    I was hunting for a A9ii v A7IV video (I’m a wedding photographer), found this and think it pretty much helped me decide on upgrading my 2 A7iii’s for the A9ii! Great content man, thank you.

    We use two A7iii for video. With the A7iv coming out. we are not upgrading and will be adding a lens and another a7iii. You can do a cinetone like PP with the A7iii anyway and clients are still good with 1080. Even if we go for 4K video, it will change the workflow and will have more requirements and cost with minimal gains.
    For photo, we have two A9 and love it for the silent shooting. A9 is still a beast especially when paired with a GM lens like the 50mm 1.2
    Don't believe the hype. Use what gets the job done :)

      Maybe, I misunderstood, but recording 4K video doesn’t add to the cost or change the workflow unless you are on a seriously dated and weak computer using a buggy software like Adobe PP.

    Another great comparison, I got the A7IV, I had the A9 and sold it. I found the A9 files to have less dynamic range than my A7 III files, but I loved the no-blackout viewfinder. That is easily the best usable feature I have come across and what I miss most. I contemplated an A1, but just more than I can justify ($$$$). Considered the A9 II, but having the shot with A7R IV I really liked having that extra ability to crop. There were times with the A9 I wished for a little more crop-ability. So with all that in mind, I went with the A7 IV.

    • @carbon6372
      @carbon6372 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got the a7R IV as well. I thought of upgrading to the a1, but I will probably need two bodies either way, eventually, both to use one prime on each and have a backup, so I will probably keep the a7R IV and pair it with the a9 II. Just an amateur as of now, but if I do become a professional soon, I’m adding the a9 II. The lack of blackouts will also be great for when I casually photograph wildlife; at least with birds in flight, while I will stick to the a7R IV for still subjects. But if you don’t care for the blackouts, the a7R IV and a7 IV are more than enough; all of these have phenomenal focusing systems. What do you use your camera for?

    • @rammurthy7686
      @rammurthy7686 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, after a few months how are you liking the A7iv vs the A9? Do you miss it? I'm looking to switch as well. I'm considering the same things, more dynamic range and ability to crop. Just dont want to lose the sticky AF on the A9... I never really used it for biding or fast action, just family portraits and hoping to get into weddings soon.

  • @nevermore311
    @nevermore311 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a great comparison. I'm still on my entry level APS-C gear, and ready to move up from my Canon SL3. Once you look mirrorless, the older Sony market shines above all this brand new Canon stuff that doesn't have a great lens selection. Video is not in my wheelhouse yet, and I want a broad selection of stills capability ranging from astro and landscape over to sports and events someday. As nice and affordable as the A7iii and A7iv are for the diversity they deliver, I think the smart move is to wait until the A9iii comes out and see how far the A9i and ii drop on the used market. I'm pretty excited, because I think the A9i is perfectly sufficient for me. Anyone who's gaga for a reliable e-shutter, my plan is to wait until 2024 and see how friendly the prices get. The A9i is still super relevant today for non-professionals.

    Omgosh yay!!! You addressed my question/comment and made this video 😂 ❤️❤️❤️
    Oh and oops I guess I should of asked “would you buy the a7iv if you already have the a9?” Because I feel like if you don’t a camera at all then of course the a7iv is the best route… right now.
    But thank you!!!! Thank you for making this video. I love itt!!
    But one thing about the a7iv that is kind of a inconvenience is the different Sd cards it will hold. Ok, with my a9, both slots holds the same type of Sd cards and when I am not writing on both cards, when one gets full, I can switch to the other card. Like a storage unit. And/or I can use it for separating work with clients vs personal photographer with the different cards but the same type more easily with just being able to swap the cards out. It’s just one more thing to carry and to always have to carry additional Sd cards on me and we all know they are so fragile and we are scared of the cards failing from being over handled, the different types of card slots for the 7iv just lacks that bit of reassurance for me for if I run out of memory in one card and also because the new card it uses is much more expensive! I don’t even know if it’s worth it for just doing photography and not video but at the same time the a7iv video is kind of lacking with the crop.. so why… why upgrade the memory when the video is lacking buuuuuut it can record longing but just crops 🥴
    Like what gives Sony??? So I can record longer less than ideal videos to write on a much more expensive memory card faster? And if I primarily want to use a7iv for just photos the requirement for the new type of sd card seems unnecessary. Ugh just such a shame 😑. The SD card adds to the overall price because it’s new! Not all Sony alpha camera owners would already have it.

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I probably wont be going to the CF express type cards myself, I didnt on the A7siii. There is even less of a reason unless you really need the endless buffer (which my Siii already does on conventional SD cards). And mostly for the reasons you stated, I dont want to juggle cards, it's either all or none. Good thing is that the CF Express slot is a two in one slot, so you can choose to use either one. Thanks for watching.

