Just like every other Zeppelin album that came out, this was my favorite the first time I listened to it. The only difference was that this has remained my favorite ever since.
All Zeppelin albums have had a balance of heavy, delicate, bluesy and acoustic feeling in every work they have done. That's why there one of the greatest rock bands EVER!
If you take the best of 4 extremely talented musicians and roll it up into one song you get "Achilles Last Stand". The intensity doesn't stop throughout. My favorite rock song ever!
Physical Graffiti and Presence are my favorite Led Zeppelin albums. They were most experimental on them, please do more off these phenomenal albums....
This album was done in just 3weeks with Robert in a wheel chair !! Jimmys guitar masterpiece , no one played like this in 1976 Bonham at his best , we couldnt wait for this album to hit the shelf back then.
Me as a young teen growing up in the 70's PRICELESS! MY mom "What do you want for Christmas" me, Led Zeppelin- Presence. The 8 track in my stocking and my LOVE of Zeppelin began. Thank you FM radio for the soundtrack of my life. You guys are fantastic and doing a great job and it's a joy to watch you discover all these geniuses of music for the first time. I have seen so many classic rock bands in concert..Zeppelin, Floyd, Yes and the list goes on and on. What a great life and great parents who let me crank it up!! This album is Epic!
You've been listening to Zeppelin for ten years and never heard this, I don't think they were ever out of their comfort zone, nothing was off the table for them, that's why they stood out from the rest. Great reaction to an epic track....
When Jimmy Page first presented this to John Paul Jones, it didn't have the scale on it. JPJ said there wasn't a scale that existed that could be laid over it. Page basically said "hold my beer."
Every note you play can be scaled in one way or another. The distance between notes is referred to as 'Intervals' which relate notes and create different emotions or moods. So no matter how weird is what you play the notes in it have some intervallic connections and can be called either lydian or phrygian of any sort.

I heard it for the first time when my older brother (2 years) was cranking it on his a boombox when we were walking to the corner store while visiting family in California. I was probably 12, and had heard of and heard some Zeppelin, but when THIS song, and then later, "Nobody's Fault But Mine" blasted from the speakers, I said, no doubt totally uncool, to my brother "THIS is Zeppelin??" "Yes," he said with an irritated edge, lol! From that moment on...
This is from the Presence album. I really like the whole album. Kind of funky, and a really good blues tune called “ Tea for One”. “For Your Life,”, “Hots on for Nowhere” and “Nobody’s Fault but Mine” also stand out. Have you heard “The Wanton Song”? Very different. It’s heavier.
It’s a great album. I think it’s one of those albums that grows on you-it’s not a tour de force like Physical Graffiti. I don’t know about you, but I don’t always want to listen to a tour de force.
A huge Led Zeppelin fan myself, this was very nice to revisit, so thank you for this! It's a bit sad that the Presence and In Through The Out Door albums don't get as much coverage as the previous ones, so if you choose to do another Zep reaction, I'd be happy to see how you feel about the track In The Evening or Robert Plant's Calling To You from his Fate Of Nations from 1993. Cheers! ...
Calling to You is a killer track, as Robert was calling out to Jimmy about getting back together, at least I believe that's what the song was intended for, he calls his name at the very end 🎵 Jimmy 🎵
I think the story goes that Robert Plant had of seriously injured ankle due to a car accident and the reference in the song title is to the Achilles heel. It was thought at one point that he would never be able to stand and sing again. Gratefully that did not occur. Great song to play while driving a car but be careful you may well get a ticket! Zeppelin is heroic for many reasons including endurance!
I actually talked to Jimmy about the live 1973 MSG concert that I went to see and this album that he produced and recorded and mixed in 18 days! Alot of the solos were pretty spontaneous he told me...Jimmy is the God of guitarist!
Jimmy Page has stated that Achilles Last stand is his favorite song to play, in concert. Also, in answer to Nick & Lex’s comment that this sounded like Iron Maiden; bear in mind that, Zeppelin preceded Iron Maiden by a decade+.
