People who say it is too easy forget that you still have to keep the bird in the frame, position yourself well, think about composition, etc. Fun video with birds many of us wish were available in our own backyards. :)
definitely, keeping the birds in the frame is still very hard and I missed a lot of shots. In a another video soon, I am trying kingfishers in full flight, not take off....that was hard :D

Definitely amazing, this Sony gear that recently came out. Already looking forward to your upcoming videos. All the best and many thanks for all the fantaseic videos you produce for us!
You have great ears! I played a round with the internal NC of the Mic when I was in the yard and for the outdo and that didn't;t work very well, it got rid of the noise, but also made the voice sound kinda odd
What a show Jan! just hearing the shutter sound of the A 9 Mark III!! I get goosebumps!! then that garden? keeping all those birds so close is truly a dream!! I can only say that you are lucky greetings!!👍👍👍👍
Jan, you might consider a special series on how to set your backyard... certainly beside your incredible location, there are many subtle and few overt (food) tricks that you utilize to set a bird oasis. Clearly, even the position and distance between the upper perches respective to next level, and to the feeder dishes allows for amazing shooting opportunities with full wingspan and with gorgeous distant (out-of-focus) background for your camera shots. There are many tips for all levels of bird photography. It was a wonderful video!
Stunning video Jan, and what an amazing backyard you have. Wish you all the happiness there. Amazing photos, and birds too. Loved this kind of video. Cheers, Bjoern
Am absolutely blown away by these pictures!!!!! Beautiful setting in your garden. Especially liked to watch you take these amazing pictures. Great video. Wish I was there....
Love the kookaburra intro 🙂 A9 III is definitely not cheating, I own the Sony A1 and bird in flight is still fairly difficult because I simply don't have the personal skills and experience practicing it. You can hand a beginner a $20,000 camera and it's not a magic switch to taking amazing photos, it's all about experience and developing skills over time, also a camera isn't going to help you find rare birds!
Yeah Kurtis - the old adage of expensive knives do not make a chef. I suspect if most of us sat with Jan in his backyard shooting constantly for several days our skills and keeper rate would skyrocket. But I would still love an A9III - just as a BIF body, you know, just as a spare in case I need it.
@@user-nf7cr6wn6o Na don't be jealous, I could only afford the A1 because of the overtime I do, I work full-time and 24/7 breakdowns. I hardly get any spare time so instead of trips and holidays I buy gear instead even though I would prefer more time in the field rather than gear. Also the A1 was technically a bad financial decision when I'm meant to be saving for a house. House prices have literally doubled in my state in the last 3 years. There is my little bit of complaining ☺but in reality the past 3 months have been fine 40hrs a week work, I have had lots of time for birding. I do understand that working as a musician can be a very difficult, definitely can be underpaid, even though you probably provide lots of value to events.
Hi Jan, I normally like your videos a lot, and the today’s video make’s me think an laugh! Your last argument it’s absolutely correct, but, I surprised myself thinking… “I wonder if one day I could buy a kit camera-lens and tell them to go walk my Dog, buy me a couple of fresh colas, and if it’s not too much trouble, take to me 10 photos of a beautiful bird (nothing specific because today I don’t wanna think to much) with a beautiful Jan,s W. background. Congrats from Portugal, Mate, and keep on rolling 👍😅
Nice video Jan , great camera ,photographs and great photos too. My observations on your videos and Duade as I only follow the two of you in Australia. I've observed that birds in Australia are not afraid of people they can allow you to get very close and afford you a great opportunity to photograph them . I live in South Africa it's only a few places where wild birds can give you that opportunity. Because they're hunted in many parts of Africa.
It all depends where you are and if you can find the right spots. There are tame birds everywhere if you look around. I have loved in Vancouver, Austin, Berlin and I found birds in all places. Sometimes even the same bird will sit right next to you in one spot and be scared in a different setting
Great Episode Jan! For me this Documentary style of you Actually doing your Expert Craft is Extremely Interesting and Helpful!! Including Video of your Face and Voice reactions to the Successful Shots was Really Good too!!
Great photos with hefty gear. The ecm W3 mic also does what it is supposed to do and does it well. The ease of use is worth paying a bit extra for when working solo with video reportage and documentary.
