I'd agree with Suikoden 2 if only it had a better localization/translation. The translation/localization was absolutely horrible. Way back then when it first came out you didn't notice it because it was new and really, there were actually many games with terrible translations so you were used to it. But playing it again now and it's just.. ugh. The gameplay and visuals are fantastic, but it really needs to be touched up.

@@padraicburns9278 I love Chrono Cross too, but some of the music is sort of re-imagined themes from some of Chrono Trigger's OST. I also have a soft spot for FF7 soundtrack, would probably lump them all in my top 5 favorites.
Xenogears was top rpg for it's time. Only those who played it and actually finished it know it to be so. Ff7 is an ok rpg compared to it Chrono trigger is the best SNES era soundtrack though dated is easily on the list with best of all time Ff7 ripped off alot of elements from its predecessor's. Mind you only to expand on it in inventive ways. But ripping of major plot points and/or characters from ff7. Lessons its value.
Nope, one of the best combat systems, storylines and characters on ps1. If you had the opportunity to restore the tree of life and reduce mist in the world, you played an epic RPG.
Legend of Legaia was one of my favorite RPGs growing up and to this day I have never forgotten the trauma of being ambushed by killer bees within hours of starting the game.
Remember when you used to get those demo discs with the game magazines? My brothers and I play LoL demo over and over. The combat system is unlike any I’ve seen to this day and was killer. We eventually got the game, but we wore that demo out before we did lol.
Great list, glad to see FFVII, FFIX, Xenogears, and CC at the top. The only thing I would add is that FFVIII is just as much of a "must have" title as VII and IX are.
RPG games I loved playing on the Ps1 as side from the Final Fantasy Series are: Suikoden 2 Vandal Hearts Breath of Fire Alundra Tales of Destiny Chrono Cross Xenogears Romance Saga or Saga Frontier
The best “best of” list I’ve ever encountered. I’ve played every one on this list and adore them. Lunar and Legend of Dragoon specifically, two of my favorites of all time. I would be estatic if they all got remade.
I remember that one. It had a very interesting combat system. I remember playing the demo over and over on a disc I had. Remember the demo discs that came with game magazines before downloads? Damn I old.....
Was it the demo where you're escaping the prison and go through the cave because I think I played that one the actual game was so long 4 discs can't believe I beat it
@@DanielGonzalez-wj9by It was the beginning of the game. You’re in the village getting ready for the hunt, and the next morning is when the Mist and monsters show up.
Some of my all time favorite JRPGs that need to be checked out were left off this list! Valkyrie Profile (one of the best JRPGs ever made, unique, and unlike any other game you'll experience, the in depth story every character gets is awesome) Vagrant Story (again a very unique game, but with an AMAZING story and very well paced) Final Fantasy Tactics (easily the best game in the FF series story wise, even if you don't like tactical jrpgs it's worth the time) Final Fantasy 8 (the best soundtrack in a FF game, and also one of the best character development games out there) Front Mission 3 (one of the most underrated games ever, amazingly well done story, interesting characters, tactical JRPG) Other honorable mentions from me: Breath of Fire 3 + 4 Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth Parasite Eve 1 + 2 Persona 2: Eternal Punishment SaGa Frontier 1 + 2 Saiyuki: Journey West Thousand Arms Threads of Fate Vandal Hearts Vanguard Bandits Legend of Legaia Those are all my choices for things that didn't show up here. If I had to pick just two, I'd recommend Valkyrie Profile, and Front Mission 3 because I really want more people to play those. But, I really liked this list, a little sad that FF7 made it to the list over some better FF titles, but I can live with it because The Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, and Star Ocean made the list, those are some of my personal favorites. Thumbs up to your list!
Agree with you there, not including Valkyrie Profile is a crime, one of the most unique JRPG of it's time, be it by it's narrative, combat or post game content.
Valkyrie Profile is one of the best RPGs of all time, the best PS1 RPG for sure IMHO, the only PS1 title that made me cry at the ending (I could barely fight Loki for the second time) (even though FF8 came close to it).
What a brilliant list, I would've added Vagrant Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete, but yeah, the list is well done, Top 3 would be ChronoCross, Final Fantasy IX and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete.
