You know I kind of think if anyone would pretend to like anything it would be Pop music. I kind of think you would find more posers to main stream music then posers to metal. Like I know growing up I pretended to like mini popular bands like the Backstreet Boys and Hanson because they were cute and my cousins liked them, but I didn’t really like their music. When I started listening to metal it was because I liked the music and the bands, and I didn’t really know anyone listening to it; and it wasn’t necessarily because I thought any of the musicians in the bands were cute either; I just really liked the music.
Yep. I've only been getting properly into metal for about a year now, of course there's going to be tons of bands I'm not familiar with yet! But I love the (still huge amount of) music I have heard and am very interested in tons more.
I love seeing women at metal shows. 15-20 years ago it was rare. Now we are finally giving the musicians more respect. There are so many badass women in bands dishing out awesome tunes. Keep em coming!
I know there are more... but hail the vocal beast Tatiana Shmaylyuk and Jinjer... freaking love that band. Also like arch Enemy. CRYPTA is sounding pretty bad ass too. Two members were from Nervosa.
As a female metalhead, I agree with a lot of what you said...but I loathe the “girl merch”. I’m 5’10” and it has never fit me. Also, “girl merch” tends to have a more “cutesy” design...which I fucking hate. I’ve certainly been groped in the pit for well over a decade. I’ve gotten in more fights with dudes than I can count.
Yeah the girl merch is at times hilarious. It’s like a bunch of dudes got in a room and we’re like, “girls will like this, right?” Lol I think they’re still trying to figure out what us strange effeminate creatures actually are. And that sucks, I wish everyone would just be cool in the pit but there’s always those ones that have to ruin it.
This! This so much! The "girly" designs are so lame, usually lyrics/name of a ballad type song (if the band has any) - or has colors like pink or purple, both of which I hate. -_-
Reminds me. I had this killer Megadeth She-Wolf shirt designed by Marvel back in the 90s. Got it on the Megadeth Cryptic Writings tour. It was a badass shirt. I used to get compliments on it from women who weren't even metalheads. I'm a man and it was in male sizes. Don't think they did but it would've been a smart move for Megadeth to offer the same shirt in female sizes. Groping women or anyone for that matter in the pit is disgusting behavior. I'm sorry you and other women and girls have to experience that. Totally unacceptable behavior.
as a female metalhead, i once worked at the beer bar at the iron maiden concert and the amount of dudes who flirted with me and took up the space at the front of the bar was unbelievable it really sucks bcus i wanted to hear the band and to do my job right
I got called a poser for dancing to the random filler music the venue puts on when you’re waiting for the band to start 😂 my friend and I were just having a good time lol! And we were one of the like 5 women at the Insomnium concert so I think that probably had a lot to do with it. It’s always the creepy men that say things too who clearly want a metal gf but for some reason insult every woman who says they like metal
@@JJMetalhead the same thing happens in gaming. they want a gamer gf but insult every female gamer they come across in teams. like call her a "12 year old boy" or "man with a voice changer" or even transphobic slurs. yikes.
I walked into Starbucks with my Megadeth Peace Sells shirt on and the girl making the coffee said "oh I love Macbeth...." she rambled on talking about the play. I just nodded.....
Hello!💕 I'm mother of teenager, Metalhead girl. I found interesting learning and understand my daugther's music, style and philosophy. For her it was to feel like outsider at school, But by the time, We started to support her and being different it's a gift. 💙 I can see little by little that she feels comfortable in her own skin. ❤Love and respect it's a crucial deal 💕 Thanks for sharing this to parents 👩🏫❤🤘😈
At an old job once, this girl came to my register wearing a Metallica shirt. I got all excited and they were coming to my area soon so I said, "Oh, nice shirt! Are you planning to see them in a few weeks?" She looked at me like I was some kind of degenerate and said, "I don't actually *listen* to Metallica. I just like to distress the shirts" in the most condescending voice. I honestly don't give a shit what people wanna wear, but metalheads are a passionate bunch. If she's gonna do that, she better get used to us coming up all excited and asking about it, and quit being so rude.
Agreed! It doesn’t really bother me when people wear band shirts without knowing the band. It’s the awkward social situation it creates when you try to talk to them about it lol. I’m socially awkward as it is, so asking someone about their band shirt is struggle enough, and then when they have no idea it’s just disappointing.
Lol i just did this to a girl asked her if she was going to the upcoming show. She told me “I’m just a zennial that’ wears shirts without knowing what they mean” I thought she was being sarcastic but she then explained that she thought it was a graphic tee but that someone gifted it to her. She totally looked the part though lol.
im a beginner metalhead, recently bought my first electric guitar, and didn't expect so little females liking metal(( im happy to see im not the only one and hoping I'll find a lot of female metalheads in the future😌
I'm possibly only female metalhead in my country 😂 I live in Pakistan. All of metalheads I know are, males and I feel accepted by them. They even titled me as 'the music expert' since I'm also into blackgaze, shoegaze, post-rock, indie rock, synthwave, classical music, harsh noise etc. They always come to me and ask for recommendations. I wrote lyrics for a few bands which was fun. Unfortunately, there's still conservative mindset of my family that prevents me from hanging out with metalheads because they are 'males' and my school even forced me to hang out with female normies instead of male students who are metalheads. It's suffocating because most girls judge my 'goth' sense of fashion, and try to guilt-trap me. I already told them multiple times that I'm not goth 😅 But I do have some positive moments where a few girls try to explore my musical taste and respect it. One of them got, ironically, into Odium Nostrum by Deathspell Omega. That's only metal track she keeps in Spotify playlist lol.
you're so lucky cuz even my male friends looked at me in disgust when I mentioned that I listen to Slipknot just fyi I listen to other subgenres a well
Actually i am a female metalhead. I can relate a lot with the problems you mentioned, especialy being called a poser, a goth, and the merch...ah the merch. Btw love your channel
As a Goth myself, I have to defend the subculture. Goth is NOT a "style", it is a MUSIC-based subculture. Think Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, Depeche Mode, London After Midnight, etc. I have been a Goth for close to 17 years, and it really irks me when people spread false info about the subculture that I love. Yes, I absolutely wear black, but the music is the focal point of the subculture.
