Nice to see that this is better than the Retron HD. I’m on my second HD as the power socket broke on my first one. The HD isn’t great but it is an easy way for me to be able to play the PAL carts in my collection. I have worries about Hyperkin’s quality control though. I’ve one one Retron HD and one hyperkin joypad stop working. The other issue with the Supa is that Super Famicoms are incredibly cheap and you can easily get super clean RGB output out of them. Why get a clone when an original is cheaper?
I bought one of these this summer. It worked fine, for awhile at least. When I went back and put in a new cartridge I kept getting black screens. Either it was something with the system or it was because I never used the eject button... and before anyone asked I did clean the cartridges
All the eject button does is force a plastic wedge to the bottom of the cart to force it out of the death grip. You're just describing Hyperkin hardware in general though; works okay for a while, then doesn't
The Retron 2 HD is available from Hyperkin Labs. I have one coming in the mail. Wanted to let you know and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it in the future. Cheers!

Really good video. Very informative. Thank you. This system looks really good to me. I really like the vivid colours. I'm a PAL user mainly so for me the affordable options are the Supa Retron HD and the Super Retro Trio Plus. I do have the Retron HD which I overall like so I'm just now sure what I should pick up out of the 2. I do own an original NES and SNES of which my SNES is RGB with a CRT television although a small one. The fact you get Genesis is cool too though as I own some Mega Drive games. However having to change the picture to 4:3 is annoying as for me it would mean having to set it everytime I turn a game on. I do rather like how Hyperkin gives you the option. I know FPGA based systems would be the most ideal but they are just too much money for me.
It is a hard choice for sure. There is the RetroGen HD coming from Hyperkin as well. If your TV doesn't have a 4:3/16:9 mode it can make the video aspect ratio...offputting
RoXolid Productions It is indeed. My TV does have the option but each time you turn the system off it loses the setting so you have to do it again after changing game. Like you I really dislike 16:9 for retro games. The thing that appeals abouts the Retron as well is the scout controllers as I did get the wireless one which feels amazing and works very well. I didn't get the issues you got.
RoXolid Productions It is. I think the Supa Retron might be the system for me. The aspect ratio and more vivid colours and great controllers sell it to me I think. Plus as I said I've got a HD NES and might get Hyperkins Genesis system when it's out.
I needed pal compatibility also and purchased the retro trio, the SNES audio was horribly distorted and painful to listen to, so I returned it. I'm now waiting for a supa retron to arrive. I'm more into the NES than the SNES so don't want to invest in an NT.

The best way to use the Suparetron is via a high end CRT and the AV plugs. It will look almost indistinguishable from a real SNES. The HD option makes it look really pixely and not as good
No thanks on the CRT. And to be honest, if you're going to play on a CRT then get an original SNES and use HD Retro Bit Component Video Cables and be prepared to be blown away! Component is so much better than Composite!
Almost. RetroTink 2x if you're budget-conscious, 5x if price is no object, but use HD Retovision Cables. That's how I have mine going and it's beautiful
Looks surprisingly good for a cheap Chinese SNES clone. It seems quite a bit of progress has been made in the Chinese SNES-on-a-Chip implementations, judging from the good compatibility. Seeing SMRPG working is awesome. The video side of things have also made progress, it seems, as this doesn't look like just a cheap composite-to-HDMI converter having been added to the video output, but something a bit more sophisticated. However, it looks like 240p content is still processed as 480i, which is a deal-breaker. This flaw is quite apparent when the player's character takes damage in Super Castlevania IV. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, it looks like no Chinese clone console to date has ever processed 240p content correctly, and it looks like the manufacturers don't really care to fix this.
Ok, weird thought and I could be off base but just thinking... So does your TV have like an AI upscaling feature? My one Vizio does, and that may be causing the issue. Not sure, just thinking while typing
I just wondered if changing tv settings like sharpness, or even messing with color may be the key to making these cheaper alternatives look better. I have watched a few reviews on these clone consoles and no one seems to check and see if maybe adjusting picture settings on the tv itself. Plug, Play, TH-cam review. Not saying anything negative about you or your review. I am glad I found your review.
I completely understand where you're coming from. There's a reason I do my unboxing and then a few days later I do the review. I figure the unboxing gives people the tech specs and everything and if they just want to see what it comes with that videos for them. On the flip side the review video generally I've played with the system for a couple of days and I've been able to get a good impression of its capabilities. Coming out of the system into my capture device however that eliminates the TV from the equation altogether so you are getting a true pure output from the system to get an idea of its capabilities. Can you play around with the settings to change things, absolutely. Do most people want to? Not really. Most people don't even want to calibrate their new flat panel TVs when they first install them
Spoiler: There's really nasty pixel jitter, even in Gameboy games like Tetris, wherever there's motion, a bad side-effect of a lot of these clone systems. If you're half blind or EVERYTHING shakes in your vision, you can probably get over it for the price. Everything else about it's a solid 3/5 which is what I'd expect for $60.
RoXolid Productions well, Analogue got it right with the Super Nt. How hard can it be? I mean, if you want something that works correctly, I guess you have to pay more money.
+LelandHasGames Well it falls under you get what you pay for. If you want a budget system you're going to get budget system results. If you want to Pro level system you're going to get Pro level results, but you're also going to get a pro-level price tag.
+Hermes Canuto I'm hoping to do a lot of recording tomorrow and this is one I want to have filmed. They are edit-intensive for obvious reasons but hoping next week, if not early the week of the 19th
Still on the to-do list. I haven't been able to get back to the production schedule I need since getting back from Germany, this project keeps dragging on. It's coming, trust me.
I think that perspective is the cancer of retro gaming. Look at it this way, you have someone who finds their old collection of NES games in their parents attic as they get ready to move. Their reaction? "These are cool, I forgot I had these, I wonder if they still work?". They plug in their old NES to their modern TV and it looks and sounds terrible. Frustrated there are two likely paths they go down: 1) Looking for better options and find, hey, there's an HDMI-equipped system I can hook up that will look cleaner than my old NES, it will actually play the games instead of giving me a blinking light error and look decent. OH, and it is only $25-$40? That's pretty cool! Wait, there are these other systems that will even play SNES & Genesis carts? You know I never got into the Genesis but this would give me an opportunity. A year or two later this person has 120 games in his or her collection, has attended a swap or two and even upgraded their equipment to an Analogue Super NT and handed their "cheap clone system" down to their kid to use for casual enjoyment to keep growing the retro fan base. 2) Puts the system in the box, sells it in a garage sale, Craigslist, Facebook or donates to Goodwill and never gets back into retro gaming. I'll tell you path 1 really describes a lot of how I got back into it. My ex had her NES, we hooked it up and it looked like hot garbage. I did some research and bought my first clone in 2015, a Retron 5. With that my interest grew and grew and now I have a ton of original systems (Famicom, Sharp Famicom Twin, NES, SNES, Super Famicom, N64, Spice Orange Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, even a Model 1 Genesis) and games that I never would have gotten if I never bought one of those "cheap clone systems". As long as people are having fun does it really matter what they are playing on if it suits their needs? Just a different perspective to consider.