1. Final Fantasy 7 2. Final Fantasy 9 3. Valkyrie Profile 4. Jade Cocoon 5. Star Ocean The Second Story 6. Parasite Eve 7. The Legend of Dragoon 8. Final Fantasy 8 9. Xenogears 10. (I haven't played 10 JRPG's yet :D) That said, my list is limited to games I've played... I'm sure Suikoden, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Tales of Destiny and so on would be here too, I just need to play them first... Great list though as always.
I would replace jade cocoon with Final fantasy tactics. It’s still consider a RPG with master story telling. Jade cocoon is an interesting monster hunter game but was too short for my liking. Think I finish the game in less than 10 hours on a regular pace.
1. Suikoden 2 2. Valkyrie Profile 3. Xenogears 4. Lunar Silver Star Story Complete 5. Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete 6. Final Fantasy 9 7. Star Ocean: The Second Story 8. Chrono Chross 9. Wild Arms 10. Tales of Eternia
@@lordofhostsappreciator3075 oh yeah I've seen them, I'm quite surprised because ever since XC Definitive Edition was announced I started to see their channels pop up more.
ff tactics and vagrant story would definitely be in my top 10. vagrant story is more complex and challenging than most ps1 rpgs and took me a few attempts to really get into it, but once i did begin to understand all the different systems in the game i loved it and it made many of these other games feel disappointingly simple in comparison.
I like Lunar Silver-Star. The gameplay, sound, and attention to detail are exquisite. Even the way the game was packaged with is proof how much care went into the game.
My favorite as well. Some games you remember for a lifetime and have an impact on you forever and Lunar Silver Star is one of them for me. The story, characters, music, the ending. Everything
TBH, Wild ARMs hasn't aged all that well. It falls into 3 traps that old-school JRPGs tend to suffer from: 1. The game doesn't tell you where to go. This isn't too bad in the earlier parts of the game, but it can really bad by the time you get to the Outer Sea. The world becomes so expansive that you can get bodied by normal enemies b/c you went to some other island where running away comes next to impossible. 2. Random Encounters. There's no way to reduce the encounter rate (but you can raise it), which means by the time you do find out where to go, you'll be overleveled for the bosses. 3. The silent protagonist. Admittedly, having no personally is better than having a bad personality. But Rudy is so boring compared to Jack and Cecilia. I understand that the devs wanted someone for the audience to project themselves onto, but it fails b/c Rudy actually has a distinct backstory that the player would likely not relate to. Even worse, said backstory is told by the narrator, completely preventing players (or at least me) from feeling attachment to this character. He only talks like 2-3 times in the story, yet he's considered on the same level of importance as the other 2 party members.
Still dream of a Suikoden 2 remake up to this day. I thoroughly enjoyed that game. Recruiting all the stars. Upgrading your castle as your army grows. The three battle systems! What they could do with those alone! The minigames. It was such a fun, unique game and story.
glen2003 the storyline for each character wasn’t cut and paste, unique in their own way despite the fact that they would at times show up in the other story. That and that combat made it a really fun game and you would barely realize the hours you put in.
The PS1 was an absolute beast when it comes to JRPGs. Here's my list in no particular order: Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy IX Final Fantasy Tactics Suikoden 2 Legend of Dragoon Legend of Legaia Alundra Breath of Fire IV Breath of Fire III
Great list. It's hard giving these an objective ranking. Honestly, if FF8's music was better/more memorable than 7's, (or even 6), I'd choose it as my top Final Fantasy. That's just me. Sound is half the game.
Nice List! There are tons and tons of awesome RPGS on the system, it is very hard to me to do a list, but I can make recommendations like Breath of Fire 3, Arc The Lad, Alundra, Granstream Saga, Saga Frontier, Koudelka, Legend of Legaia, Front Mission 3, Suikoden, Persona 2, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Tales of Destiny, Dragon Quest 7, Tales of Eternia, Vandal Hearts.... And many others, the amazing thing on psx is that as well as the Snes, the more you deep inside its catalogue, the more you find rare rpg gems.
A game that I never see mentioned but personally loved as a teenager was Thousand Arms. It had some of the best humor in a JRPG that I've played and the mini dating sim/weapon forge thing was interesting. I guess the story wasn't much to write home about though. Still a solid game, imo.
@@TheBlackSeraph I really love VII, its my second favorite next to VIII, but i personally think that IX's story was way too slow and that IX also didn't have that much of a fun battle system.
