On Kashmir..it sounds like he's breaking the sound barrier with those drum rolls. And that drum sound "When the levee breaks" recorded at Headly Grange is out of this world. 🔥 There will never be another Bonzo or Zep.

Let’s not undersell John Paul Jones as just reliable - his bass work is dazzling and tasteful on every track. And he provides a lot of the drive in this song. Love it!

Long reply. If whomever is reading this doesn't care for an analysis of the lyrics, ignore it. But this is my favorite ever song. Tektoniks, you are correct to bring up the accident, but I believe incorrect in suggesting the song is about Achilles. The song is not about the mythical figure, at least not directly; it's rather precisely about Plant's car accident and the circumstances surrounding it. Jamal is thus not entirely wrong when he says "Achilles Last Stand" reminds him of basketball injuries. I'm not going to analyze every line - that's impossible since some of the lyrics are likely very personal and impossible for someone to speculate about 50 years after the fact. I will only cite enough lines to prove what I've asserted above. First piece of evidence: the car accident happened in Morocco. Now, Morocco is home to the Atlas Mountains; hence the line: "The mighty arms of Atlas, hold the heavens from the Earth..." More on this later. Plant and Page liked to visit new places and seclude themselves from everyday life to draw inspiration for their songs. The album Led Zeppelin III, which is Celtic/Folk inspired was written in Bron-Yr-Aur, a remote cottage in Wales. Page and Plant were perhaps encouraged by friends or their record company to travel through Morocco. (The trip, musically, was a success. The song "Kashmir" with it's middle-eastern flavor, would also come from the trip.) And so the first lines: "It was an April morning, when they told us we should go. As I turned to you, you smiled at me, how could we say no? With all the fun to have, to live the dreams we've always had. OH THE SONGS TO SING, WHEN WE AT LAST RETURN AGAIN." (My emphasis). I get the sense Plant was not satisfied by a hum-drum, nine to five, modern life. (Perhaps why he became a rock star.) He wanted adventure: "Sending off a glancing kiss, to those who claim they know. Below the streets that steam and hiss, the Devil's in his hole. Oh to sail away, to sandy lands and other days. Oh to touch the dream, that hides inside is never seen, yeah." Imagine a busy street in a modern city, steam rising from it's sewers and exhaust from it's cars. The constant noise of brakes and horns. A small version of Hell. But Plant has a chance to visit the deserts and mountains of North Africa; to travel to not just another place geographically, but to a different age, still untouched and uncorrupted by modern life. (Sandy lands and other days.) Also hear the music matching the lyrics. The song at first begins with a rather dull, repetitive, guitar riff. But then suddenly the guitar brightens. The drums beat quickly, relentlessly. Adventure. At the very end of the song, the end of the trip, we return to the dull, repetitive guitar. So Plant and Page, finally, can escape, get in a plane and fly off. "Into the sun, the south, the north, at last the BIRDS have flown. The shackles of commitments fell, to pieces on the ground." Before Led Zeppelin was formed Page was part of a band called the Yardbirds. That band broke up, but were still on the hook for a few shows. Page brought in new musicians to fulfill the outstanding obligations, and the new line-up became Led Zeppelin. So before Zeppelin were Zeppelin, they were the Yardbirds. Now as they're driving through Morocco, Plant either gets lost and/or is driving too quickly in that search for adventure, and crashes the car, which leads to the injuries you describe, Tekt. I imagine the car fell off the road in a hilly if not mountainous area: "To seek the man whose pointing hand, THE GIANT STEP UNFOLDS. To guide us from THE CURVING PATH, THAT TURNS OUR FEET TO STONE." And of course the line which sounds as though Plant is berating and bemoaning his arrogance in driving: "I know the way, know the way, know the way, know the way." We also have at the climax of the song Plant's cries of pain from his injuries, the repeated Ohs and ahs. And the guitar too has shifted from adventure to wails of pain. The drums beat machine-gun like all of a sudden, mimicking a car's crash and roll-over. Now the central line of the song: "The mighty arms of Atlas, hold the Heavens from the Earth." Now the line is mixed, or can mean more than one thing at once. Obviously Atlas was a Titan who held the sky up in Greek myth, and so the lyric adds to the epic feel of the song. But it's not Achilles who I'm reminded of here, but rather Icarus, who flew too close to the Sun. I imagine Plant crawling out of the car, awaiting an ambulance, gazing upon the Atlas mountains. On the one hand the mountains have dashed his dreams, have stopped his trip, if not his ability to walk again, hence held the heavens from his reach. On the other hand, or perhaps at the same time, the mountains did not kill him. For they held off the heavens, the afterlife. There are of course more details to pick up on, once you know the story, but I leave that to those of you interested in listening and re-listening to this song. Excellent choice Jamal.

