Can it propagate from a leaf? I don’t not live in a tropical climate. East central Jersey. Thank you.
We haven’t tried propagating crown of thorns from leaves, but doubt that it would be successful as you’d have to wait 2 - 3 days until the sap stops flowing and the petiole end calluses. By this time the leaf would be very wilted, almost dead!
Great informative video. I have a mature crown of thrones with lots and lots of green leaves with no blooms this year. Stayed outdoors in direct sunlight. Can I prune now beginning of October here in Canada before bringing it indoors for the winter. Perhaps this will recharge the plant.
Hi Annette, I would trim it before taking it inside, especially as some leaves will yellow and drop as it acclimated to the indoors. When you move it outside next spring, water sparingly and if you fertilize choose a product low in nitrogen and high in phosphorus and potassium. This should encourage the plant to bloom rather than produce leaves.

@@thelmamccatty9181 ok. Thanks. Pruned it, took cuttings. I've also potted up the cuttings, as per your video but I'm finding a few yellow leaves here and there in the pots. Is this normal on my potted cuttings. Thanks again.
That's very normal, it's how crown of thorns respond to stress. Pruning and moving indoors are both very stressful 😢
But I expect they'll be fine, just continue to keep them in the bright location and hold back on the watering.
They can propagate ....what kind of soil? How long do they take to root?

We did a video on propagating crown of thorns that provides the info you need. I recommend you watch this.
It takes about 8 weeks for crown of thorns stems to root well. I use a sterile, porous media (no soil,) of sand, perlite and vermiculite.

My crown of thorns was growing very tall and leggy, with many single-branch, tall pieces. Over time I noticed the flowers at the end of the tall pieces would dry out and fall off. Now I tried to prune and cure back some of those pieces that were dead at the end, when I cut them. There is no sap - kind of dry on the inside, while some other branches have green leafs and pink pedal flowers looking beautiful. What do I make of the long dried out pieces? Can I cut them back, replant the top ends that I cut?
This happened to one of my crown of thorns that had gotten very rootbound and I had to repot.
Definitely prune any dead or drying stalks. You may also want to clip healthy branches that are much taller than the others to improve the shape of the plant. And if it's root bound, repotting would help to stimulate new growth.

@@thelmamccatty9181 I was worried because I am losing so many of the long dried up branches so I clipped one that had green leaves and some pink flowers on it, I have placed it in water to propagate, but it seems to be losing leaves and haven’t noticed any roots yet. I let it dry for one day - it did have sap at first, and then I put it in the water. Should I be concerned? Is there a way for me to send you a photo of it?
@@thelmamccatty9181 thank you for your help! I have cut most of the dead branches now (they all had no sap, all the way up and down the branch). I still have one very mature and thick branch that has two shoots with green leaves and some flowers and both of these pieces have new baby leaves coming from the top. and then there is one skinnier, shorter branch that has green leaves and had some flowers. I have cut off 5 or 6 long branches that had dried out - very sad. All that is left are these two and then the one propagating in water that hopefully I can start a new plant from now
What about the brown old flowers? Do I cut them or leave them on.
The old flowers drop easily so I usually don't bother to pick them, much quicker to sweep or rake the area occasionally. But if you have the time, go ahead and pick them😊

What fertilizer do you use?
I use 14-14-14 slow-release fertilizer every 3 months to encourage growth. I apply a soluble fertilizer high in potassium (e.g., 7-12-40) once or twice per month to encourage blooms in the cooler months (Nov - Mar).
What to do with crown of thorn sap
Stay away from it! It causes skin irritation and can be poisonous if invested.
Do Crown of Thorns like direct sunlight?
Yes, they bloom much more when in direct sunlight.
After pruning where do the new stems grow from? Meaning, will it get bustier at the top or sides?

Yes I do, but am careful not to apply too much nitrogen. If they're yellow and growing slowly I'll apply a balanced NPK blend every 2 months or so. I'll switch to a blend higher in potassium in the cooler months which is the main flowering period.
