“..disc wheel, aero helmet...” and slipstreaming a Land Rover punching a big hole in the air in front of you !! Forgot to mention that little bit 😂 Great effort, good video.
My first thought were those old photos of cyclists using trains to slipstream off of for record attempts back in the early 20th Century. They'd have like a shack built around them at times lol
This video only shows how crazy the record by Hoogland is. Hank went for rolling start from the top of a hill and got the help of the camera car for wind resistance, and he was only 4 seconds faster than the world record. No wonder you need 900 watt (average) and 2700 watt (peak) to get the record.
Well he did have the advantage of less air resistance. Not only did he not have any wind to speak, but the air was thinner being at altitude. @@lmp2962
Can I just say I don't think I have ever enjoyed a video and laughed as much at a GCN video. Love these two. Need more videos with more trash talk qnd joking around like this.
This was a fun pairing....hats off to both. Did anyone else note how graciously the Irish Champ bent almost double to get Son-of-Hank's-Dad's face into the frame???He was bent almost double. Cracked me up. (Plus that is a lot of wind resistance)
Accelerating down a hill, on winding road, with oncoming traffic, in the rain. I would advise everyone to never try this, as it would probably end very badly.
I gave the video a 👎 for that very reason. James was way too close to at least two cars. A frontal collision at full speed with an incoming car would put the lad into a very early grave indeed. And this is not the first time they've done it. I strongly disapprove.
That first left hand corner with water draining across the road was lethal. Losing it there would have put them under the wheels of on coming traffic. We've all descended in ways that, in hindsight, weren't advisable however we didn't share it on the world's most popular cycling TH-cam channel.
I’m fairly local and have ridden that descent multiple times, and while it is quick it’s not one I would choose for this challenge. That bend at the start is steep and you’re having to hold back the speed a lot to get round it, plus it’s a pretty busy road. You could definitely do better on a better suited road
I really admire the fact that Hank could not possibly accept defeat, so he pulled out the "aero" advantages and demolished the record. Was that extreme turbulence that Hank had experienced at the end of his ride? You had me laughing with your sheer determination to make your statement loud and clear. 😂😂
my best down there is 1:27 on a ratchety old steel pub bike. i usually bottle it on the bottom corner! Always enjoy watching this stuff on roads i know
Brilliant video! Great chemistry between these two, and it's always good to see Hank at speed! Some of us enjoy speed and have the abilities required to descend quickly. People imply that I'm crazy for my descent speed too, but it's all relative. This is a skillset of mine, and it comes naturally to me. I don't go around calling other people crazy for doing things that I'm not proficient at, like chefs or synchronised swimmers. We can all choose whether or not we ride down a hill quickly. If you don't think you can do it, don't do it. You shouldn't need someone (e.g. GCN) to warn you that it might be dangerous. Assess it for yourself and make your own decision based on your competence and risk appetite. You know, like an evolved human.
My gosh, you guys are nuts! Traffic on, wet roads ... maybe and a constant disclaimer "don't try this at home ... or anywhere else ..." ... 😅 But, great fun to watch.
It could be said watching Hank and Conor at work is a bit like watching a dynamic duo of Ant and Dec, but a better comparison would be to say they are like the dynamic duo of Bertie and Ernie! 🤣
It’s not as though countless amazing challenges haven’t proven it already, but this shows me that the GCN team is stacked with truly awesome riders. Those conditions are terrifying. Amazing.
Obviously, Conor is just bigger/less aero. Amazing effort by both! I enjoy this even if it should probably have a ‘do not try this at home’ warning. At first I thought a TT bike would be a good call, but immediately thought ‘I’d prefer these guys to live on to make more videos.’ Thanks, gents!
I honestly can’t even comprehend the concept of doing an effort so unbelievably intense that you get sick after 55 seconds. His body must have nearly gone into shock.
He most likely was close to, or partially DID black out after. The oxygen debt, especially at altitude for that super human anaerobic effort HAD to be heinous, regardless of his conditioning/training!!
I don't actually know who is a better rider, Hank or Conor, but Conor is a gigantic parachute compared to slim and sleek Hank. I think Ollie could easily explain why Conor was slower (CdA).