Oh god how relatable is this, as a goth and a metalhead I had to do double work when it comes to educating old friends of mine into making them understand the difference between these two ridiculously mistreated subcultures, which happens to be both music-based and not fashion-based, contrary to popular beliefs. It's also true that the esthetic plays a huge role in the goth subculture: overtime, musicians had developed plenty of iconic styles that contributed to the popularity of goth along side the music itself, and I'm 100% sure that in order for you to enjoy goth music you NEED to have a darkly inclined taste and mindset, if you're not a tiny bit interested into those subjects matters you're not going to be able to enjoy goth music in all its glory, because its sound is so specific and it's not meant for a mainstream audience that is used to commercial music genres. I swear I'm not gatekeeping the subculture, I'm just explaining the truth.
Female Metalhead here 🖤 The biggest problem for me is that guys automatically assume that we girls are single and want to be hooked up on.. I mean you mentioned it but I wanted to point that out :D
God the unwarrented comments about my appearance from other people is one of my biggest pet peeves. I come from a family that's kind of old fashioned about stuff like tattoos and piercings so its really bad around them. Im 25 years old but they still talk to me like I'm 7 and need advice on how to dress and act so they make comments all the time sometimes even in public or in front of other people, about what is or isn't flattering on me or how I'm "ruining" myself in some way by getting tattoos. Or how I should try to look more feminine. It's humiliating and infantilizing. I have pretty bad resting bitch face too so everyone from family members to complete strangers are constantly telling me how much more attractive I'd be if I'd smile more. You'd think I'd be used to that after 25 years of being alive but idk that never becomes less enraging to me. The only people that don't harass me about smiling are other metalheads 😆 Anyway I'm so glad I found your channel! You're well-spoken and you seem so real. Glad to be one of the 2% now🤘
My family is old fashioned too. Sometimes I hesitate to do the things I want with my appearance because I’m afraid of what they’ll say. I usually have to give my self a pep talk like, fuck it, I need to do what I want! Lol You do you girl, metalhead chicks are the most beautiful IMO and I think every metalhead would agree. Thanks for watching, glad to have my as one of the 2% 🤘🏻
My bro in law been making comments about if I'm lost from the forests n shit.. or chopping my hair if I'm not paying attention. On the other hand, I have been getting quite a fee compliments about my hair length....and hair health in general. I'm 44 and no receding hairline.. lmfao But yeah, it sucks being told what to wear or how long my hair needs to be.. or having tattoos.. (although I don't have a single tattoo.)
@@JJMetalhead one of my main dilemmas is that my maternal side are all devout Catholics (I'm half Filipino via my late mom)... and my paternal aunt is a nun. So yeah... at least for the time being none of them know"how extreme" I've gone musically. I'm a huge death metal, blackened death metal and black metal fan. And have fully disavowed my faith.
@@kevinfeeney5309 Hey, I’m half Filipino too! 🇵🇭 I feel for you man! I hope your family comes to accept you the way you are, but I understand that that may never come. Just be happy to be you and keep on rockin! 🤘🏻
@@JJMetalhead do you listen to any pinoy/pinay metal artists? SLASHMOUTH is pretty dope. Completely independent artist. Actually found out he's also a rapper... goes by EZ Mil. He edits and produces his own music videos (along with his sister's...she's known as Raining Sorrow), dances, plays multiple instruments and sings/raps in multiple languages.... english, tagalog, ilokano and visayan. Oh, and nihonggo japanese. Most of my music tastes lean towards metal... but I do like SOME rap.... now back to pinoy metal.... I love Kampon, Comatose, Voice of Tranquility, SIGNOS and Amaranhig
Just turned 49 this past December and have been a metalhead since I was 13. These are pretty accurate and sadly have not changed much. I still have people ask me to name songs of bands I’m wearing or have been asked if I was wearing my “boyfriends jacket” (my battle jacket). No girl merch sucks!! And 100% of the time the girl shirts have the crappiest decoration like the band logo and that’s it. I hate cutting my shirts but I also like to not look like a dude. It’s a struggle. I find there are way more creepers at all ages shows and bands that are more mainstream. Less at 21+ and even less the more extreme the music gets. I get groped in the pit more often at punk shows. I throw elbows if I have to. lol 😂 As someone that is older and something to look forward to is people saying things like “Oh you still do all that? I use to be into metal when I was younger but it’s too loud for me now”. I am metal for life! lol 😂 I do “the hover” at festivals and if I have to use a portapotty I hold on to the bar that closes the door and do “the hover”… I will go out of my way and stand in that long line to not use a portapotty… also slight dehydration if not complete. My bigger gripe is being short and having guys bully me out of my spot because I like being up against the barricade. Helps stop you from getting knocked down to be on the barricade and if you make friends with the security they will pull you out if it gets to crazy or help you if someone tries to be a belligerent jerk. Nice video! 🤘❤️
Honestly, a lot of what you've expressed here reminds me of my younger sister. She and I are fairly close, growing up she was influenced by me and my interests so she ended up getting into anime, video games and metal. For video games especially she tends to get called a poser, which doesn't make much sense since all of her favorite games are the weird and obscure shit that I've exposed to her and none of the mainstream stuff.
I'm an old school female metalhead! I've loved metal since I was a kid and began dressing as such when I was 13 and I still do and now I'm 48. I agree with your list, it's nice to see another female opinion on the matters esp the "DO'S and DONT'S" from that concert/festival site. I'm glad I found your channel today 🤘 I'll be checking out more of your videos, very interesting and it's awesome to see a female metalhead putting herself out there and explaining shit 💯
Im so sick of gatekeeping and poser this and that. People are so mean to each other and rude. Metal fans wonder why we are in the minority and not in mainstream. Why cant everyone just be cool and like what they like. Props to you for the great video! Metal is awesome, it quite literally saved my life. And even more so than metal, the people and friends I met and made friends with at shows. Peace and love is what this world needs, not gate keeping and being cruel to people. Im not a woman but I greatly appreciate this video and what you have to say. Keep it metal! \m/
8:40 I’ve never been called Goth, but I get called Emo all the time. I’m honestly sick of it. It’s not even close to being the same thing. Goth is probably closer.
