Best sounding exhaust I've had was headers, 2.5 tubes, h-pipe with new glass packs mufflers. It was deep and throaty. I also have a 3", h-pipe with 50 series flowmasters that sound sweet. Riders always compliment it's sound.
Porters will give you that old school hot rod sound, they have a quiet rumble when cruising but open up and roar when you put your foot in it. And the longer you run them the better they sound.
Older Cherry Bombs were my favorite back in late 70s/early 80s. Last car I put one on was an old '85 Sunbird I drove in the late 90s. It sounded good for a couple of months, esp. when shifting gears. But burned out very quickly, at that point they were so loud they were unbearable. But on my first car, I had cut the single pipe off where the pipes drop down from the stock manifolds and expanded the pipes into dual 2 1/4" pipes, into the Cherry Bombs, and then into 2 1/2" pipes that turned and exited in front of the rear wheels. They sounded great running down the road at about 70 mph, with the windows down.
I had a 350 in an S10 several years ago. Motor was essentially stock with a 327/350 HP cam. Had swap headers, 2.25" pipe and 46" long (yes, almost 4 feet) Thrush glasspacks. Most of the exhaust system in front of the axle was muffler. Best sounding car I have ever heard. Sounded like a big block boat with the pipes in the water. I would start the truck up and just sit behind it in the driveway and listen to it idle. I don't think they make those long glasspacks any more.
In the old days, we had Cherry Bomb, Thrush, or straight pipe. The sounds were so telling as to what level of modification was done to the engine. At the track, most every serious racer ran open headers. Some who had the equipment and ability made their own mufflers. Cut a pipe in half and add baffles. But we also had to work on our carburetor, ignition and timing because we didn't have a computer doing everything for us.
You think there's no work just because you need a laptop to tune your fuel injected car? You're seriously uneducated if that's your belief... I bet you couldn't get your car to idle if you had to build an EFI map, fast idle schemed based on coolant and air temps, timing advance, acceleration enrichment scheme based on engine load and where the engines' operating within the map.
@ did you actually READ what I said ? I wasn't putting anything down about the newer vehicles, I merely stated that We didn't have a computer running things on Our cars of the day. Now, get your panties readjusted from your self imposed wedgie and re read my post, then go and try to simply adjust a Holley Carb if Your smart enough ! Lmfao
Thrush Glasspacks . We ran em on everything in the late seventies and early eighties. Of these i prefer 3" dynomax ultraflo . Dude thank you for the video. Good stuff
I like old school glass packs or cherry bombs but I really think the Bullet mufflers sound more like you are listening to an old school dragster at the track with long tube headers. The first three were a little too tinny sounding but of the first three, I like the oval straight through. It seems to be in order of mild to wild but the only difference I noticed in the last two was the bullets had a more solid sounding exhaust where you literally only hear the engine cam and explosions where the glass packs had a slight echoing under the car giving the illusion that they were in a hollow cavern or something and the deceleration of rpm’s had that raspy sound. Which is cool. I would love to see a part 2 where he puts pipes straight out the back, a full 3 inch diameter, sticking out about 2 inches from the bumper so we could just hear the sound only and not any hint of echoing off the floor pans or the concrete. That would be the only exhaust video/demonstration that would top this one. And this is by FAR the BEST exhaust comparison video on TH-cam. Hands down. Nothing against flowmaster products but they sound like they are inside an empty trash can with loose rusty metal vibrating around. But to each their own I guess. PLEASE DO ANOTHER VIDEO OF 3 INCH PIPE EXTENSIONS LIKE I MENTIONED!!!!! That would be even better but this was the shiznit!! This has helped me decide on the Bullets for sure. 👍
Turbo technology's oval mufflers with it's internal sound reflectors sold in the 80's were crazy. Nothing else sounded like them. Under wide open throttle they were louder then straight pipes and tame at cruise speeds. I study and build my systems from scratch and have tried them all. Today I chose the Spin techs, for their old school idle and cruise note, at WOT they sound like a flat plane V-8 making them unique.
Well to be honest it sounded great with all of them but I think number 3 sounded more mean and nasty than the others. I know that they would sound totally different with different engines setups but yeah love that music! The louder and more obnoxious the better for these old ears 😂❤❤❤
My thoughts. 0:17 - Personally, I like the sound of these mufflers a lot. They seem to provide a more old school sound compared to the third set that you used in this video. 1:37 - (PERSONAL FAVORITE) Compared to the first set, these seem to have a little bit more of a 'crackle' to them (if that makes any sense at all...) I like the sound of these, they don't sound overly loud on camera, but they have a really nice sounding pitch. Might have to use the same type of mufflers if I ever get into drag racing. 2:59 - These seem to be pretty loud on camera, could just be the mic. If you're looking for loud, and these are, in fact, the loudest set, I think that they sound the meanest. Just my personal opinion. 4:33 - Not a great sounding set in my opinion. I prefer an old school sound on a classic car, and these don't fit that bill in my opinion. 5:31 - Not a fan of this set either. Same reason as the last set.