Jan I love the Kookaburra Bird that you have there all that is great and he must be a regular visitor to your yard to be that close to him please show him some more I love that there Jan .
Atm I just enjoy using all the different tools from Canon Sony and Nikon. At the end of this year the landscape for the next few years should be a lot clearer. If I was gonna switch, I'd definitely have to see an R5 II, R1 and A1 II first
Very beautiful photos! Interessting to see what a global shutter is able to do. Seems like now you can completely focus on lighting and composition and keeping the bird in frame and you don‘t have to worry about the camera not being fast enough
Thank you. Very impressive. But you left out whether you will consider adopting an A9III or its lower resolution prevents you from considering it. Give your thought on it.😊 I will of course continue to watch your channel and videos to see what you also think of Canon’s new EOS R5 II if it comes out in July as the updated rumors claim. Take care.
Amazing photos. Will this camera still maintain focus even during high frame rate shooting? For example the A7RV will have it's focus locked on the first frame when shooting at any speed above lo speed continuous.
Fantastic images! That camera is indeed a beast. As for your mic: it's very sensitive. So sensitive, it picked up the sound of you swallowing at 7:17. You might want to reduce the gain a bit. 😉 (EDIT: the sound suddenly got a bit tinny and echoey at 9:40. What happened?)
Yes, the mics pick up a lot. The sound got a bit funky when I tried the internal Noice cancellation for a while. I shouldn't;t have done that, but couldn't;t refill everything. It works better with no NC and then applying NC in post
I really enjoyed this video. The birds you get in your yard are spectacular. If I had birds like this, I'd never leave my house. The Sony A9 III, as demonstrated by you, appears to be a great camera. Of course that 600mm lens doesn't hurt. My fingers are 🤞🏼 that the new Canon R5 II will give us some great features to better help us capture birds in flight. Thanks, Jan!
Not your biggest fan, but I have to admit that this video is a home run. I just got the A9III and I'm also using it to shoot birds at my feeders, but the perching setup is not as nice as yours and I don't have a 600mm f/4 lens! Still, the concept is the same and I'm getting some amazing shots. It's a big thumbs up from me.
Superb! Would love to see more of that Sony 600 f4. But for the moving/flying bird why are you not using a focus are W/ tracking? seems like you are just using regular AF on. The tracking mode should be even better for moving targets.
Great images - I hope it wasn't too tedious sorting through all the images 😉 I know for a fact that with pre-capture and a high frame rate, it can be a lot haha. Cheers 👍😀
Very impressive. I've tried this with the R5, RF 1-5 on song birds near a feeder and I easily burned through 5 thousand shots just to get a couple keepers. I was not very successful compared to your results in this video. My biggest problem was trying to keep the BIF in the EVF. The movement is so fast, and sometimes erratic. Kind regards.
Yes that’s the hardest part. My main issue with the R5 is that I always get bad wing poses, it almost never seems to be in the right rhythm to give me the banking pose. Must be the 20fps not being a frequency birds flap in
Thank you for your „test“, great pictures, but no surprise there when it comes to you delivering quality. Are the 24MP vs about 45MP in Canon and Nikon (and even a stacked sensor there) worth mentioning for bird photography?
Jan, great video of some of Australia's beautiful birds. As for the Sony A9 III, some reviewers complain that its global shutter reduces resolution and that the camera lacks the dynamic range of the A9 II. What has been your experience here, compared to previous cameras you have owned? It obviously delivers the goods when doing flight photography, but is its price worth it for the wildlife photographer who does flight photography but also photographs other subjects where there is little quick action?
@@jan_wegener As I recall, the general thrust was that the A9 III was a great camera for those who photograph sporting events, e.g. basketball - lots of split-second action. Such images will soon be used/published, so it is not critical that they be extremely sharp and lack noise. The implication was that for the latter two features, there are better cameras out there, even the A9 II.