When I was a young punk I met a girl with an Exploited hoodie. I fell in love at once. Girls who like Exploited is not an everyday thing in Norway. I fell fast out of love again when I understood she thought Exploited was a clothing brand 😂
I’m a 16 year old boy and i have no metalhead friends😢 only two of my teachers like metal which is atleast something. I have become a metalhead and discovered bands and all that stuff all on my own, i have even been called emo and satanist by one of my friends but its mostly an intern joke. To all girl metalheads out there, i wish you a great life and i hope that you find some people in life that understand you and stay strong👍🤘💀🔥🔥🔥
Hope you’re able to find some metalhead friends. It’s sometimes a lonely interest, but when you do find another fellow metalhead it’s always exciting. 🤘🏻
I went to a Deep Purple show in 2019 and I was the only young teen there. Everyone else was an adult but I saw a kid who looked about 7-9 years old. There were two women who were screaming in my ear for the whole 2-3 hours. I also met the lead singer for the opening band just like everybody else and he signed a CD for me! He was very nice and he even gave my mom a hug because she told him how she got blind after giving birth to me
A few years ago I mentioned to my grandmother I wanted to wear black nail polish. Her response went something like: “Ehh I think that’s too gothic looking, I don’t like that”. Like, it’s literally n a i l p o l i s h
1% of women, really? What a shame! I can relate with almost everything (I'm fat so the merch isn't such a problem for me), especially being called a poser or goth. Look, I was goth when I was younger and I still love music and style, but I love metal too! When I dress in black it's not because I'm goth or something, I just like to wear black, I feel cozy in it. People are so dumb sometimes.
I’ve talked to some people when they don’t know my gender and I feel like the talk to me differently after they find out I’m a girl. Sometimes for the better, sometimes worse.
Yeah I made the mistake of accusing a chick of being a poser back in the 90's. Found out later she was legit and was super hurt we were treating her that way. Felt horrible for judging and making her feel rejected by the group that she should have been a welcomed part of. Lesson learned! And regretted. Not fair. Hey, I don't think it's so much of a boys club as much as metal appeals a lot more to males than females. Some girls say they are, but end up not really. Perhaps that's why we sometimes think they are posers. Girls are welcome! However sometimes we do want to get away from our girl for awhile, hang with other dudes at a club and enjoy some righteous metal. So maybe that's why we kind of seen like a boys club sometimes. Liking your channel!
I think now days there has been more of a female presence in metal than ever before. I agree metal tends to appeal more to men than women. For the most part I’ve always felt welcome among the metal community. Thanks for watching!
Goth is a music based subculture, so no goth is also not a "style " (there's of course a style that goes with it and it comes from fashion of popular goth bands like The Cure or Christian Death). Just like in the metal scene - It's all about music.
But the style is a facet of the subculture it; is subsumed into the ethos of the goth/gothic identity, a synergy of style and substance. (substance being that you actually listen to the music and genuinely enjoy it) and perhaps some advocation on the side? Granted, one does not have to present as Goth to be Goth. I characterise the 'style' or 'aesthetic' as a physical visual representation/manifestation or an avatar that is a fragment of the essence of what Goth is.
I'm a guy and I have long hair. Being called "emo" is pretty normal for me now, even when I hate the "emo" style. The difference between "emo" and "metalhead" is enourmous.
Band shirts (and shipping) are so expensive! Why would I spend 50 dollars and then 27 dollars in shipping on a Powerwolf hoodie if I don't know who they are... thats redundant wallet ouchies
Was at Obituary last month. The chick to dude ratio was about 1 : 15. Sad state of affairs, metal needs more women! They smell a lot nicer than all the sweaty dudes for a start.
My parents think I'm fake-listening to metal in order to annoy them xD Also last summer I got a Marduk shirt with the "Slay the Nazarene" design, they kept going and going about how much I need Jesus in my life
The merch thing is SO annoying! I’m petite and have a pretty small frame so I struggle massively. To cut down most t-shirts to fit me I would have to lose part of the graphic 😬 When I do manage to find a ladies’ t-shirt they only have them in L or XL 🤦🏻♀️
I feel ya! Luckily baggy t-shirts are kind of in style right now. I plan on doing a video tutorial on how to cut up band shirts for all 10 of lady subs on here! 😈
i hate when i say that i listen to many, many other genres other than metal and get called a poser or a not a "real" metalhead, but i think that many people experience this, not just female metalheads like me
Hey girl thank you for posting this. It's awesome. I love everything you said especially the need for attention , the lack of sizes for women's Tees in the metal world and the groping. I also thought the Tool shirt story was pretty funny. They have been my favorite band for 20 years , and I love hearing when women love them as much as I do. Keep it up!! Also curious if you like Gojira?
i have a thing that sucks about being a female metalhead in an Islamic country - you can't wear what you want; you can't wear band shirts. I look like your average good Muslim girl when I go out but honestly, I'm not even Muslim anymore. and if I could dress how I want, I would wear band shirts and no hijab because what's the point. I hate it here oof
I’m a young metal head in high school and I get the whole being misunderstood or being perceived as something your not. I’ve had so many people ask if I was emo and goth just because of the stuff I wear (all black with long hair) and it drives me insane. I try to explain the differences but I honestly don’t know too much about the topic myself. But these normies already have preconceived notions of what goths or emos look like. Sure we dress a little bit similarly but there is a difference. You also can’t just assume something like that based solely upon appearance. Emos, goths, and metal heads are based more so off of their music taste than any other aspect of their personality. I wish people would just understand that.
