    • @thelmamccatty9181
      @thelmamccatty9181 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, just like many other plants, medinilla plants send out side shoots when pruned. That's how you control the height of the plant. But try not to prune a week, drought stressed plant as it may not survive.

    Will it rot in regular soil? Can I plant it in my garden in a soil bed that's well draining

    • @thelmamccatty9181
      @thelmamccatty9181 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried growing medinilla in the ground but I don't see why not if the soil is free-draining. I'd suggest mixing compost or well cured manure or similar organic fertilizer in the planting hole. Also select a cool, shaded spot; definitely avoid sunny locations; and don't let the soil dry out between watering. 😊💕

      Depending on the size and age, I would say about 18 months before your medinilla blooms.

      Thanks for your comment and sorry for the delayed response. We're located 2000 ft above sea level in central Jamaica in the Caribbean. It's a pleasant warm temperature year round (not too hot) I think if you have a similar climate in Goa you should be able to grow medinella.

    My Medinilla leaves started turning yellow after I gave water for the 1st time. I had it for like 2 weeks. It's by the window, it gets indirect light. What could be wrong?

    • @angelhawk-fr9uh
      @angelhawk-fr9uh ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be one of a couple things....too cool....has root rot or hard water....medinillas seriously hate calcium and can kill them in the blink of an eye...causes all the leaves to yellow and drop off...water them with distilled water, rain water or reverse osmosis water which u can find at any store

    • @thelmamccatty9181
      @thelmamccatty9181 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Medinilla is very sensitive to changes in environment. Chances are it was in a higher humidity environment prior to your acquiring it. So, if it's getting indirect light and high humidity, hopefully it will settle down soon.🤞🤞
