      Eq pedal is 100% needed for these types of amps and most if your looking to get a an approximate tone through a 1x12 vs a huge monster expensive chain. You won't get 100% but EQ Pedal would have go rid of that flub. I use one when I can't get an amp "just right"

    • @rhystaylor8634
      @rhystaylor8634 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, it sounded very muddy when played out of the mix, though in saying that it sounded OK in mix. But yeah less muddy Distortion and qn EQ pedal needed

      @@CiciVonStrangelove It was nice hearing Cliff’s lines so clearly for once. However, the guitar tone just didn’t cut it. That was 100% the amp. The moment he chose it I shook my head feeling bad for Dave and the inevitable struggle he was about to have. You can go super cheap on the guitar and pedals but not the amp.

    • @warhead5809
      @warhead5809 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Nowadays? It is actually pretty easy to replicate. Buy a modelling amp or some multifx pedal thingy, select MESA recto or MESA Mark simulation, scoop the mids, adjust the eq and voilà - you have a metallica-ish guitar tone. Certainly better than this crap they have showed us.

    As soon as I saw the fender amp was chosen for James, my expectations were not gonna be high for this. It would probably have been the last amp I would have chosen for this 😂. It did great for the cleans but that’s about it. Well done on the bass stuff.

    • @voss451
      @voss451 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      It's one thing to do this 'on a budget' but there's a difference between 'we're gonna pick some gear and play songs by -----' and ACTUALLY trying to sound like the artist.
      Using the LTD was a step in the right direction but the Fender was a huge mistake. Even a Line 6 amp would have been more in the ballpark than using a Fender combo and a Behringer distortion pedal.

      Sorry but that amp all by itself on the metal channel dialed in can take on most Metallica sounds minus the Justice sound really, as James used two amplifiers, a mark 2 and a Mesa Boogie combined so yeah, tough sound to recreate, but that fender amp is what I use and can take on whatever I throw at it and I've been playing for over 20 years so indeed fender makes great amps.

    • @shanebiggs1888
      @shanebiggs1888 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got away from pedals a long time ago for this very reason. None had the same tone and feel as straight from the amp.

  • @greevar
    @greevar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    If you really want to do the Hetfield sound, you need a 5/6 band EQ to scoop the mids. Lambchopper showcased the EQFH (EQ From Hell), which is a absurdly powerful parametric EQ. He was able to get several different tones from Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, etc.

    • @jmed99
      @jmed99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The scooped mids EQ thing only works on Mesa Mark-series amplifiers, because Mark-series amplifier have inherently tons of mids. If you do that scooped V shape on EQ in almost any other amplifier all you will get is a muddy as sh!t tone. Of course, unless the amplifier itself has tons of mids. I used to think that you need to scoop the mid until I went through a Mark IV, Mark V and the JP2C.

    • @Habixus
      @Habixus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look up the latest video from Jim Lil about amp tones. It's crazy! Basically all the famous amp sounds are just a mix of EQs and gain stages in different orders and how many there are.
      He swaps the order around and it results in a Vox, Fender and Marshall sound!
      So what you're saying makes total sense! Put a powerful EQ in front of the amp and it will be able to bend the sound very efficiently to what you want.

    Wow, Cici really mastered the intensity of all the riffs they chose!
    I've tried out the fender amp Dave used. It can play cleans loud, but wasn't great for getting muted chugs like the type JH is known for.

    A Nux Plexi Crunch pedal will get you close to the tones on the first couple of albums. A Boss Metal Core will get you the tones from Master and Justice. As far as guitars you can't go wrong with an Esp Ltd with EMG pickups. The bass sounded fine.

      Another vote for the Nux. They do a mesa style pedal that would also be a good choice.

      Ditto on the active EMG pickups. You gotta have'em

      nah, you totally can substitute the EMGs with pedals. just compress the shit out of the signal untill theres no dynamics left and you got your EMG style tone from any passive.
      Yes to the marshall-in-a-box, which ever you like to choose. would have done better than the behringer metal zone clone.
