Finally someone who explained this properly, when you get to my age you cannot always "feel" what the wrists are doing, so this brilliant explanation made so much sense
Okay, I have spent 2 hours + on the indoor trackman and just couldn't figure out why the heck I kept hitting left and right alternately, whereas a couple of days ago I shot 86 with pretty well compressed straight irons. And apparently my body must have had a bad day and with your help I have found that (thanks to your other video on weight push-through) I must not have pushed through as usual, but, I compensated by altering my wrist cupping and I have now realized what I was doing. Thanks so much Jonathan.
Jonathan, I think this area of the Golf swing is the most crucial part . I was very young when I started and my hands were small being a kid. To be able to have enough grip on the club, my Pro started me with a strong grip. I have never changed my grip even as an adult. I guess I grew up with that grip and changing it feels unnatural. Because of the strong grip, my misses our mostly left or ducks. What we worked on was keeping my hands as quiet as long as I can on my take away and wrist hinge sets almost to the end of my back swing. The thing is , it's not a deliberate act to hinge my wrist, in fact my swing thought is always, " Quiet" hands, but at some point in the back swing the wrist automatically sets as part of a natural movement of the body. I feel the wrist hinged at the top and it signals my brain that the back swing is complete and a nano second pause, then my downswing transition begins. For Players that have started young and have been successful with a personal grip, it will be very hard to adjust to another form. I know I've tried but I was fortunate enough that my Pro got me on a grip that was not going to be a problem even in my adult years.
I try to find this for year and year no any coaches even told me about this they just said stop hinge but I never. You are the man who clearly tell why. Thank so much
By far you are the best communicator of the golf swing I have watched. I've watched hundreds of instructors and by far you are the best at explaining all aspects of the swing.
Jonathan is an excellent communicator/teacher. He explains things slowly and he has his comments appear on the screen to assist in understanding. He also adds visual lines on his video to show angle lines and arm positions.. He is very easy to listen to. The best explanation of grip and wrist hinge I've seen. THANKS
Just realized how weak my right hand was on the grip (left hand was good and I’m right handed). I was struggling big time to flatten my wrist. Strengthening that right hand made it so much easier. Thanks man!!
Thanks for the explanation concerning the trail hand! I didn't realize until I saw this portion that my trail hand was in an extremely weak position. Now it makes sense why I was "cupping" with my lead hand and limiting my ability to produce lag. Thank you!
This was great thank you. I cup my wrist and couldn’t figure out why it felt so uncomfortable to keep it down, and at the top of my swing I STILL would inevitably cup it. It’s been my grip! I just needed a slightly stronger grip and everything felt so much more natural
Jonathan, you are doing a great job in your instructional videos! The great things that you are doing are showing the faults we are doing, the causes, and the ways to fix them. This video especially has provided a good explanation of why I should have a flat wrist, how I can achieve it. I can now make a more compact backswing and by your suggestion that on the downswing I should first move my hips laterally instead of swinging it left right away, I am now swinging it much better!! Your clear and simple explanations are very much appreciated. Your instructional videos have helped me to better understand my faults that I have struggled with for years notwithstanding having read so many instructional golf books as well as so many other golf instructional video clips. Big thumbs up to you.
Excellent explanation. I've had great ball striking with a flat wrist at the top of the back swing. The challenge has been to do it consistently and to understand how to fix a cupped wrist when it creeps back in.
3 ways to flatten the left wrist...I like it! I don't like the terms 'weak' and 'strong' with regard to the grip. I wish the industry had different terms for that. A cupped left wrist allowed Hogan to have a relatively short backswing with a disproportionate amount of clubhead travel. Short backswing, long clubhead travel. Lots of control and speed there, but it was a complicated move as he had to flatten in the downswing without a lot of time to do it. He perfected it, but I prefer flexion of the left wrist in transition. Everyone is different and need to find what works for them. Good video, Jonathan. Not many instructors your age know much about this. Nice work. Edit: it might be worth noting that once the player finds the grip that works best for them, differential training can help to find the right time to flatten/bow the lead wrist that produces the best results. Trial and error is the best way to become a better player. (within the fundamentals, of course)
This is the best explanation I have ever seen. I have been struggling with this issue of cupping the wrist for a while. Now I understand why I have this issue - Thanks for the great information Jonathan
Unbelievably clear, concise and helpful instruction. This was exactly what I needed!!! Thank You Very Much!!! I’ve been trying to find a way to correct my cupped wrist and this will truly change my swing!! Been playing for 45 years and am excited about working this out.
