It is a given, in my experience. I'm 63, learned from my Maw-maw who had stacks of old Needlecraft and Workbasket magazines. If you were doing a shoe from the patterns that were in the early part of the 1900s you made your own soles. I remember being told that they used to sell pre-made leather soles in various sizes with the stitching holes pre-punched along the outsides in what my Maw-maw called the General Store, where you went to buy dry goods. These later morphed into 5&10 cent stores like Mott's, Anthony's, and TG&Y. I still have my leather punch and I keep a supply of leather from Tandy Corp. to use as shoe soles. All the information you never needed, lol.

Same here, I'm a bit older than you but I remember my grandma buying slipper soles at Ben Franklin's on the West Coast as late as the early 60s. They carried craft items that were long outdated by popular culture but were still used by the older ladies. Soles were still available into the 70s and yes they were pre-punched.

I remember Granny going to the old Woolworth store and she said they used to have to go to the mercantile store. She made ùs girls pairs of these. I loved mine and wore them till they fell off my feet. I wish I could make me a pair once again.

I just gave away all my work baskets that my Grandma gave me. I am 67. My grandma would crochet thick soles.

I'm 62 and my grandmother made all of us kids these types of slippers for Christmas. Her local store had all kinds of stuff for slippers. I loved to go there with her to get her supplies. She never bought anything pre-made, it was always handmade, even down to all the underwear, bras, nightgowns, pj's, socks, etc. It was great!

Almost immediately I was telling my tv "they're slippers they're slippers" . LOL It isn't like you could've heard me. Then when you cut your yarn I yelled "NOOO" and 4 of my 7 dogs started barking at the tv with me. 😂 😊

U did it right!! I was shouting at the tv! Im from the shoe making centre of the uk it must be part of living here, being able to see the shoe!, i can see the bit u made first is the front of the shoe, the strap bit goes around the back of the foot and joins back to the bit you crocheted first. Look at the picture, you can see the seam they sewed. When u cut that bit off a part of me went "noooooo!" 😂😂 i cant see any sole in the pattern, you just crocheted the upper!❤

For some reason the parts of unfinished shoe uppers look absolutely nothing like the finished object, let alone something you'd wear. Having the sole, or instructions to make them, would have helped (use the heavier yarn to make the soles). I've also seen some slipper patterns (I don't remember what yarn company had them) where you attach the upper to a flip flop/ shower shoe sole.

Flat edge is the base of the slipper form. Imagine wrapping it around your foot. The triangular part covers the toe and the wave part is the heel of the form. You did great.

Mystery crochet "sit-down comedy" to the max. Before you got the full pattern, I laughed but I've looked at patterns just like you did, but I had the WHOLE pattern with pictures. You win the academy award for this category!!
I can see the purchased sole being a given in that one.
No such a thing as a "fail" , the bra cup is excellent!
All prizes to anyone who has the patience to work on that "mystery".... you rock!! 💃🏻💃🏻🩰🩰💃🏻💃🏻

This pattern is almost identical to the slippers I made years ago. You started perfectly. The point you messed up at is when you cut your yarn.
The narrow end was the toes. The flat edge would've ended up forming your heel. Row 4 was all around. 5th row was 11 sc (misprint was skip 1 on both sides of increase). Over time that forms the curve for your toes. I wish I had a picture of my slippers. My daughter has then I'll see if she'll take a pic for me to share. Mine doesn't have the frills. But they are nearly identical.

    • @ellbow7287

Yeah when Carina only did half the row on row 4 that's when she got into strife. She should have stuck with the first attempt.😅

You did it right! So close. The part you thought was the heel was infact the heel. the front part you lay like a dome, and the back part attaches to the arched portion of the slipper so it matches the other side. Love these videos! Love seeing something besides a coaster, even though are fun too.

This was a definite win! You crocheted it perfectly ! It's the construction you had trouble with ... imagine the upper ( item you crocheted) wrapping around a flat sole and walla you have your slipper! Great job. I love your channel ❤️

I LOVED this one. I was with you on the first attempt (the bra cup) and thought you were doing it right. I think your second attempt was the right one. You just couldn't figure out how to wrap the back of the slipper back to the front and attach. My favorites are when what you are doing exactly what the pattern says but you end up with something crazy. I really liked this one because you started over and got something totally different.

