    Something that I've noticed a lot with 1910-1912 hats is that they always seem too big because they're meant to be worn over really big hair

    • @crowznest438
      @crowznest438 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Exactly. It would have fit fine with an early 20th c. hair style made with "rats" poofing out the sides, those things made with hair collected in a special hair cup, collecting hair off a brush and used in holding out that big hair.

      2:04 shows a model. The hair is huge and the hat sits even „above the head“. Styled like that the size is completely logical.

    You should do more of these, it can be it's own series "Mastering the Mystery"! I've always wanted to see you re-do some of the patterns once you have all of the information.

    Hats will be bigger because of the Gibson hair style that was sooo popular in 1912. But I love this hat!

  • @Tatsuemin
    @Tatsuemin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    About the slit thing, when they say to turn and work I guess it is to create a place to insert the quills, and then when they say to work the "space" is when you join the brim again to work the rest of the brim, letting the split open. It is like creating a buttonhole but for inserting the embellishments. I'm not sure if it makes sense but it is kind of what I envisioned while you were reading it. This way they could put the embellishment bottom points and secure it inside the hat and even change it if they wanted to without damaging the hat itself.
    Stellar job as always!
    EDIT: The hairstyling back then was different so the hat would kinda stay at the top of the hair "pile". After watching Bernadette Banner and Rachel Maksy for years I know well that they really loved the puffy hair bun style in the early 1900s and before. Both have videos styling their hair to look like that if you want to give a look on how they used to style hair back then.

    I think the round of SC without joining, followed by two rounds of SC in continuous rounds would just make a hole; not a split. The hole might be where you shove the feathers in and THIS would be the 'left side of the hat' according to the picture.

    Corinna, this hat is so darn cute! Glad you nailed it. I recently sewed a Russian army hat from a hand drawn pattern, no instructions. It was too big, so I just wore a beanie and the hat. It’s so warm and my favourite hat because it’s so different.

    I liked this! (I just LOVE those emu feathers with that scarf!) If you take the feathers and "ground" them like you would a tapestry or sewing needle (weave the quill end in and out of one or two stitches) they will stay in place better. I also agree with everyone else, here, that women of the time would either supplement with "rats" (like those "donuts" you buy for dance or ballet to wrap the ponytail hair around) or buy human hairpieces (think extensions) if they didn't have the cooperation of their own hair, or had to have it cut for some reason.

    Use your feathers as a hat pin when you wear it with a wig (?) because they had a bun or teased hair during “that” time . I think it’s beautiful !!!❤️❤️❤️

    I made one that fits with 2 balls of Yarn Bee Super Bulky anti pill and a 7mm hook. I left off round 5 and added it back as a normal round 11. In addition, I reduced two stitches each in rounds 9 &10. It took three tries before I realized that the size of hook used to make the one in the photo was probably lost to time, and that gap between K and L is where it probably was. Thankfully we have Amazon these days and I just ordered my 7mm from there. It came today and I was really excited to finally get this hat that I went straight to it after work.

    You are just so stinkin' cute! You worked so hard on that hat! You do things so much like I do, count like I do etc.
    I often go rogue myself, out of necessity cuz some patterns are just weird. 😊 you make me laugh too, you have such a great personality and are so fun. I enjoy your channel and the vintage projects immensely. This hat you made is a super cute! ❤ My suggestion for further reference, or better fit, is to crochet less rounds for the crown of the hat, this will make the walls of the hat smaller and better fitting for the head. If you try it again someday that may help make it fit much better on your head. God bless!

    I was giggling at row 15. I wanted to call the stitches Cluster Bombs. Not because of you but it's that pattern! I wanted to make this and decrease by a row at the top, just so it wouldn't be halfway down my eyes (which it would!), but I think I will pass on it. I seriously thought about it, but I have a weird shaped head so I am picky about my hats. I love them, they just don't all love me. LOL. This was so fun to watch! Funnily enough, I have this yarn in a rust color. It looked pretty cute on you, but everything looks cute on you! Yes, you redeemed yourself, lol. Actually, that pattern was a pain in the patootie was it not?! I certainly don't have floofy hair like that! I wonder how many women actually made this hat back in 1912? Can't wait for your next video, this was so fun!!! PS I see other comments about the video frame rate, I didn't notice a difference, it was great! PPS I thought your version was definitely an improvement on the original btw! ❤❤❤

    I like the hat. You did good!
    Name the stitch... SC2Tog same SC2Tog Next Stitch.
    The back and forth leaving the gap and then closing that gap seems likena space for the quills and to attach the black band. Just a thought. Good job!🙂❤️🧶

  • @nikolaiadrigov
    @nikolaiadrigov 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I think the skip first stich in left side of hat instruction, and talking about first and second space have to do with the split made when you work back and forth with with single crochet. If someone else does this pattern it might be worth trying that way if they want to try and work the pattern as written.
    But as I've said before I think that seeing how to improvise and make things work is a good skill to have and that the outcome, and being happy with it, is more important than following the pattern strictly word for word.
    I think you did a great job, as always! Thank you for taking the time to revisit this pattern!

    The Gibson Girl hairstyle of the era was piled loosely on top with lots of waves, intended to make a luxurious and soft poof. The hat would e been large enough to sit on top and not take away from the poof but rather add to it!!

    This hat is SOOO cute! After several times watching your video thru I decided to try making the hat. I dont think I care for this pattern, not your fault, it just was not a well written pattern. Trying to follow and make the stitches exact, was not easy for me personally. So I'm ripping my work out and restarting, going "vogue" all the way. 😊❤
    Just going to look at the picture you showed for the vintage pattern and make it from that, easier for me. You did great working with that old pattern. You always do...thank you. Blessings.

    The original was probably sarched out to heck and back to keep the shape. It may have even had a felted or cardboard flat disk in the top or around the head to help hold that stiff side straight and vertical and the straight flat top shape. Women back then would have known to starch it a lot and to put in some type of shape supports without being told in a pattern because stiff like that was so standard. Some beautiful and decorative hat pins would have been used as well to hold that sucker in place.

    I remember my Gammy talking about how all the girls in school had big thick braids down past their tushes. I would think, winding all that braid up onto your head might require an oversized hat such as this. Whereas our hair contemporary hair fashions are much less bulky and weighty, so require a more snug style. SO cute, though!

    ...and as always, you made it better by making it your own. Great job! Also as always, given that this is the "naughty" pattern, when you asked us to come up with a name for the second type of cluster, I immediately thought of a compound word that begins with "cluster," but ends in a four-letter word that rhymes with "truck" (let the reader understand). It's naughty, don't you agree? Looking forward to the next video!