A1 has less noise and better resolution. A1 still the camera to beat for bird photography as far as i am concerned...now if the a9 IV brings the pixels up then that will be a different story
I'll talk more about that in my full review. I love the A1, but it's so behind on the video functionality side of things that I never really considered it, since it would not work for me as my main body
Wow on those amazing photos! Wow on that amazing camera…..hey Canon time to step up! Wow on your incredible back yard and all those beautiful perches and beautiful birds! Wow on another great video Jan! PS - more Kookaburras….yes they are a bit drab but they are so much fun and have such cheeky personalities 😀
Thanks for the great images. Just wondering you have to have a tripod to capture images like these ? Sorry, I'm a super beginner. I tried handheld to capture fast flying birds but it was so hard to get focussed.
Very jealous of how easy you could take such photos at your backyard! Just invested in Z600/4TC & RF100-300/2.8L so I’m not going to consider A9iii. Hopefully both Nikon and Canon would bring pre-capture functionality to Z9 and R3/ R5ii/ R1 very soon.
Awesome camera and video Jan!! What an amazing back yard you have!! I was wondering what the shutter life is with the A9iii ? I worked out that if it was 500k, you would only get 4,166 seconds of use at 120 fps!! That equates to just over an hour (61.4 minutes) of continuously shooting.
I knew about the electronic shutter.........I was just having a joke........looks like it backfired! Should have mentioned that I'm jealous as.........what a magnificent bit of kit!!
Great demo and great skill. It is not cheating at all. It takes a lot of practising. I also own an A9III, as well as an A1 and A9. I shoot sports and concerts, which is similar to wildlife in many aspects. High shutter speed and high ISO as well as low light. In the past 2 month, I shot more than 30'000 pictures in concerts and sports events. DR and ISO is no problem for me as well. I regularly shoot between ISO 1000-51200. My workflow is DxOpureRAW4 --> CaptureOne. I love watching your videos, as they are a reference in high action BIF photography.
Love your videos. Where do you live (just area) that has so many beautiful birds flying around? Short of the humming birds, I only get the ugly black birds (Los Angeles area). Even the pigeons seems to be not around anymore.
I'm very curious how the RAW images would look like with high ISO without Topaz. I'm using EOS R3 and I would say it is pretty good, together with 500/4 prime lens I'm not complained. But this pre-capture system combined with 120 fps is a game changer. In the meantime 120fps is in JPG right? How much can the camera shooting in RAW?
Superb environment with exotic birds with the resulting photos exceptionally impressive however I must indicate that the sound is not optimum to say the least. Consequently, permit me to request you if you can provide the manufacturer and model of the equipment in response to this request as it would be greatly appreciated. Your presentations are very well presented I should hope you will continue in your endeavor.
I'm still using the Canon 5D4 and looking to upgrade. Can EF lenses be adapted for Sony? How efficient is the AF if so? My EF L lenses need adapting for use on any mirrorless, but I assume that the Canon mirrorless might be more efficient - but by how much? I'm tired of Canon's low-pass filter and several other issues. I have a lot of L lenses and might be able to purchase only a single Sony telephoto lens - would it be worthwhile for me to change brands?
I wouldn't really want to shoot with adapted lenses from another brand consistently. It will probably work ok, but there will be a bunch of limitations. In that case a Canon body with an adapted EF lens may be the better choice.
What distance were you shooting at? How is it for quality at a pretty substantial crop for longer distance shots. Thinking of trading in my A7iv for this but don't want to lose reach.
Yes, tricky with the field mics, they all sound different. This one I liked, but when I tried the internal noise cancellation it got a bit funky, which you can hear in a few bits
@@jan_wegener 😂….I figured that. I’d love to see the A7R6 get the pre capture feature, think I’d f find that more valuable vs the 120fps & global shutter.
As for the mic, my first thought was "there is something wrong with the sound". I really think it doesn't sound good. As for the A9iii, it's very good as it is. But you were shooting very tight. If you had a 45 MP sensor doing similar FPS, you could use a 400 mm and have even more keepers. Let's see what Canon delivers with the R5ii and the R1.
