Robert sang this song in a wheelchair, due to the terrible accident he had suffered and that forced the group to cancel tours. It's not just the operation on his vocal cords, it's that it was not known if he would be able to walk well again, everyone was nervous and depressed. This album was recorded in just 18 days, especially the result of Page's dedication. J.P. Jons was a little absent, Bonzo a little drunk, Plant in a wheelchair. Without a fixed home, because of taxes, like gypsies, at the peak of fame, nervous, full of fury and rage. THIS IS AN IMPRESSIVE SONG and given the circumstances even more so.
Actually it's JPJones' galloping bass that propels the song to locomotive speeds. "Relentless" is the only word that can describe this masterpiece. A true magnum opus.
there are albums that turn you from a casual fan into a hard core fan. for led zeppelin it was "presence" for me. once it came out i went back and listened to everything that came before. just like i did when pink floyd released "animals" the following year. i just wanted to immerse myself in their music.
Plant actually sang this song in a wheel chair. He was recovering from broken ankles he received in a car crash he and his wife were in after the 1975 tour in Greece I believe. So in part that's where the name of this song comes from. And yes the live version from Knebworth 1979 is absolutely fire. Watch Achilles Last Stand and Kashmir from that show. You will have your brains completely destroyed.
Utterly magnificent. Achilles Last Stand connects to me on a spiritual level like no other song. It is virulent, pulsating, and energetic from start to finish, and every instrument shines. Of course Bonzo is incredible, but just listen to that bass too! What a track, and what an album!!
It was an April morning when they told us we should go And as I turned to you, you smiled at me How could we say no? With all the fun to have, to live the dreams we always had Whoa, the songs to sing when we at last return again Sending off a glancing kiss to those who claim they know Below the streets that steam and hiss The devil is in his hole Oh to sail away to sandy lands and other days Oh to touch the dream, hides inside and never seen Into the sun the south the north, at last the birds have flown The shackles of commitments fell in pieces on the ground Oh to ride the wind, to tread the air above the din Oh to laugh aloud, dancing as we fought the crowd To seek the man whose pointing hand The giant step unfolds To guide us from the curving path That turns our feet to stone If one bell should ring in celebration for a king So fast the heart should beat as proud the head with heavy feet Days went by when you and I bathed in eternal summer's glow As far away and distant our mutual child did grow Oh the sweet refrain soothes the soul and calms the pain Oh Albion remains, sleeping now to rise again Wondering and wandering What place to rest the search The mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth The mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth From the earth I know the way, know the way, know the way, know the way Oh the mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth
Ah, yes. Presence. The 7th album from the greatest band in Rock. Brilliant...Page is phenomenal. Bonham banging away, it brings tears to my eyes. Thankyou.🔥
Jimmy said it was the most difficult song he ever played. He plays all 5 tracks live, no dubs. Legend has it Keith Richards asked him if he was going to bring in another guitarist to help with the 5 tracks for live performances and Jimmy said “no, I can handle it” Amazing guitarist WATCH> th-cam.com/video/YWOuzYvksRw/w-d-xo.html
My fav Zep song of all time. Leaving behind everything and continuing life. Epic, poetic, and shows the bands incredible musicianship. And the guitar solo destroys everything. "Wandering and wandering What place to rest the search The mighty arms of Atlas Hold the heavens from the earth"
Yes studio version first, always. Great reaction! I’ve been waiting for this one for a while. In My Time of Dying, The Battle of Evermore, The Rover, Custard Pie, The Ocean... oh and No Quarter! Too many songs.
I really love this album. There are four or five other songs you should listen to. “For Your Life”, “Hots on for Nowhere”, “Tea for One”, “Nobodies Fault But Mine” all really good.
One of their most difficult to perform so incredibly rapid pace . Jimmy Page explained technically his most complex song to write and perform on 🎸 Bonham is proving here there's no one in rock history that can perform so powerfully on drums . He's a dynamo on drums. He's flying !!!! Love it .....baseline is incredible.......so glad I saw this band in 1975. NC.
Trampled under foot - a heavy tune that put the LEAD... in Led Zeppelin The Rover -one of the nastiest and heavy riff of them all! Do studio versions of both. Great to play them back to back .. like getting your head hit by a sledge hammer...
Tho it's hard to choose a BEST Zeppelin song/album, Presence is actually my favorite. Great songs all the way thru. Achilles one of my all-time favorite Zep tunes. Next take a listen to Nobody's Fault But Mine. Excellenté!!!
Hello. This is my first time visiting your channel. I want to tell you that I can tell the song is impactful by your reactions. Your face is turning red! But in a good way! This is one of the band's most powerful and epic songs they have made! And I would prefer to hear the studio version of this song. Enjoyed your reaction.
The dude on the right really feels the music and is on the journey Zep is laying down. I feel the same way about this song. It’s an epic journey. Love it!
Stefk. I was lucky enough to see them in 73. You have been reacting to them when they were at their peek but I think you should see them do Kashmir in 2007 in London. Jason Bonham on the drums. Note that Plant was in his late fifties and John Paul and Page were in their early sixties. Not bad for a bunch of seniors.
The best I've seen live were Terry Bozzio (with Zappa) and Ian Paice (Deep Purple.) I've seem Peart many times also. He's right up there. Moon's style defies description. Bonzo brought the heavy hitting that he learned from Carmine Appice. Great drummers, one and all!
I like the way y'all don't talk to the end. I like interruptions because that i would interrupt too. I am 55 years ol and this game is still my favorite then after since I was 12.
You guys should listen this song ‘s live version from the bootleg called ‘listen to this eddie’ is even better , drums are much more stronger and powerful

