    Just got to say this is the best channel on this platform. No annoying drawn out intros, no begging for likes and subscriptions, and when you do a sponsorship, it feels like its part of the video. Cant forget the wonderful camera work, amazing script, and overall beautiful production. There is no "fat" in these videos, every shot, word, and transition is gold. Amazing video like always.

      No joke! Even the product placement is just more useful information.
      It’s the opposite of those things that pop up in my feed, with some broad being all “so I’ve been getting a lot of questions about my face routine…” (NO, BONCH. NOBODY WANTS TO KNOW WHAT MAKEUP SHOTGUN YOU USE).
      When I watch F9, and I bet a lot of you are the same, I literally am like “damn these are shot well, I wonder what they use.”

      @@dheeraj_nadimpalli It’s spam. The same account is spamming all the other comments with the same thing. You see it all over TH-cam in the last several weeks. I never click the links but I’ll probably accidentally do it some time in the future. Someone is probably paying botnet operators to increase views of certain videos and this is one of their tricks. No idea how they keep TH-cam from filtering them. Normally, any post I make with a URL normally gets ghosts right away: I can see it but others can’t unless the channel operator digs it out of their spam comment list and marks it “not spam.”

    Nice video as usual. The price increase to about 7k at the time of this video from 5k when it was first announced changes the equation though. At the original offering, it was closer to scooters. Now when compared to 400-500cc motorcycles, it is a harder to justify easily given the company's short history and lower versatility (rather low top speed for much time on US motorways)

      I know this is 9 months old but I’m starting to research electric motorcycles as gas will eventually be banned in California. I can’t believe they’ve dared to wander into SV650 territory with this pricing

      @james45478 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@inthenickoftime__ Agree with part of your comment. Gas is not going to be banned for a long time in CA. Even in 12 years (2035), it will be new gas car sales that will stop. Used cars, slightly used cars imported from other states (loophole), and motorcycles will not be touched for 15-20. The tech and prices will be much better by then and you probably won't want a gas powered vehicle (based on performance, nostalgia maybe).

    • @inthenickoftime__
      @inthenickoftime__ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@james45478 I hope you’re right. There’s a lot that will have to change about infrastructure for electric cars and bikes to be viable for everyone. I considered buying an electric car until I realized I have no convenient way to charge it: my apartment complex was built in the 60’s, and while I do have access to regular 120v, level 1 charging is essentially useless, and the owner has no interest in adding any sort of charging capability. I’m sure I’ll have a house by the time it’s a problem, but that won’t be the case for lots of people. Sitting around for an hour in a parking lot waiting for my car to charge is simply not something I’m willing to do when I can fill a gas tank in 3 minutes.

    I like the concept of a minimalist e-motorcycle which has the spirit of a e-bicycle. A real errand runner which is not barred from taking a short jaunt on the highway. If the thing is reliable and doesn't leave you stranded with burnt-out MOSFETs I can see this bike making a lot of people very, very happy. What I'd like to see is some standardization in the lithium battery pack field. If the 50AH, 72V battery here (my rough guess) is costing you half the value of the bike, that's a significant investment. I'd like the battery to be able to be pulled easily, for urban dwellers who lack an outdoor charge outlet, and the compartment key-locked for battery theft prevention when briefly parked unattended. For homeowners, I'd like that battery pack to also work with a pure sine wave inverter as a handy AC power source during outages, and also be able to put it in a riding mower, powered watercraft (outboard or jet-ski), etc. Why buy multiple batteries for these things when you will be using only one of them at a time, or only sporadically?

    • @paulh6591
      @paulh6591 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@_implying This is true, one may cycle a lithium battery only so many times, and overcharging or repeatedly charging right up to 100% capacity further diminishes its longevity. But they have a shelf life too, and there is a profound environmental cost to manufacturing them, and an obvious monetary cost to buying the bigger ones. Time is not your friend regarding your battery investment, may as well use that battery; they are not an ornament to place on a shelf. Sure, power your phones, portable devices with proprietary-use lithium batteries but for bigger (18, 36, 48, 72, 102 volt) batteries there should be set, interchangeable batteries in group sizes. Within that group a maker could have caddies for two such batteries within that group should the current capacity for power and range demands require it.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      From what I understand this is the first version and unlike the Ninja, it's going to have a lot less maintenance to deal with as well as being something that you can charge at home.
      Don't get me wrong, the Ninja will do a ton of stuff that this won't, so you'd probably have been unhappy with this one. But as a cheap commuter motorcycle, it's probably a better choice.

    • @JCDenton3
      @JCDenton3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@SmallSpoonBrigade Maybe it is the first generation, but I would rather not be the one to beta test it on my dime. Maintenance is pretty easy and well understood on the Ninja, I did all the 7,500 mile stuff in the manual myself, and I think more mechanics would understand it over the metacycle right now.
      The other thing, the metacycle only started shipping recently. That means for $2k less I got about 6,500 miles in the saddle, and I calculated I saved an additional $1,750 in gas savings and parking fees this last year alone. I just don't feel there is anything the Metacycle can do right now aside from being electric that I am really missing.