This song will always be one of my best memories of the month I spent living in Cardiff, walking around the Arcades and looking for records at Spillers and in the Covered Market❤️🏴
Zeppelin was "all that they were cracked up too be" in a live setting. I saw them during 1 of the 6 legendary sold out concert dates at Madison Square Garden during their 1977 North American tour. Majestic, powerful, awe-inspiring and totally unforgettable. Eventhough I was not present the night they recorded their "live" material, "Achilles Last Stand" was the highlight for me that night. Surprisingly, 21 nights later, I saw a band performing in concert that blew away the mighty Zeppelin. June 28th, South Phillys Spectrum. Pink Floyds "In the Flesh" tour promoting their "Animals" album. Pink Floyd "by a good length" at the finish line. Now THAT show was total perfection.
the first and last 10 seoncds of this song are the only times where they chill out. the rest of the song they are going completely ham.. Power house song!! one of the most epic songs
Something about the singing, the composition and the intricacy holds it back from being 'heavy metal'. At times it's almost like jazz or something. The parts where Plant wails over it towards the end sound so nostalgic and folky and English. For me it's like something you can listen to late at night on a summer's evening and actually find it relaxing and soulful rather than powerhouse.
@1:25 I think you are talking about "Remasters". I have it as a three-disc set with the third disc being the interviews between Plant, Page, and Jones. There are two Box Sets, with the first one with the corn field patterns and the shadow of the zeppelin and the other one had that same picture with some color effects.
The album you were trying to think of was "Led Zeppelin Remasters" 1990. CD's were gaining popularity & digital recording was getting more advanced so, many older recordings were being digitally remastered for the CD market. If I'm not mistaken "Remasters" was a box set.
This one of my favorite Zeppelin songs along with in my time of dying, the rover, Kashmir. Zeppelin go harder with Physical Graffiti and part of Presence. In through the out door you can tell they were near the end.
Zeppelin were from their first album always stretching and exploring their musical adventures, diverse, passionate and played with a magical chemistry between the band. Please review 'No Quarter'
Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are huge Zeppelin fans and directly lifted this galloping bass line for their song Barracuda. In addition, I believe Bonzo's staccato drumming inspired Metallica's "One". This song recounts Robert and Jimmy's many trips to North Africa and other places. The title references Robert's car accident in which he broke his leg; he recorded the entire album from a wheelchair (the working title for this song was "The Wheelchair Song"). Lyrics also reference Albion and Atlas (both as the mountain range and as the Titan from mythology). It is a very intense song and one of Jimmy's favorites.
1976 I'm 16 and a drummer. Get the album love Bonzo. Put the phones on put it on the deck. First track this one. Oh my days! I went mental. Got behind the kit and spent a whole day trying to get that beat down. Single pedal leg is hurting so bad😂love led zep, Bonham greatest rock drummer ever👍🇬🇧
This epic song is the favorite one of Jimmy Page, he considers it as its masterpiece. The live version of"No quarter" which sound more like very Pink Floyd is another gem.
I've watched a few of your reactions now and am throughly enjoying them. You now have a new subscriber. As for a Zeppelin song you may not have heard then how about "Nobodys Fault But Mine" from the same album, Presence.. Stay safe and Keep on Rocking.

As a multi instrumentalist this song fired me up and I had to have a go at playing all the parts, separately of course I only have 2 hands sadly, it's so much fun!!! I don't sing, not without setting off the dog.
Nice to have an armchair headbanging session with you two. I like to listen to these in sequence: Rock & Roll, The Battle Of Evermore, Stairway to Heaven, Achilles Last Stand. Headphones on of course. Keep Reacting!
Maybe. You have to keep in mind that in through the out door came out after this album. The chance Led Zeppelin could have stayed on that mellower path.
@@neillenet291 Julie is correct. Page has said on many occasions he wasn't as happy with In Through The Out Door. Jones and Plant were the main writers of it, Page was fine with it as Plant wanted to do it in remembrance of his son. All of My Love was written for Karac. The album took on a theme and "Feel" because of what was happening. Jimmy said "It wasn't Zeppelin" but understood and would not interfere as it was something RP had to do. Page stated that he and Bohnam both wanted to get back to a Guitar based songs for their next album. Then of course it didn't happen as John Bohnam died (RIP).