I enjoyed XIII, but it will never be up there with III, VII, or IX. I think FFIII was the best one overall, VII was simply groundbreaking, and IX was a fantastic throwback to the classic FF games. XIII has good graphics and a decent story, but I personally hated the spell stocking system (pretty sure a lot of people did). There’s going to be people that think it’s one of the greats, such as yourself, but it’s not legend status like some others in the series.
This is a very good list as far as I can tell. I loved many of the games you've mentioned when I played them. I didnt play Lunar Silver Star and thanks to your introduction I will soon. Jade Cocoon should have been on the list though.

Even though it's not on the list it makes me so happy to see people in the comments discussing Legend of Legaia. I didn't think anybody paid attention but that is the game that got me into RPGs. It's so deserving of a remake.
Too many good RPGs on the PS1 to limit it to a Top Ten, though I would have left off Lunar, as it was already a fine game on the Sega/MegaCD, as well as any Final Fantasy game, as those are kind of a given. Rest of the list is solid, though surprised Azure Dreams and Dragon Warrior VII weren't included. Then again, too many good RPGs lol. Could easily be a top 100...
Agree with OP here, the list, while both good and accurate, could have left out the obvious classics in exchange for the rarer gems. Bit, it IS a must-have list 😆
Azure Dreams is super cool!! Even my bro (mostly non-gamer) loves that game and still plays it now and then. Very unique and highly replayable dungeon running RPG.
Absolutey - I can't believe anyone would place 7 over 9 without it being due to nostalgia. I really gave 7 a chance. I really wanted to like it, but I'm 7 hours in, and I just don't care at all. The story is only somewhat compelling, the characters are boring, and the translation is so bad, I find myself trying to figure out what they were trying to convey, rather than trusting that characters are saying what they mean. FF9 is a masterpiece which never got the credit it deserved because it came out so late in the ps1's lifecycle, and so close to ff10.
Derp its really more personal preference I played both recently without any nostalgia and had much more fun with 7 than 9. A lot of it is what art style and characters you prefer. I think it is very subjective. You understand the characters more in ff7 later in the game(especially cloud). Both great games in different ways, I don’t think it’s fair to say people only think 7 is better cause “nostalgia”
7 is my favourite because it's the first one I played so nostalgia, especially the music. But 9 I acknowledge as technically the best FF, that's my other favourite for that reason. Proper games.
This video was a TRIP! It encapsulated my age 10-20 childhood perfectly. PS1 was the ultimate jrpg machine--only the SNES can compare when it comes to rpg/jrpg's. Thank you for the journey. Subbed. Also, FF7 Remake HYPE!!!!!!!
Good list, overall. I'd probably swap out a few games (Legend of Legaia, Breath of Fire 2, and Ogre Battle over Grandia, Chrono X, and FFIX [games I never finished due the days of renting out of Blockbuster 🤣]).
Hey TVGS, unfotunately, feeling kinda guilty as I still miss many ps1 RPGs, even though I got many RPG titles in my collection. Chrono Cross was not even released in Europe which sucks, same goes for my favorite Legend of Mana. Apart from that I am huge FF fan, love FFVIII. I got my hands on Grandia 2 last summer, I defo need to buy the first one too. Amazing list, keep up the good work.
Haha don’t feel guilty mate! I could play that game over and over again without being bored. 2nd and 3rd spots would have to go to FF9 and Xenogears for me.
I own it. I remember finding it at a Zellers just by itself. But a year later found it there loaded with like 20 copies of the game... I remember that clearly cause it's actually one of the most valuable games for PS1 now.
I think Legend of the Dragoon is one of the best for the system. Wasn't really into Suikoden II. Suikoden I on the other hand was AWESOME. Yep Final Fantasy VII is #1. Been playing it again lately. This time learning E.Skills by Manipulating with Cait Sith. Kind of tedious but so far worth it. Got 2 of them ☺
The remade version for PS4 had trophies and one of them was for the skills I think the hardest one was red weapon thankfully the game came with a cheat system built in to help cause he would of been impossible otherwise even at level 99

I loved Thousand Arms! It was the first games I remember that had voice acting I enjoyed and a unique main character coz he's not just your regular good guy trope lol. And not what-was-then-usual silent protagonist too. It was probably weird to be playing it as a little girl though considering the MC is a bit of a perv blacksmith dating girls in the smithy rofl.
I never finished it, but that intro was the shit. That and its instrumental version at the start menu, I would just leave the PS running for that tune alone.