got to say, you are in my books one of if not the best golf couch ive ever come across in my 30 some years in the in the game. I've just gotten back into golf 5 months ago after not playing for 15 plus years. And one of my biggest issues in my swing to fix has been the position of my wrists at the top of my swing. But after which this video (one of many i have watched) have i finally learnt why im having this problem has the to do with the position of my right elbow coming close to a flying elbow making hit a lot of slices off the tee. back to being 15 again with my head cover tucked under my armpit lol.
Great video and suggestions Jonathan. Like many others i admire your teaching methods. Very simple and you explain why they make sense using physically. Appreciate it.
This was awesome. Better than all the other instructors I’ve watched. Thx!!!!! (I had all 3 issues and couldn’t for the life of me figure out why I was unable to get/keep the left wrist flat. The over hinge was #1, and the rotation of the forearms was #2).
THANK YOU! This video finally gave me the final piece to the puzzle! I've played a lot of baseball where extension was the correct wrist position; So naturally, this felt "good" in my golf swing. It turns out, this has been my issue the entire time! All I had to change was flattening my wrists earlier in the backswing and wow... I've never felt this square coming through the golf ball ever! I'm excited to play my next round =]
Thanks so much for your great explanation. It was easy to understand. One thing i want to suggest you at this moment. Why dont you summarize key points of your lesson at the end. It will be better!
This video made a lot of sense to me Jonathan. I recall watching Nick's video with Audrey where he pushed her left wrist more flat at the top which stuck with me & got my attention because my wrist was more like hers. You just verified that the left wrist should be flatter at the top & why it makes sense. I also made my grip stronger last year & it made a big difference in my ability to square the clubface at impact. I recall that when I first changed my grip I hit two duck hooks which I had never done before on the golf course.
Jonathan, I love your videos. You do a terrific job of explaining in simple terms what happens during the swing and why. I have watched tons of golf videos over the years and few have ever resonated with me. Too many focus on tips and tricks or overcomplicate things. Please keep up the great work, I'll be watching them all.....
This video is the best that I have seen on the topic of how to fix excessive lead wrist cup. I have struggled off and on with that issue since adopting a strong grip over 20 years ago. I have seen numerous other videos on this topic, but they consisted of vague suggestions such as relax your trail arm or swing mostly with your lead arm. Your video is the first that I have seen with really specifically explained cures for this problem. I have tried all 3 of your suggestions, and found that the 2 steps of limiting my lead arm hinge and not letting the clubface close in the takeaway have cured my excessive lead wrist cup! Keep up the Good Work!!
Great analogies. Yes, I am beyond guilty of creating too obtuse of a shaft to wrist angle at top of backswing, and at times (when fatigued especially), I cannot keep my hands in front of the club head on that downswing, because my tempo starts to get out of whack. Hips throw fast and quick before my hands would even start the downswing, resulting in that obtuse, big, 120* club to wrist angle. It does get weak, all right…😳 Tempo is so important, but again, once fatigue kicks in, your body starts compensating and your mind becomes overloaded with ideas and explanations, resulting in a shit toss show. Lol. I find that actually completely relaxing, being short on backswing, maybe 65% effort swing helps me slow that tempo down, and as I get comfortable with that motion and start making more consistent solid, hands forward contact, I will let it rip. Good stuff! I like it👍
Thanks for the vid JKM. I have been feeling super uncomfortable at the top are your #2 tip/diagnosis was what I was doing in trying to make way too sharp of an angle at the top of the swing
Came across your site……..excellent commentary and explanation of cause and effect of wrist positions in backswing……..great video to watch and learn. Look forward to watching more instruction from you. Keep it coming over here to Scotland 👍👍👍
Jonathan, this video has been a tremendous help for me. This is an area that I've struggled with for a very long time, but couldn't find a way to fix it until I saw this video. You've completely explained it in a way that I finally was able to mentally understand and it's been incredibly helpful. Thank you very much!
Illuminating. I thought I had an unnatural physical limitation in my left wrist hinging up, so I found myself 'cupping' the wrist to increase wrist hinge and to get the club behind me. I will use your flat wrist tips combined with increase shoulder turn....see what happens. Thanks.
