Variax has a different palm mute sound than traditional guitars because the pickups are in the saddles, and that's where you place your hand when palm muting. The JTV Variax models have apparently addressed this in a 1.9 firmware update to make is better, but I'm not sure if it's perfect. Also, the palm muting issue is mostly noticeable in just high gain heavy metal-esque guitar tones
Well the cool thing is that I JUST ordered a 600 a week ago, coming in 1 or 2 day! About 470 for the guitar, VDI cable, workbench cable, and XPS power supply.
Also, thanks for these videos. I was looking at the JTV models, but those are out of question in price range for me for now, and these old model seems nice even if not as tight as the new ones. I can't really pick between what type of guitar I want, because they all sound good and are better than others in some applications, but buying 4 or more guitars is way too expensive as well.
I have a ( in fact 2 ) variax 500. They sound fantastic and each setting is very different but … i play through aan accoustic amp which likes me the way to go. I dont use lots of effects and play mainly with the accoustic sounds ( 12 strings / martin / banjo / dobro ) the tele bridge , the danelectro and some rickenbaker ). If i want to use effects, i go in the roland accoustic (AC 60) with a pod xt live . It doesn t work that good if you plug this guitar direct in an iconic marshall , fender of vox because the modelled sound get trashed bij the typical sound of the electric amp.
sounds like someone is off screen fiddling with the amp settings haha does not do justice to all the reasons one owns a fender vs a gibson...modeling tech never can address the main thing about a guitar besides sound and thats feel and interface....how it feels in your hands is the main interface with an instrument...modeling amps and now guitars may SOUND like tube amps and w.e. guitar setting but they will NEVER FEEL like it and playing music for hours personally the feel is what the payer loves the feel inspires the sound you can't just skip to sound without feel first. this is why these gimmicks fail. vintage gear will never be replaced by tech.
For their price I think the old Variaxs are great. I would have to be very impressed by a James Tyler to justify the price especially when they are butt ugly! :)
I think it's better to run these through a real rig. I just don't think running a modeler into a modeler gives you much of a sound. Not that an audience would care.
The 500 looks and feels good. No more plastic than any other guitars. The 300 is from lesser quality. I sometimes think about buying a warmoth neck for one of mine variax, but in fact i dont need it, because the neck is also a very good one for me.
Sorry, guys, but no miracles exist. Have you ever heard all these instruments in real? They are different planets. Here we have the same sound just with different EQ settings. Nothing more. The sound of Les Paul intruduced in this guitar has nothing common with sound of my real Les Paul. I'm not gonna say it's a crap. No at all. For your money you get something fender-like sounding with two pedals for acoustic guitar and sitar emulation. But as I said, no miracles exist.
Not impressed its a good guitar but as far as it sounding like all theses other guitars they don't it sounds basically like the treble being turned up and down but if you bought one you would probably convince youself that they do a guitar player a lot older than I bought one of these guitars when they first came out and he was telling me all about it and I said to him having bought numerous multi effects and them telling you this sounds like this and this sounds like this I said to him I've heard it all before and his response was with a smile on his face well there not bad and I would settle for that

Is that a Peavey Bandit 112 ("silver stripe") amp in the background? I have one and they are great little amps for the Pod.