I am pretty new at crochet and I absolutely adore vintage and 19th-century garments and accessories, so I have tried following several patterns from these old books, but they are always so perplexing, and I have always blamed myself for it. Seeing a person who is so good at crochet struggle to understand the pattern and try to break it apart logically piece by piece, the way I do every time, made it seem so pure and fun, this struggle to understand crochet patterns and reminded me that even getting confused and not being able to get the final product can be such a great time spent. Thank you for the video and you are truly a champion for figuring something out of this pattern! Thank you again for the wonderful video and best of luck in everything!

You did it right! you are supposed to join the back (heel) to the front. You fold it exactly in half. Yes, you will need to add a sole. It's really pretty! I would like to make it! I was like, OH NO DON"T CUT IT! lol

It wasn't a fail!! You did it right I believe. I think you were just overthinking the placement of the attachment. The flat edge needs to stay at the bottom so you could attach a sole!! I can't see any way that you could have gotten this one, even with a picture! The pattern would have needed to list a set of soles in the materials, as well as noting things like "this is the tip of the toe", "this is the heel", "sew slipper to sole". You get an A+++ for this one! And it sounds like Justin is a bit of a sadistic imp - just like my son! Thank you for an entertaining interlude!

You're brave to just read and try. I always translate / re-write the pattern into a separate sheet of paper and if I encounter problems out comes the grid paper and the crochet symbols and I chart out the pattern. It does take time upfront to do this, but it saves time once I start crocheting because it takes out the guess work and eliminates errors (mostly 😉 )

Oh my gosh, when you were at row 4 on your first try, I saw the bottom of the sole that's what made me start thinking it was going to be a slipper, at one point I wanted you to keep going around but you stopped and turned. I was getting confused after that. I laughed out loud when I saw it was a slipper, because that was my thought early on. These patterns are so confusing to me.
I hope you give it another try, I'd like to see how it comes out 🤩

I know these! They're children's booties. Cus im as old as mold, i remember abs still have my first pair when I was two which was made from leather, it's completely unwearable. I have no idea how I wasn't crippled. The leather was so thick it literally must have been like I was wearing metal shoes. These woukd be so comfy for a small child at home as slippers with a moccasin leather sole.

  • @TheSassy1962
    @TheSassy1962 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

The sole was the first portion that you crocheted, which is why it said “to size”. Generally my soles are a peanut shape that comes from the three in the same stitch at either end. It is a continuous “row” around the oval. At that point I do a single row of back loop only all the way around, which will make the next row stand up at a 90* angle easily. Then the sole is complete and you are working on the top/sides of the slipper. After a few rounds the decease portion happens at the U shape of the toe, however this got muddled because they did the strap “built in” style first. I am a grandma and have made tons of slippers and booties for my grandkids, including baby cowboy boots, baby Reebok’s, and baby Mary Janes-which are the very closest to this pattern. I have seen some patterns with a squared off heel, and I suspect this might be one. I would have to crochet along next time I watch it to figure that part out! I thought you gave it a real go. A+ for effort! At first I was thinking it was a slipper, but when it went off the rails I had doubts…then I thought a bonnet, then a bag, then it just became a big crochet monster in my head. I was so relieved to see it was a slipper all along!

You had done it perfectly!!! All you needed to do was slip stitch the short edge to the front xD
Please have more confidence! You can do it.
You would have bought the sole separately and stitched it together.
Will get a copy and have a go

Just stand it up by itself and then get or make a sole and add it to the "building" up there...!!! BUT you have to stand it up first and, making believe the working counter is where the sole is supposed to be, fold the pointed section on its own over your left hand where the increases are, and it will start making sense to you... Hope it helps...!!! (BTW, it is a small slipper that needs alterating "the bridge" between both ends...)...

I was chuckling watching you with the slipper! You only made the top part, not the sole. Justin tweaked you on that one 😂

Sneaked to the comments to early. So we are making shoes 😁 next crossed from the list you would never chrochet. You can get soles to chrochet shoes (ad least here in Europe) . What if you knew what they ment? Only half the fun.

It seems like the "bra cup" is the heel, but Idk for certain. That is the most confusing pattern for slippers I have ever seen. I will NOT be attempting that!! GREAT effort!!

I know this doesn't help for this project, but those antique yarns all had the same size wrappers, so an 8 fold (Worsted/Aran) would have been a shorter length than the 4 fold (Sport) yarn in skeins. That's why it asked for 3 skeins of the 8 fold. That would have been about the same amount as the sport weight in length. I've had some antique yarns in my stash over the years.

I think if you joined it as you guessed at 39:37, you would have the complete upper portion of the slipper, and all you need now is the sole and the closing flap with the button?

You did it right. Just attach both ends and sew it to the sole.