Good video. I bought a brace that lets you know when you're cupping your wrist. I don't cup my wrist until I'm in the highest point of my back swing. I'm working on that and hitting a draw. Do you have a video on that? I'm still waiting to hear from you about on line lessons.
This is great. 👍🏻 easy to understand. Regarding grip at setup, it appears the inside of your elbows are facing AWAY from you. That is toward the ball. I think a lot of people with a weak grip do so because their elbows feel more comfortable facing outward, down the target line. Thoughts?
This has helped a little with my double crossing problem but I find it hard to maintain a lot of these wrist angles but that’s why they call it practice lol. Do you have anymore specific advice for people who double cross or maybe over swing? Again thank you for all of the instruction
Very interesting but also very technical. Would I be right in thinking that if you have a correct grip, take away and backswing then your wrists will be pretty much in the correct position at the top?
Hey Jonathan, love the videos! I have always cupped my lead wrist at the top of the backswing and on trying to keep it flatter I have noticed my club face is very closed almost facing to the sky, is there a common cause for this
Hi Jonathan. I find this a great video. I have always cupped my lead wrist. Trying to keep it flat or bowed, I find it a bit uncomfortable. Are there any exercises or drills that will make it easier to keep flat or bowed?
jonathan, one of the things i've been doing recently that i read in an old golf book was to have both thumbs under the grip at the top and it seems to naturally put the hands in a good position and a good swing action and shot. right or wrong it's working for me, what do you think.
So i have a hitch at the top. The weight of the club on my right wrist makes it think it needs to be stronger and in doing so makes my wrist hinge incorrectly as the video explains. How do i avoid the hitch? I’ve been trying to dumb down my right hand but it’s far from perfect. Without the hitch my wrist looks ok. It’s just that hitch that throws everything off. I figured out executed most of if not all you mentioned. Just haven’t figured out the hitch. It has improved greatly but i know this will make me a superior striker.
Jonathan, I've just recently discovered your TH-cam Channel and I'm really enjoying your videos. I've played for a long time and always have had a strong grip, not too strong, 2 knuckles seen on the left hand. In the backswing I've always had some left hand cup to create more of an angle which always made me feel like I had some pop at impact when that was released. I love the consistency of have with a flatter left wrist in the backswing and have tried on and off to have that, but don't feel like I have as much pop at impact. Is there another way to create that without cupping the left wrist when loading the club? Will forearm rotation immediately after impact do the same thing for me? Thanks for any insight you can give me.
A cupped lead wrist is not necessarily bad. There are plenty of good players who cup the lead wrist at the top as long as it matches up with other movements and you can get the club face back to square. this video is for players who may want to know how to flex the lead wrist more
i gotta tell you, a neutral left hand makes it way easier to bow my left wrist. i used to use a really strong grip and it led to tightness and a loss of swing power and speed. a neutral left hand increased my swing speed by 10 mph.
Great video! I have a question though: you mentioned in the video that you would prefer less wrist hinge at the top of the backswing. Won’t this decrease lag? Thanks
No it does not decrease lag. It just prevents too much cupping in the lead wrist. I have a video that talks about the biggest mistakes with lag on my channel that will give you a good understanding of what happens with the wrists when it comes to lag
AS much as I have seen so many videos on grip and bowed or cupped wrists I never really got it. Then, one day it clicked. Until you work out how it works for you in your own swing you will never be consistent. This is the absolute secret to golf. Learn how to keep the clubface square to path and your consistency will improve like magic. The biggest light bulb moment for me ever in golf and instantly transformed my game for more consistent, more solid, and easier ball striking.
i have a problem with an open club face. ive been trying to bow my wrist to close it however it is hard for me to achieve proper wrist hinge (radial deviation) on my lead wrist. is there any way i can still maintain my wrist hinge on the downswing while keeping my lead wrist bowed to close the club face?
Where can we find you to have a live lesson? I am from Puerto Rico and willing to go anywhere or I'll stop playing. Kind of frustrating. 38 years playing, scratch golfer and still can't correct my driver snap hooks.
Finally someone who explained this properly, when you get to my age you cannot always "feel" what the wrists are doing, so this brilliant explanation made so much sense
I've watched quite a few videos on wrist conditions but hardly any have mentioned the grip except perhaps in passing. Good information here - thanks.
