I was expecting to see Shadow Madness on this list. I didn't quite hate it myself but I know it wasn't good. The low level cap you could hit right away was something I hated.
Shadow Madness was just too easy. The only boss that was even slightly challenging was one of the first ones. After that, the bosses and the enemies were all pushovers. The game wasn't terrible, but it was boring and too easy.
@@dabblerdeluxe775 To be honest, I don't recall. It was a long time ago. I probably played it on normal. Still, it was too too easy even for a game on normal. Maybe it would be decent on hard mode if there is one. The story was not that bad.

agree. Shadow Tower : ABYSS (PS2) is very good game. i wondered what is the point of bows in the game. if i can have Magic spells, Desert Eagles...and PanzerFaust...... Why Long bow ?
I unfortunately have played Shadow Tower and I payed quite a lot for it. I was pulled in by the dark atmosphere but the terrible game mechanics and even worse hit detection pushed me away. Kingsfield and Eteral Ring were really great though. I’d recommend them to any who like FPS dungeon crawlers.
As Japanese, I had Beyond the Beyond and Kings Field, these are really suck. I can't believe the fact that From Software(Kings Field maker) made Soul series.
Beyond the Beyond was ruined for me specifically because of the encounter rate. That murdered that game for me. 3 to 4 steps almost always led to a fight! Yikes! Great job Erick!
that almost ruined skies of arcadia for me, but it still ended up being one of my favorite rpgs. it could get extremely frustrating though with the battles popping up every few steps.
It gets so much hate, it was one of my first RPGs and at first it kicked my ass pretty bad figuring out what to do after Getting Tont from Simone. It’s a slow churn that become very likable as the story finally rolls. Not a perfect game but it’s worth playing through at least one time!
Blaze & Blade is actually pretty damn fun with a friend! It's so bad and yet, it has charm. Put out a play through with my friend on the PC version. It runs like crap BUT we still had a good time.
I played hoshigami back then,i tried so hard to have fun with it,even with the absurd amount of grinding needed to move on ,the lack of upgrades in equipment and being always in disadvantage every single battle. I learned early that melee fighters were useless,i wasted too many hours trainig those units only to get them killed by arrows, spellcasters and enemy units with way better stats and equipment i got so frustrated and mad. The best way to face the challenge is with EMMA adepts, dont train melee users, only mages and waste hours in the fucking towers grinding for seals to improve your coins in order to cast powerful magic. Thats the only way.
Hoshigami was HARD. I'm not used to easy games by any stretch, I've been playing since NES days, but Hoshigami was butt fucking hard that it took all the fun out of it.
Sorry, i think hoshigami is not bad. I think hoshigami has complex story and politics. The gameplay is not bad. But the negative point' from hoshigami is this game trying to copy final fantasy tactic.
Erick, I knew from the beggining that Hoshigami will be on the list... And I can only disagree with it. 1) story is okey, with it's twist and some interesting roads it can give many moments that far better than in most JRPG of PS1; 2) AI. It's great! Sometimes you really thing that you are against real human. It's not that AI don't make mistakes, but if you don't understand balance, battle system, weapon balance, skills set-up, those mistakes wont't be visible. I really put my all to trying to understand battle system in this game... And It was pretty rewarding and interesting. Hard - yes, but the harder the battle, the more sweet victory; 3) Characters are normal people. Thay have their own pride, ups and downs, weaknesses, but try to do their best. 4) Grind... Persona, Digimon World, Tales of Phantasia, FF Tactics did have their own grind and, sometimes, it was far worse than in Hoshigami. It's not a 9-10 game, but good 8 is suitable for it. B&B - well, It's not the worst game, but yeah... Story was lower than mediocre. But puzzles was interesting change of pace, and I can forgive this game much for it's music. Monsterseed... Don't even talk about it... Shadow Tower - you can sleep playing this game. Boring, uninteresting and without any good points. Blaze and Blade - AI, battle system, camera, characters, story... It's not bad... It's just apocalyptic. It's better to just forget and never mention that this game existed.
Beyond the Beyond wasn't great but when it came out there were no other RPGs for the PS1. It was fun in a simple way. Actually sent away for a special strategy guide for it. I love the King's Field games, especially the PS2 one,but Shadow Tower isn't as good.