One thing not to be overlooked is that Jimmy Page was also the producer on all of the Led Zeppelin albums. He found the perfect group of musicians to bring his musical vision to life.
Agreed. Page will be considered one of the best ever due to his session work, music writing, guitar playing, mixing/mastering/producing and of course his vision of forming Led Zeppelin...the crowning jewel.

And “for your life”. This album was always one of my favorite bedside physical graffiti. Most people go right to early Zeppelin and overlook albums like Coda in through the outdoor and especially this one.
Apparently JPJ played it on an Alembic 8 string bass... with a pick.. Which gave it that fast percussive sound. Perfect for the song.. But then it would be with him playing it.

In my opinion this is John Bonham at his absolute best. One if the greatest drum tracks of all time. Also the bass riff on this song is incredible. This song is just so epic. Glad you got to experience this awesome tune
This track plus Fool in the rain and In My Time Of Dying are up there as well as favourites of mine. Bonham had such a unique style. Never over played but always added an exiting dynamic sound with feel to every recording they made.
The song gets going and it’s like a locomotive engine. As a drummer myself, this was always one of my all time favorites. Why it’s underrated is probably because they didn’t play it on the radio because it was too long. I love how zep never cared about time limits.

The album wasn't quite what folks expected, especially given that it followed Physical Graffiti. It was also followed by the release of The Song Remains The Same, which was basically live material from years earlier. People wanted more of the same, didn't get it with Presence, and did get it with TSRTS. As a result, not only was the album treated as an afterthought by the band, it was treated as an afterthought by the fans. In Through The Out Door, the next (and essentially last) studio album, is better remembered (despite Carouselambra).
are you thinking of Coda which was released after the had finished following Bonham's death in 1980. The album Presence was never an afterthought, it followed Physical Grafitti.

John Bonham and manager Peter Grant were in the United States riding in a limousine. Bonham tells the driver to pull into a sports car dealership. Salesman looks at Bonham whose dressed in a t-shirt and ripped jeans and says you can't afford this car. Bonham looks at Grant and says pay the man. Grant opens a briefcase filled with cash. Bonham had the car shipped back to England.
When the Stones were recording in the mid-seventies, it took them 18 days just to wait for Keith to arrive and be sober enough to play guitar. They were in the same studio in Munich and i read a story that Jagger asked Page if they made some good demos in the three weeks. Page replied something like „Demos? I got the album ready“ and Jagger wouldn‘t believe it.
This song was released in the same year that RUSH put out 2112. There is a rumor that both RUSH and LED ZEPPELIN were listening to each others music and a possible RUSH influence can be heard in this song. It is well known that both bands were fans of each others music.
Definitely one of my favorite Zeppelin tunes. Unbelievably powerful in every respect, music, lyrics, the "feel" of the song grabs you and pulls you in.

