I have always liked Theo's mouthpieces and how much time and effort he has put into the design of each mouthpiece. The Earth sounds responsive and bright, not as bright as the Fire. Out of the three you played, I liked the Gaia 3 the most.
About a year ago I was looking to change up from the Selmer C* on my tenor to a larger tip opening and decided to dive in with a Theo Wanne Slant Sig 7*. It was brighter than I imagined and has taken a while to settle on reed strength/type and it has helped reveal some technique laziness, but I'm really in love with it! Trying mouthpieces is tricky because it does take time to explore what each one has to offer, probably more time than we can spend in a shop. Living in Australia with fewer places to even try different makes it harder to research in person. I was interested in how these four changed your tone Jay, more than I'd noticed in other reviews e.g. Otto Link styles; particularly liked the Earth and Durga tones. All the best for the lucky winners.
I watched your other Theo Wanne videos and I ordered a few mouthpieces to try. I play concert band and have never explored jazz mouthpieces much less metal mouthpiece. Earth changed my WORLD! And Gaia gives me everything my classical mouthpiece does and more! It's been impossible for me to choose the best mouthpiece for me. Thank you for your video and for sharing the gift of Theo Wanne mouthpieces. They're amazing!
Have played on nothing but a Selmer S80 D for 40 years, and just bought the Durga 5 (6 tip). I LOVE this thing. Never really worked on altissimo before and all of a sudden, with some effort, it's happening. YIPPEE!
Hello and thank you for the chance to win such a wonderful mouthpiece. I’m playing on an Theo Wanne tenor mouthpiece (Ambika 2) and I love it. The Durga 4 is really great. I hope not only when you’re playing on it. Best wishes to you all from Berlin, Germany - Angie
Jay, there is one thing that most people miss when it comes to mouthpieces. If you like your mouthpiece and want to boost it a little more, have the mouthpiece balanced. Very few repairmen can balance a mouthpiece properly. Luckily I found someone who claimed he could. I had him show me how he did it and he wasn't bluffing. I had him balance three of my mouthpieces. It really brought out that something extra.
I have talked about that in other videos. When dealing with such high quality mouthpieces such as these there is no need for any further balancing. They are made to very high standards of precision which factors into the price.
Hi, my is Eko from Indonesia. I've never played saxophone before because I saw your video and encourage me to learn it and right now I'm buying a cheap saxophone (but for me it's s already expensive).
Theo Wanne earth. I got the 7 for alto sax i am a beginner but whst a difference the mouthpiece makes to my sound. For one I like how it makes my sax sounds and its for contemporary music as well as other types of music, which is good as I have many different musical tastes. For a beginner yes its a bold move but I love the sound and though I have 1.5 reeds I find the 2 reeds are a lot better fit for me. I got a slight chest infection at the moment so my practice has stopped but can't wait to get back at it. I have got the keyleaves as well also got some silca gel packs for my saxophones case to help with keeping the sax away from any moisture while I cant play. The reed's are kept separate of course. Keep safe everyone and hopefully we all will have happy new year ahead.
Love your channel man! I think it’s really cool that you’re doing this and giving some people that may not have the opportunity to get something this nice, a chance to win this. Thanks for the amazing content!
I love my new alto Theo Wanne Durga 5 mouthpiece! My first metal mouthpiece! That's the sound I was looking for! And, oddly, my abundant saliva, which cause me normally some trouble, here seems to me more freely evacuated. I do not regret my purchase!
I watch all your videos playing. I'm telling you using the theo wanne mouthpieces make your sound more interesting...especially the Durga. If I have a chance to sneak into your studio I'll only steal some mouthpieces lolll 😆 kouz you won't notice I can't believe you have so many of them on the back!!
As a Meyer style player, I was not really interested in these till I heard that Durgaa. It has such a rich sound for a metal mouthpiece. Thanks for showing these off. As a Jazz and Rock/Funk player, it really sounds like something that would add to my sound.
The earth mouthpiece sings! The first 2 were ok in that they sounded a little uncontrollable, kind of like a dukoff (sp) but these are warmer. The earth seemed so easy to play and the sound was controlled, big, warm and with a nice cutting sound! Beautiful! I can't wait to see you demo the Tenor pieces!!!! As far as the cost is concerned, I have had my Borgani tenor for over 15 years. As soon as I played it I knew. That's only $300 a year!!! Or less than a buck a day. Now I don't have the need for everything in Jay's studio, even though I wish I had, but I'm usually a one type of saxophone at a time kinda guy and I play them for ever. So when you find what your looking for, ya should make the investment.
