    I have known Medinilla Magnifica just for 3 yrs & found out that this particular species of Medinilla is endemic in my country Philippines. Out of 400 species of Medinilla they say this is the most beautiful. Magnificent indeed. But this is not famous in my country. I am a newbie landscape artist. 2 years ago, I made a garden for a celebrity. I used 6 extremely big Medinilla Magnifica, about 8 ft tall & 7 ft wide! I love this plant and I want to do a campaign to make this our national flower!

    Thank you so much for this video! You have no idea. Really appreciate it. 7 years later still hard to find info on this plant lol Just ordered the medinilla myriantha hoping to keep it alive and thriving here in Boston.

    Thank you for sharing! I received this elegant plant last June as a gift from a friend who owns a greenhouse business in Temagami (lucky me!!). Keeping the soil drier did not seem to cause any problems when the plant went dormant after blooming. I did notice that an increase in watering and not letting the soil go bone dry in between waterings initiated new shoot/leaf growth. Also, as you noted, you can't let the soil get too dry when the plant is in growth because the leaves will crinkle and look terrible and distorted. It will also cause the developing buds to shrivel and possibly even drop. Looking forward to view another update!

    Thanks for posting and opening the discussion. I too have had a Instructions I got said, water by placing the pot in water rather than pouring water from the top. I too found that certain conditions made the leaves come out deformed and curled. And I see you have yellow spots on a few leaves. This also happened to me. So I water it when it feels light and dried out. I sometimes dig a finger down into the soil a bit to see if I find moisture. I then place it in a large kitchen pot with 2 litres of water in it. I wait 1/2 hour to an hour, then remove the plant and put it back on it's usual saucer.
    This is my second Medinilla. When I had to leave Canada for three months in January 2015, I wrapped it up in polar blankets and a big plastic bag and quickly transferred it to a warm car and brought it to a plant-o-phile friend. But she told me it died within a week. Cold-shock. She bought me a new one and when I got back it was spring and warmer and it survived the trip home. It had one flower on it. Once the flower died off, I snipped it away. The new plant has produced a prodigious number of new leaves, some curly, some with spots, some perfect. Like you, I believe it has to do with ambient moisture. In the winter I mist the leaves, particularly new ones.
    BUT! No flowers. I wonder if you found any ways to induce flowers?
    I followed the instructions on the Medinilla.ca website, and fed the plant with light fertilizer only when flowers are NOT blooming. As soon as I give it food, BINGO new leaves form.
    But what about bracts/flowers?
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the wonderful world of Medinilla :) These plants need a night time temp drop in order for it to get ready for bloom. that's why you will notice flower production in the spring or fall or both. but the new growth takes a while to grow so it seems like after it puts out a new flush of leaves it flowers. but it's not a rule.

    I bought one two years ago on a Easter Monday when my local grocery store had marked all of their Easter plants and flowers down to $0.99! It had beautiful blooms and limited care instructions and I was kinda busy and it nearly died on me by this year I have been diligently working to help it to thrive. Your orchid looks fantastic next to mine but I have been doing A LOT of reading about these orchids and am determined to pull mine through and help it to be a show piece among my many plants. Thanks for the video!

    Hi there! I'm new to this, but my guess is this plant being an epiphyte like airplants and orchids, it would prefer to be in porous or terracotta pot made of clay which allows air and water to pass through, versus other types of pots. Once planted in a clay pot, then it can be in another type of pot. Also I guess, putting it in a bigger container with water will help raise the moisture around it. Just my ideas for babying, and hope it returns the pampering and happiness. Also, watering need might be easier to know than regular orchids as the big leaves will start drooping, then it will be needing a drink in a day or two, depending on the room humidity, temperature, etc., about once a week. Happy growing!😊

    It's been an adventure trying to care for mine. It seems to be similar to an orchid in the watering aspect. But it's going through a very odd period right now. I am trying to learn as much as I can. The leaves are very healthy. But man the flower makes a mess when it seeds. Glad to see stuff on utube!

    I’ve read high humidity is necessary so keep on tray of wet rocks. Kept damp but not wet soil, and lots of sun but not scorching. Never grew one but it’s very pretty. 👍🏻

  • @WaterspoutsOfTheDeep
    @WaterspoutsOfTheDeep 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sounds like the issue is more the medium it's planted in. It would probably like lots of pumice and coco chips for a lot more air yet these things still hold moisture so then a regular watering schedule could be used and not worrying about it staying too wet.