Unpopular opinion but we would just stop calling people posers altogether, most of the time it's unjustified and stupid. Also, though I'm not a woman, I am a smaller guy so I definitely feel you on the shirt size issue 😂
Hey I just discovered you and I have been listening to metal for years but just recently brought out the metal in me and it makes me happy to see another female metalhead like me
Thanks for this video. Sometimes I feel so alone in being a female metalhead especially where I live. I always get told "you don't look like a metal chick." Like what are they supposed to look like?
Just discovered this and I have always felt alone felt alone being a female metal head and one of the few “alternative” (for a broader term cos I’m the only one that is female and dress and looks like metal head) and I feel so outcast by them around me I see no people like me they all dress like each other and listen to the same music and then I come in and just don’t fit in family and friends. My mum was/is a punk rocker who grew up through the late 60s 70s and my dad being a metal head drew up through the 70s and 80s too, and they have allways taught me that my interests are not bad I’m not weird or a bad person for limping these things and my mum has leaned back into wearing band shirts, and my dad is the closest I have to my music taste with my sister being the closet to my age and being “alternative” yet it wasn’t enough and growing up I had what I call my “cool” phase. Where I tried to fit in I was having some friendship troubles and a toxic friendship I was going through where she was basically making me do what she wanted whenever and thought that this was better hiding my interests and who I am and what I like to please people, I am a people pleaser after all Amd I don’t matter everyone else’s does yet she threw me out of the formdshio circle that we had and ignored me for the rest of my life and I don’t know why so I saw some people in my year that had similar interests to me not the same but similar and yet they hated me too and made fun of me right In frount of me and avoiding me and talking shit about me while pretending I was there Friend. So being a metal head and only having one friend who shares interests the same as you is nice she’s my best friend and my only friend that I see all my other friends are online, and it’s so comforting for me to see people like me assuring me I’m not alone nor weird, I have other weird interests and personality traits and things about me too but female metal heads are hard to find and I am yet to find another female metal friend and I have online fiends tho so at least I’m not alone :)) (sorry I ranted here needed to let off some steam seemed like a safe place) hopefully I can learn to not be ashamed of me and my interests:)
I can relate to this so much. I still sometimes have a hard time being myself around others for fear of judgement (I too tend to be a people pleaser). I'm still working on it, but I think just being yourself as much as you can is the way to go. The people who accept you will be your true friends and the ones who don't aren't worth the time. Hang in there and I hope you find your tribe of freaks in real life!
Thank you for mentally preparing me for what is to be expected at rock gigs! I'm black and have been into metal since I was 14( introduced to Iron Maiden and Motorhead) forever grateful for this! Much to the dismay of my family! And the only one out of the girls to have tattoos Going to check out local bands to see, so wish me luck! Jackie x
I am a fan of metal and goth music but I lean more towards metal. Definitely both subcultures are music based, although the music styles are wildly different but I love them both. I’m so glad I found your channel! I have metalhead guy friends but it's really nice to know there are other women who like metal too.
Another metalhead girl here; been listening to metal for the past 16 or so years. I've experienced a lot of the same problems at shows, among friend groups, at parties, etc. On the note of merch, I actually prefer the guy's shirts (the art is amazing!), but there's hardly ever smalls left or (in some cases) none to begin with. Also, emphasis on the festival washrooms! I don't even understand how people can pile shit so high that it's above the toilet seat. I gotta know if the Shewee works! Only problem I haven't had is being called goth since I don't dye my hair, it never holds dye and my roots grow out too fast... but I also have been playing Magic for the past 10 years and it's TOO easy to spend my budget on more cards!! haha :p
I feel you on the lack of merch which why of course (which we talked about) I started sewing. And the groping is the worst! I’ve definitely had someone literally put his hands inside me when I was wearing skirt at a show. I was crowd surfing (didn’t plan that I just got picked up and sent off against my will). I also had a man try and put his arm around me at arch enemy while I was head banging and screaming along to a song.
@@JJMetalhead i definitely am way more assertive when men are being inappropriate now. And it’s taught me to watch out for other women. I hope bands start watching out for this and calling people out in the crowd.
Once I met a girl who was wearing a Guns and roses tshirt and when walked up to her and asked her about the band she told me that she just liked the shirt. I didn't know many metal head at the time so I was so happy to see someone wearing a tshirt of a metalband. Just wanted to talk to the girl about metal music. It broke my heart that she was wearing it because it was cool looking. Lucky for me I got to know multiple metal girls and they were awesome to hang out with...
Yeah G&R is one of those bands that you can find t-shirts at target and such so a lot of people have no idea. Glad you got to meet some awesome metal ladies!
I just subbed, and I'm so glad to have found your channel! I HATE comments on what I'm wearing that come accompanied by scornful faces and patronizing tones. Blech. What sucks most for me at the moment is living with hateful religious family; enjoying music - to them - is just wrong. But hey, it's just a moment. Potaters gon potate, amirite? I love that I'm part of the 2%! Thank you for making this video :)
Hello, I am one of those female metalheads. :) At first, thanks for Your channel. My personal experience with those suck moments is especially about quite often automatic underestimation of females as metal musicians.
Just found your channel and I am so grateful. Thank you for sharing your love of the music and culture and for standing up for women in the metal community. I have also experienced some of things you mentioned. Im never going to stop loving the music and attending concerts just because some dude has an opinion. 🖤
Even for me as a guy, I can relate to most of the problems (except for the groping and the toilet prob). I met tons of people who wears band shirts without knowing they are bands and not brands. Most normies assume I'm a punk when my music n fashion style r actually goth or a deathrocker (I prefer being called darkwaver since I enjoy more darkwave). I got called poser since Im "too young" by few elder goths but idgaf. Side note : why am I in a metal channel? I like metal music and stuff related to them but I won't necessarily label myself a metalhead since I listens to goth music more than metal in my life and spend more time in goth community.
Everything you said is so true! Especially about merch. One of the things I hate most is the freaking necks, they're so small and claustrophobic. How are we supposed to be breathe in the pit lol 😂😂 also about family, no one understands what it means to be a metalhead. New subscriber btw!