Jay, you should review the "Selmer SAS280 La Voix 2". This is the model I am seriously considering purchasing, but I am honestly not sure. The price often fluctuates between 1700-2500.
berglarsen.com/mouthpieces.html Check their special promotions page, they sell mouthpieces half price if they have cosmetic damage on the neck (how I got my tenor mouthpiece).
Amazing review!! Thank you very much! Also my favorite was the Durga. I bought my Durga for Bari and I’m excited to see what it sounds and feels like on alto!
I have been using a Meyer for 10 years. So when I try to play a metal mouthpiece for contemporary music, I couldn't find a best one. Maybe Durga will be what I wanted and perfect answer.
Theo Wanne is a Mouthpiece Master! He really has an encyclopedic knowledge of mouthpieces and it shows in the quality and performance of his products. They're worth every penny! Time to save up some money!
Hello Jay, To be honest, I really like Earth and Fire mouthpieces with 15% reduction on the price makes all of them more accessible. If I had a higher budget I would go for Gaia 3. I am really impress with them. I have the impression that the sound of all of them is quality and rich. I love the 'Give Away' not only for the contest but also gives us a good description. Great stuff.
Great video, Jay! I recently changed my alto set up to the Durga 4 from the Jody Jazz DV and it’s absolutely lush! I can hit the altissimo with pin point accuracy. I love sweetness I get in the mid and low ranges too👌❤️
Follow your testing result, I bought “EARTH” mouthpiece yesterday. I feel so glad that it’s very easy to manage with super bright sound than using Yamaha 4C. I got Japan made Yamaha YAS62 (iv) and use EARTH for different styles of music. It really make me to gain breakthrough! Thank you for your recommendation!
Just bought the Earth model. Thanks for the discount! I really hope the tip opening doesn't give me any issues. I've been playing on the Jean Paul as-400 mouthpiece, but I've been playing for about 6 years so who knows.
Jay, are you going to demo the tenor version of the mouthpieces or are the same as the alto...or did you already review the tenor. If so, where can I find the link to that video. Thanks.
After playing on my Selmer C** for a half century on my Buffet Crampon Dynaction Alto, I can't imagine changing mouthpieces. Only winning this contest will ever convince me if advances in mouthpiece design will change my sound for the better. Cause like Jay says, "They are about expensive as it gets!"
These Theo wanne mouthpieces are gorgeous. Love the Gaia metal, but as a returning player (with £50 in the bank), I think I’m going to give it until Christmas 2021 to build up the strength to play a 7 baffle, considering I’m still using the 4c that came with the sax
Haha... I love Better Sax and don't begrudge Jay's success at all, but the company that run the comps insist on knowing everything about me before the entry is accepted.... talk about data harvesting.....!! Should I be worried?
Your playing on Those mouth pieces sounded amazing! They are on my wish list for sure. One day when I grow up in my playing. I know I'll get there under better sax tutelage.
I have the previous version of the HR GAIA...love it!! Totally agree with the altissimo limitations...Compared to my metal Oleg, the OLEG plays in the altissimo very easily.

Like the Theo Wanna since I have seen them on internet would love to try one on my sax. Great looking and sounding mouth-peaces will fit nice with my sax.
Hi Jay, I wounder if you could tell me a little about the Duga 3. I cant see one on the website. Is the Alto Duga3 gold metal with tip open 5. A good one ? Or is it not a popular one ?
Can you do a comparison between the DURGA and the SHIVA for bari? I’m wanting to buy a Theo Wanne mouthpiece but I don’t know the difference between them. I’m looking for the darker sound and easy response, the Otto Link STM that I have isn’t really doing it for me.
Hi Jay, I am so glad to see you test out the Durga 4, as I have just bought one for my soprano ( yani 992 curve). I like it because it is a smaller feel in the chops, As a beginner, I am blowing it every day for a week now but my low g squeak with 2.5 & 3 Vandoren black box. At first no squeak, but 15-20 later any tip will greatly appreciate?
