- I thought I would never buy another mouthpiece again, yet here we are, trying out the Theo Wanne Durga 4! In all honesty, I've thought about upgrading to larger facing for a while now (from Jody Jazz 7* to Theo Wanne 8) to see if I would notice a difference, it has been 8 years since I purchased the Jody Jazz after all- Watch the whole video to see if it makes a difference and let me know if you can hear anything!

Side note, I did not pay full price for either mouthpiece. Back in 2012, Jody Jazz offered "B stock" mouthpieces (issues with small things such as paint, etc, things that do not affect the performance) that could save you a lot of money if you are looking to purchase- you may have to reach out directly now as I didn't see that availability on their page last I checked
As well with the Durga, Theo Wanne offers a few discounts if you can find them- one being 15% your first order and others.
Both are great higher end saxophone pieces and I wanted to find out which one I liked more! Hope you enjoy- feel free to hop around the video if you're not a saxophonist shopping for a mouthpiece.

Hey Kenny, It's Jody - Thanks for the thoughtful review. Here's what I'm hearing - that the DV 7* needed just a little harder reed compared to the reed on the Durga 8* - and yes you were right that an 8* DV would have been a better side by side comparison. But I'm hearing a little more brightness and power from the Durga which leads me to believe that you might really love a Super Jet 8*. I'd like to hear that comparison with the Durga. Like you said - all good mouthpieces. Thanks again.
This is so cool, Jody Espina himself posted on your video!! He makes beast mouthpieces, I have owned one but a good friend I sold the alto too bagged me to include the mouthpiece.. I should have kept it..
I was wondering this myself, I see a lot of comparisons between the Durga and the DV but the I'd love to hear a side by side of the with the Super Jet

glad you don't noticeably edit your audio for the playtests like some other people do.
You might want to try a lighter reed on the durga. I've had both and the jody needs stupidly hard reeds to play right. When I switched to the durga I had to do down a full size.
Since this video I switched to a size 3 and it made a world of difference! A lot less resistance. I definitely want to do a follow-up video about the two mouthpieces and hopefully be able to try the Jody in the same facing
It is so hard to distinguish between different and better. It takes a long time to really ease into your gear and really understand the nuances of new equipment.
Yeah I can tell in the comparison I was actively trying to work out all the new kinks on the new mouthpiece- I may do a follow-up review some time down the line

Soprano sax requires specialty mpc. I recently bought a Jody Jazz hr. Of all my soprano pieces the Jody gets the job done for projection and intonation.
Also control. Try the Jody hr, it’ll complete any soprano (for jazz setup)

I like your tone. Just wanted to point out that typically The larger the mouthpiece tip opening, the softer the reed strength you would need in order to compare the reed response of the mouthpiece. Not sure what the facing was on your DV, perhaps a 7? If I switch from a 7 to an 8 I usually have to go down half a reed strength. The only way to scientifically compare these 2 mouthpiece brands is to compare a #8 DV with a #8 Durga. But since you don’t have the 2 mouthpieces with the same facing, I would simply try the Durga with several different reed brands and strengths until you find the best reed for that mouthpiece. Btw have you tried Rigotti jazz reeds? I find they are much more consistent than Vandoren.

You play super great! Right around the 5 minute mark of the video, the Brecker licks, I notice 2 things. 1. You are opening your throat more with the Durga to force it to sound darker, like your Jody. 2. The reed is becoming "confused" over which mouthpiece taper it should conform to. Time to get a new reed before you continue testing.

What facing do you use for the DV? And so far I'm super impressed with the Durga, I might do another review a month down the line- I'd want to be sure to try the larger facing in the DV too
Kenny Fong the tip opening is a 7* and the table had some work done to it by Theo Wanne. The table had some weird corrosion so my reeds wouldn’t seal properly