Greatest band of all time
No contest. At all.
No one comes close
Deuses!!!
Led Zeppelin, is my overall to me the best band ever.
JPJ the silent assassin killing it with that driving bass!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Actually it's JPJones' galloping bass that propels the song to locomotive speeds. "Relentless" is the only word that can describe this masterpiece. A true magnum opus.
Hey Bros, Achillies last stand live, in Knebworth England
This song makes me feel like I am riding a horse to battle across a stoney field, through a shallow creek, then up a grassy hill in the pelting rain.
there are albums that turn you from a casual fan into a hard core fan. for led zeppelin it was "presence" for me. once it came out i went back and listened to everything that came before. just like i did when pink floyd released "animals" the following year. i just wanted to immerse myself in their music.
This is easily the hottest drum track ever laid down in the history of rock...EVER!!
no doubt man! Bonzo's drums sounds like a locomotive in this track! There'll never be another one like him! 🥁
Plant actually sang this song in a wheel chair. He was recovering from broken ankles he received in a car crash he and his wife were in after the 1975 tour in Greece I believe. I second that - & I was there in '79.
He almost severed his Achilles’ tendon.
Utterly magnificent. Achilles Last Stand connects to me on a spiritual level like no other song. It is virulent, pulsating, and energetic from start to finish, and every instrument shines. Of course Bonzo is incredible, but just listen to that bass too! What a track, and what an album!!
Agree. That outro sound is hypnotic
The John Paul Jones bass line is the secret-weapon sonic center of this masterpiece. :)
My favorite song of all time.
You should watch the Knebworth 1979 live version of this. It’s insane ! Bonzo is incredible 🥁🎧
And Page awful in comparison to his peak
Yeeeahhh!!! Its the best fucking versioon, Page and Bonzo were on fire
@@j.j.4150 although they didn’t do this particular song at the O2 in 2007, I think they sound better in general than they did in 1979
@@j.j.4150
Yeah he was a heroin junkie at that point but he nailed the song without all of the overdubs of the album.
@Jeff Spicoli I can't disagree, but the version from Knebworth with video and excellent sound quality, so it's better for the guys to listen to it
It was an April morning when they told us we should go
And as I turned to you, you smiled at me
How could we say no?
With all the fun to have, to live the dreams we always had
Whoa, the songs to sing when we at last return again
Sending off a glancing kiss to those who claim they know
Below the streets that steam and hiss
The devil is in his hole
Oh to sail away to sandy lands and other days
Oh to touch the dream, hides inside and never seen
Into the sun the south the north, at last the birds have flown
The shackles of commitments fell in pieces on the ground
Oh to ride the wind, to tread the air above the din
Oh to laugh aloud, dancing as we fought the crowd
To seek the man whose pointing hand
The giant step unfolds
To guide us from the curving path
That turns our feet to stone
If one bell should ring in celebration for a king
So fast the heart should beat as proud the head with heavy feet
Days went by when you and I bathed in eternal summer's glow
As far away and distant our mutual child did grow
Oh the sweet refrain soothes the soul and calms the pain
Oh Albion remains, sleeping now to rise again
Wondering and wandering
What place to rest the search
The mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth
The mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth
From the earth
I know the way, know the way, know the way, know the way
Oh the mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth
Ah, yes. Presence. The 7th album from the greatest band in Rock. Brilliant...Page is phenomenal. Bonham banging away, it brings tears to my eyes. Thankyou.🔥
Some of their best work on this album. So underrated.
Ha! "I feel like I'm in a war right now."
Had this piped into our headsets during desert storm.
bonzos nickname is hammer of the gods, now you know why. and imo this is 1 of jimmies best ever solos, its so haunting and emotional!