Live at Knebworth is the concert that really shows Bonham’s greatness, he really makes you feel like you’re in a battle! Unbelievable stamina they all had that night this & Kashmir were my favorites.
1982. Going home on I20 in Texas, just left city condensed, go home traffic. Picked up speed as traffic opened, Picked up speed and put this song in. Two minutes into the song, blue lights in the rear view. 92 mph in a 55 ticket, compliments of Led Zeppelin.
On holiday in America back in the winter of 2014 , i had been climbing in Colorado and decided to visit a friend in Montana then drive to Redding California to hook up with my roadie buddy , i had all of Zep on my i phone and a big bag of green , i was set , listening to Zeppelin felt like i was coming home , though English they are American and the sun the roads the people it felt right , it was if i was meant to listen to them in the perfect setting , gotta love em both , Zep and America go hand in hand , Love to you all over the pond x
This is the song they opened with in 1977 in Louisville, Ky. I was a sophomore in high school. I cried. Seeing these guys was all I wanted at the time.
This song was really hard to play live because there's so many guitars on it. Page had to use effects to get even close to the sound on the record and John Paul Jones had to play an 8-string bass. Ronnie Wood and Keith Richard saw them play it live, Keith said to Page after: ‘You ought to get another guitarist; you’re rapidly becoming known as the most overworked guitarist in the business!"
Saw them in 1977 on this tour. I was 14 years old in the rafters of Madison Square Garden, the ticket cost $7.50. Achilles Last Stand EPIC! Music to last FOREVER!!!!
re: Underrated - this track is not necessarily underrated - in fact, it ranks right up there with all of the other epics they produced. I mean, which is their greatest epic? Stairway? Kashmir? In My Time of Dying? This one? They're all #1. Perhaps what the commenter meant is that after the brilliance of the first 6 albums, this album - Presence - is often overlooked. It might not be as incredible as the first 6 albums, but there are certainly brilliant songs on there, especially this one.
Well said. Albums that don't get "normal" touring exposure (promotion), may result in lesser notoriety or get "overlooked". See my comment above with the Wiki article link for reason why their touring was cut short on this one.
Presence is indeed overlooked...I’ve heard it referred to as the “bargain bin” Zeppelin album. That’s entirely too dismissive a title for album that has this song, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, and Tea For One. There was undeniably tension in the band during the recording, as Plant had just come out of a devastating car crash that required surgery, Page being addicted to heroin at this point, and Bonham becoming a full-blown alcoholic. Perhaps that’s part of what contributed to the different feel of the album. But I still think it’s a classic, and it beats many albums that were released around the same time period.
I can still remember being a senior in high school in 85 and driving my 74 cutlass back into town after me and my friends were out drinking and smoking on the back roads and I had this song cranked up. My friends had never heard this and they were digging it especially at the 9 minute mark on this video. All being Zep fans, What Album Is This? Hell yeah!

I Never thought that this is under rated Rock and Roll at its finest. I don't want to say this is my favorite Zep song but it is tied for number 1 with about 10 other Zep songs. I been a fan since 1969 when my older brothers bought the 1st album and ripped the paint off the walls it was SO loud. I laid in bed in high school and listened on headphones every night to the Ocean,another personal favorite. 🙃
This album was recorded in Abba's studio Musicland. Robert Plant was in a car accident in Greece prior and had to do the sessions in a wheelchair. This song inspired Heart's Barracuda
What’s interesting is that Robert’s voice isn’t as strong in this album and it’s a touch flat here and there which is not like him. The wheelchair explains it. Sitting down doesn’t afford you the diaphragmatic control and support you have standing. Thanks for the comment!

Agreed. Page will be considered one of the best ever due to his session work, music writing, guitar playing, mixing/mastering/producing and of course his vision of forming Led Zeppelin...the crowning jewel.

Apparently JPJ played it on an Alembic 8 string bass... with a pick.. Which gave it that fast percussive sound. Perfect for the song.. But then it would be with him playing it.

In my opinion this is John Bonham at his absolute best. One if the greatest drum tracks of all time. Also the bass riff on this song is incredible. This song is just so epic. Glad you got to experience this awesome tune
This track plus Fool in the rain and In My Time Of Dying are up there as well as favourites of mine. Bonham had such a unique style. Never over played but always added an exiting dynamic sound with feel to every recording they made.

The song gets going and it’s like a locomotive engine. As a drummer myself, this was always one of my all time favorites. Why it’s underrated is probably because they didn’t play it on the radio because it was too long. I love how zep never cared about time limits.
A song I wish I could listen to again for the first time. The time signature changes and those drums are unbelievable.

The album wasn't quite what folks expected, especially given that it followed Physical Graffiti. It was also followed by the release of The Song Remains The Same, which was basically live material from years earlier. People wanted more of the same, didn't get it with Presence, and did get it with TSRTS. As a result, not only was the album treated as an afterthought by the band, it was treated as an afterthought by the fans. In Through The Out Door, the next (and essentially last) studio album, is better remembered (despite Carouselambra).