Thank You, JJ... Just one more point towards the merchandise issue. Yes, I face the same problem as the most of e.g. clothing items is often made for our male colleagues. But this issue is getting continuously better as the number of female metalheads goes up. :) The "procedure" how I deal with that is to just buy the male's T-shirt in similar or larger size and to re-shape it with help of good dressmaker in order to fit the girl. :) It is not expensive and yeaah...it just our girls' workaround.
As a female metalhead who also dresses in various black alt styles, I've been called goth, all the times. It's always goth. Even though I do like goth music like SoM and Bauhaus I don't subscribe to the subculture because it was not a part of me growing up. Metal was. As a goth youtuber said goth doesn't have a monopoly on black. However I'm just sad for the goths who constantly get fetishised.
This is so spot on; the thing about getting hit on at shows especially. Drives me nuts because I'm generally oblivious to flirting and I love talking about music, so I'll be thinking I'm having a nice conversation with a stranger about what bands we like and then he'll ask for my snapchat and I'll be like oh. :(
Hello, new subscriber. 1. Yes, 99% of Metalheads are men... Females in Metal are gold. Treat all females with respect. 2. Not every female in Rock/Metal listens to Gothic Metal, Power Metal or Symphonic Metal. 3. Not all girls dressed in black are Gothic, that's another subculture misunderstood by most Metalheads, sorry. 4. Girls with tattoos are cool. 5. Metal bands with all Female members are cool, don't think they're can't be as talented, brutal and cool as you might expect. 6. Remember: Female Metalheads can kick your a** too.
I agree with you on all of these points, especially the bathroom issue. I own one of those portable urinal thingies, it's very similar to a menstrual cup, so you can fold it to make it smaller and easier to put in a bag and you can clean it by washing it with soap. I personally prefer to clean it with baby wipes when I use it so it's clean and not smelling bad when I put it back in the bag, and then I wash it properly when I get home. They're a pretty good investment since they save you a lot of time and annoyance when going to public restrooms, not just at gigs and festivals, but anywhere really. I think the only downside is that it takes a while to get used to it. The first few times you feel like you're gonna pee all over yourself, lol. Oh, and the GoGirl is pretty good, that little can is actually the place you store it. So you use it, clean it, fold it and put it back in the can. It's pretty discreet to carry around too.
Thank you for this video. The first one is spot on. I remember some other female metalhead did a video on her favorites death metal bands and i was like hey i love death metal too, so im going comment my favorite ones. Before i could type out my comment the comments were filled with poser comments or straight up misogyny/sexism. So i decided not to comment. I really wanted to share what i liked but i didnt want to get shit on. Which is why i dont necessarily put out my music taste cause i dont want to deal with incels.
I remember one time a girl in one of my college classes was wearing a cannibal corpse t shirt it had the cover art from their violence unimaginable album. So of course I pointed out I liked her shirt and I liked the band and the shirt had my favorite cannibal corpse album on it. Sadly she didn't know who cannibal corpse was and I felt embarrassed
5:53 so true i was at the gojira/deftones show and some random man started to put his arm around my shoulders and dance with me very closely and it was so uncomfortable considering the fact im 17 n this guy was like 30 LMAOOO
Hah I have numerous tattoos ,the "best " I have heard approximately a decade ago was " oh will you like them when you get old, how would it look like " ,lol I am 62 and LOVE every one of them
A pretty cool metal memory for me involving women from my college days was when this beautiful Japanese girl, Yoshika, came up to me and started inquiring about my musical taste. I kind of hemmed and hawed, because I was sure telling her the sort of music I liked would be a conversation ender, but then she was like, "So the first CD I ever bought was Angra." Looking at her, nothing screamed "metalhead" but she was a huge fan of metal and a pretty cool person.
This was when I was starting to listen to rock in sixth grade but my bullies called me an emo because according to them I wore too much black. I go to a private Catholic school and our uniform is red or grey and black pants or shorts and for gym it’s all navy plus they have never seen me outside of school so how would they know if I wore black 24/7. I obviously denied it and now I wear a lot of black but I am a female metalhead. I also don’t have any metalhead friends and my friends never judged me for it
I admit to being a bit of an emo kid in middle school. I didn’t get into metal until later. I’m glad you have friends that don’t judge you, sometimes they can be hard to come by. 🤘🏻
I'm too disabled to go to metal shows. I feel like I'd have an even worse time than you have between my tinnitus migraines, extreme asthma, legal blindness and chronic nerve pain. Bet your ass I'd consume the mosh pit though. When all you know is internal pain, external pain like a mosh pit wouldn't even register. Very fascinating video. Subbed and I've got a ton of your vids on my queue.
“When all you know is internal pain, external pain like a mosh pit wouldn’t even register.” Damn if that’s not the most metal thing I’ve heard in a while! 🤘🏻
A guy at a restaurant said he liked my Sodom shirt once just because he liked the colors and design of it. I don't think there's anything wrong with that but it was just a little funny because I could tell fairly quickly that he wasn't a thrash guy lol. But still a compliment is a compliment.
I was writing a long comment with my story, but it was deleted, so I'll just say I feel very lonely as a female metalhead. I was trying to communicate with other metalheads in my teens, but none of them were friendly enough and were trying to making fun of me from different reasons (like a correct band pronounce or my photos). Now I'm an adult and afraid to try again. P.S. About the band pronounce: I was right then, but who cares P.P.S. Sorry for the grammar, I'm not a native speaker
I'm a woman who goes to a lot of metal gigs alone and thankfully, most of the time I don't get any trouble at all. Probably all thanks to my mean RBF. It's always fun to see/meet other women there also. :) PS. the she-wee isn't too bad, it took some practice to get used to using one and they do sell carry cases for them!
Girls are great for metal, more the better. I haven't had the luxury of knowing many metal head girls. I saw Crypta open for Morbid Angel and they kicked serious ass live.