    This is the 3rd year I have my Medinilla now, and it is doing fine, but not as big as I would like it to be or as the one seen in this video. But, I am ok with that. I have been following the watering instruction - to leave it dry to the point when it is light to lifting before watering. About once a week in my case. Mine have flowers coming out in Spring and they last till the fall, and new leaves also come out during these months (in other words, my plant seem to be dormant in the darker winter months.) However, the leaves don't grow as big as I see everywhere else, and that some of the leaves are all curled and crinkled up. I just thought it was just the way it is. Never thought that it has any correlation between it and the lack of water during the growing months as I saw on this vid. Now (April/May at the moment) that I have a couple of new flower and leave shoots coming out, maybe I should give it more water and see if the flowers and leaves will grow in a better shape.
    I am also trying to find a spot outdoor in the summer so that I can put it outside this summer. I started doing that last summer but the frakking squirrels kept knocking the plant stand down thus breaking some of the young leaves that were growing at that time. And to add salt to the wound, on one Indian Summer day last fall I mistakenly put it under the sun ... Very bad idea ! The strong sun of that day burned a number of mature leaves and they died and dropped off soon after :(

      Hello, I have two of these I bought last year. I'm finding them similar in their care as orchids...water when nearly dry, humidity required, morning sun but not hot direct sun. I've made some mistakes as it was trial and error for me with very little information found on it's care on the Internet..somehow I'm managing to get blooms at least from one plant:)

    Help! My Medinilla was soaked when I bought her 2 weeks ago. I let her it for a few days, then repotted. Roots were growing out and looking ok, but wet. I thought of air drying before repotting, but the new soil I had was fairly dry, so I thought it would soak it up. Some days later, everything starts dropping and the flowers are done. I took her out now to air dry... it’s winter here and the room is quite cool especially from evening to morning. Days are fairly bright considering. If anyone has advise, I’d appreciate❣️ Thanks for the video! We’re waiting for an update 😉

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The flowers will naturally drop... I found this plant to be very messy... the Bracts (Pink modified leaves) hang on for a long time... If there are too much stress, you will likely loose these "flowers" but with good care you should get more blooms in the spring and then the fall.... treat these like a Phalaenopsis orchid... they like a cool period to set the flowering.. this is usually aided by the warm days and cool nights in the spring and fall when we typically aren't using the heat in the house.. hope this helps

  • @PlantzNThings
    @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    it is usually a 10 or 15 degree F drop in temp over night.. I have mine close to a window, to get the natural dips in temps at night.

    Wonderful plant! I saw one for the first time here in the U.S. a few weeks ago. Of course I had to have it :) They had theirs in a mix of dirt/sphagnum moss. I hate sphagnum moss and end up rotting plants in it, so repotted it in Terra Cotta and miracle gro orchid mix (regular). I did that because I heard it is an epiphyte. I had no idea the stems could harden to a bark like that. I need a flickr account....I think yours looks really nice :)

    all the information i can find on this plants are: winter: min.18°C , not to warm in the summer.
    watering when the surface of the soil is dry
    but that's where it ends.
    Some guys say: very light spot, but no direct sunlight (to me that seem legit - doesnt look like one growing in the sun..)
    but on the other hand i've read from a guy that has the 3rd bloom growing it in direct sunlight during the whole year.

    The sampaguita (Jasminum sambac) is our national flower. But they passed a new bill this year, to make a 2nd national flower, the Waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana). Try to check this. Waling-waling is also endemic to Mindanao, the 2nd largest island in the Philippines. They say it is the Queen of Philippine Orchids.. :)

    Is it root bound? A root bound plant will get “dry” the day after you water it because the excess roots just don’t have any medium around it to keep it moist.

    I have had this plant thriving in my shaded garden for eleven years now, two of them, both about 3-4 feet tall. It flowers beautifully every year for quite a long time, but I notice it's starting to look tired. I would love to know how to care for it. All it has is worm pee. Should it be pruned?

    Hi,Could you help me with my Medinilla? I have it since July thi year. it stopped blooming but the flowers are still "connected" to the plant. Do I just leave them there or cut them off ? It doesn't have any new growth coming out yet, but its healthy and happy.
    Is it a slow grower? :) I see new growth on all my other plants except for Medinilla.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the bracts are still pink you can leave them on... I would usually just remove the spent flowers. if you want to remove the whole bloom stem including the bract that's up to you. I found that these are not really slow growers... but they do have rest periods. when it blooms it will rest... then it will put out a flush of growth... and then rest.... then if you're lucky a bloom and then repeat that process again.

      Hi Sandy, I have had my Medinilla for almost 4 years. It has never bloomed. But... I think I finally have blooms on it. I had to learn , unlike what this video shows , The leaves that are turning up and crinkling .. needs humidity. When I put my medinilla outside in the Georgia humidity .. and to my surprise the leaves straightened out.You live you learn. Also It does need cold and warm air. I think the change in weather going from winter to summer triggers the blooming effect. I will not put my Medinilla in direct sun. It will burn their precious leaves.But I go from indoors to outdoors. If you need anymore information I have , please email me or I am on facebook. debbiesimons55@gmail.com. Debra Simons on fb.

    Hello, I know this is an old video but was wondering if you still have this plant, and how it's doing...I have two which I bought last year, and like you, have found limited care information on the web. One thing I did find is that it likes humidity. Mine are repotted in mostly peat moss and I water once every two weeks when mix is mostly dry. They are growing well now but had a rough time at first due to scale pest infestation. one has developed a bloom and the other is showing something happening with 2 leaves but it's too soon for me to know if it's new growth or blooms forming.