Not really. Most people don't even want to calibrate their new flat panel TVs when they first install them
I have a issue with it it won't play Bruce Lee dragon story or battle toad double dragon why
Good video, maybe do some sound adjustments to make the voice more pleasant. Maybe hire a different host?
Tried that, no one wants to work with the jerk of a cameraman or producer who has no vision.
Does this play everdrive cartridge
Not sure, I think so but I don't own any. My grilling is if you're going to use an EverDrive with a clone just go with a Retropie
all it needs is the english translated njpw game
It's odd how Hyperkin can never seem to get the colors quite right.
And yet unofficial emulators like Snes9x and Higan can, and those are free >.>
+LelandHasGames It's not just Hyperkin but I get what you're saying
+the_randomizer Software vs hardware emulation, it does make a difference
RoXolid Productions well, Analogue got it right with the Super Nt. How hard can it be? I mean, if you want something that works correctly, I guess you have to pay more money.
+LelandHasGames Well it falls under you get what you pay for. If you want a budget system you're going to get budget system results. If you want to Pro level system you're going to get Pro level results, but you're also going to get a pro-level price tag.
Does DOOM work good on it?
I don't own it to test, sorry
@@RoXolid How about other Super FX games?
They work but have similar audio and color issues as pointed out here
For me, the gamerz tek 16bit is better!
That comparison video is coming!
RoXolid Productions , I realy wanna see the next video
+Hermes Canuto I'm hoping to do a lot of recording tomorrow and this is one I want to have filmed. They are edit-intensive for obvious reasons but hoping next week, if not early the week of the 19th
Any news for the GamerzTek vs SuparetronHD ?
Still on the to-do list. I haven't been able to get back to the production schedule I need since getting back from Germany, this project keeps dragging on. It's coming, trust me.
japan games i need you!!!!
There's a lot of cool Japanese games!
Nice console🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Thanks as always John!
Why can't these clone console makers replicate 30 year old technology? It's never as good as actually playing the games on a real SNES console.
I get that, but they're also balancing accuracy vs cost. You CAN get a spot-on HDMI-clone. It's going to cost you $180+ but it is possible.
Retro Bit > Hyperkin
Retro Bit is oofy shite
cheap clone systems are the cancer of retro gaming
I think that perspective is the cancer of retro gaming. Look at it this way, you have someone who finds their old collection of NES games in their parents attic as they get ready to move. Their reaction? "These are cool, I forgot I had these, I wonder if they still work?". They plug in their old NES to their modern TV and it looks and sounds terrible. Frustrated there are two likely paths they go down:
1) Looking for better options and find, hey, there's an HDMI-equipped system I can hook up that will look cleaner than my old NES, it will actually play the games instead of giving me a blinking light error and look decent.