Can I recommend that anyone watching this list seriously consider playing legend of legaia if they haven't, seen a lot of comments giving praise but I'll explain a little for those who haven't played the game yet. The story is set in a post apocoliptic world that was brought to it's state via something called the mist. This makes normal sentient beings called ra seru who were in symbiosis with humanity into monsters called sim seru. You take upon a journey after the mist initially hits the main characters village and meet lots of characters with distinct personalities throughout the game and some join your party. The combat in the game includes input based artes system which is extremely unique which allows your characters to pull of different attacks based on what part of the body you attack with but there is also classic magic in the game which is similar to ff7 summons The bosses are very memorable with unique looks and attacks. The music is top notch and I wish the composer did other works. It has a very varied score throughout with music that builds tension hype etc extremely well. Thanks for reading all the way if you have I just needed to explain a little about why this game is top tier for ps1
I played it, but don’t remember all the details. I remember the combat system and the Mist, but can’t remember the story all that well. I remember playing the demo over and over until we eventually got the game. I remember enjoying it, but thanks for the recap. It brings back memories.
I enjoyed Legend of Legaia and still have the game. Unique battle system and overall it was fun. However, for me, Every one of the ones listed is better than Legaia. Some not by much, but still better. I would have included Breath of Fire 3 as well. I think every person who loves RPG's should play Legaia, but after the ones on the list.
Your comment sold me on it, i finished the game a few days ago and was looking for your comment to thank you from the bottom of my heart. The game was an amazing experience
Man I just learned how to mod my PlayStation classic and loaded my flash drive with nothing but PS1 RPG's that I missed out on as a kid due to growing up poor. I just beat The Legend of Dragoon and even though the translation is flawed, it was great.
Tried getting into Grandia last year and although I really liked the graphics and battle system, the lack of challenge really hurt it. Battles were way too easy and I found it difficult to lose. Also, the story was a bit weak and somewhat childish but maybe that was due to the age of the characters. It definitely didn't have that epic feel like so many other RPGs.
@@Flomen01 Well for one, it's actually part of the Xenosaga series, so I believe Namco owns it now. Xenosaga was supposed to connect to Xenogears somehow, but that never happened. Second, I meant more like the complex story would throw some gamers off. Also it's not as famous as other games. Not to say I don't want it to be remade, just that it probably wouldn't be high on the list. Why remake this game, when they can remake a more famous game for the fourth time and make tons of money.
Wild Arms - Great game! Loved it and all the sequels I played. Unfortunately for me it was a rental, as it was one of the few discs I could reliably get a pure-bred Monol in the first Monster Rancher from. ---- Grandia - Loved it and its sequel. ---- Lunar - Great game, somehow made the transition and improved along the way. ---- Star Ocean: The Second Story - Sadly never played this one at the time... I don't remember seeing it on the shelves near me. ---- The Legend of Dragoon - I think I only played the demo... and I know why. With all the great games available around that time, it went on my back-burner to eventually get around to. I was lucky enough to have gotten a loyalty gift from Squaresoft in the form of the Final Fantasy VIII soundtrack and had spent my time anticipating it. ---- Suikoden II - Same story as a few others. Too many good RPGs, not enough time. ---- Final Fantasy 7 - Pretty sure you would have been lynched if you hadn't included this one. While RPGs weren't unheard of before this one, it showed what the Playstation was capable of, and it followed the tried-and-true example of the best-rememberd Final Fantasy games by loosely following Star Wars. ---- Xenogears - Yay! Originally thought of being too full of religious symbols to translate to the North American market, I have loved this game for so long, especially as it was the game's following that eventually led to the Xenosaga series of games. It was great near the end of the game to go back and beat on foot the enemies that used to require Gears to fight. Also, hunting down all the secrets could take up its own video. ---- Chrono Cross - I bought this when it came out, but apparently the store I bought it at had put it out before they were supposed to. To get all the characters, it took 3 playthroughs to get them all. It was a fun journey. ---- Final Fantasy 9 - I passed over this originally, it felt like Squaresoft took a step back on the visuals. However, I recently picked up a copy, gave it a second try, and am liking it immensely. Great list, keep on gaming!