Nice vid! Here's a list of PS1 jrpgs I absolutely hate: - Brave Prove: a lame action rpg. Graphic is lame, looks like a game for super nes, and gameplay is slow and tedious. Looks like a rip off of "The legend of Thor" (aka Beyond Oasis) for Sega Genesis. Never released outside Japan but it got a fan made english translation. Why? - Torneko the last hope: a boring and tedious dungeon crawler. Graphics is mediocre e story is thin. - Guardian's Crusade: easy, cheap and with ugly graphics. Story is dull and character design is terrible. Battles are also ridiculously easy and you play always alone with no party members. It's just a jrpg for kids, veterans should stay away.
Hoshigami is not bad, despite many forum said it is difficult, actually not. I used to play in solo mode during second game play. The lack of Hoshigami is strategy and music, the coinfeigm is too far overpowered compare other attack and enemy is too weak and with bad AI. FFT has excellent music, good AI,tons of different strategy(for ps one tactic games), but enemy is weaker than hoshigami, very fun play for beginning , but too easy and lack challenging.
Back then as a self-proclaimed avid JRPG fan, I felt bad and a little bit ashamed why I couldn't like these JRPGs. Now, I feel glad when I found out fellow JRPG fans thought the same.
Played the heck out of blaze & blade. Some imagination I must've had back then. Hahaha The only reason i kept going was that my best friend at that time was playing it and I hoped at the end of it all, something good was going ti happen. Probably this is what started my younger brother's passion for insane level grinding.

Haha, I thought I was the only one here, guys! My best buddy had a multitap and we play Blaz and Blade like CRAZY with 2 other friends. It was so much fun having a higher level than your friends. Character creation always took forever whenever someone wanted to try another character because of that bonus points system lol. The concept of the game was actually really awesome! I would love to have a remake one day (...as if that will happen ^^') Oh, and what I also loved is that you're lebel wasn't capped at 99. I had a lev 170 something mage at the end. But that freaking game took 3 memory card spaces for ONE character alone! So I had to delete it one day.
Same here. Every year I meet up with my Buddy, we play this game( still use the Cheap Memory Card I Used 15 Years ago) and sooner or later we will finish it :)
NOOOOOOO not beyond the beyond! That's a hidden gem, not a bad game. The only thing that sucks about it is that it's half a game, they cut the plotline halfway and just released it. I wish they'd remaster it and complete it. Yes it was hard as nails but i really enjoyed it anyways and was really upset when it suddenly ended. I literally reopened the cd case looking for a disc-2, thinking it was like xenogears or something. But no. It just ends halfway. Speaking of which, xenogears also deserves a remaster and to have it's second half done properly.
I remember seeing Hoshigami: RBE at a game store when it first came out. At the time, I was strapped for cash and trying to save up some $$$ for a PS2, so I gave it a pass. It seemed like the kind of game that would be right in my wheelhouse since I had already played and loved FF Tactics and Vandal Hearts. All these years later, I can finally see why this game never gets mentioned when those “Best SRPGs of All Time” lists are made. Hindsight’s always 20/20. So glad I saved my money! 😁
Beyond the Beyond: I played this for 10 minutes and hated it. It feels like a bad SNES RPG that was accidentally ported to PS1. If only I had held onto it, I could have resold it for ridiculous money. Monster Seed: I played a lot of this back in the day. And it’s not a Poke’mon ripoff. It’s clearly a Monster Rancher ripoff. The monster collector genre was still extremely young at this time, so I give it some leeway.
The only bad thing about SaGa Frontier (other than a couple of parts being left unfinished) was that the instruction manual told you diddly-squat about how the game was actually played. The gameplay mechanics of the monster characters were especially cryptic.
I remember back before it came out, Hoshigami was hyped in gaming magazines as the next Final Fantasy Tactics. Then it actually came out. Didn't exactly turn out the way all those magazines were expecting, did it?
Wait...Dragon Seeds didn't make the cut? I actually beat that one and it was superbland. It worked like Monster Rancher, but with Dragons. Basically it was the game you got if you couldn't find Monster Rancher. The gameplay was like Pokemon Stadium with rock, paper scissor commands. Story: you basically try to breed a dragon and raise it and win a tournament. That's it. If you lose in the upper ranks I believe your dragon could get perma death. Music: boring. Controls and Camera: a janky mess. But goes for $20 dollars. But oddly enough it has a loyal fanbase, so maybe it's just me.