I tried a friends Theo wanna mouthpiece one time and I felt like you could literally blow into it without even trying to have good embouchure and the sound that would come out was consistently similar. I kinda felt like that made it lifeless for me.
I own a Durga 3 and I think I understand what you mean. I picked up sax again after many years and was basically starting new. The first thing I noticed on the Durga when I first started, was that I was not able to bend the note at all, like all range of my embouchure and the sound just simply does not change. I switched to the stock mouthpiece again and I can do that with ease like I used to. I still struggle to really bend the note with the Durga tho not as much. Maybe because I got used to the Durga now, or I was just inexperienced again or the reed was too hard.
Definitely try a wider opening; try 8*, even 9. Only then the jazz mouthpieces reveal their secrets, so to speak. You won't regret; Jody's mouthpiece will open up and sound like it has a larger chamber, and Theo's will deliver more nuances in no. 9. I think Theo has a way of designing mouthpiece chambers which are larger and more complex than usual. So even with high baffle Durga, the result is alluring, complex, addictive sound.
I found used Durga 4 for tenor, tip opening 7*, at a very attractive price. I was thinking of buying it, but maybe I should spend more money for the bigger opening?
@@7quercus77 6, 7 and 7* is what everybody is buying, and the reason why everyone sounds the same. I admit that some players, physically, can't use wider opening because they can sustain and control the air column only with narrow opening. They then usually play 5 or 6. But if you can play 7*, you can certainly play 8* or 9. There is a little period of getting used to it; better to say, it is a period of relaxing your mouth and slowing down breaths. As paradoxical as it sounds, the wider the opening, better control you will have. Especially if you have a slightly cheaper, mid-range horn; it's no sin not be able to get a premium horn that can take anything - medium level horns can sound incredible with wider openings - like an all new instrument.
It's worth trying, and it's the cheapest saxophone upgrade ever.
You play with the exact same setup as me. same reed(red java) same mouthpiece (dv and durga) same ligature (FL) same saxophone even the same saxholder.

had a JodyJazz DV Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece and the gold on reed table started corroding, really upset about that for as much as the mpc cost. so went to theo wanne mpc's and never looked back. the gaia seems to be my focus now.
Nice review! In reading Theo Wanne's marketing rhetoric, one gets the impression that the Druga 4 is "Dexter Gordon meets Michael Brecker." So, I was surprised to hear an exclusively contemporary sound here. Would you say that the D4 produces a huge sound that isn't showing up on uTube? Thanks...
Hey! I'd say yes, there is a lot of sound that you as a viewer are unable to hear due to auto-balancing from TH-cam and my editing software. I'd argue the D4's ability to make a huge sound is what I love the most about it, I feel I can cut through easier on my pop gigs when necessary now, as I'm much louder acoustically!
@@saxofong Thank you! I say the same thing about my Francois Louis, but it's less contemporary by design. On another note, do you really attribute the Durga to the 4th octave notes? I'm a straight ahead player and don't really do that, but it's interesting nonetheless.
Park City Utah? I played the DV for several years before I ever found one that compared, and it was a Theo Wanne (don't remember the model).

I have always wondered if there is a relationship between price and performance related to mouthpieces? If so, what are you paying for? Hans (Tenor player and professor of economics).
Hi Hans, Kirk Whalum argues that it's more about the player than the gear, and I'd agree. Generally if you give me a saxophone and mouthpiece I'll still sound like me eventually, as I have a specific saxophone sound worked out in my head. However, I'd argue the mouthpiece is the most important in fine tuning a specific sound, which is pop and soul for me. So while it's more important for the player to practice and improve their overall musicianship, the mouthpiece helps me create a specific tone wand aids in making a lot of little things easier for me personally (in this case: volume, overtones, and a brighter, more "pop" tone)
The jody jazz sound fuller. But the TW is probably easier and more fun to play, I would guess.

I’m tempted to try the Durga size 8 on my YTS 82Z as I’m still playing on the old Selmer S80-C mouthpiece that I got with the very old Conn I was given in 1984! Figure its about time for an upgrade! The ligature set up kinda looks complicated though do you need screwdrivers every time you want to take out or put in a reed?
Great question! The ligature stays attached, the screwdrivers are for if you'd like to move the ligature up or down, I've left it the same place since I've gotten the mouthpiece and have been very happy. Definitely would recommend trying it! As someone stated somewhere in the comments, I'd recommend a softer reed if you do try switching- Since this video I moved to an 3 (down from 3 1/2) and it eliminated a lot of the resistance issues I was having in this video

Jody Jazz pieces are really free blowing I’m surprised you used same reed. Both mouthpieces sound good. Jody is better for smooth jazz. In the R&B style in your gig the Durga will bring the full thick sound. I think the difference is in the chamber size. Most Theo pieces have large chambers.
I agree 100%. I have since switched to size 3 reeds and it made a huge difference on the Durga- I'd like to do a follow-up video now that I've had time to adjust!! 🎷 Thanks for checking out the video

The Durgas are nice pieces, but the prices are a rip off. I suppose they have to make the money back on all that marketing they do. We’re paying for making the Theo Wanne famous.
why do so many tenor players play high notes well above the normal range of the horn ? I've been a player for many years (over 50 now !) and I'm fine with a range to about high G ! Play

Personnal preferences. Depends what you need / want. They're all good, no one is better, it's just different.
I fully agree. Have listend the several different tests and the Jody DV sounds fuller, fatter, sweeter than the Durga every time