    I mainly care for stills (action/sport/wildlife), not video.
    Before A74 release I was using A73. After the release, I've decided to switch to Sony A9 (used) as it was cheaper and much better fit for me needs.

      if you dont do video, stick with the A9, blackout free, buffer, raw power, amazingly good camera, and at the same time............................ video is so fun 😆. The A1 is better of course, but going from A7 of any kid to A9 is drastic, going from A9 to A1 is evolutionary with the exception being video, the A1 is the total package..... almost. If only the controls were as good as the A7iv, hands down the best controls of them all due to the small subtle changes.

    Unless you're a photo journalist or sports shooter, you don't need the a9. I have the a9II & a7III, that is WAY MORE camera than what most people need for photo or video. I'd say get the a7III for cheap since you're not likely getting paid to drop $2500+ for cameras and lenses. You also need to be using GM lenses to get the absolute most from the a9.

    Love my a9ii glad I didn’t sell it, bought the a7iv it’s nice, but I just started doing video, in terms of raw speed, sorry it doesn’t keep up, the other thing I shoot outdoors and push these little cameras, even after setting the high temp the a7iv over heated. I was shocked, did 1080 on the a9ii and after a few more jobs I am just going for the a1 or waiting a little longer hopefully a9iii until then I hope the a7iv grows on me.

  • @mariuszuk79

    great video! I still have a dilemma. Which one would you choose for dog photography? I like the higher resolution of A7IV BUT 20FPS with a faster AF of A9/A9II would be much better for a dog running towards the camera. Would 10fps be enough? I don't care about video capability. This is a tough choice.

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A9 easily, for a few reasons
      pivotal moments
      shutter abuse, have at it, it's electronic, 100K shots a year? no problem
      buffer, the A9 has a deep 200 shot vs 34 of the A7iv?
      the A9 has the worst video features, and as a hybrid shooter that does more video that stills, it's one of my higher priorities, that's why I dont own it anymore and cant afford an A1........... but for stills, the A9 is an absolute monster, even without the bird eye af, the amount of keepers you get is jaw dropping. if you can rent/borrow, try it out, feels like your playing video games at first, and then you realize that it's a flagship camera for a reason. No way my siii or a7iv can keep up to the A9, it's wishful thinking. 20fps seems like overkill.... and it could be if you're not accustomed to using it, but once you figure out a good workflow, it's easily manageable.

Still have no idea how to make it work consistently and hating it more each day. But, some tell me I'm crazy for wanting to switch to 7iv. I don't do video, but mostly birds and BIF and general photography, so there is a lot about the 7iv I like. Am I nuts?.

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      your scenario is different, the A7iv specifically has bird eye AF, so that will make your life a lot easier, although there are two things about that, First is if you shoot small birds and have to get physically close, you may scare them off (mechanical shutter is loud). Secondly, you will lose 20fps. birds are literally the hardest subject to deal with IMO, much more difficult than sports or other forms of wildlife.

    I upgraded from A73 to the original A9 and there is no comparison really on Af. If your into Wildlife, Action its the 9 series or the A1. I cant really see any real point in going to the A911 for the extra expense unless you need to transmit your images faster. The A9 for mega fast focus and rapid exposures is king at a good pricepoint. I admit no sign of bird eye af coming its way but that doesnt always work perfectly, what does. Also no blackout with the A9 over the A74 and Video with much less panning distortion (rolling shutter) make the A9 the best for me.

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the A9 is not free from rolling shutter in video. The A7iv is leagues ahead the A9 when it comes to video, the dynamic range is probably better by 3-4 stops, extremely easy to clip the A9, and color depth is no comparison, you don't LOG and that can make a massive difference. Sony did that camera dirty when it comes to video, and any camera with log can easily outperform, rolling shutter is not going to save that camera, it's lower on the totem pole of video features. When it comes to stills, I would rather have the A9 capabilities, simply because it's so fun, it's like a sports car for groceries, it doesn't have to make sense. Overheating isn't an issue for me, and I film with the A7iv a lot.... however, I can see if you're filming an entire sports even and leave it in the sun or something, the whole two hours, it might overheat? th-cam.com/video/0d7qleM5gjo/w-d-xo.html

    Mainly for all kinds of photos, landscape, portraits, nature, street, etc. I chose A7 IV and I am very satisfied.
    Definitely better photo quality, ISO level, colors, much better editing options, much better dynamic range - all this is very visible and better in the A7 IV than in the A9.
    In 2023, after many updates, AF in the A7 IV does not lag behind the A9.
    Ergonomics, a multi-directional LCD screen, and much better video capabilities in the A7 IV are simply much better than in the A9.
    The A9 is simply overrated.

Fast AF is important but I shoot portraits and events and sometimes even sports. All that data was a complete a$$ pain also, so I’m good with the 24 mp.