Dude here. I've been called a girl ever since I started growing my hair out. I've sometimes replied... "oh yeah? Here...let me play you some of my fave music... see how fast you run to the corner and cry like a little wussy." Haha Also, I'm quite hefty... 3xl is like the smallest that I feel comfy wearing, so I'm on the other end of the spectrum. Hard to find band shirts I like IN MY SIZE! Lol
Good list. Are you planning to go to Bloodstock this year? I have tickets from last year, but with the plague still going on and Download cancelled, i'm not sure if it's a good idea or not
@@JJMetalhead I know what you mean. Buying tickets to anything feels like a gamble. The only other tickets i have are for Behemoth and Arch Enemy in October, so fingers crossed that's far enough away that things are better in the world
I missed out on Jinjer. I'm a late comer to the band. Just barely found out about them a few weeks into the first covid lockdowns. Just found out they're in Los Angeles on October 30th, but sold out already and I don't have the kind of income to travel 4 hours north to Sacramento or to the south in san Diego...both still have tickets available
when I was a teen someone call me a poser and he try to say I was only like metal because my boyfriend. that was in the 80's. everything you said seems to be the same since the 80's. I still love and listen to the music but I don't go to concerts anymore.
Hi. I just subscribed cause I saw your battle vest video when I looked up battle vest in the TH-cam search barre and I clicked on your video because you were the only woman who popped up. The rest of them were men and I wanted to support another female metalhead!
One of my friends is a metal head chick. And quite frankly she never gets called any of that. Her energy is pretty convincing it seems. She's very stoic. As a matter of fact, men often compliment her band Tshirts lol
I grew up listening to heavy metal all of my life. I was definitely more drawn into my dads music which was that type and other rock bands like the offspring. Now that I am 16 and dressing more and more in baggier band shirts and also considering myself to be a metalhead because I enjoy listening to the music that i grew up to and new ones as well. So far I haven't had any experiences yet but honestly im kinda scared ngl in the future. I definetly wanna see concerts and all of that but im more scared of the more "hardcore" people Y'know. Or the people that are like "Oh you listen to heavy metal? name 5 other bands other than the big 4" Honestly i get the gatekeeping but i dont really like it that much. Mostly just how toxic some people can be.
For the most part people are really nice. I haven't had too many bad experiences and all the awesome people i've met make up for anything negative. I hope you're able to get to some shows. Just know that generally if someone sees someone being mistreated, people will stand up for you.
am 13 grew up with metal and punk. Also from my dad, even tho i hate him as a father, we have so many things in common for some reason. My mom was a punk too, both of them skinheads, but my dad is really into thrash. So i was into it when i was little, then became a hippy, then a rave chick, now im back to square one lol. honestly metal and punk are the best things that have happened to me, concerts are fun, i get to go in funi dance pit, and people are always so nice to me and a lot of people bullied me in elementary for being shy and kinda weird n cynical and they still do for being weird and cynical but now its just like i dont care go listen to ur fake trap and follow ur fake culture we'll see who has the 8 children and who has the 6 figures in their 40s.... Fucking ruining our country. Not that it was that great anyway.
I remember when I was new to metal and I found a group of metalhead friends and they started asking me about every detail about the bands that I liked and I was so annoyed because I was new and didn't know everything about the life of the band members, and just wanted to listen to metal. But I survived and we became good friends and used to hang together for years. 😊
Ugh, yes I hate how people try and test you. But glad you made it through and have a solid group of metalhead friends! I’m secretly jealous since almost all my metalhead friends I only know through the internet 😅
Interesting to see how much of this overlaps with biker issues. I’ve definitely been called a “goth” and even been called an “eboy” whatever the hell that means. It pisses me off when I see someone take advantage of a woman trying to just have a good time at a concert and I’ve seen it ruin the entire night for them, it’s sad. Even worse is when I see some guys do it to the women with that one stamp on their hand (you know the one), it’s infuriating I would have thought we as a community could just have a good time without causing issues for once. And the bathroom thing, god I couldn’t imagine, I hate just standing up and using one can’t imagine sitting down on those filthy things. The poser thing makes me frustrated as well, I’ve seen someone call a girl a poser because “you must be wearing your boyfriends battle vest” despite it fitting her body perfectly. A lot of the appearance things I’ve dealt with as a man who is both a biker and a metalhead, I’ve had a lot of “why are you wearing all that black and leather?” And “smile more, take off those sunglasses and enjoy the company!” To end on a good note though, I feel that it is these shared struggles that causes the metal community to be so strong and tightly knit, we all have experienced some sort of issue because of our passion and that makes us strong. Rock on 🤘
I wasn’t able to get a small Halestorm tshirt when I went to their concert not too long ago so I got the only size they had left, large. When I’m wearing it I’ll just tuck it in a bit. Untucked it just looks a bit ridiculous on my 4’11 self. Great video by the way!
I can agree on merch for women. They should always have a female cut shirt with badass logo. Think every gets groped to some extent in the pit or crowd surfing. Straight up apologize for being called poser. Metal heads should b inclusive to everyone. The only posers are Warrant fans @ Ozzy or Metallica shows. One of my best metal concert buddies in high school & college was a badass girl. Don’t really remember her catching too much flak
tool is definitely a fave, just found out about this book maynard james keenan wrote called perfect union of contrary things which I haven't read but sounds super interesting
I love this place in my city that sells exclusively rock and metal stuff. But everytime I tried to buy a T-shirt it is for men and when I search for the size they are always out of smalls so, I have to buy the medium size.
I will say, bands not having merch in smalls is definitely not just girls. I was at a show recently and there was not a single shirt in small or medium so I ended up walking out with a large and now I just have to keep washing it hoping that it will shrink.
Haha yeah I have a bunch of 2XL band shirts that shrank in the wash and were then too small for my husband. They’re huge on me but I wear them as pajamas.
First thing I noticed were the Witcher books lol got into metal living out in chicago back in 16. A lot of friends I made over there were metalheads, awesome people
The Witcher books are awesome, though I'm only about half way through the series. I heard Chicago has a pretty great metal scene. I've never been but hope to visit one day!