@@jan_wegener The base ISO being 250, dynamic range and the high ISO noise performance. A super fast stacked sensor is still, overall, a better bet. A stacked sensor with a mechanical shutter/sensor readout speed would be ideal for 99.999% of people. The sensor in my R6 ii is staggering in its performance, but the slower readout speed means a lot of deleted shots with oval balls that need to be round, and bird wings that looks funky. I don't like using the MS... but needs must and all that.... I have found that for sports if you're panning in the same direction as a ball is travelling you negate the rolling shutter distortion largely, which is nice :)
While certainly fantastic images - I have a critique? well really a question or maybe just a statement :) - I'll let you decide. I think with your set-ups there it would be much easier to captures the stunning pics you did, because after a while you'll get to notice a "pattern" with the birds that are coming there? plus, you're nice and close so the 24 - megapixels wouldn't really see any issue's there either? do you plan to go out and about with the set-up to see how it performs in everyday conditions? Thanks
It's not easier at all in my opinion. I am not a wildlife photographer, but I shoot sports and rock concerts with a lot of very fast action. The A9III is not the limiting factor. It's your level of skills. You have to practice a lot to master this camera and configure it in an optimal way to be as efficient as possible in your genre.
@@renestaempfli1071 - let me disagree with you for just an instant and an example - you have a starting pitcher throwing a ball 60-feet to a batter - it's the same distance every time - you train your focus on the plane (path) where the bat should connect with the ball - over the course of several innings you'll figure the Caidence of the pitcher and eventually you'll get the shot - bat hitting ball - in the process taking hundreds of photo's or maybe even thousands for that 1 pic -now relief pitcher comes in - how long does it take for you to get the same shot? bat hitting ball - now walk down the street and have someone throw a ball from behind a building - did you get the shot? even if you knew it was coming odds are you didn't - and at most had up to a 100 photo's (chances) why? because it wasn't staged or repetitive enough? while it may not be easy, it's easier when you know you're going to have another chance from the same direction. my last point would be Jans own words when he started the video as to why he was in his backyard - I'm paraphrasing here - because it was predictable where the birds would land - top perch first - then fly down to the lower one. Lastly, I'm NOT knocking the approach, I'm truly interested in how the set-up performs in the "real world" let's say.
@@TheWildlifeGallery388 I shoot things like swallows, martins and parrots in flight and the A93 crushes the A1 for acquisition speed and accuracy of focus tracking. Not to even mention that at 120fps you get dozens of wings poses in a fraction of a second. So for surprise action the A93 is even better because you can snatch a few frames out the air, where other cameras wouldn't even acquire focus.
Great shots I'm just not a Sony fan, I'm still waiting for the rumored pre capture raw for Nikon which I think was BS anyways, Just stupidity by Nikon 11mpix jpeg only, I'll probably be switching to the R1 or R5II we'll see.
There will always be a distinct difference, video AF and photo AF are very different and so are the shutter speeds, unless you’re only shooting video to extract stills. The amount of storage needed to film all these scenes in 4 or 8k and 120fps would also be astronomical
I will talk about that in my full review coming soon, it all depends if 24MP are enough for you for a daily shooter. Overall it's a a lot more advanced than A1, but I am sure there will be a crazy A1 II at some stage
Thank you for your video and the possibilities we will get from a frame rate up to 120 and precapture in RAW. You only need enough light. The future is starting…
Knocked this video out of the park Jan. I wouldn't say increases your keeper rate 😅 still have 119 frames a second that aren't the photo you're after haha
Not sure that's wise... Sonys firmware support is horrible. Very greedy company that will hold back firmware features to sell you they're next camera. Lots of unhappy users out there

They definitely are and I will in the review
Wow, the technology is fantastic. Hope it comes to all our cameras one day!
That's what this beast is made for.
Great review.
definitely
How do you record video while taking photos, please respond I am so curious
With multiple camera and lenses. Or do you mean the EVF? For that I use my Ninja V
@@jan_wegener oh ok thanks!
Jan, great video of some of Australia's beautiful birds. As for the Sony A9 III, some reviewers complain that its global shutter reduces resolution and that the camera lacks the dynamic range of the A9 II. What has been your experience here, compared to previous cameras you have owned? It obviously delivers the goods when doing flight photography, but is its price worth it for the wildlife photographer who does flight photography but also photographs other subjects where there is little quick action?
what do you mean by reduce resolution?