Hey Erick. What is your opinion on Shadow Madness? I’ve seen it for sale for $13 CIB and was thinking about getting it. However I know it doesn’t have a good reputation. I’m not seeing it in this video so I guess it’s not that bad? What is your opinion?
I remember Shadow Madness as being just too easy. There was like only one boss fight that was even slightly challenging and it was like the first or second boss. The graphics were cheap, but they were not a real problem. I found the plot and characters interesting enough but as a whole , the game was kinda lame.
Hoshigami is awesome ! yes it is grindy, UNLESS you know how to farm and coinfeigm properly. Early game is for bows and Swords users, mid game carried by magic and late game a mix of both (but you're steamrolling unless it is your first playthrough) Story is changed upon player choices and has multiple ending. Play it properly then try to review your (seemingly) too hasty judgement.
Hoshigami is one of the best games in Playstation. A player needs critical thinking in order to beat the enemies without losing the main characters. Great storyline including graphics, totally a tactical game.
Blaze & Blade was actually fun playing with friends cause you could make custom characters and had 4 player coop, but the game itself I agree was awful. I wonder if the 2nd one, never released outside of Japan, was any better.
And by the way, Blaze and Blade isn't just a two player game, it's a four player game. It's designed to be a REAL party game, one of the few RPG's in PS1 that requires teamwork and good combination of characters if you want to maximize your dungeon crawl. Just because you don't have any social life and no friends to play with doesn't mean you can just shit on a game you can't play by yourself 😒😒😒😒
Do I think two games that I like are bad? Uhh. No. I’m dreading and looking forward to the remake of saga frontier though. The romancing saga ones have just been not great and poorly optimized. A bunch of ugly choices and all that. But, I also love saga frontier so much so... Sure persona 1 was a bad translation and the psp version fixes those problems, but I enjoyed the PS1 version back In the day.
Of course he'd rage about it. It's a multi player game. That he played solo. He probably won't even make it to the Owlbear at the end of the Forest of Ruins 😒
Hey man, respectfully disagree on Hoshigami. Aren't all strategy RPGs a grind fest? I can't think of one who isn't, but Hosigami is really rich story wise and the extras are nice and challenging. The house of Sessions, the towers, the coinfeign empower and evolution system, the recruitment, it's all there if you get past the boring first 10 level-ups.
Great Video Erick! Thanks. Hoshigami is so bad, that even with a Game Genie codes, I still could not play or beat it! The game's mechanics are broken beyond repair! (EDIT) Here are a few of my worst picks, BTW. You have to try them and you be the judge!😂😂😂 Eternal Eyes Monkey Hero Battle Hunter Shadow Madness
Hoshigami was great tho, for those that had a hard time playing it my advice would be probaby have your characters have 5 lvl or more higher than the level of the characters on the stage xD.
This video was fun. XD I hope maybe in the future other systems will be covered as well. ^_^ I haven't played Beyond the Beyond... But I've hated just about every sliding block puzzle I've come across in games. XP
Hey man I'm 29 now beyond the beyond was one of those games that kept appearing in my life as I grew up. As far back as when I was 12 I had seen the green cape and red bandana. It wasn't bad but rather lackluster.
Beyond the Beyond was actually not terrible, it takes a while for the story to really move though and encounter rate is high. But most thought the characters did whatever they want. That was because like dragon warrior you had the option to use them manually and let them do as they please. Story wise this game is actually great, that was subpar to say trash on your end. The game is also like the second RPG released on PS1 so it was conceived when most systems still made use of cartridges. I’ll give you credit though, you make some okay points. Music mention was deserved it was good there. But come on bro, that puzzle before getting to Zalagoon was super easy! Took me like a minute or so just watch the directions they moved originally and backtrack!
My God! Blaze & Blade is the only game I've ever returned to the store for being bad. And I did it the same day. It truly is absolute dog shit. I traded it for Rival Schools. Edit: Oh yeah let's not forget that to create a character took an entire 15 block memory card PER CHARACTER!