This one looked really dangerous. It wouldn’t have taken much to lose traction on a corner and go straight into an oncoming car. You really need a totally straight road for this, especially if you were going to do the aero bars and tri-spoke front wheel.
Great video, guys. I get the feeling that if you listened closely to Hank's head while he does maths, you'd hear something similar to one of Ollie's freehub soundchecks...
It must have been the classic Geraint Thomas speed gilet that made the difference. Next challenge for Hank: Descend as fast on a TT bike as Jonas Vingegaard in the tour.
Guys..it’s nice to have you around and present cool things on a bike. Don’t risk your life or bones by doing crazy things. Think of safer ways to do your videos. Again…I bet many of us want you alive and well. Take care!
Cold air is more dense than Warm air. Likewise, higher elevations have less dense air than lower elevations. Ideally you want to be in LESS dense air in order to reduce aerodynamic drag forces being felt on the body / bike. However, there is a performance penalty on humans / engines that operate in high elevation environments. You / your engine (cardiovascular system) will be unable to intake better levels of oxygen when up at a less dense environment (high altitude) compared to when at lower altitudes (high density air) of which has more oxygen per unit volume of air used by your cardiovascular system. In a magical controlled experiment, If you wanted to see the fastest velodrome times, you would want to have an indoor velodrome up in the Himalayan mountains but, the velodrome cyclist would need to have a positive pressure oxygen mask on when he rides. 😁
Aero is everything. And a really steep hill !!! Why not use a electric bike or one with a petrol engine. Just as valid. Great video - entertaining. Life's to short to take everything too seriously.
I'd love to see Hank, fully aero'd up, try it from a standing start on an e-bike. That might give him the initial boost needed. Also, Connor's face when Hank said he was the better rider 😂
Great vid guys! Don’t think I’ll try that myself though. That hill was on my route to work years ago, so I’ve probably beaten your time. I was driving a Saab 900 turbo though! 😂
It’s unbelievable how much different make aerodynamics things, it definitely changes everything. What tires did they use on that wet condition? Sizes? And what air pressure?
I did replicate the standing 1 km record on a flat piece of road held by Francois Pervis when it was fresh three years ago at 56 seconds. Obviously with a flying start and somewhere around 600 watts (without powermeter) and bucketloads of lactic acid. I wonder how many seconds the time trial bike and full aero kit would have made?
Respect to Conor that he never mentions the *humungous* elephant in the room that is the fact he's as aerodynamic as a parachute. I'd love to see Conor on a recumbant vs Hank on a TT bike. I reckon that might be quite close...
What a bonkers fun zany challenge Conor, Hank and gcn! Sorry, there's no way you can make an unleashed Giraffe aero, so of course Conor didn't stand a chance, even with those great long legs! The stats alone of Jeffery's ride make my eyes bleed! Great idea to take it DOWNHILL. More of this craziness please! Haven't laughed so much since Conor went underwater or Hank tried 50mph recumbent bumpercars!🤣🤣
Just need more elevation. :) Park City is my fastest descent on a long straight road. -5 to -9% grade at about 2500m elevation. Per Bikecalculator, you get about 8kph as compared to sea level.
1000m is a sprint. It would be best to have a velodrome that is as high up as possible. The highest track is probably Velodromo de Alto Irpavi in Bolivia at 3340m.
For an anaerobic effort like the kilo, I suspect that the additional altitude of Bolivia would be faster. For an aerobic effort like the hour record, Mexico is probably better.
Who wants to see Hank & Conor try it again mid-summer in a skinsuit?!
Yes! I bet you guys could dip into the .40's.
I wanna see what it takes to make it *easy* to break the record. Downhill, ebike... throw the book at it.
With a lead-out rolling start
Mid-summer yes. LESS than a skinsuit - BLOODY YES!
Look easy, ride your bike out the back of a Hercules plane. You’ll blow that record to pieces 😁

Hank is absolutely awesome. (So is Conor, don’t get me wrong.)

Hank had balls of steel on that second run.