Saga Frontier 2 is on a whole nother level of beauty. I can still play that now. And truly enjoy it. I miss when squaresoft had soundtracks second to none. Beautiful score
I say the greatest RPG's ever were on the PS One! You made a list of good ones. One of my favorite PS One rpg's is Shadow Madness. I think it's one of the most underrated games on the system. It's nothing revolutionary, but it was fun and had some great humor in it.
PS2 probably has better quality games overall. FFX/XII, Dark Cloud/Chronicle, SMT Nocturne/DDS1&2, Persona 3 FES and Persona 4, Shadow Hearts 1/2/3 Star Ocean TTEOT, Rogue Galaxy etc etc. The upgrade in graphics did count for a lot.
Great list, but one was completely left out in my friendly opinion. Vagrant Story. This is a game that is so underrated and over looked I find it to be shocking indeed. One of the greatest games ever created and a true masterpiece of it's time. Squaresoft did something unreal with this game as well, no loading times. That's right, this game has no loading times except on the main menu only once and it's quite brief. You gotta beat this game, it will change you as a person by the end no doubt.
Glad you enjoyed it Jo. Vagrant story was incredible, totally agree! It was so hard getting the choices down to ten, will have to include it for a part 2 🙂

@@padraicburns9278 I love Chrono Cross too, but some of the music is sort of re-imagined themes from some of Chrono Trigger's OST. I also have a soft spot for FF7 soundtrack, would probably lump them all in my top 5 favorites.
Absolutely!! With Chrono Cross and Star Ocean Second Story right behind it.
Xenogears was top rpg for it's time. Only those who played it and actually finished it know it to be so.
Ff7 is an ok rpg compared to it
Chrono trigger is the best SNES era soundtrack though dated is easily on the list with best of all time
Ff7 ripped off alot of elements from its predecessor's. Mind you only to expand on it in inventive ways.
But ripping of major plot points and/or characters from ff7. Lessons its value.
Every Time I see these types of videos deep down I know they'll never mention Legend of Legaia somehow this game is beyond overlooked
Currently doing a play through. Haven’t played it in years. Definitely as good, if not better than I remember.
I loved Legend of Legaia. The xp/money didn't balance well considering how long some of those random encounters lasted
Remember when you used to get those demo discs with the game magazines? My brothers and I play LoL demo over and over. The combat system is unlike any I’ve seen to this day and was killer. We eventually got the game, but we wore that demo out before we did lol.
Legend of Legaia is the only miss on the list.
Same. People talk about Legend of Dragoon all the time, but Legaia is REALLY niche, and is honestly one of my favorite RPGs period, despite its flaws.
Lunar 2 Eternal Blue
But yeah those two games should have been on this list.
Legend of legaia is great
@@wohdinhel I actually thought Legia was a much better game than Legend of the Dragoon. But yeah...super niche.
Breath of Fire 3 should have been on there.
Great list, glad to see FFVII, FFIX, Xenogears, and CC at the top. The only thing I would add is that FFVIII is just as much of a "must have" title as VII and IX are.
RPG games I loved playing on the Ps1 as side from the Final Fantasy Series are:
Suikoden 2
Vandal Hearts
Breath of Fire
Alundra
Tales of Destiny
Chrono Cross
Xenogears

Well, Lunar has been remade a million times, but the same love wasn't extended to Eternal Blue.
I’m upset that Legaia wasn’t included, but you DID include Dragoon so..

Some of my all time favorite JRPGs that need to be checked out were left off this list!
Valkyrie Profile (one of the best JRPGs ever made, unique, and unlike any other game you'll experience, the in depth story every character gets is awesome)
Vagrant Story (again a very unique game, but with an AMAZING story and very well paced)
Final Fantasy Tactics (easily the best game in the FF series story wise, even if you don't like tactical jrpgs it's worth the time)
Final Fantasy 8 (the best soundtrack in a FF game, and also one of the best character development games out there)
Front Mission 3 (one of the most underrated games ever, amazingly well done story, interesting characters, tactical JRPG)
Other honorable mentions from me:
Breath of Fire 3 + 4
Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth
Parasite Eve 1 + 2
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
SaGa Frontier 1 + 2
Saiyuki: Journey West
Thousand Arms
Threads of Fate
Vandal Hearts
Vanguard Bandits
Legend of Legaia
Those are all my choices for things that didn't show up here.
Agree with you there, not including Valkyrie Profile is a crime, one of the most unique JRPG of it's time, be it by it's narrative, combat or post game content.
i just saw front mission 3 on the ps3 store. trying to get as many of these great ps1 rpgs cheap before they shut down the ps3 store.