@@jan_wegener As I recall, the general thrust was that the A9 III was a great camera for those who photograph sporting events, e.g. basketball - lots of split-second action. Such images will soon be used/published, so it is not critical that they be extremely sharp and lack noise. The implication was that for the latter two features, there are better cameras out there, even the A9 II.
Amazing shots! I was wondering how the A9III would do compared to the A1 for birds.
Thanks so much
Thanks for the great images. Just wondering you have to have a tripod to capture images like these ? Sorry, I'm a super beginner. I tried handheld to capture fast flying birds but it was so hard to get focussed.
Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Generally for flying birds no tripod is easier unless it's a very heavy lens
@@jan_wegener Thanks for reply. Using FE 200-600 mm F5.6-6.3 G and a quite heavy.
Beautiful
Great video Jan. Love your little friend. Awesome camera, would love to have one.
Yes, fingers crossed!
Amazing shots Jan! Do you sell your photos to publications or do books? Your work is so inspiring!
Sometimes, but not something I focus on. It's always a lot of hassle with generally little return, so I rather make videos for you guys
Very cool!
Jan are you working on a 300 F2.8 with x2.0 tele? or do I have to do that 🙂
I will make a video about that combo soon
@@jan_wegener great. I can't wait.
I'd really like to see a comparision against 200-600 and Z8+600PF.
A1 & 200-600 is closer to Z8 & 180-600. Not fair to test a zoom against a prime. Also, A1 is still a faster body than the Z8
@@nrocha2466 Its not about being fair. I am interested to know if it is a significant upgrade.
Hi Jan! I have you in mind beeing a Canon Fan, but now it seams that Sony brought you the technology you were waiting for. 😇😄
I am a fan of whichever is the best gear for the job :D
Wow crazy camera :)
When using the ninja v with the a9iii, are you able to shoot photos and record the viewfinder simultaneously?
Yes
Awesome camera and video Jan!!
What an amazing back yard you have!!
I was wondering what the shutter life is with the A9iii ?
I worked out that if it was 500k, you would only get 4,166 seconds of use at 120 fps!!
That equates to just over an hour (61.4 minutes) of continuously shooting.
LOL, there is no shutter at all. It's a global capture sensor, what would be the point of a mechanical shutter. Even the Nikon Z9 has no shutter.
Electronic Shutter only, so it should never break, no moving parts
I knew about the electronic shutter.........I was just having a joke........looks like it backfired!
Should have mentioned that I'm jealous as.........what a magnificent bit of kit!!
@@archiemccafferty9136 haha, you never know on the internet :D Yes, it's pretty wild how quickly you'd rack up the shots!
It`s like the special equipment on car..you don`t want to be without what you once had. But the car also drives without these features.
thanks so much for sharing another wonderful vieo like always!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for sharing!
Love your videos. Where do you live (just area) that has so many beautiful birds flying around? Short of the humming birds, I only get the ugly black birds (Los Angeles area). Even the pigeons seems to be not around anymore.
Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia
Bonjour Jan. Please les références de ta tête de trépied. Bonne continuation. Philippe

Sir will u switch to sony system? Is sony 's AF system better than Canon?
I will see what the future holds. The Sony AF is very good, but also has some "interesting" behaviour at times, I will talk about it in my full review
Thank you sir
Wow!
Jan where do you get / make those perches?
The base is some trees, that why we have all the nice leaves, the perches I collect where it's allowed
The 120fps is full 14bit RAW
Superb environment with exotic birds with the resulting photos exceptionally impressive however I must indicate that the sound is not optimum to say the least. Consequently, permit me to request you if you can provide the manufacturer and model of the equipment in response to this request as it would be greatly appreciated. Your presentations are very well presented I should hope you will continue in your endeavor.
Very cool feature, and images, fingers crossed Canon is going to include pre-capture and a 'turbo' setting in their new cameras.
I hope so! It's must have at this stage
I will talk about that in my full review. 24 MP is what it is, you are kind if limited
@@jan_wegener looking forward to it.
Really curious how it'll compare with the R1 or R5ii when they come out.
same
Cool features on the A9III. However the sound from those microphones makes it sound like you're speaking through a scarf.
Yes I agree. Your regular mic is doing a lot better job.
