Hey primal, i had a little crazy thought. How a bout a 1 Gf=1 character Run. Like, u can just use 1 GF on 1 active member the whole game along. I thought, there are 16 GFs, how to divine them in 4 quarters with 4 chooseable GF for 1 person. You can only junction one, when u fill up the quarter. So 3 of ur GF quarters are in use. Could be a funny Run. How do you think? Maybe someone add some ideas into...

Surprised you didn't just use the boost ability for way more damage
“GFs only” is basically the way 10 year old me played this game at launch before I understood the Junction system at all. I couldn’t get past Edea at the end of Disc 2. I never actually beat the game until roughly 20 years later 😅
15 year old me basically did the same. I managed to reach Lunatic Pandora thanks to Arnica. I could not beat Seifer though. I beat the game years later abusing Renzokuken 😅
Same lol. I was 10 when this game came out. I skipped all the tutorials so never understood the junctions at all 🤣

@@adventureoflinkmk2 snap I was exactly the same - Rinoa basically wrecked my whole strategy. Got a game shark almost entirely for this

Hell yeah, I remember wasting many hours just to hang out in Winhill listening to the music. Watching the intro scene still gives me good chills to this day. 😊
Same, FF8 was my first FF game, and still probably my most played, with FF10 being right behind it

Omega Weapon? Using only Summons? It would be impossible I guess. I don't see any way to survive the merciless onslaught long enough.
@christiang1781 Yeah even if you ignore all of Omega's other attacks, the GFs would not be able to survive terra break

This may be something for a futures Challenge, Beating FF12 Zodiac ags with only 1 character used, (you can use any character you want upon unlocking all, tho I guess the most interesting to use for this would be Fran since she has the lowest overall stats)(You can also spice this up yourself if it may be to easy, anyways would love to see a ff12 challenge run :) )
Or if true madness is due, FF12 Zodiac age all characters 9999HP and 999MP upon lvl99 (which is a HEAVY grind due to how lvl up HP+MP stat gain is handled).

I've never seen such determination, truly. FF8 was my first RPG with the PlayStation and made me love the final fantasy series and RPG in general. Thanks for such a fun video!!

"Eden is one of only 3 things in the game that can break the damage cap."
This is not correct. There are 5:
1) Eden GF Summon
2) Shockwave Pulsar Blue Magic
3) Level 100 Cactuar GF Summon
4) Kamikaze Ability
5) Chocobocle Chocobo World Ability
I don't blame anyone for forgetting/not knowing about #5, but there's really no excuse for whatever the 4th one that was ignored was, especially if you are going to make definitive declarations of fact like "only X many things in the entire game that can do Y."
Not sure how this video came on my suggested list but it’s amazing. FF8 is my favorite game of all time and I’ve seen a ton of challenges on it, nothing quite like this. Awesome stuff, going to check out more of your videos.

Ok that run was insane and amazing to watch. Major props to clearing this. Love the Daph edits as well so goodjob to her as well for editing this video. I had no idea that Eden could even get boosted to do 60k damage, I never really use GFs when I play the game.
Now the real question what was worse? Ultima Weapon Summons only, or Ozma Trance only?
yea 60k is the damage cap in ff8 and eden is the only thing that can hit it, as for the worst ultima weapon hands down
@@Primalliquid92 Yeah I knew he broke the damage cap (tho I don't know the other two as you mentioned 3) but I didn't knew he caps at 60k.
Can't wait for you to tackle the next super boss in a challenge run and get equally shafted, lets see if there is something worse then Ultima Weapon with GFs only then.
that was the way I played when I was 12 but got punished very hard in sorceress adel fight.

FF8 will always have a special place in my heart. My 13 year old me first played it in 2013, probably took like a week to complete, which to this day I still have no idea how I did it despite not knowing a single word of English back then. The only "walkthrough" I had at the time was from reading notebook pages that my overly enthusiastic close friend wrote down detailing where to go, what to farm, boss move set ... etc in a very comical way. I'll never forget how my younger me totally had a crush on Rinoa when I first saw her at the dance scene with Squall, how I summoned Shiva more than any other GFs because of how sexy she is, or the "emptiness" I felt as the credit draws when realizing that the journey has come to an end. Seeing you playing one of my favorite games always brings me joy and I hope you will continue to revisit ff8 from time to time.

Hey, I attempted a run like this on my first ever playthrough, completely by accident. I ended up having to restart at Ultimecia, and it pissed me off SOOO much 😆.

Lol thats the way i first played ff8 in my childhood, the animation back in the days were impressive and i didnt meet a single guy who undestood the junction system in his first gameplay

Since 8 is one of the FF I know least of, I had no idea it would be this hard, heck even impossible in some parts. But I have to say, well-F-ing-DONE!!! Cant believe after all this , you are doing 2 playthroughs os 8 at same time haha.
That said, you should add how many hours you spent doing the challenge at the end, just to scare us.

