Wiring LOCKUP TORQUE CONVERTER for LS Swap - UTX

  • Today at Ugly Truck, we're wiring up the TCC on our LS swapped 1970 C10. When we swapped this truck, we were a little impatient and never finished the wiring for the lock-up torque converter, so today's the day! This truck has a 4L60E transmission, and the wiring harness and fuse box from a 2004 Tahoe, which makes it easy to steal power from the stop lamp fuse and use it to power up our torque converter. The tricky part is tying into the original C10 brake light switch to disengage the TCC, but we've said it before... RELAYS ARE FRIENDS!!

    I love these video's you post. I've done many swaps but I have always used aftermarket systems both carb and TB EFI so I literally have a pile of truck intakes, Gen 3 and a Gen 4 DBW harness and PCM's all boxed up taking up space so you have encouraged me to sacrifice one of the Gen 3's to cut down and rewire the harness myself. I have a '88 S10 that's crying for a 4.8 I have and a T5 WC out of a '88 Camaro, the stock PCM and harness would be perfect for it. (low buck) Now just to find a 'vette intake and accessory drive, another bug hunt and reengining project. Please keep up the video's, they really help.

    Yeah, you broke 4k. Love the close ups on the BUTT connectors. Hard to believe a crimp isn't required. I just put a new headlight switch in my 72 k10. I found a headlight harness that draws power directly from the battery instead of through the switch. Hopefully I don't have to do it again, that switch is bad to access and hard to get the knob removed

      We've been talking about upgrading our camera, so the BUTT connector close ups might get even better! 😁 And I'm in a similar situation with that switch... My tail lights only work if you have it in just the right spot, but it's such a bear to get to I've never bothered to fix it. We've had that dash and steering column out a dozen times, and every time we say it's the last time. 🤣 Thanks for watching, Bill!!

Your video has been a real help, but I'm not 100% confident in making that step as of yet because there are several different variations on how to do this and I want the best solution for my car. @UglyTruckExperience  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! We've kept the factory gauges on the last few swaps that we've done, and on my 70 C10. I'll have to find you some links, but there's an oil pressure adapter that goes from the original gauge to the oil cooler lines on the LS. I believe ICT or LSX makes them. We use a temp sensor adapter that goes in the passenger side cylinder head, also ICT. Here's a link for the speedometer. We used a Dakota Digital adapter and it's been great! th-cam.com/video/hLqXYWG_WhY/w-d-xo.html

    I would prefer adding a second brake switch or replacing the brake switch with one that has NC and NO switches inside. That way you eliminate the relay, and are not dependent on it to function to unlock the torque converter. But hey, this works fine... until it doesn't. O_O

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  ปีที่แล้ว

      If these we're my own vehicles, I may do that. When these trucks leave us they could get a few years down the road and need a new brake switch here and there. I try not to mess with it's original switches or add in the event something needs replaced in the future. If they run it to a mechanic and they can't figure out that a relay has failed, I hope they take it to another shop. Thanks for watching. We appreciate it. Jerry and Emily

    Good afternoon UTX, I am doing my first LS swap and you have helped immensely. My car is up and running and I’m working on hooking up the torque converter wiring. I have done exactly what your video says but cannot get the scan tool to tell me that the TCC is enabled. The only difference between my build is that my ecu and wiring came from a 2000 suburban (LM7) and yours came from a 2004 Tahoe. Does this make a difference? The pin out on the 2000 says 33 is indeed the TCC input.

      Looks like the wiring for the TCC is exactly the same. Power to 33 would be all you need to get TCC to lock up. Scan tool won't show enable until above 45 mph at least. I have taken some for a drive and had to drive them a good amount before it would show enabled. Will your scan tool show you a Data on whether ECM is showing that brake signal? Jerry

    On my LS swap I am experiencing what appears to be a torque converter that STAYS locked up. When I come to a stop it is dragging the engine down and you have to hold very firm on the pedal to keep it stopped. It is so bad that sometimes if you stop relatively quickly it will stall the motor, you can watch the RPM's drop below idle speed. I am running a 4L65E OEM CPU, and custom aftermarket Speartech wiring for engine / transmission controls. The directions indicate one "control wire" from the CPU to the brake switch "to normally closed brake switch, zero volts when brakes are APPLIED." Thoughts? Thanks.

I was going to do it without the relay by getting one of those brake switches that has the brake switch in it and the switch that was power until the peddle is depressed to use for the tcc.. Possible battery drain from having that circuit constantly activated?

    Question do I have to do the same way you did. If I have a 2 sided brake switch already cause my truck came with cruise control 1986 C20 it came with a 3 speed auto? But I'm doing a ls swap 2007 lq4 dbw 6.0 4l80e trans

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Tommy. You can do that and I am actually going to be doing that soon to our own truck. We don't do it in the video, just to keep cruise and the trucks original brakes completely separate. Most swaps don't have an NO and a NC switch, so we thought this would help the larger majority get cruise. Thanks. Jerry

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think you are probably correct about the tune. You have some mismatched parts all together and I would think the ECM is probably not set up for what you have. I would try pulling the wire from the S position on your transmission connector. Should be a brown wire. That is the wire that grounds the torque converter solenoid to engage its clutch. With that wire undone, it definitely should not lock up the converter. If it does not lock up with that wire disconnected, I would check that wire with a ohmmeter and see exactly when the ecm is grounding that circuit. If it has ground always, I would check for a short to ground with that wire unplugged from the ECM connector 2, position 2. If the ECM is grounding it when you hit around that 5 mph mark, It would be a problem with the tune. This is an interesting one. I don't get a notification when you comment back, so you may want to start a new comment so I can make sure to see it. Jerry

    I was told I needed a brake switch added, by the transmission shop it’s a crammed ls1 4l60e in a 89 Silverado used to be the 350 tbi, do I need to add this setup to mine?

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on what your donor motor harness and ECM is. In this case a brake signal is not required for the torque converter to work. I talk about that a bit in the video. The ecm senses a few different things that will make the converter disengage. I have wired them with and without and really couldn't tell much difference. Thanks Chad. Let us know how it goes. Jerry

I think the only other thing I’ve had before this, I can hear a slight wine when I accelerate but I believe that’s because I forgot to check on my fluids and I was excessively low on the transmission but other than that it’s shifts fine.