Valkyrie Profile is one of the best RPGs of all time, the best PS1 RPG for sure IMHO, the only PS1 title that made me cry at the ending (I could barely fight Loki for the second time) (even though FF8 came close to it).
How did Valkyrie Profile not make it on the list?! FF7 is hot garbage in my opinion.
Vagrant Story! A masterpiece, and one of the most unique games Square has ever done. Not to mention what a technical triumph it was at the time.
Definitely. Vagrant Story and Grandia. My favorite RPGs of all time!!! I miss the old days playing with my brothers. What a lovely life 😁
What a brilliant list, I would've added Vagrant Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete, but yeah, the list is well done, Top 3 would be ChronoCross, Final Fantasy IX and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete.

Wild arms is one of the most underrated games ever, I have too much feelings with this game
Agreed, it deserved so much more attention!
indeed, i love wild arms 1 and 2
TBH, Wild ARMs hasn't aged all that well. It falls into 3 traps that old-school JRPGs tend to suffer from:
@@227someguy wild arms 2 is better and fix that 3 thing u mention btw

A game that I never see mentioned but personally loved as a teenager was Thousand Arms. It had some of the best humor in a JRPG that I've played and the mini dating sim/weapon forge thing was interesting. I guess the story wasn't much to write home about though. Still a solid game, imo.
One of my favorite games as a child I’m actually replaying it now the nostalgia

I enjoyed XIII, but it will never be up there with III, VII, or IX. I think FFIII was the best one overall, VII was simply groundbreaking, and IX was a fantastic throwback to the classic FF games. XIII has good graphics and a decent story, but I personally hated the spell stocking system (pretty sure a lot of people did). I treasure ff9 greatly!
The combat in the game includes input based artes system which is extremely unique which allows your characters to pull of different attacks based on what part of the body you attack with but there is also classic magic in the game which is similar to ff7 summons
The bosses are very memorable with unique looks and attacks.

Great list. I would add Thousand Arms, Tactics ogre, Ogre Battle, Persona 2, and the arc the lad collection.

While RPGs weren't unheard of before this one, it showed what the Playstation was capable of, and it followed the tried-and-true example of the best-rememberd Final Fantasy games by loosely following Star Wars.
----
Xenogears - Yay!
----
Chrono Cross - I bought this when it came out, but apparently the store I bought it at had put it out before they were supposed to. To get all the characters, it took 3 playthroughs to get them all. It was a fun journey.
----
Final Fantasy 9 - I passed over this originally, it felt like Squaresoft took a step back on the visuals. However, I recently picked up a copy, gave it a second try, and am liking it immensely.
Great list, keep on gaming!
Dark cloud, legend of laegia, legend of dragoon, ff tactics.
Dark Cloud? On the PS1?
Dark cloud is from ps2
Legend of Dragoon was my first RPG ever. And to this day probably still my favorite.
Such a solid game!
@@thatvideogamesshow Now I gotta play it c: Great list!
Great list… I will add Final Fantasy VIII to this list..
Great choice!
Hey, FFVIII is my favorite, I love graphics, story, junction system and Triple Triad.
Loved the realistic style. Especially after VII!
and we got the best song in FF in ff8 as well, Shuffle or Boogie :D
@@ScrewFearMe Used to play TT just for the song back then :D The Extreme is masterpiece
I'm still own all of those games. They was and still are the best of rpg
Nobody talks about Saga frontier 2. That's one of the rpg I enjoyed the most on ps1
I preferred Saga Frontier. From what I gather, most people really like one of them and not the other.
Saga Frontier 2 is on a whole nother level of beauty. I can still play that now. And truly enjoy it. I miss when squaresoft had soundtracks second to none. Beautiful score
beautiful graphics, great soundtrack but really difficult gameplay.
That gsmeplay was super hard! I remember the 1st few enemies just wouldnt die lol. Battles took forever!
@@thatvideogamesshow can't wait for that part to come out!
@@thatvideogamesshow Damn, you are cool bro.
Kind of want Square Enix to make the sequel or at least similar RPG as VS. The battle system is truly revolutionary imo.. and no other rpgs used similar system as VS.