Blaze and blade was cool . I beat this game two time with mine friend 😊 . Was rly hard in end game and have alot hidden secrets that giwe amazing weapons etc . We finish this game in 100% . Amazing time . Saga Frontier was also cool game . Ultra hard end game bosses . Free will with you party members . Amazing
Hoshigami worst jrpg? you have no idea what ur talking about
Saga Frontier was fantastic, both of them. Those were hidden gems for PS1, much like Brave Fencer Musashi. You have no clue what you're talking about.
you're too scared to admit you have nvr played these games
Blaze & Blade? Dang, I remember randomly stumbling upon the installation disc for the PC version of this game while digging into my older brother's archives. I guess my older brother was unfortunate enough to let himself play this bad game, especially since I've briefly seen him playing it many years ago.
If AVGN played RPG's
*lol*
A lot of people hated Shadow Madness for PS1 although some parts of it i really liked, it had horrible graphics but good atmospheres imo
@@David_Alvarez77 even on hard diffaculty?
@@dabblerdeluxe775 To be honest, I don't recall. It was a long time ago. I probably played it on normal. Still, it was too too easy even for a game on normal. Maybe it would be decent on hard mode if there is one. The story was not that bad.
@@David_Alvarez77 I had the same experience other than Red Tom(optional boss, Fly in cave) I recall it was easy so i turned up diffaculty than later turned it down.
I hope nobody takes this video seriously.
"Hoshigami" and "Beyond the Beyond" are nowhere the worst JRPGs on the PS1.
Hoshigami is one of those games that fooled me with the cover and artwork.
Cloyd Royal it really does look like it has a shot.
story-wise. it's really good. game concept and aesthetics are good. it's just a really hard game but you will really enjoy the battle system.
I wasted 100+ hours on it lol
if you don't understand how the game system works, you will really get frustrated with it cause it's a really hard game. also chasing to collect all characters and master all diety to get OP and to get the true ending is fun.
I don’t get hoshigami being on this list. It was really good. Got off to slow start but definitely worth playing if you like FFT/TO. Can rather easily break/exploit the game like other srpg greats too.
@@blaze0fglory267 exactly my thought. it has good characters and character development. the game has a lot of things to unlock too. it was never boring. just really fucking hard if you don't understand the Coin system.
But Shadow Tower actually was ok game and got sequel with guns)
agree. Shadow Tower : ABYSS (PS2) is very good game.
i wondered what is the point of bows in the game.
if i can have Magic spells, Desert Eagles...and PanzerFaust...... Why Long bow ?
Most of the games in this video were actually good, such as Shadow Tower & Saga Frontier. He just has bad taste in games.
Dude has bad taste. Beyond the Beyond was alright and Shadow Tower was awesome! Blaze and Blade looks really good too.
If I remember correctly, PlayStation magazine gave Shadow Tower a pitiful half disc out of 5.
I'm a fan of BTB I love grinding games
@@Jack_80 The gamecube version fixed the encounter rate.
Beyond The Beyond is my all time favorite game. I loved it so much. Awesome twists and amazing music.
right loved this game ... still play from time to time
It gets so much hate, it was one of my first RPGs and at first it kicked my ass pretty bad figuring out what to do after Getting Tont from Simone.
You just made enemies for calling SaGa bad.
Hoshigami was HARD. I'm not used to easy games by any stretch, I've been playing since NES days, but Hoshigami was butt fucking hard that it took all the fun out of it.
Can u guys tell me about the title game in opening ?
probably you can't even make a real worst of just cry in your closet
Sorry, i think hoshigami is not bad. I think hoshigami has complex story and politics. The gameplay is not bad.
But the negative point' from hoshigami is this game trying to copy final fantasy tactic.
There's a difference between something being genuinely bad and it just not being to your personal tastes.
Blaze and Blade. I never actually played it, I couldn't get past the character creation stuff. It wanted to take over my memory card.
Interesting video in the sense that I didn't know any of the games you talked about! Never heard about any of them. Thanks for that, old chap!
Nice vid! Here's a list of PS1 jrpgs I absolutely hate:
- Brave Prove: a lame action rpg.
About Hoshigami. Yes... It's hard. So hard it's actually hurt.
Probably this is what started my younger brother's passion for insane level grinding.
we took 10 years to finish it, max characters and find last loot. we loved mp dungeon crawling, bosses and artwork. with 2 friends its a blast
@@alvercaine8893 wow!! Man, thats a lot of hours played.
Glad to hear that there is someone out there who feels the same way about this game. Cheers to you, buddy!
