    I love that it appears to be a direct drive hubmotor. Performance wise this adds unsprung and rotational mass so not best for performance but nothing to wear out but axle bearings. So it will last without maintenance until it corrodes, if it's well sealed it should last basically forever only having to change bearing every 50,000-100,000 miles and replace battery which will be easy though pricey but each time battery tech should be a upgrade.

  • @scstudios8
    @scstudios8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Big hub motors generally are not good at handling bumps at all. The unsprung weight would be super high. This is why everyone has an inboard motor with a chain. If you hit a speed bump at 50mph, it may launch you into orbit. The mass hitting a big bump has no option other than to send all that mass up quickly regardless of what suspension you have. Someone really needs to ride this thing and see what that rear end handles like. It looks cool, its priced low. For low speeds, I am sure its fine, but 80mph may be pushing safety.

    I remember when I went into the local zero dealership years ago. The dealer basically repeated the material zero gave them on one of their first bikes. They told me sure you'd be able to go 16 miles to a neighboring Village with the bike I was looking at at a reasonable speed. I couldn't do 30 miles an hour and cover 16 miles one way with the motorcycle. Zero took my money to fund their upgrades. I really want an owner review before I watch another accolade on any electric motorcycle and put any money down. I'm glad you did this video and gave basic info but i have to take it as aspirational not factual.

    If you are taller, easy to add a much thicker seat. I used a dry weave T shirt as a new cover for an added foam pad, sewed together under the seat frame. It has held up for years. I would put a tire repair kit in the big hole. On a typical bike you pull in the clutch lever to brake, so it should be quick to back brake with your left hand.

    Great presentation! Though, I'm not quite sure about the rear brake lever placement, as when I do ride a bicycle which also has that, and have to stop at a traffic light at an incline, I use the pedals to keep the bike from rolling away, or put my feet on the ground in front or behind the pedals for that. Just so I don't continuously have to hold the brake waiting for a green light. On my motorbike I use the rear brake for that as it's much too heavy to muscle it stationary. Granted, at some 50kg this bike is lighter, but still it would be nice to be able to hold it in place without having to hold the brakes with your hands.

    Great presentation, but I think you're largely over estimating it's performance, and wholly misrepresenting it's power / performance figures. 80mile range with a 4kw battery is going to be nearly impossible. I have a 400lb Zero with 11.4 kWh battery and I see about 80 miles with typical intown riding. It would also help inform your viewers if you use the right terms to describe power output: @3:43, "peak power output is 14.4kWh" kWh would be the capacity of the battery, which is only 4kWh (4000Wh). This is like saying "my mustang has the power of a 18 gallon fuel tank" it doesn't make sense. THEN you compared the power of the Metacycle motor to the battery size of the livewire... WHAT?? this is such a misrepresentation, how did this get past editing? So your real comparison to the livewire would be 14kW (11hp) of the Metacycle to the 78kW of the Livewire (105hp). Not double the power... 5 times the power. OR 4kWh battery to ~15kWh battery. Don't compare apples to bananas

    So if you normally spend 10-15 bucks a week on gas, only ride 20-30 Miles a day and have solar panels and no Tesla Power-wall. This bike can act as a Power-bank/emergency power supply for nights and give you a ride in the morning that without fuel and servicing pays for itself in 5 years. All without oil stains on your clothes, driveway or garage. it sounds like a good deal. If it is reliable then it sounds like an epic deal.

    Nicer than any electric bike I’ve ever owned. If I had the ability to manufacture, I’d be making a fat boy removable battery pack housing to fill that gas tank empty space for longer hauls. Keep it looking like a gas tank but has an array of standardized swap out batteries inside. Just a thought.

    Tube tires? Special tire changing equipment needed? Battery is 50lbs, try carrying it up 3 flights of stairs. I do think they may have
    started mid price war. I think they are in the right price range. Need tubeless tires and no spokes, and they need to use the wasted space where the gas tank would be to carry stuff. Their going in the right direction.

    Unless something has changed and I need to do some more learning, hub motor means a lot of unsprung weight which will affect performance outside the city speed use. Will be great as a sub highway speed commuter. With a battery that small, I imagine standard L2/6kW is what they are talking about for standard EV chargers, and using that would be a real quick charge so that's pretty nifty.

    • @tscook10
      @tscook10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Micah at Electrek did an interview with Sondors and they said that the standard bike does not include an L2 charger port, but that it will be an accessory for that center frame hole. Alternatively they'll have an aux battery.

    I'll get one for my work commute if you carry my work stuff in your car and also store my bulky safety gear in it when I'm at work, OK?
    It's pretty, but without built-in storage, it's a toy, not a tool. Other than the storage issue, it's pretty much what I've been hoping for. If either Sondors or the aftermarket produce a nice storage compartment for that empty space in the middle, I'd give it a serious look.

    Love the looks, price and concept of this. One big concern......how do you grip the ‘tank’ with your legs when you ride?? And re the lack of clutch, it’s the same as riding a scooter! And that’s not a gear indicator. Many electric scooters have speed settings of 1, 2 or 3 to adjust for road and riding conditions.

  • @krane15
    @krane15 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If its going to sells spartan like that then accessory tie points and upgrades really need to be built-in. That seat for one is definitely polarizing and won't satisfy anyone outside of a very small group.
    Anyway, maybe they'll expand the line next year and make a slightly larger and more powerful 2 passenger model? This design appears to treat potential. Still, its too early to tell until the reviews start to come in on how well it rides and handles.

    you guys need to learn the difference between kilowatts and kilowatt hours....a kilowatt is a unit of power...a kilowatt hour is a unit of energy. This has a 4kWh battery pack and the motor is 14.5 kW (peak). The comparison to the Livewire is totally incorrect...the Livewire motor produces 78kW which is over 5 times the power of the Sondor. The Livewire battery is 15.5kWh max which is almost 4 times larger. Also the torque quoted on the website is 130ft-lbs which is pretty weak considering the Livewire supplies 834ft-lbs to the rear wheel. This bikes performance will likely be similar to a 250cc gas bike. The range value quoted is likely just complete BS..hence they didn't specify a actual test duty cycle...for reference a Zero FX3.6 has an estimated "city" range (per an SAE city duty cycle) of only 46 miles with a 3.6kWh battery and 247lb weight.

I can see why the rear brake is where it is if it’s meant for someone transitioning from bicycle to this but a conversion kit should be made available for motorcyclists to buy into this. • @custommotor
    @custommotor 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This looks like it could be a good cheap introductory electric motorcycle, but looking at it the design to me just looks like they put two bicycle frames together and fill it in the gap between. It's distinct, butI feel like there's a lot of negative space that can be used otherwise. Like the gap between the battery in the top of the frames. that needs to be filled in with a storage compartment that can either hold a charger, more batteries, or be storage. whatever it is it needs to be shaped more like a gas tank so that you can actually use your thighs and knees to hold yourself in case you have to stop quickly.
