The familiarity you sense is likely Led Zeppelin .. they were widely criticized for being derivative of Zep (vocally and musically) .. but that shouldn't detract from this being an absolute banger. It was a *massive* hit. Sykes absolutely melts faces on this solo.

I was a huge thrash metal fan by 1987, so I'm hit or miss on much of the hair metal stuff (which Whitesnake got lumped into around this time). This is one of those songs with crossover appeal, along with the album in general. I've been a viewer since the earliest days as it pertains to your reactions, and though I value your honest opinions, this song is a killer, with absolutely no filler.

This song is a masterpiece! It isn't a hodgepodge of songs put together that were done better by someone else later, it was written this way probably for the video. The video was also killer and perfectly encapsulates the flamboyant times of hair metal on MTV in 1987. The pauses that occur in the first half of the song are part of the build up and probably helped for the scene changes on the video. After the building up, mid song there are a couple of crescendo moments and Ryan was talking over both of them, then it just rocks you for the rest of the song. This song sounds best to me when I'm listening while driving at night, especially after a hard days work. I can appreciate the honesty and would like to see more reactions that are honest, even negative. Some songs take a few listens to pick up on the flow. This song flows absolutely perfectly, unfortunately the band couldn't get their act together, they could have gone much, much farther.

      It's not personal.
I'm not going to rage about it.🙂
      It's only music.
At least they are being honest.
I have however realized that my opinions aren't really in the same ballpark as them the more that I watch their breakdowns.
I had initially thought they were moving towards a wider acceptance of different kinds of music but it seems that they are regressing back to their comfort zones.
They compare so many songs to R&B for example as if that is some kind of universal standard of excellence.

Enjoy many of your reviews. But I think you missed this one. Coverdale and Sykes nailed this song. Admittedly, they weren't breaking any new ground. Far from it, they were playing in the field cleared by Zeppelin. That's the familiarity you caught. But Coverdale was cut from the same cloth as Plant, with the same influences, so its not surprising they sound similar. After leaving Deep Purple, Coverdale started Whitesnake in the late 70s. They were primarily a blues based rock band. It wasn't until the 1987 album that Coverdale and Whitesnake made a concerted effort to win over the U.S market with a more MTV friendly look and sound. Years later, Coverdale and Jimmy Page paired up for an underrated album together.

This one was hard to take though, it's one of the songs that got 13-year-old me into rock music. I agree it's over-produced and a lot of otherwise good 80s music does have that "cheese" factor. It's probably the era that's hardest to judge objectively. Late 70s/early 80s Whitesnake might sound a bit more "authentic" if they ever get a second chance.

They need to listen to a lot more Led Zeppelin because those are the top tier, no different as far as game changers in music like Black Sabbath. They talk about Deep Purple a lot but still Zeppelin did more or at least equaled Deep Purple in the genre. The problem with reacting to old stuff, you don't get to experience it for what it was back then. So sure, it may well sound like a prototypical rock song now, but back in the day the majority of us were all over this and loved every brilliant second of it!

    • @metalmike570

Many of us also liked Led Zeppelin though and these guys gave Stairway To Heaven a bad reaction review. Of course that one has a slow buildup but you can't keep stopping the video to make a comment right before it's about to get faster or go into a change it kind of messes it up. That's what happened there and that's the same with this reaction.

progressive about it. It takes a little patience to appreciate classic and progressive rock and metal. These guys rated more Metallica and Megadeth just jumping right in but Whitesnake is different and so is Zeppelin. really they are hard rock bands, and for that foundation it's not just Aerosmith and Deep Purple. It's Led Zeppelin and they simply did not react to enough Zeppelin tunes. Zeppelin was a game changer and these guys missed it.

@metalmike570 I agree. I'm not hating on anyone, but rap and hip-hop is pretty basic and nowhere near the talent of rock and metal. I agree with some here that the "familiar sound" that you're hearing is most likely Led Zeppelin as the break in this song is VERY reminiscent of Black Dog. Not to mention the vocalist, David Coverdale (who incidentally recorded an album with the lead guitarist of Zeppelin, Jimmy Paige, in a project called "Coverdale and Paige"), was the vocalist for Deep Purple for a time and was helping shape the style of blues/hard rock for almost twenty years before this record. He is singing in the style he literally helped create.

Riff-wise, I think that this song was the next in line after Crazy Train to feature a killer riff in a hard rock song that stormed the airwaves. Still of the Night hit all the (generic) buttons of what was cool back in the mid-80s. It was over the top, but that's what those times were about ... especially when MTV still played music. This song captured that era. Judging it several decades later, outside of its proper context, it is easy to just call it overblown and dismiss it. This song drove the girls crazy (it had sex appeal) and you probably couldn't go into a guitar store without hearing some teen metal-dude trying to play it while checking out a new guitar. It was pretty much an instant classic... cheese and all. But you guys have every right not to care for it. It isn't the first time I have disagreed with one of your reviews and it won't be the last. Sykes is such an amazing guitarist. Vibrato as wide as the grand canyon, blazing speed, and an instantly recognizable sound. But the band that recorded this isn't the touring band. The band that Dave put together for this tour was supposedly his dream band of all heavy hitters. I saw them on this tour twice and they were phenomenal. I also saw them on the follow up tour with Steve Vai and that too was amazing.
Hey, you guys should check out and possibly do a reaction video of Steve Vai's "Teeth of the Hydra". But you would need to watch the video to do the reaction. His hydra guitar is triple-necked, with a half fretless 12 string, a 7 string with a tremelo, a half fretless bass, and 13 sympathetically resonating harp strings, and additionally some crazy onboard effects....and he plays the whole damn thing at once. It's SICK! Check it out at least.

I completely understand how you feel. If it's not your flavor, it's not your flavor. Especially at your current ages. This song came out in 1987. I loved the song at the time. I was almost 20, and fairly immature. So this was the shit for most everyone who liked rock back then. It's more nostalgic to me now. Not in my Playlist but would let it play if it comes on the radio. Brings back memories of the time more than love for the song. Keep up the reactions. I'm ready for more.

Lol! You guys go too deep sometimes... You had to live these songs as they came out. As I tell my kids they get to cherry pick decades of music and just move on too quickly. But nonetheless, great video boys!

Yes! This is a good example of a very successful 80’s hard rock /radio metal song that is so cheesy bad in retrospect. Meanwhile AlterBridge just keep making high quality hard rock/ melodic metal for the past 20 years with meaningful lyrics - and they are relatively u/k to the masses unfortunately…
I’m so happy to have discovered them personally by means other than radio (I am a mid 50’s yr old rock and metal fan). AB blew my mind!

I got into Whitesnake BEFORE Led Zeppelin. I know, I know. A product of hair metal bands in my day. Zeppelin is obviously the superior band, but now that I know Zep very well, I definitely hear some similarities. Nice.

For these guys they should listen to Slide It In, title track off of another Whitesnake song. It's simpler so I think they would like it!! It really rocks though.
