Just a quick note for those planning on doing this. There are many different new style key fobs, two genuine LR ones only difference being one has a Land Rover badge on the back one doesn’t. (The blank one being for the range rovers, the Land Rover badge being for the D4/ later freelanders). And there are many aftermarket ones of varying quality. If you find the circuit board/ buttons in side feel a bit squidgy after you have upgraded your key this is easily solved by putting a couple of the small double sided sticky pads inside the back part of the key.
Hi Lyle - thanks for the tip - I will play with this and add a couple of foam pads behind the board if we sell them - i did not this seemed to be bit less tactile in the video. I will pin this comment to top to help others
LR078921 is the part number for the Range Rover style with the chrome end cap being LR050787. LR078922 is the discovery 4 part number The chrome end cap being LR050788
Hey Simon. I bought a D4 new style key shell on EBay and spotted when it came it’s smaller. The guy on eBay said it wouldn’t fit and also called me Mate. What a cheek!!. Thanks to your video I know don’t have to send it back and can do the same little upgrade. Fantastic. Cheers Paul.
I did this with mine last year I also trimmed down the platforms that the circuit board fits on to so that the circuit board sits a fraction lower. That way the remote wasn’t so hard to snap together. Keep these great videos coming
I have done the same mod. yes the circuit board does sit a little low but I found that if you add a couple of small pieces of the soft side of self adhesive velcro to the back of the circuit board it gets over the problem of having to press the buttons so hard.
If you visit a local auto locksmith and you are missing the door key, they can produce one for your door, without needing to swap the door barrel, or remove it. Its a service we supply quite often on these proximity vehicles when the keys go missing.
Thank you for this video. Without your help I wouldn´t know I have to grind off the corner of printed circuit and I would still be thinking why I can´t click it together 😀
I was just re-watching this video, as I think I might like to upgrade my 2010 key to the later, smaller style, and as I watched I was wondering: The two blades seem the same, aside from hinge thing on the end of the newer one. On that newer keyfob, the key blade just sort of slides into fob as a kind of holder for it, they aren't actually connected where the blade hinges out, as in the old one. So can you slide the old blade into the new fob and it actually hold and contain it? Is the hinge part on the new blade just for leverage when using it? Could you maybe fashion a little something to snap into the end of old style blade to serve the same function and still allow the new style fob to hold the old blade? Which is to say, can I do this in such a way as to keep my old blade so I wouldn't need to change out my barrels?
Thank you! I just did the conversion from old key fob (2012 L322) to the slim new version. Had to do a bit of filling on two corners but otherwise very simple. Did you happen to post the video on putting the old key fob back together?

The new genuine replacement case is no better than the original, it suffers from the same manufacturing/design fault as the original where the rubber face comes off the plastic case behind and cannot be reattached. So maybe the new style fob with the chrome is the solution 🤔

Interesting - try disconnecting and re-connecting the battery... it cannot be the starter relay as this must work when you use the fuse.

Hi Mark- check out Lyle's comment above - may be worth adding a bit of foam at the back of the board to help the tactile feel..
A great video
Thanks!
I like the bulky fob. How do I convert the slim key fob to the bulky one?
It should be much simpler - should be a straight swap but the chunky fob is much more expensive !

You will need to get a new key cut
whats the t name of the tool you used and the app pleaee

Maybe thats why they changed it ?

Now if you where a proper old school landy owner you'd of just used an angle grinder or bench grinder rather than fiddling with a needle files lol
But I had the nail files out anyway to do my nails...
