😂 "If you want to create a removable high-baffle for your saxophone mouthpiece, here's a quick method that works well! Take an old soprano reed, and if you're working with a tenor mouthpiece, placing the tip side of the reed faciing the mouthpiece tip rail -to replicate a step-baffle. This design boosts airflow speed, giving you a louder, edgier tone. Turn the reed flat side up, cut it to your desired baffle length, and wedge it in the mouthpiece, leaving a small gap from the tip. ( You can as well adjust the height ),cut a small size of a used wine cork as a secondary wedge to place underneath the end part of the reed for extra support, and secure both it with a small amount of shoe contact cement for a firm bond. This setup mimics the characteristics of high-baffle mouthpieces, offering more projection and brightness for genres like rock or funk. Hope this helps! 🎷" That's how i turned my large chamber ,low baffle 0.115 to a heavyweight .. best you can file down the soprano reed edges so that the baffle goes down more into the mouthpiece to reduce the brightness 😂

Great comparison! Very helpful for those of us trying to learn more about microphones. I do agree with your top two. Playing them together was very interesting, and it did sound great! I would think that the audio technic just isn’t very good for recording saxophone?

    • @MarkPeotter

@paulandrobin1 My Audio Technica dynamic mic has little boost in the high midrange. Maybe Audio Technica wanted to help a singers voice cut through a live band? Saxophone has so many complex overtones, so I prefer my Neumann for recording that.

Very helpful - thanks!! Btw - I had an unusual issue where my reed wouldn’t play properly in the lower register, with sound cutting out. @@MarkPeotter it was convex at the base, where reed touches the flat surface of the mouthpiece. And severely so! I could tell by how reed shavings came off on the reed geek, all in the middle, none at the edges. It wasn’t producing a proper seal, so when I flattened it the air could go through consistently. Most of my attempted fixes don’t go this smoothly!

I was wondering if you would have an opportunity to listen to my sound and tell me what you think perhaps could be the reason for it? I would suggest trying to re-set your lower lip slightly less inside your mouth - move your lip about a quarter inch forward on your lower teeth, and set the reed there. See if you like it. You should hear an even bigger tone, with easier low notes, and easier high notes. If there is any shrilly-ness, it was not evident in the recording. I am suspecting that you are just becoming accustomed to hearing this radical change in your tone due to the radical bright overtones in the Sanborn mouthpiece. Rock on!