Wow Thanks Jay...you are a very good man that you want to do a giveaway. Thanks for making a lot of tutorial videos that i could learn for. If I win the mouthpiece from giveaway, I will practice and learn more on saxophone. Cheers and Goodluck!!!
Hey Jay, can you please do a Theo Wanne Bari mouthpiece review video. I really love the sound and I'm looking to upgrade. But I'm torn between Theo Wanne and Jody Jazz
Your videos have inspired me to start learning the saxophone! I have recently bought the Ammoon Eb Alto Sax, completely understand it is entry level however, seeing your comparison video it did produce a fairly good sound. Assuming a better mouth piece would improve this sound? Thanks!
If someone could respond, I’d appreciate it: of these three choices (neck, mouthpiece and reed), which is more likely to be the culprit for someone who is having trouble bending a note upward? With the slightest attempt, the horn drops to the low register and “honks”. Thanks
Jay, you sound so great on all those mouthpieces! Your control of the instrument, sound, and intonation are really impressive. I noticed those pieces all happened to have the same tip opening, but they seemed to have pretty drastically different internal designs. Did you feel like they all had about the same blowing resistance, or did you use different reeds for different pieces?
Tip opening is usually the best measure for how much air you can put through a mouthpiece and which reed strength is best. The other variables make a difference though. I used the same reed on all of these.
I know this is kinda random, but I don’t know what tip size I should buy for future mouthpieces. I’m a freshman and I play alto but I’ve had the Yamaha 4c for a while and I’m looking to upgrade to a cheaper and good sax mouthpiece. I just don’t know what tip opening I should get and in general what mouthpiece to get.
Fantastic! They all seemed to have really great sound, maybe it was the spunky demo song you chose. You sounded truly stoked for these MP's. Thanks for a fun review and good demo. I still need a new bari sax (gotta save up for that) so I hope I can win the MP (trade in for a bari MP with Theo hopefully). Rock on!
Got a nybros Theo recently for alto. It’s like a suped up Meyer with a slight step baffle. Would have liked to see this one too in your review. But if you do a tenor review get the slant sig 2. It’s the most impressive mouthpiece I’ve played on any sax.
Before I played on clarinet, I like Backun instruments and mouthpieces but I never win in their games. Now I play on saxophone. Maybe I couldn’t win on your game but I still love Theo Wanne sound ))))) and many thanks for share this game
Thanks for another great video. I have been looking at the Earth model to bridge between concert band, jazz and pop settings. How would you compare the Earth model to your NY Meyer? Also the Durga vs your NY Meyer?
The Earth is very different from the NY Meyer not easy to compare them. Same with Durga. The Gaia 3 is most similar to the NY Meyer out of these, but it is more free blowing, a bit less resistant, and has more power while still getting a very similar traditional jazz sound.
Hello, Jay, I have some questions about Mouthpieces. I use Claude Lakey 7*3 classic jazz (hard ruber), have power sound, like the bright. It's like a metal sound...but the material it's not the best...have desgast.... can you please send me some tips, for swith for a best up grade sound. Tks
Thank you for the comparison! Here's a list, where you can find the different mouthpieces in the video:
2:38: Earth
4:30: Fire
5:56: Durga
8:10: Gaia
Durga the clear winner. Bright, clear, focused with some deeper warmer overtones
I have always liked Theo's mouthpieces and how much time and effort he has put into the design of each mouthpiece. The Earth sounds responsive and bright, not as bright as the Fire. Out of the three you played, I liked the Gaia 3 the most.

Rock on!
Christ these mouthpieces are so pretty!
Ya do the tenors. Please include details on the chambers. I'm finding that the chamber is at least as important as the baffle. Thanks Dick
Ok noted.
All of those mouthpieces sound extremely bright, but the Gaia was my favorite.
Jay is it a good idea if a beginner play a metal mouthpiece? Im a beginner and still confused to get a hard rubber pr a metal. Thank you jay
Have a question. How long have you been playing saxophones?
Edit: I might be dumb but I still ask
What do you think about durga 2? Is there any different between durga 2 and 4? *metal mp
What’s the name of the piece you are playing? I just loved the way you play the piece.
Tks
Try the BetterSax Burnin’ mouthpiece. You’ll love it.