    How useful is the "void" for storage. The oem thing probably doesn't hold a lot, but I can also see someone like Ryan just stuffing a backpack in the hole. And using tie downs around that thick bar. Being able to see that your bag is still there would be reassuring.

    • @kannermw
      @kannermw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EVs and their batteries are not cheap. You take significant cost out by downsizing the battery. Downsize the battery and the useful life and range go down exponentially. A major cost element in the battery is BMS which is has an initial high fixed cost independent of battery size. This fixed cost of BMS does nothing to enhance the useable range.
      There is no free lunch. Pay more initially or pay substantially more in the long-run. If you think you can buy cheap EV motorcycle without major pitfalls then you really can't afford one unless you need a 20 mile or less commuter that is single passenger only with limited overall utility. Then on resale there are not many buyers who want the same or there are but likely at 1/3 or less than the price of new.

    • @SirNarax
      @SirNarax ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kannermw It is worth considering that EVs and ICEs cannot be easily compared price point to price point. Selecting a 5,000 dollar EV and a 5,000 dollar ICE are not equal. The ICE costs much more as it will greatly surpass the EV in long term ownership costs.
      You are absolutely right though there isn't a 'free lunch' you pay more for more or you pay less for less. There isn't going to be a magic bullet that suddenly fixes the range besides fundamentally changing the shape of a motorcycle to be more aerodynamic. Just like you can't buy a 3,000 dollar 50cc scooter and expect it to munch highways, it just can't. You gotta temper your expectations.

    • @kannermw
      @kannermw ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SirNarax Telling me to temper my expectations to accept a crappy more expensive EV technology is like suggesting I should pay more for a lessor product I don't want or like. EV motorcycle is a completely stupid idea for anything other than daily commuter. Majority of people in U.S. ride a motorcycle mostly for recreation not basic transportation to save money. When I ride a motorcycle it is typically on weekends and about 180 miles to 220 miles per day. I am not interested in sitting around for 6 or more hours waiting for a battery to charge in the middle of a trip to save at most $15-$20 for a day of riding which is peanuts. Maybe I leave knowing bad weather is coming or the weather starts to change and I want to get back before that happens. Time is way more valuable to me than money. I have purchased three new motorcycles since 2013 and never kept one more than 4.5 years. All mileage under 25K. In my personal use case and I imagine many others an EV motorcycle is a impractical money pit for morons.

My circumstances required me to have transpiration soon rather than maybe later. The spec slipping was not a deal breaker for me. But the schedule slip was. The lack of communication between the customer and the producer was lacking and left many doubts. And yet I'm left wanting more - more range, especially. This will be a great stepping stone to a range of bikes that are genuinely usable and meet the needs of a variety of riders.

Sounds like a win to me! I'm hungry for a street legal dual sport that rides like an electric dirt bike, and it's only a matter of time.

      @@Felix-tp8ch o k a y? Who cares what you find 'not cool'. We will have to make that switch eventually like it or not. Oil is a very limited supply and burning it takes away the opportunity to ride for our children. EV is a normal motorcycle.

      @@waxdood With current usage we are expected to run out of fuel within the next 50 years or less. It will be more than that because as oil becomes harder and harder to find it becomes more and more expensive. Lithium from mines will last somewhere in the next 100 years.
      Both of these things can be artificially manufactured. Oil and it's oil based products such as plastic can be made out of things like Sugar Cane. Lithium can be harvested from Brine, natural or artificial.
      But it doesn't make sense to artificially create oil as a fuel source. Unless 100% of the grid is renewable and there is a massive excess in electricity, using power to create power to be burned isn't clever. Not that we have a choice as we are running out of all fossil fuels not just oil. Even if you did want to mass produce artificial oil hydrogen makes more sense. Then on top of that if 100% of the power grid was renewable battery powered vehicles make more sense not less.
      Lithium can not only be artificially produced but also recycled. It isn't which sucks but all this combined makes the argument that "we are going to run out of lithium" as an argument for the continued use of fossil fuels is an inaccurate one and couldn't be further from the truth. The only fossil fuel that will last anywhere near as long as the Lithium supply is coal, which sucks.

    Cool bike, I wish they came with 2 batteries that could be put in either series or parallel configuration allowing choice between extra range or power.

    • @DFX2KX
      @DFX2KX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      alas, while that works for AA/AAA batteries and simple lights, it gets more complicated when you're talking MOSFETS and switching-mode power supplies. The controller is built for a particular voltage range, top-to-bottom. putting two packs in series doubles the voltage, but keeps the max current the same. Putting them in parallel keeps the voltage the same, but doubles max current. It effectively comes out in the wash, with parallel being easier to accommodate electronically.

Only way to fix it is stuffing more batteries which drives up the cost or fundamentally redesign the shape of a motorcycle. I would also be curious though what you define as a "normal" range as many people do not have trips that need to cover more than 50 miles. That seems like a particularly long distance to travel.