John Bonham and manager Peter Grant were in the United States riding in a limousine. Bonham tells the driver to pull into a sports car dealership. Salesman looks at Bonham whose dressed in a t-shirt and ripped jeans and says you can't afford this car. Bonham looks at Grant and says pay the man. Grant opens a briefcase filled with cash. Bonham had the car shipped back to England.
This album took Jimmy Page 18 days to produce,record and mix! He is a genius!
When the Stones were recording in the mid-seventies, it took them 18 days just to wait for Keith to arrive and be sober enough to play guitar.
They were in the same studio in Munich and i read a story that Jagger asked Page if they made some good demos in the three weeks. Page replied something like „Demos? I got the album ready“ and Jagger wouldn‘t believe it.

This song was released in the same year that RUSH put out 2112. There is a rumor that both RUSH and LED ZEPPELIN were listening to each others music and a possible RUSH influence can be heard in this song. It is well known that both bands were fans of each others music.

Live at Knebworth is the concert that really shows Bonham’s greatness, he really makes you feel like you’re in a battle! Unbelievable stamina they all had that night this & Kashmir were my favorites.

1982. Going home on I20 in Texas, just left city condensed, go home traffic. Picked up speed as traffic opened, Picked up speed and put this song in. Two minutes into the song, blue lights in the rear view. 92 mph in a 55 ticket, compliments of Led Zeppelin.

On holiday in America back in the winter of 2014 , i had been climbing in Colorado and decided to visit a friend in Montana then drive to Redding California to hook up with my roadie buddy , i had all of Zep on my i phone and a big bag of green , i was set , listening to Zeppelin felt like i was coming home , though English they are American and the sun the roads the people it felt right , it was if i was meant to listen to them in the perfect setting , gotta love em both , Zep and America go hand in hand , Love to you all over the pond x

This is the song they opened with in 1977 in Louisville, Ky. I was a sophomore in high school. I cried. Seeing these guys was all I wanted at the time.

This song was really hard to play live because there's so many guitars on it. Page had to use effects to get even close to the sound on the record and John Paul Jones had to play an 8-string bass. Ronnie Wood and Keith Richard saw them play it live, Keith said to Page after: ‘You ought to get another guitarist; you’re rapidly becoming known as the most overworked guitarist in the business!"

Yes, as I have matured with Zep, this has become my favorite. (After Battle of Evermore - which is the song that grounds me to planet earth).
re: Underrated - this track is not necessarily underrated - in fact, it ranks right up there with all of the other epics they produced. I mean, which is their greatest epic? Stairway? Kashmir? In My Time of Dying? This one? They're all #1. Perhaps what the commenter meant is that after the brilliance of the first 6 albums, this album - Presence - is often overlooked. It might not be as incredible as the first 6 albums, but there are certainly brilliant songs on there, especially this one.

Well said. Albums that don't get "normal" touring exposure (promotion), may result in lesser notoriety or get "overlooked". See my comment above with the Wiki article link for reason why their touring was cut short on this one.
Presence is indeed overlooked...I’ve heard it referred to as the “bargain bin” Zeppelin album. That’s entirely too dismissive a title for album that has this song, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, and Tea For One. There was undeniably tension in the band during the recording, as Plant had just come out of a devastating car crash that required surgery, Page being addicted to heroin at this point, and Bonham becoming a full-blown alcoholic. Perhaps that’s part of what contributed to the different feel of the album. But I still think it’s a classic, and it beats many albums that were released around the same time period.

I can still remember being a senior in high school in 85 and driving my 74 cutlass back into town after me and my friends were out drinking and smoking on the back roads and I had this song cranked up. My friends had never heard this and they were digging it especially at the 9 minute mark on this video. All being Zep fans, What Album Is This? Hell yeah!

I Never thought that this is under rated Rock and Roll at its finest. I don't want to say this is my favorite Zep song but it is tied for number 1 with about 10 other Zep songs. I been a fan since 1969 when my older brothers bought the 1st album and ripped the paint off the walls it was SO loud. I laid in bed in high school and listened on headphones every night to the Ocean,another personal favorite. 🙃

This album was recorded in Abba's studio Musicland. Robert Plant was in a car accident in Greece prior and had to do the sessions in a wheelchair. This song inspired Heart's Barracuda

What’s interesting is that Robert’s voice isn’t as strong in this album and it’s a touch flat here and there which is not like him. The wheelchair explains it. Sitting down doesn’t afford you the diaphragmatic control and support you have standing. Thanks for the comment!
