  • In this video, we compare the features & performance of the Hyperkin RetroN 3 HD to the Retro-Bit Super Retro Trio 3+.
Ford v Chevy. Yankees v Red Sox. Sega vs. Nintendo. We always love to compare similar things side by side, each f&om championing their cause. Video gamers are clearly no different, we've taken sides for decades. Two of the heavyweights in clone consoles, Retro-Bit & Hyperkin, both having three in one HDMI video game solutions, it was time for us to compare them side-by-side.
In this corner, we have the Retro-Bit Super Retro Trio 3+ (SRT3+). Released in 2018, this was one of the first 3-in-1 HDMI equipped clone systems. & in this corner, we have a newcomer, the Hyperkin RetroN 3 HD. Released in early 2020, newer hardware may give it a decided advantage. But will it? That's what we're here to test out.
One major advantage the RetroN 3 HD has is a 4:3 & 16:9 aspect ratio switch, which the SRT3+ completely lacks. That would be fine if the SRT3+ plus display natively in 4:3, but it displays natively in 16:9. If you have a television that can switch aspect ratios, this isn't much of a problem. But if you are streaming content or your TV lacks this functionality, you are locked into 16:9.
Another advantage that the RetroN 3 HD has is games compatibility. I have had several PAL games, most notably Yoshi's Island, not play on the SRT3+ but play just fine on the RetroN 3 HD. Also, the RetroN 3 HD will play Virtua Racing, which the SRT3+ will not. One gameplay advantage that the SRT 3 + has however is the fact that it can play Master System ROMs off of an Everdrive at the correct 60Hz, where the RetroN 3 HD requires you to put it in PAL mode, which is slower.
Both systems include two controllers, Retro-Bit includes their own OEM controller, while Hyperkin includes a Scouts & Squire controller. While I prefer the Hyperkin controllers, you cannot play NES games on the system out of the box with them. You will need to purchase a separate controller to play the NES titles. The Retro bit controllers are still nice, & you can play every system using them. That gives an advantage to the SRT3+.
When it comes to gameplay, the NES side has the biggest differences between both systems. I'm just not a fan of how Hyperkin treats the NES palette & sound. The palate is dark & muddy, & the reverse duty cycle audio issues are more pronounced. The audio is still incorrect on the Retro-Bit system, but I don't think it is nearly as bad. I also think the color palette is vastly superior. On the NES & Genesis side, performance is much closer. One thing I will say is while playing I thought the Hyperkin audio was softer, but in editing it was actually considerably louder on the raw capture.
    Strengths:
    Retro-Bit
    - Superior color palette
    - better audio quality for NES
    - no need to buy separate controller to play all systems
    - plays Master System ROMs at the proper speed
    Hyperkin
    - Superior games compatibility
    - the included controllers are exceptional
    - the look of the system is nicer
    - 4:3/16:9 switch
    Weaknesses
    Retro-Bit
    - no 4:3 option is a killer
    - PAL switch doesn't actually seem to change the clock speed
    - does not play all PAL games or Virtual Racing
    Hyperkin
    - need to buy separate controller to play NES games out of the box
    - audio & color PALettes on the NES side needs improvement
    - Genesis pins are still quite tight
    The winner
For many, the lack of 4:3 disqualifies the SRT3+ right away, & I totally get it. If 4:3 is the most important thing to you, then your answer is simple, get the RetroN 3 HD. Same thing if being able to play Virtual Racing & certain PAL games are important to you, the Hyperkin is going to be the way to go. Based on the way I awarded points, the SRT3+ actually doubled how many categories it won for me. The color palette & audio on the NES side is a lot better in my opinion on the Retro-Bit over the Hyperkin. The fact that you can play NES games out of the box with the included controller on the Retro-Bit is a big factor as well. & the fact that it plays Master System ROMs at the correct clock speed gives it an advantage too.

Very well made video. I definitely see where your coming from with your reasons. This is my thoughts going by what I've seen and heard plus some experience with separate clones.
For the device it's self I give an edge to the Hyperkin. Having 4:3 is a very big deal to me so that gives the Retron 3 HD a big benefit. I also prefer the Retron 3 HD power switch as with the SRT 3+ you end up powering systems you don't want to play for a very short time. Doing this has been known to delete save files so is generally not a good thing. The Retron 3 HD avoids this issue.
The SRT 3+ does however have a much better set up for controllers.
So far 1-0 to Retron 3 HD.
NES is honestly a hard one. Sounds and colour is definitely better on the SRT 3+ but not having PAL clockspeed as an option is poor. Overall I have to give it to the SRT 3+
    Now it's 1-1
SNES is an easy win to the Retron 3 HD. Having PAL support is a big deal I think and although colors are not quite as good it's very close. The better compatibility is enough to make the Retron 3 HD the easy winner.
    2-1 to Retron 3 HD.
Genesis is so hard to pick. The SRT 3+ has better colors but has less compatibility since it doesn't play Virtual Racing. The Retron has to be PAL for Master System games though so overall it's a slight edge to the SRT 3+.
    Interesting it's 2-2.
Controller wise I don't think I can pick. The Retron controllers seem way better but not being able to play NES out the box sucks. For me personally it has to be a tie.
3-3. So basically it just depends on what matters to you. For me the Retron 3 HD is the better choice but it's very close.

