  • The hour record for cycling is very simple. It's just one rider going as far as possible for one hour. WIRED's Robbie Gonzalez explores the physical power needed to push for 60 minutes and the equipment and track choices that can make or break the record.

    I am an amateur but I've done 2 ironman triathlons in the past. On the second race there was a long section of inclined road where I was able to go over 70 km/h for about 250 metres. The bike did shake and I had a blurry tunnel vision. It was a frightening experience.

      Time trial (especially triathlon bikes) have terrible crosswind performance, it’s like a giant sail, it’s why we don’t like to see people bring triathlon bikes to the group rides, (also the part where your brakes aren’t in the same spot as your shifters)

      As for the "tunnel vision" - was the bike ride last of the three? I love overbiking myself, but running? I would have tunnel vision after 1 kilometer? Or rather after 0.5! No can do...

    • @DCmac
      @DCmac หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@xmtxx the problem with recumbent bikes is that they're not very marketable and very niche(and imo just look a bit silly). road bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes are popular because they all share the same or a similar riding position. they are what people know and love as true bicycles that can do time trials, hill climb races, tour de france style stage races, races on gravel or cobbles, crit racing, etc. it's much more exciting to see people get out of the saddle and put down 1000-1200 watts in a big attack off the front, and watch people immediately try to respond in kind. you can get more riders in a race to form a proper peloton, and watching them sprint at 1700-2000 watts at the finish is just a different level of excitement.

In my prime I was able to set some real good personal records but those were some insanely difficult tasks. 10 miles in 54:36 was a hard one, the practice for it was the worst. something like 40 miles a week. My best 2 miles was only 11:56, I was never that good at the 2 mile. The time im most proud of is 2hrs 12 mins in the 12 mile ruck. that was very hard for me. I actually almost passed out multiple times. Running 12 miles with a 60lbs ruck and boots is not much fun. I guess also being a smoker at the time made my life harder lol.

      When it comes to records, I'm sure they want to standardize the way it is done.
      There will always be someone who figures out a way to bend the rules in order to gain an advantage.
      So they probably want this record to be challenged by the fitness of the athlete as opposed to the improved technology of the bike itself.

    • @wloffblizz

      Sounds like they didn't exactly "ban a position", just set rules on what shape the bike itself should be for the record. You obviously have to figure out some kind of standard rules on what the bike should be like for a record to make any sense.

    How does a amater with no team backing have a go at the 1 hour record ? I'm training for it at 36 yo. I'm dedicated completely. I've quit alcohol , I have no social life, no girlfriend, few friends, I'm dedicated mind body, soul. I think I'm making around 432 watts for 20 minute effort. I not to sure how accurate my power Meter is but figure as long as numbers keep climbing that doesn't matter.
    I am gaining give or take 10 watts per month. I'm currently 85 kg 6ft 3 height. How on earth Bradley Wiggins made 69 kg at 6ft 3 is beyond me. I'm taking a different approach . I'm riding on feel and I've noticed. I'm not losing weight but I constantly am feeling new muscles growing so I'm thinking I'm designed for around 85 kg to 90 kg strong fit weight. I'm not training for hill climbs . I'm training exclusively for the 1 hour. So I'm thinking outright power for 1 hour means more value then watts per kilo to me. Any feedback on how to put my self in line for a shot at the world record would be much appreciated

    Considering the total power is conceptually wrong because a different person has a different cross section and different mass. If a person weights 100kg and another weights 50kg, outputting 440W each would result in two different regimes. If you normalize the power output with the drag force of each athlete THEN you can make a comparison and find out what's the power you need to target.

    I wonder if it would be easier with a heavier bike. Of course, that wouldn't make any sense at first, but heavier means more stability, which would allow the cyclist to focus more on pushing and less on balance. (balance might not matter initially, but with more fatigue, balance gets harder and consumes more energy). Once the bicycle is up to speed, then the bike shouldn't lose energy on that smooth indoor track the way it would on the road, so although it would take more energy to get up to speed, the energy it takes to maintain the same speed should actually just be the same (assuming equal friction),, and perhaps if the bicycle is more stable, then balance would actually consume LESS energy (fewer wobbles), meaning more energy available for pushing forward.

      The Tour only has more prestige, hence more attendance, viewership, hence more advertising, hence more prize money. But the competition is about the same, and the route is harder. You can't climb a Zoncolan, an Etna or an Angliru in a Tour because there isn't such mountain in France.

      @simonrano8072 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@georgec2894 note quite true, a high hematocrit means your blood carry a lot of oxygene but your heart would not necessary be able to pump it at high flow level. You quote a 800 m athlete, lactate tolerance is a more meaningfull for 2 min effort. I bet all I have every single olympic 5 000 m athlete has an high VO2max value. VO2 max is really your ability to sustain high intensity efforts. Period. But the limiting factor of your VO2 max can be either your hematocrit, your heart rate, heart size, lung capacity... 63 is not very high indeed (I reach 430 W stage at 68 Kg for an estimated 68 VO2max) I would probably drop him easily on a mountain climb but I'm nowhere near competing in 800 m sport