I've been playing in metal bands for years, mostly as the front man. I've never owned any band merch before, nor do I have any tattoos or anything of that nature. This has not been a problem for me personally, but I know many people in the scene who place a huge emphasis on image when it comes to their identity. I have to confess that as much as I love seeing these people in the crowd or on stage, I often find in conversation that these types have a very superficial view of metal and prefer the subject matter of the music over the gear, craft, and production. It's important for both of these worlds to coexist, but the image-focused members of the community seem to gatekeep a lot more... Gatekeeping is just a side-effect of passion though, so I try to forgive it except for when it hurts new fans. As far as the groping goes... I witnessed this a few times at different venues. The worst offender was a young guy who looked like a terrible Marilyn Manson cosplay who kept grabbing and thrusting aggressively into a group of girls. One of the girls wasn't having it and sent him flying to the ground, but he just got back up and tried again. Later when the set was over some friends of his were looking for him and got talking tobus. We learned he was autistic and had a hard time navigating social scenes like this, but was a big music fan. It doesn't excuse his behavior but it definitely made me stop and reflect on the large number of people I've met in the community who suffer from mental illness.
The one about none metal heads telling us how to dress happens to me too. A handful of times I've walked around town and I've had a teenage girl walk past me and say "you look like such a twat" and one time in a supermarket some slightly older dude with PINK HAIR walked up to me and did the classic "Gaaayyy" thing... obviously pink hair wouldn't be a problem otherwise, but when I have someone insulting me just for wearing my battle vest, aka just expressing myself, while he's there with his pink hair and apparently that's perfectly fine. No joke, I see way more disapproval from teenagers and younger generations than I do older generations.. the majority of the time the older people are smiling at me and being kind as they always would! But the teenagers are the entitled ones. But, either way I never listen to them anyway and just enjoy myself the way I want to enjoy myself. :)
There’s a difference between a poser and someone that is new to metal, some people just can’t tell the difference
Agreed!
True! I hate this so much. I feel like it discourages people from being part of the metal community.
posers are just willing converts
The world needs more female metalheads. Stay strong. You are loved.
💯yes...\m/
i am one and im so glad i am
i thought there are already many females out there for me its not difficult to find them in daily base particually from the country where i live
A new female metal head subscriber here 🎉
I love seeing women at metal shows. 15-20 years ago it was rare. Now we are finally giving the musicians more respect. There are so many badass women in bands dishing out awesome tunes. Keep em coming!
I agree! Bring on more badass music from metal ladies!
I know there are more... but hail the vocal beast Tatiana Shmaylyuk and Jinjer... freaking love that band. Also like arch Enemy. CRYPTA is sounding pretty bad ass too. Two members were from Nervosa.
Venom Prison.
@@JJMetalhead The girl merch thing is something that needs to be worked on for sure.
I just want more size options, same styles, the shirts are almost always super long on me.
Totally unacceptable behavior.
as a female metalhead, i once worked at the beer bar at the iron maiden concert and the amount of dudes who flirted with me and took up the space at the front of the bar was unbelievable it really sucks bcus i wanted to hear the band and to do my job right
Sounds like a nightmare.
Just say you're trans and 99 percent of them will run away faster than Flash.
So true! Why do that do that???
I'm so glad someone said it haha he's probably commenting on a video somewhere else rn lamenting how "chick metalheads" are like unicorns
@@JJMetalhead the same thing happens in gaming. they want a gamer gf but insult every female gamer they come across in teams. like call her a "12 year old boy" or "man with a voice changer" or even transphobic slurs. yikes.

Thats awesome man you and her seem so cool
At an old job once, this girl came to my register wearing a Metallica shirt. I got all excited and they were coming to my area soon so I said, "Oh, nice shirt! Are you planning to see them in a few weeks?"
She looked at me like I was some kind of degenerate and said, "I don't actually *listen* to Metallica.
@@JJMetalhead For real though! It just gives my socially anxious mind another reason to not talk to people and try to make friends 😭
@For The Love of Metal lol Respect to her though for just owning that and being so chill about it
how is answering your question rude? maybe get used to people not being all excited as you are to talk lol
im a beginner metalhead, recently bought my first electric guitar, and didn't expect so little females liking metal((
im happy to see im not the only one and hoping I'll find a lot of female metalheads in the future😌
Oh wow I never thought I would meet another female Pakistani metalhead. Awesome, so am I.
I never knew that there are metalheads, though you guys have great bands like Jal, Sooch...btw, Hi from India
NO insult intended BUT I thought people in Pakistan weren't even allowed to listen to any kind of Rock / heavy Music
Girllll same, I'm from the Caribbean lmaooooo😂😂😂

@@JJMetalhead Ill keep an eye out :)
This is something I’ve tried to explain to friends since hs, lots of misperceptions out there surrounding goth music/style
Music tastes can influence style choices. Before I started listening to black metal years ago, I had absolutely no desire to own a battle jacket.
I have to say most people I know who dress and identify as goth hardly even know that goth music exists.
@@-47- then they aren't Goth......
Female Metalhead here 🖤
The biggest problem for me is that guys automatically assume that we girls are single and want to be hooked up on..
The only people that don't harass me about smiling are other metalheads 😆
Anyway I'm so glad I found your channel! You're well-spoken and you seem so real. Glad to be one of the 2% now🤘
My family is old fashioned too. Sometimes I hesitate to do the things I want with my appearance because I’m afraid of what they’ll say.
I throw elbows if I have to. lol 😂
As someone that is older and something to look forward to is people saying things like “Oh you still do all that? I use to be into metal when I was younger but it’s too loud for me now”. I am metal for life! lol 😂
I do “the hover” at festivals and if I have to use a portapotty I hold on to the bar that closes the door and do “the hover”… I will go out of my way and stand in that long line to not use a portapotty… also slight dehydration if not complete.