Hi Gary, thanks for your thorough analysis. I was looking for a new NES / SNES clone to replace my GamerzTek HD-2 system that just started having HDMI issues, and this helped me to decide on the Hyperkin console featured here. Though I ended up buying the one that "lost", I do appreciate the detail you went into and the fact that you pointed out the reasons one may favor one over the other. Great work as usual. Keep up the good work!

It was my favorite clone system until it started not throwing a signal via HDMI. At first it was occasional. Turning the TV or system off and back on would usually fix the issue. I thought it was just my old TV at first. Now it's gotten to the point where MAYBE if I'm lucky I can turn it off and on or unplug / re-plug HDMI or power it might work. I've tested on 2 newer TV's and get the same result. I haven't contacted anyone because I bought the thing over 2 years ago (after watching your "Should you buy" video on it), and I seriously doubt they would do anything for me at this point. It really was a great system that got plenty of good use, and I don't regret buying it. Now I'm going to try using it on a CRT TV with composite cables.

Nice review Gary! I have a SupaRetron HD and really like it for my SNES. It isn't perfect but it works great on my HD TV for my SNES games that I don't want to have any noticeable lag on. Final Fantasy 3 has a weird blur effect if your curious. I used to use a RetroTrio, but I did have some issues with NES as well. These systems work great for the most part, but being a kid in the 80's I wanted a better NES. I bought an AVS for that :) I couldn't take the terrible sound and/or the wrong colors.
As for the 16 bit clone parts of those systems, I really like the Hyperkin products for the game compatibility, but the Retrobit products tend to look and sound better with a big plus on the way they managing the controller ports. It's way less wires to mess with on the Retrobit Trio.
All in all, if somebody has a bunch of US games, clone carts, and homebrews, and wants to play the cartridges on an HD TV I would go with either one. I know for sure the RetroTrio works with the older Everdrive for Snes and Genesis Everdrive. I used a cheap Chinese Snes and Genesis everdrive on my RetroTrio since I don't want to use my carts anymore. I didn't have any issues what so ever. Even most of the homebrew games worked on the everdrives as well.
    Take care Gary :)

Bought a SRT3+ based on this video, and I love it. Two things I want to touch on that you didn't mention though (I didn't take the time to read previous comments so it may have already been said) color pallette does look better, and nicer on the SRT3+, BUT compared to the original hardware it's still slightly darker, at least on SNES. For NES it looks like there is an antialiasing filter on. Not a big deal to me but it's there.
Also for the Genesis cartridge port, you gotta be careful with how you remove the cartridge. Pull one one side, not the dead center and you're fine, otherwise there will be a death grip.

    • @RoXolid
      @RoXolid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I got the Super Retro Trio 3+ first, then a Retron 3 HD. I loved the Retro Trio until I got the Retron 3, and I started enjoy using the Retron 3 instead... for a while.
Last night, as of when I wrote this comment, Dragon Warrior on the NES worked great, just some colors were oversaturated and the audio is off (the audio is also off on the Retro Trio as well, but on both, it's not intolerable). But I could play in the original aspect ratio for better accuracy. But today, my Dragon Warrior cartridge no longer starts up in the Retron 3. Blank black screen. I tried other games, and they DO work, but Dragon Warrior just stopped working on the Retron 3. SNES and Genesis games still work, but Dragon Warrior stopped working. Super Mario Bros. 1/Duck Hunt also wont start up.
I then put the games that wont work on the Retron 3 into my Super Retro Trio, and they work fine. *So, for some reason, the Retron 3 just randomly decides it doesn't ever want to run certain games anymore* and it's pissing me off. *I switch my vote back to the Super Retro Trio.* I can't play games in their original aspect ratio by using the Retro Trio, but at least my fucking games work on it.

Retro bit trio 3+, retrotinx 2x pro, or pound HDMI cable for Sega and SNES? I have a lot of games for SNES, Sega and NES I'm curious on your thoughts. They All seem like good products don't think pound has a nes cable though. I'm pretty interested in the retrotink but SNES and Sega component cables are a bit pricey.

@@mattbliven5345 The Pound cables are more for convenience, not for quality so there's that. About the dark colors on Retron 3 HD, could it be HDMI range (sometimes called HDMI black level) mismatch? You can change this in the TV settings. It should auto detect but sometimes it does not work and you have to match them manually at the source (if available) and/or the TV. Anyway, depending which way around it is wrong the result is either super contrasty image with very dark darks (and crushed black details) and blown out white details OR if the mismatch is other way around then the result is washed out image with dark grey blacks and dirty whites.

Yes Double Dragon 5 The Shadow Falls is based off the Saturday morning cartoon in the 90’s. As a kid I really liked it but was weird that it had its own version of fatalities. Kinda weird to see your favorite cartoon at the time doing hidden fatalities! I believe if you use the L trigger, on Billy Lee as his health is dangerously low, he yells out and falls to his knees as a skeleton. Certain moves from each character would trigger their fatality. Hope it helps!