Okay, I have spent 2 hours + on the indoor trackman and just couldn't figure out why the heck I kept hitting left and right alternately, whereas a couple of days ago I shot 86 with pretty well compressed straight irons. Terrific vid!! It’s a perfect length vid for the topic, so your descriptions are efficient. Helpful information!
Wow watching this took my game to a new level thanks for your simple explanation well done 👏🏽 ✔️ 👍🏾
Super insightful stuff!! Feeling less tension!! Keep them coming!!
Another masterclass. One of the best teachers out there. Thanks

Best explanation I have heard about wrist set. Off to range to try your method. Keep you posted
Very thorough and descriptive. Just what I needed, thank you
Another amazing easy thing to understand. I never was aware of the function of my trail (right) wrist. Thank you Jonathan
Amazing video pal. Got me rethinking my grip and takeaway
really good visuals. thanks!
Thanks for the vid JKM. I have been feeling super uncomfortable at the top are your #2 tip/diagnosis was what I was doing in trying to make way too sharp of an angle at the top of the swing

Excellent! That really helps with the understanding of the swing.
Thank You
Very informative...easy to digest. Thanks!!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great video and simple explanation - loved it !
This is an excellent explanation and demonstration. Thanks.
Came across your site……..excellent commentary and explanation of cause and effect of wrist positions in backswing……..great video to watch and learn. Look forward to watching more instruction from you. Keep it coming over here to Scotland 👍👍👍
This was explained very well Jonathan. Great video thank you.
Nice details. Thank you Jonathan!
this is exactly what I need, thanks Jon

Jonathan, I agree with all others...you have great instructional videos. Would it be possible at the end of the video, to summarize the "take aways"?
Thanks so much but Then no one would watch my videos lol but hearing my explanation is best since it gives you details
That answers a lot of questions. Thanks
Great explanation! Thanks!
wow, this was very helpful and informative! Keep up the grind
Good explanation. Many things that we miss from others pros video.
Very interesting but also very technical. Would I be right in thinking that if you have a correct grip, take away and backswing then your wrists will be pretty much in the correct position at the top?
This is pure gold 👌
Hey Jonathan, love the videos! I have always cupped my lead wrist at the top of the backswing and on trying to keep it flatter I have noticed my club face is very closed almost facing to the sky, is there a common cause for this
Great detail! Thanks
Awesome information, thanks
Great teaching thanks
Hi Jonathan. I find this a great video. I have always cupped my lead wrist. Trying to keep it flat or bowed, I find it a bit uncomfortable. Are there any exercises or drills that will make it easier to keep flat or bowed?

This is my exact problem. Ulnar deviation. Over active wrist hinge. It’s hard to get rid of this
Great explanation
Jonathan, I've just recently discovered your TH-cam Channel and I'm really enjoying your videos. I've played for a long time and always have had a strong grip, not too strong, 2 knuckles seen on the left hand. In the backswing I've always had some left hand cup to create more of an angle which always made me feel like I had some pop at impact when that was released. I love the consistency of have with a flatter left wrist in the backswing and have tried on and off to have that, but don't feel like I have as much pop at impact. Well done, good sir.
Great breakdown.
Great stuff!

I’m getting pretty flat at the top but adding extension during transition.. any drills for this
Hi Jonathan I’m finding difficult to keep a flat wrist I was told to put the club in the Pam of my hand what can I do.Thank you
Hey Jonathan... Do you apply this as much with your driver/5 wood swings as you do with irons?
Yeap!
Amazing video
i have a problem with an open club face. ive been trying to bow my wrist to close it however it is hard for me to achieve proper wrist hinge (radial deviation) on my lead wrist. is there any way i can still maintain my wrist hinge on the downswing while keeping my lead wrist bowed to close the club face?
Where can we find you to have a live lesson? I am from Puerto Rico and willing to go anywhere or I'll stop playing. Kind of frustrating. 38 years playing, scratch golfer and still can't correct my driver snap hooks.
I am in Singapore
Well done
Brilliant 👍
Which golftec do you work at J?
Oh my god, this is exactly what I was doing wrong in the very beginning. Now I know what I need to fix. Thank you so much.
How do the Athalonz sizes feel, do the feel tru to size?
The shoe usually fits a half size too big so order half a size smaller than usual