@@dlewtweentorla1210 we'll never know. All we can do is listen to the individual members solo albums to get an idea of where they might have gone. I Listen to an album called "animals with human intelligence" by Enuff Z'Nuff And I think this is how they would have ended up sounding. Check that album out if you get a chance.
Probably because he played in bands that were not in the mainstream, The stuff he did with Funkkadelic was incredible. Brilliant guitarist. R.I.P Eddie.....
From the Presence album other great tracks are For Your Life, Nobody’s Fault But Mine and Tea For One. Or off Physical Graffiti, Ten Years Gone or In The Light Or their last album , In Through The Out Door, Fool In The Rain
The sheer quality, variation and intelligence of John Bonham's drum fills makes it the standard against which I judge any drummer. This song more than any other shows why most drummers are in absolute awe of the combination of Bonzo's power, precision and creativity.
The galloping beat in this song also inspired Heart’s Barracuda, according to their drummer. And speaking of drums, there is a drum fill around 5:58 in your video that will have drummers picking their jaws off the floor the first time they hear it. Bonzo was famous for pulling sh*t like that out of nowhere and one of the reasons he’s name-checked as one of the greatest in rock.
There's a darkness to this song as well as the entire album. And I think its meant to be there. That's the point they're trying to make. The album cover depicts there's a dark presence among us. As long as you acknowledge it there's nothing to fear ◼️
This immediately became my favorite track upon first listening to "Presence." I was a huge fan of progressive rock at the time, but I also had already been a Led Zeppelin fan since 1969 and never thought there was any contradiction between the two, despite arguments to the contrary with one of my closest friends at the time. So I felt especially vindicated by this incredibly complex and progressive masterpiece from LZ.
I had to dig deep in your history for this one, this must be close to the time I subscribed. I always forget how much I like Led Zeppelin. I think this album is a bit under appreciated. It contains one of my favorites in "Nobody's Fault But Mine."
Great call with the "Galloping" bass comment. I had the same Iron Maiden/Achilles Last Stand reaction when I first started listening to IM back in '82 (I saw them open for the Scorpions...or vice versa...cant remember)
The band had been on the road in early 75 but had to cut it short and Robert was seriously injured in a car accident and while his recovery with a foot in a boot they recorded Presence and were still red hot coming off the road and I think Robert spent most of his time in the studio on a stool.
The song is about plants accident where he broke his leg and ankle,Achilles is a vague reference to Achilles heel, he recorded Presence in a wheelchair.. The album you spoke of in the intro is 'Remasters'
2 things, This album, if I'm not mistaken, was recorded in the blink of a eye relatively speaking. Robert Plant sang it from a wheel chair, due to a broken leg, from a car accident.
My all time favorite from zep was Achilles last stand.Have you ever listened to the song Far Post by Robert Plant it was never on any albums it was a song for a movie. Very cool.
That’s a good one, but my personal favorite off that album is “Nobody’s fault but mine” hands down. And it’s funny because I was listening to a Seattle based radio show earlier today called “All Blues”, where they play everything from it’s beginning to current blues songs. Today they did a feature of “Nobody’s fault but mine” that was originally done in the late 1920’s, then again in the 40’s, in the 70’s by Led Zeppelin, and also by other artists later still. So don’t miss that off of Presence! Cheers! 🎸
Thank you so much for the reaction video. This song has always been one of my Zeppelin favorites and is an excellent example of how tight the band was. If you ever want someone to hear how good John Bonham was, this is a great choice. (Although I'm sorry, but this song is not about the Trojan War, although Achilles was a big part of "The Iliad," the classic epic by Homer which is about the war. It's instead inspired by a trip to Greece that Robert Plant and his family took, where they were in a bad car accident and Robert broke his foot so badly that they didn't know if he was ever going to walk again. And Achilles was killed by an arrow to his tendon...which is why that part of your foot is called the Achilles tendon)
This song had a very different feel from other Zep songs. It is more progressive in nature and is often overlooked by many fans. My personal favorite from this album is "Nobody's fault but mine".