How is the input latency vs software emulation? I've had the retron 5, and have a retropie now, also have tried all sorts of emulators on PC and Android. In almost all cases the latency is noticeable without doing all kinds of tweaks that are either not available or not feasible on lower end devices like the pi or Retron 5.

@@RoXolid ive had 4 nes clones 2 retrobit res units one hyperkin unit one old skool/ classique the retro bit units played great the colors being off werent an issue for me (i grew up playing nes on a13 in. B&W tv.) but both retrobit units failed because of the pin connectors becoming loose and mishapen (cheap metal i guess) while the controllers never completely failed the silicone bumpers/spring pad got noticeably softer in less than 5 hours of use so the retrobit units were replaced with a hyperkin unit which at the same time was the exact same internals and controllers as the retrobit and identical controllers
I still have the hyperkin unit but with it i did things differently when i recieved it
I plugged a gamegenie into it and only change games by plugging and unplugging

I never used them i used an original nes controller and one sansui joycard controller (its a vintage aftermarket turbo controller with turbo and autofire as well as a head phone plug)

Because of circumstances that i dont discuss on youtube my fiance and i dont live togther i did by another nes clone that is the old skool (iknow the proper spelling school but the company spells with a k) this system was said to be really good well it uses the same garbage pin connector which i suspected but bought it anyway eventhough it was more than double the cost of a hyperkin or retrobit unit
Hyperkin and retrobit av out units at the time were 20 dollars the old skool unit at the time was 45 dollars i paid the 45 dollars because the controllers were said to be better than anything else coming out of china
For me this was not the case both controllers were defective out of the box
The character will stop moving while the d pad is pressed and wont move untill the button is released and pressed again the pad central pivot is actually good on these controllers
However the silicone bumpers/spring pad on these controllers are the same weak silicone composition as all the other chinese controllers
It was mentioned in several videos that graphical glitches were a nuiscance with this unit this was not the case for me maybe old skool fixed that issue or maybe its because my games are actually clean
All the above mentioned is my reasoning for wondering about the quality of construction of the trio units they gone up in price and im not sure if theyre worth picking up

He didn't have a gameboy growing up, but now he does and I thought it'd be a cool thing to blow his mind with especially since he could trade or battle that way and so far it seems like hyperkin is unfortunately omitting link cable support...

I want a multi console for my son as he isnt old enough to deal with the emulators on my computer by him self. Im not a collector either. The biggest reason I want a multi console is so I can use multi game carts. Is the compatibility generally okay? I would love your opinion. 32:31 There was no region lock on SMS and I don't think any games were optimized for PAL at all. As for the arifacting that looks like that is in the overscan region that would not be seen on a CRT. HDTVs tend to show extraneous picture that would've been cropped on a CRT. SMS had an odd ratio anyhow, so those games are letterboxed even on a CRT, so it may show there too.

RoXolid Productions that’s correct. SMS doesn’t have a region lock unless you count the physical pin differences between SMS and M3. I’m unaware of any PAL games that actually require 50 Hz to run. I’ve owned plenty of PAL games for SMS. There was no difference. There may be a small percentage. I never encountered any. I actually have a modded PAL SMS and the 60 Hz / 50 Hz Switch has been useless for me.

    Some points you missed:
-The region switch on the SRT+ is only for the Genesis side. The NES/SNES side is locked to NTSC. That is why there is a separate PAL-version SRT+ sold in Europe.
-The SRT+ outputs in mono only for SNES/Genesis. There is no stereo separation. The Retron 3 HD does have true stereo for SNES/Genesis. This is noticeable when you use a pair of headphones with your tv.
-The SRT+ has bad audio on the SNES side. It sound very harsh when compared to the Retron 3 HD or original SNES. Also it's in mono only as mentioned before.
-The SRT+ only plays SNES and Genesis Everdrives. It does not work with NES Everdrives. The Retron 3 HD works with all 3 Everdrives.
-The Retron 3 HD has better build quality and thicker plastic. The plastic on the SRT+ flexes when you squeeze it, especially the space between the cartridge slots.
-The Retron 3 HD has better quality cartridge slot pins and is easier to plug/pull cartridges.
I sold my SRT+ awhile ago due to the audio issues and just got the Retron 3 HD. I have also ordered the new version SRT+ Galaxy Edition to see if there are any differences.

I own a Retro-Bit Super Retro Trio 3+ system & an AVS too! I'm more than satisfied to have these 2 specific consoles to my video game console collection. I don't own a Hyperkin Retron 3 HD, nor do I want to after watching some videos, like this one on TH-cam. The BASE in the sounds for the Retron 3 HD ARE good, BUT, Visuals always stand out more than just sound. That being said, the Retron 3 HD simply Sucks. Sure, the sound effects in music & itself are swapped (Especially Noticeable in Super Mario Bros. 1 to 3 & Pac-Man!) for these 2 & the Gamerz-Tek console, but again, like I've said before, the Retron 3 HD's visuals flat out SUCKS!