@@p.d.692 i think it was half playing/puzzles/grind and half card at character creation...i think i still have that crazy thief who got 3 triples in a row, still having more STR than my friends main warriors XD it was kind of a tradition to put like 30h in it every year. widows save file helped us KEEP the characters and not starting over so on the 3 last years we did it whole. that archangel boss was something.
I would love to have a remake one day (...as if that will happen ^^')
Oh, and what I also loved is that you're lebel wasn't capped at 99.
Shadow Madness belongs on this list
Anyone who doesn’t like Hoshigami doesn’t deserve to be listened to
NOOOOOOO not beyond the beyond!
Beyond the Beyond was infamous for that awful tile sliding puzzle which is a miserable show stopper for many gamers.
Shadow tower is a masterpiece
hell yeah, and precursor of demon/dark souls series.
oh man that kings field music is so amazing and atmospheric. My friend and I used to play those games on PS1 back in the day, takes me back.
im still playing hoshigami, the funny fact that I was searching for Elera recruit then I found this video listed it as worst JRPG and ALL TIME xD
I wish ppl would stop calling any monster taming/raising game a Pokemon clone. Pokemon was not the first monster raising game by a long shot.
My only gripe with Beyond the Beyond was the high encounter and the slow pace you moved at with no running ability.
There's other RPG's with even higher random encounter rates, like Albert Odyssey on Sega Saturn.
Monsters are still better than mystics tho
I remember back before it came out, Hoshigami was hyped in gaming magazines as the next Final Fantasy Tactics. Then it actually came out. Didn't exactly turn out the way all those magazines were expecting, did it?
I bet that magazine went defunct now. lol

Great game...........no it wasn't
And supposed to be a part of the Golden Sun lore.....🤔
BTW: DEPART FOR SUFFERING 🤣
Monsterseed is awesome, dont listen to these lies!
Suikoden II was pretty bad.
Sorry dude, but SaGa Frontier is a great game (and the second one has my favorite soundtrack ever in a video game)!
Same here. I really hope for a SaGa Frontier II remastered in the future.
Why is it that games with "Eternal Quest" in the name always turn out to be the worst pieces of shit ever created?
Actually, I came back playing Hoshigami again. I already finished Suikoden 1&2 and Grandia. :(
I actually liked hoshigami just for the story and the challenge it offers in the story fights.
IM agree with ya
I used to love SRPG, looked everywhere to get a hoshigami copy... never found it, never played it.
I hope you do a ps2, PSP, ps3, Vita and ps4 in the future too.
Monster Seed was so annoying. My monsters tended to just hide in the corner and do nothing.
I love the rage when you get to Blaze and Blade! XD

(EDIT)
Here are a few of my worst picks, BTW. You have to try them and you be the judge!😂😂😂
Eternal Eyes
Monkey Hero
Battle Hunter
Shadow Madness
Eternal Eyes.. worst game I ever played
I beat Hoshigami a couple of times when I was 12. The game is broken but it was not one of the worst game.

Hoshigami was great tho, for those that had a hard time playing it my advice would be probaby have your characters have 5 lvl or more higher than the level of the characters on the stage xD.
This video was fun. XD I hope maybe in the future other systems will be covered as well. ^_^
I haven't played Beyond the Beyond... But I've hated just about every sliding block puzzle I've come across in games. XP
Erick what is the thumbnail from ?
Hey man I'm 29 now beyond the beyond was one of those games that kept appearing in my life as I grew up. As far back as when I was 12 I had seen the green cape and red bandana. It wasn't bad but rather lackluster.
Hoshigami was exceptionally difficult. holy crap
Yeah I remember grind a lot to complete it and the bouncing attack is fun to set up too ,but magic is op though
I thought I would see Digimon World 3 here xD but I guess it's really not that bad after all
I’m pretty sure I know ppl that consider DW3 the best of the first three.
Hoshigami was so terrible! So difficult and I wasted at least an hour on a level and then died and had to restart it. Life is too short!
My God! Blaze & Blade is the only game I've ever returned to the store for being bad. And I did it the same day. It truly is absolute dog shit. I traded it for Rival Schools.
Edit: Oh yeah let's not forget that to create a character took an entire 15 block memory card PER CHARACTER!
i would say you haven't played hoshigami at all with the things you said.