Love Jimmy's layered guitar army on Achilles. Robert's vocals are perfect fit. Jonesy gave Steve Harris something to aspire to! And well, John Henry, just brings the thunder like crazy, he drives this song. I recall hearing this story of Bonzo was at a Deep Purple concert and sometime during the show, maybe right at the beginning, he ran up to the open mic and shouted something like, "I'm John Bonham from Led Zeppelin and we got a new album coming out called Presence and it's bleeping great!" Whose to say if its true but it's funny anyway! Really the whole album is worth review!
This was the year of Frampton Comes Alive and it was hard to get anything else on the radio! That being said, this did get airplay locally.......in the context of 1976.....it was a bit unusual. The Boston debut, Fleetwood Mac's new group debut, Hotel California.....Joni Mitchell.......just sayin! (Hejira album....her first with Jaco).
In reference to that galloping beat Deep Purple put that to good use back in 1970 on their In Rock album. Hard Loving Man is the track, and it closes that album.
The potential for future reactions from these guys for Lex would be something to enjoy. You have to check out their material on Presence, Physical Graffiti and In Through The Out Door to hear everything they tried after the first five albums. Also, happy belated birthday Lex!
The band: “How many fills does this song need?”
John: “Yes”
They were, are and WILL ALWAYS BE the ultimate rock band.

I had to dig deep in your history for this one, this must be close to the time I subscribed. I always forget how much I like Led Zeppelin. I think this album is a bit under appreciated. It contains one of my favorites in "Nobody's Fault But Mine."
What a sweet couple, you can tell they really love each other.
That’s so sweet of you to say! Thank you! ❤️
Back when headphones and a dark room was all you needed for the ride. That haunting intro was pure nirvana.
We took for granted back then what we thought was normal. My how music has changed since I was a teen.
Jimmy's said on more than one occasion that this is his favorite Zeppelin song, and it's definitely always been one of mine.
This is a very underrated album,it didn't sell well when it was released,I love it I think this is the best song on the album
how come? it went triple platinum in the US and platinum in the UK reaching number 1 in both charts. every zep album sold like crazy.
@@TonysmithmusicExactly!! What ARE they talking about?!
Great call with the "Galloping" bass comment. I had the same Iron Maiden/Achilles Last Stand reaction when I first started listening to IM back in '82 (I saw them open for the Scorpions...or vice versa...cant remember)
Rock music doesn't get any better than this. Superb. x
That's just what the power and the drive of a great drummer can do.. nobody could compare to this guy though. Bonham stomp..
Here for your Rush reactions but this is one of my favorite Zep songs. Great reaction!
Thank you and glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your support! :) - Lex
The band had been on the road in early 75 but had to cut it short and Robert was seriously injured in a car accident and while his recovery with a foot in a boot they recorded Presence and were still red hot coming off the road and I think Robert spent most of his time in the studio on a stool.
My favorite song...55 here and I never heard anything better
The song is about plants accident where he broke his leg and ankle,Achilles is a vague reference to Achilles heel, he recorded Presence in a wheelchair.. The album you spoke of in the intro is 'Remasters'
It was so neat watching you two listen to this song. I was like 10 when this music came out. I remember.
Very cool.
Haven’t heard it... thanks for the suggestion! :)
Led Zeppelin IS "Powah!"
Trampled Under Foot Live
Can't wait for your reactions and comments to this song
Thanks Keep Rocking 🤟
Such a cool reaction to a fantastic track :-) Well done you guys!
I always liked this song because it has a very YES sound to it.
No sabía cuánto amaba a Led Zeppelin hasta que escuché esta canción
The album ,/ Cassette you bought was the box set. It came out in 1990 I believe.
10:56 Robert's power 🤣
And that haunting guitar into - outro - most bands would have based a complete song around that riff yet Zep used it so sparingly but to great effect.
The solid section sounds like Rush mixed with Yes
I wish Rush did a cover of this song.
The potential for future reactions from these guys for Lex would be something to enjoy. You have to check out their material on Presence, Physical Graffiti and In Through The Out Door to hear everything they tried after the first five albums. Also, happy belated birthday Lex!