One of my favorites!!
THE GREATEST BAND EVER HANDS DOWN!!❤😊
This is a fantastically complex song musically. It’s so great live. It’s one of those Zep songs that really grows on you the more you listen.
Definitely definitely a masterpiece. 💯
Occasionally the right musicians get together under the right circumstances in the right time - and you get a band like LZ. Best rock band ever!
This album came out when I was 18 years old. You two guys remind me of my youth on how I reacted then. 🎶👍
Das zu hören ist wie Magie ❤️🔥
this song and "nobodys fault but mine" were my introduction to LZ...that was 44 years ago...to this day...LZ is as fresh than all other music....
TEA FOR ONE....off the same album....just achingly beautiful!!
Jimmy did the guitar parts in one overnight session !!!!
Presence is my favorite record and it's so freaking underrated.
I'm loving it you guys are making a die hard Zep fan Happy 😍 Another great song by the GODS OF ROCK✌️
I love how you guys really "get" great music.
Tea For One is another great song from this album
This song is my favourite zeppelin song!
One of the 5 greatest rock bands ever, And John Bonham is in EVERY conversation about greatest drummers.
Yes studio version first, always. Great reaction! I’ve been waiting for this one for a while.
In My Time of Dying, The Battle of Evermore, The Rover, Custard Pie, The Ocean... oh and No Quarter! Too many songs.

I love The Rover!

Favorite song, favorite reaction!
and that is why Led Zeppelin is the greatest band of all time
Fun fact: Page played in this album with a broken finger in left hand
It was actually healed by this time.
You need to react to In my Time of Dying ! Trust me 👍
It’s hard for me to be friends with somebody who isn’t a Zeppelin fan.
Led Zeppelin - For your lifeeee!!!!!
Tho it's hard to choose a BEST Zeppelin song/album, Presence is actually my favorite. Great songs all the way thru. Achilles one of my all-time favorite Zep tunes. Next take a listen to Nobody's Fault But Mine. Excellenté!!!
One of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs is Ramble On. Banner 💥
One word to describe it ... Amazing !!
Another great song from that album is "Tea for one" .. you'll love it.
In a recent article Jimmy Page said that this is his favorite Led Zeppelin song.
FOR THIS REASON BONZO IS CALLING " THE DRUMS GOD" 👑🥁😉
Led Zeppelin: In my time of dying pleaseeeeee
This song is ridiculous! Gotta love it. Check out "Braun Yer Stomp" to see yet another side of Led Zeppelin.
Achilles live at Knebworth 79 will warp your minds .. Strap yourselves in tight

Yes bonzo is the best drummer of all time, with Neil peart and Keith moon for me.
My exact list and same order.

Need Ward in there.

Love zeppelin this track sounds tin y
That album was recorded wile plant was in a wheelchair, rock on persy!!!
This song is freight train, with small stops along the way, but always under power
Amazing 🎸🎶🔥
The band Heart swiped the baseline/drums from this song to create: Barracuda.

Best live version of this song is 7/7/80 Frankfurt- it's here on TH-cam- audio only.
YOU GUYS GOTTA DO ZEPPELIN THE ROVER... BEST SONG EVER
When I first heard this in the 1970's - I was destroyed. (In the very best way).
first time for me, nice one!
RESPECT!
You missed the fastest drum fill @1:47! :) Love your videos!! Rock On...
I would love for you guys to react to "The Battle Of Evermore". Another quite different one, but one of their very best.
I like the way y'all don't talk to the end. I like interruptions because that i would interrupt too. I am 55 years ol and this game is still my favorite then after since I was 12.
Hammer of the gods!
After all this time every list still puts Bonzo as the best drummer ever.
"John Paul Jones played an eight-string bass guitar and also a normal four-string bass on this track."
I just found your channel. Suggestions...turn up the volume on your end 🎧 Enjoy your reactions!
Custard Pie is a great Zeppelin song to react to. Very bluesy sound in there early days.
Awesome
epic song
You guys should listen this song ‘s live version from the bootleg called ‘listen to this eddie’ is even better , drums are much more stronger and powerful
Yes, studio version then live.
Bonzo,'The God Of Thunder'. Knebworth is best live version of this song.Keep rockin' guys!🤘
You’ve got to do “ Hot’s on for Nowhere “ Absolutely great song! Thanks!
You should listen to “Four Sticks”. He actually played the song with four drumsticks.
EPIC..
Now watch it live from Knebworth in 1979!
I was a sophomore in high school when this lp came out. BTW..... This is the best tune of that lp. IMO probably LZ best.
Best Jimmy Page's solo in my humble opinion
Try "In my time of dying". Bonzo is tremendously insane.
Achilles last stand live in kneborth 1979 !!!!
Try Carouselambra... must unbelievable song, so many changes in time signatures.