@@dellasevilla It sort of reminds me of Fallout 3 etc. Or even Parasite Eve of the time. Isn't there also a fighting game rpg on ps1 that uses a similar type of "pick your body part to hit" system?
That Ridge Racer 4 track at the intro is soooo good.
This is incredibly difficult as i can think of 20 awesome entries off the top of my head. At a push though my top 10 would be:
FF7
FF8
FF9
Wild Arms
Suikoden 2
Alundra
Legend of Legaia
Legend of Dragoon
Dragon Warrior 7
Xenogears
Great list!
Alundra!
8 sucks. Xenogears is a good story, but woefully incomplete game.
@@kekeke8988 8 sucks in your opinion. Telling me that wont change my mind and make me think it sucks
Hands down I agree with every game on this list except I would add the are the lad 1&2 onto the list. Great list
"Now im a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series... especially FFXIII" - TVGS, 3/2/2020
Ugh.. don’t mention that train wreck 😅
@@thatvideogamesshow XIII was better than XV.
The only FF title I did not play.
One of my hidden gem rpgs of that generation was Granstream Saga.
I like this but Breath of fire 3 should definitely be on the list.
agree, and valkyrie profile, FF tactics also >.
I played the hell outta Chrono Cross, the replay value was crazy. 10 or more endings (I only 3 or 4), 40 characters (couldn’t get all on first play through), and incredible graphics and soundtrack. Haven’t played it in almost 20 years, and after watching this, it still looks good. If you haven’t played it, do it now.
Definitely missed Parasite Eve and Chrono Trigger here...
Man I cried with Final Fantasy VII! To me it's the best one of the saga! So many memories with that gem!!
Proud owner of 8 of the games mentioned in this list😌😁 Legend of Dragoon has been on my radar for a long time now still want to buy it!
I’m glad to see Xenogears and FF7 up there, but what about FFT?
This is technically not an RPG, must be the reason.
@@danielhadida3915
It is
great list but ill insert FFVIII, disgaea and valkyrie profile
i was born in 1991..
and i have played all of it except xenogears..
damn, now i realize. as a child I was so into rpg.. And i have no regret... I love my childhood
How do you even know any of these games? You would've been six when FF7 came out.
@@kekeke8988 i lived in Indonesia... Land of pirating games since the old times .. When i was 10 there are so many gameshop that sell pirate version of psx games.. Im not proud of that fact though
@@okikdarmawan3117
PSX games were easy to copy everywhere because all you needed was a PC with a CDR drive and mod chip the PSX.
That is the era of rpg haha
suikoden 2 will always always be my number 1 favorite game ever, nothing tops it🤗
I'm a bit disapointed that Final Fantasy Tactics wasn't in the list...
Good game but some would say that’s of another genre altogether for its own list.
So very glad to see Suikoden II (my favorite Suikoden), Chrono Cross, FFIX (My favorite FF), and Legend of Dragoon (currently playing) on this list!
Im honestly suprised legend of legaia isnt on the list
The fact that you put xenogears about FF7 earns my respect. That was the game that should have been revered in 1997.
FF IX is absolutely one of the best games ever
Amen!
You got a nice chill voice. Good video and list. Thanks.
Legend of Legaia is missing here.
This list needs ANOTHER 10 added to it lol. Great list, glad I subcribed
Well i hope some day sony wake up and remaster legend of dragoon
Hell yeah! Great idea!
It's not about waking up. It would likely be a terrible business move. The game is great, but dated, and I doubt it woult sell at all, since nobody knows about it (or cares) nowadays.
@@DanoLefourbe i think they know it enough believe me so lets hope they take the risk.
I put so many hrs into Star Ocean Publishing cooking ect.. Great Game! Final Fantasy 7 was my first rpg game Man I spent a whole summer vacation beating it. 😄 Played till the clock stopped!! It changed my life.😎😘😄
Pretty good list. Suikoden II, Wild Arms and Legend of Dragoon are the only games I have yet to play, and I really like what I see from Wild Arms. Oh, and I think Lunar 2 outclasses the first in every way.
Great list! 👍 But it's only a matter of taste, TBH. For me, I like those Dark-Themed JRPGs, so my personal favorites are:
01. Xenogears
02. Suikoden II
03. Chrono Cross
04. Valkyrie Profile
05. Parasite Eve
06. Vagrant Story
07. Final Fantasy VII
08. The Legend of Dragoon
09. Vandal Hearts
10. Koudelka
