  • Mark Peotter plays and reviews his impressions of three Alto Sax Mouthpieces from Theo Wanne. Models will be the Gaia4 HR #6, the Gaia4 Metal #6, and the Durga5 Metal #7. Listen to the differences among these mouthpieces and choose your favorite!

After making this video, I became very disappointed in the iPad's inability to restore the microphone's volume quickly after recording a loud sound (my sax). I will be sending the iPad back to Apple for a refund.

The reed replacer cap is actually great for storing your mouthpiece to prevent scratching up the table, rails and tip facing of the mouthpiece. It is surprising how most sax players don't realize how important it is to not scratch up the table, rails, and tip facing. Even if you have a cheap mouthpiece, if you want your mouthpiece to work correctly, never scratch up the table, rails and tip facing. If you ever notice that your mouthpiece doesn't respond like it use to or it now is very difficult to play in tune, check your mouthpiece for scratches or dings on those important parts of the mouthpiece. Never put a metal ligature on your mouthpiece without the reed because you will scratch up the table and rails. I just read that Theo is finally making mouthpiece caps. If you are a saxophone doubler or woodwind doubler, I highly recommend trying the Francois Louis caps with the felt attached. The felt keeps the reed wet. For me, I don't even need to add water to the felt.... the wetness of the reed stays perfect for me when I use the FL cap with felt. I tried wetting the felt with water at first, but that actually made the reed water-logged. I learned to just put the FL cap on after warming up the reed. Some saxophonists that use very hard reeds, like to water-log their reeds, so we always have to find what works for us.

@markwhite1632 Thank you for your advice and insight! I am happy to hear the Theo Wanne will be making a "real" mouthpiece cap! And yes, it is very important to avoid scratches on every surface where the reed will touch.

Has anyone tried mouthpieces by Aaron Drake? Like Theo Wanne, they are very easy to play in all registers, dynamics, and with great intonation. But Drake mouthpieces are about 2/3 the price of Theo Wanne! th-cam.com/video/10FuthKRayw/w-d-xo.html