You should do FFX with only summons. And when no summons just the Attack option in buttons.
When I first played it i thought: How else you you beat that game. But I am playing this once every year and it can be done with just normal attacks too ^^

When you were fighting ultima weapon I was thinking wouldn't it help to get Phoenix to maybe give you random second chances if the party wipes, it wasn't until the Iron giant portion that I remembered that you get Phoenix via the Phoenix pinion, ie an item. Good reminder that its been too long since I played this game.

My first ever playthrough of FF8 I relied heavily on summons. They were the biggest, easiest way to do damage in most cases. And this was on release so no guides, no Eden nothing. I didn't have end game weapons. Really didn't understand the game well. But I got to Ultimecia and could not beat her no matter what I did. I ended up scrapping that whole save and started the game over and built my characters to never need to summon a GF again because of that last boss fight. Walked in with Aura and everyone's best weapons and limit breaks and just ended her. It was rather cathartic.
I’d love to see you try XII with no license board, XIII-2 with no monsters or VI with no magitek shards
I did this challenge run on my first ever playthrough when I was 11, because I saw how cool ifrits animation was and then never used anything else ever again. Never finished it but did get to disc 4

To sum up if it's possible.... I'm pretty sure most of us did it this way if you were a kid when the game came out.
Personally I remember telling my dad my GF's were all close to level 100 and I was only level 20.
He was pretty confused and this was of course the time before low level play was the way to go, but ya kid me definitely set up a great endgame that was so simple because Summons gave you at least 2 hp bars and did massive damage... they are pure win 🏆
level 100 summons and party members at level 20 is impossible because they still require normal EXP like the characters do

I may be off on the levels but I remember training on the beach running quetzalcoatl as the only thing killing and then fighting the Trex with Shiva before ever going to Dollet and since the Xp boost on kills only went to the GF (and as a kid letting the other party member die to save time on button masshing)
But your right I could totally be off. Was pretty sure maxing out a GF was about 50,000 XP and the Player was around 100,000 XP so only using GFs to get the final hit (with the Xp boost for last hit) and letting the other party member die I feel like the numbers might not have been too far off 😅

Ah yes. I figured the adel one on a casual play too. Blasting Zone hitting both, killing both taking a win too.

This is pretty much how I played through the game the first time when it came out. I didn't understand the system at the time and found GF were the only thing that did decent damage. I wasn't as strict as this but for the most part it was a GF only run due to my ignorance at the time. The hardest fight was when Rinoa was stuck in Adel. I almost rage quit the game as a kid. This run here was much smoother than my first frustrating play of the game.
I still play this regular every few years or so, because it's a lot of fun. Frustrating plot holes aside, it doesn't ruin the game.
Using only summons?
How do you think I did it before I learned how to junction?
I really mean that btw. I got to the aliens on the ratnarok before my friend who was an ff8 expert took over. Killed the aliens. Took the ragnarok straight to the islands of heaven and hell and within an hour gave me 3 characters with a lot of 100 level magic as well as the Lion Heart.

The Ultima fight section was tense. Really keeps the story telling on edge there. I do want to try this challenge, but I almost want to try it as a randomizer run too. xD I'll get back to ya on that.
I forgot Ult can insta kill GFs because I never use them in the fight. o.o I see where that can be a bitch, jesus

I got all the way to the final boss with only using GF as a 10 year old because the whole junction thing didn't made sense to me at the time. Unfortunately I did not beat ultimecia so I gamesharked it and beat her, but then later I learned how to junction and it became one of my favorite final fantasy along with Zell's OP limit break doing 450k damage or something like that.
Personally I'd cound Angelo as a summon. HE functions the same as Oden/Gilgamesh and you even name him like you name summons.

When I saw this title, I was like "That's how I did my first attempt at a playthrough!" (Because I didn't understand the junction mechanics) I got stuck at the Sorceress battle in the Pandora- Rinoa would always die.
Then I played again overpowered with proper junction techniques.
That was fun. Thanks.

How did you get Doomtrain on disc 2? I thought you have to get the Remedy+ from Alexander’s MedLvUp ability? (And Edea has Alexander)
Funny thing is, when I first played this game a kid, this is almost exactly what I ended up doing. Not because I wanted a challenge, but because I hated the fact that you had to fight monsters to upgrade weapons. I thought it was utterly boring. I made it as far as the Adele fight without upgrading a single weapon and just depending on summons the whole time to fight...but theni had to ho bavk ans upgrade, much to my utter boredom.
For my very first playthrough of FF8, I did a summon heavy run.
It ended at Adel.
The game had long since stopped making sense, my party was overlevelled, and I actually hate Rinoa. Never bothered to finish the game or start over.