Yes, tricky with the field mics, they all sound different. This one I liked, but when I tried the internal noise cancellation it got a bit funky, which you can hear in a few bits
So, do you miss not having more MP’s to give greater cropping options?
Yes
@@jan_wegener 😂….I figured that. I’d love to see the A7R6 get the pre capture feature, think I’d f find that more valuable vs the 120fps & global shutter.
As for the mic, my first thought was "there is something wrong with the sound". I really think it doesn't sound good.
As for the A9iii, it's very good as it is. But you were shooting very tight. If you had a 45 MP sensor doing similar FPS, you could use a 400 mm and have even more keepers. Let's see what Canon delivers with the R5ii and the R1.
I liked the mic in parts, but when I tried the internal NC in the mic, it made my voice feel funny and I struggled to get it back to sounding great.
I think I'd definitely like to have a A9 iii, or at least its replacement when the issues are refined, if they can be.
which ones?
@@jan_wegener The base ISO being 250, dynamic range and the high ISO noise performance. A super fast stacked sensor is still, overall, a better bet. A stacked sensor with a mechanical shutter/sensor readout speed would be ideal for 99.999% of people. The sensor in my R6 ii is staggering in its performance, but the slower readout speed means a lot of deleted shots with oval balls that need to be round, and bird wings that looks funky. I don't like using the MS... but needs must and all that.... I have found that for sports if you're panning in the same direction as a ball is travelling you negate the rolling shutter distortion largely, which is nice :)
def waiting to see what the r1 brings before I get that shooter
Damn, this camera has great image quality.
Thanks Jan for this video! Why not sharing some Raw files so we can see the IQ ourselves?
I'll see if I can do that for the full review
Hi Jan. I'm thinking about getting you master class, presets and brush pack. Is that sold as one package?
you can send me an email, it's seperate, but maybe we can work something out ;)
While certainly fantastic images - I have a critique? well really a question or maybe just a statement :) - I'll let you decide.
I will photograph Kingfishers in full flight next, that should be enough of a challenge ;) Video to come soon
@@jan_wegener - true enough - rotten little Rascals - Thanks
Great shots I'm just not a Sony fan, I'm still waiting for the rumored pre capture raw for Nikon which I think was BS anyways, Just stupidity by Nikon 11mpix jpeg only, I'll probably be switching to the R1 or R5II we'll see.
Amazing photos Mr. Jan.
G'day.
Thank you!
What camera did you use to take video of birds?
Some A9 III, rest R5
At what point do we just switch to shooting video and taking frames from said video?
There will always be a distinct difference, video AF and photo AF are very different and so are the shutter speeds, unless you’re only shooting video to extract stills.
The amount of storage needed to film all these scenes in 4 or 8k and 120fps would also be astronomical
@@jan_wegener good to know! Thanks for the response! Do you think that will be the future at some point?
@@Michael-ps7jino
Great vid and pretty convincing re: should I upgrade from my A1
I will talk about that in my full review coming soon, it all depends if 24MP are enough for you for a daily shooter. Overall it's a a lot more advanced than A1, but I am sure there will be a crazy A1 II at some stage
At half the resolution it's not exactly an upgrade
Why you use 5.6 aperture?
Instead of what? I don’t want to use F4, because half the bird will be out of focus. If I could I’d use F8
How is the bird called in the beginning and end of the video? Looks funny!
The laughing Kookabura?
any overheating issues ?
not really
Thank you for your video and the possibilities we will get from a frame rate up to 120 and precapture in RAW. You only need enough light. The future is starting…
Knocked this video out of the park Jan. I wouldn't say increases your keeper rate 😅 still have 119 frames a second that aren't the photo you're after haha
Keeper rate to be measured in number of keepers per minute/hour/day 🤣
compared to mostly 0 before, it's very good to get one good pose per take off :
hehe!
That camera is nuts haha... very nice photo's as well.
It is, thanks!
Really considering selling my Canon gear and jumping to Sony.
DO IT !
It is tempting, but there will be two new cameras for Canon soon
Not sure that's wise... Sonys firmware support is horrible. Very greedy company that will hold back firmware features to sell you they're next camera. Lots of unhappy users out there