My bigger gripe is being short and having guys bully me out of my spot because I like being up against the barricade. Helps stop you from getting knocked down to be on the barricade and if you make friends with the security they will pull you out if it gets to crazy or help you if someone tries to be a belligerent jerk.

Honestly, a lot of what you've expressed here reminds me of my younger sister. She and I are fairly close, growing up she was influenced by me and my interests so she ended up getting into anime, video games and metal. Why cant everyone just be cool and like what they like. Props to you for the great video! Metal is awesome, it quite literally saved my life.

How wholesome... 😆
You were at a Deep Purple show? You rock. That's so cool.
Did they play Anya?
A few years ago I mentioned to my grandmother I wanted to wear black nail polish. Her response went something like: “Ehh I think that’s too gothic looking, I don’t like that”. Like, it’s literally n a i l p o l i s h
Hahah my dad said the same thing!!
@@JJMetalhead Must be an older generation thing. Also, woah, you responded :)
Well im not a female but at the end off the day if your a metalhead you just have to not care what people think.
I actually think it’s almost up to 2% now! Lol. Thanks for watching! I love hearing from my fellow metal chicks! 🤘🏻
Love this video. Not goth, but my mom told me that I was into “dark” things, recently 😂
Dark things are the best! Thanks for watching! 🤘🏻
as a female metalhead, i've noticed online i tend to act much less like myself, usually with the way i talk and present myself.
I’ve talked to some people when they don’t know my gender and I feel like the talk to me differently after they find out I’m a girl. Sometimes for the better, sometimes worse.
@@JJMetalhead Yess!! This is exactly what happens
That is how it feels like and she had all the rights to feel angry.
@@carmenreichart5054 I agree with you. I live with the shame if treating someone wrong.
I see the Witcher, the First Law, the Stormlight Archive, A Song of Ice and Fire. Great books.
Metalheads do love some fantasy in their lives.
Hell yeah!!
Goth is a music based subculture, so no goth is also not a "style " (there's of course a style that goes with it and it comes from fashion of popular goth bands like The Cure or Christian Death). Just like in the metal scene - It's all about music.
I knew it had to be something to do with music, I just never heard of goth music. Thanks for sharing, good to know!
Thank you! As a Goth myself, I appreciate this comment.
Yes! Definitely!
Was at Obituary last month. The chick to dude ratio was about 1 : 15. Sad state of affairs, metal needs more women! They smell a lot nicer than all the sweaty dudes for a start.
My parents think I'm fake-listening to metal in order to annoy them xD
Also last summer I got a Marduk shirt with the "Slay the Nazarene" design, they kept going and going about how much I need Jesus in my life
The merch thing is SO annoying!
i hate when i say that i listen to many, many other genres other than metal and get called a poser or a not a "real" metalhead, but i think that many people experience this, not just female metalheads like me
Former kpop fan turning metalhead here. I still listen to kpop but mostly old stuff
Hey, thanks for watching! I love Tool, definitely one of my top 5 favorite bands. And yes, I love Gojira as well!!
Im a female metalhead and I tell you it's hard! Gotta build up so much shell to just walk out XD and rate bands wherever from no chance of women merch
i have a thing that sucks about being a female metalhead in an Islamic country - you can't wear what you want; you can't wear band shirts.
I look like your average good Muslim girl when I go out but honestly, I'm not even Muslim anymore. and if I could dress how I want, I would wear band shirts and no hijab because what's the point. I hate it here oof
I’m sorry to hear that! I can’t imagine. I hope you find a place where you can be your metalhead-self!

Yes, yes, and yes!! I love ghost and fantasy books!
I'm a poser I I don't give a damn what you think
Hey I just discovered you and I have been listening to metal for years but just recently brought out the metal in me and it makes me happy to see another female metalhead like me
🤘🏻😈🤘🏻
And the only one out of the girls to have tattoos
Going to check out local bands to see, so wish me luck! Jackie x
Up the Iron from a fellow black Maiden fan!
I am a fan of metal and goth music but I lean more towards metal. Definitely both subcultures are music based, although the music styles are wildly different but I love them both. I’m so glad I found your channel! I have metalhead guy friends but it's really nice to know there are other women who like metal too.
That invention cup is brilliant! I need to get one.
Omg ewww! I’m so sorry that happened to you! DEAR MEN: PLEASE BE GENTLEMEN. Thank you.

Thank you and welcome to the 2%! Keep on being yourself and living your best life! 🤘🏻
The goth community is welcome here too! (Though you’ll have to forgive my utter ignorance for goth culture [I’m learning]). Thanks for sharing!
@@JJMetalhead tysm! And don't worry. Thats understandable. Even I, myself is still trying to learn more about metal community 🤘😝
Everything you said is so true! Especially about merch. One of the things I hate most is the freaking necks, they're so small and claustrophobic. How are we supposed to be breathe in the pit lol 😂😂 also about family, no one understands what it means to be a metalhead. New subscriber btw!
Right?! The neck size - how tiny do they think our heads are?!
Yeah, it's a bummer. But you can't blame them for trying! Haha
Amen!
I may have to try it again. Last time I tried using one of these... let's just say it was a disaster and leave it at that. hahaha.

Hhhmmmm... catholic students who bully, where have I seen this before? Oh yeah... ME.... and then my kid when she went to the same school.
@@JJMetalhead Well, sadly, we don't see each other anymore, because I moved to a different city. So now my situation is very similar to yours :)
Rock on 🤘
I agree that sometimes the struggles we go through makes us stronger as a community (when certain jerks aren't ruining it). Thank you for sharing!
I wasn’t able to get a small Halestorm tshirt when I went to their concert not too long ago so I got the only size they had left, large. When I’m wearing it I’ll just tuck it in a bit. Untucked it just looks a bit ridiculous on my 4’11 self. Great video by the way!

tool is definitely a fave, just found out about this book maynard james keenan wrote called perfect union of contrary things which I haven't read but sounds super interesting
I read it! It's a good book. Tells a lot about Maynard's childhood and the band's origins.