I know everyone has their own opinion. Personally, I have always preferred Thrush glass packs. Over the past forty years, I have had them on a dozen vehicles. Ten with V8s. One Slant 6. And one 4-cylinder (in an '81 Ford Courier).
One more thing, what engine is this? I think that would help everyone listening to make an informed decision. I’m thinking my solid roller 331 Sbc would sound like this. Awesome 😎
I know they are made for imports but you would be surprised at how a vibrant resonator would sound. Most people that use them either just use one or put two in series. I'd be interested to see how you like the sound of those.
I have a 66 Dodge Coronet with a 440 engine. I had Dynomax super turbos and i loved them. Nice deep mellow rumble. I run Ultraflow straight through turbo mufflers now. There isn't a lot of difference at idle. At WOT it really screams. No muffler tickets after 10yrs.
In my old age I usually put BORLAS on my hot rods. When I was younger I liked the louder the better til I finally figured out they make it damn hard to sneak in the house at 3 in the morning.
I liked the super turbos 1st, ultra flows 2nd, glasspacks 3rd, and bullets last. Maybe use the glasspacks or bullets as resonators for the ultra flows. I don't like cars to be abnoxiously loud on the street all the time. Just a little chop at idle to deep and throaty when you get on it and go to work.😊
The super turbo is probably the best "overall" muffler I tested. It has a great idle though a little quieter than I wanted, and it has in my opinion the best sound when you get into the higher rpms and rev it. The idle on the round ultraflows is just too good and seals the deal for me.
Super turbo is the answer. Tried a ton of different mufflers on a ton of vehicles. Always go to the turbos, especially if you drive the car often and at highway speeds.
Now follow up driving sound going by and interior vehicle drone test an engine with a load on it will be different for sure.A droning exhaust will kill the drive thrill
The Oval Straight Through DEFINITELY! Reminds me of the the movie Christine by Stephen King! It's got that junkyard growl that matches the appearance perfectly!
What's wrong with the Continental MKII's or the original Smitty lead pack? You said old school sound, well the old school sound was the 50's & 60's, not the 70's and 80's.
Badass '57! The answer is open headers. 😅 But seriously I like the glasspack sound the best. I'm building a '55 Ford as a nostalgia street/strip car and I honestly think I'm just going to bolt Purple Hornies to the collectors as an easily removable setup that quiets it down some for street use.
Its very straight, but the paint is trash. It suits me well though. Haven't run the 1/4 yet, it hasn't been running that long and im still sorting out carb issues.
You negate all the good part of the exhaust sound when you do not install tail pipes on the car. The tail pipes are very important in the sound of the exhaust because the sound reflects inside the tailpipes and makes the crackle part of the exhaust. You forgot a very very important exhaust that you didn't test and that is chambered port exhaust that they had on the Chevelle's of the 70's
Chambered type mufflers like Flowmaster deflect exhaust flow and rob horsepower. They also generate a lot of heat too. Personally i hate chambered mufflers sound
This is a test on mufflers not tail pipes . I had a pair of just turbo mufflers and they sounded ok then i bought some flowmaster FX which were larger and I wouldn't think it . But their way to drowning .. wish he would have tested some widow makers
You very obviously don't want "old school sound" if you think glass packs sound like shit. The only thing here that sounded old school was the glass packs. Everything else sounded like shit. Edit: The best exhaust I ever heard was Thrush mufflers on a SBC 350 with long tube headers. Except for some drone at a certain RPM, those things sounded INCREDIBLE!

Went through this agonizing decision process myself this past spring. First, I gotta say that your motor would sound great with a tractor muffler on it! They ARE a chambered muffler (disclaimer), and at idle I kinda thought they were too damn quiet... though they DO wake up when you hit the loud pedal. But they do sound good (I think), and the Mrs. and I can talk to each other while driving without getting a soar throat from yelling past the droan. All mufflers get a little louder as they age, so when I get a few thousand miles on these they oughta be just about right. Your mileage may vary...
I hear what youre saying. This car is absolutely way too loud especially with no carpet or padding and the turndowns basically under my ass. But, thats exactly how I wanted it. Pure violence. And, thats why I made the video, to show some choices and people can make the call about whats right for them. Its not perfect, but its basically what I was looking for when I was trying to choose a muffler for this project. In the future, with a different car and setup I will likely do some chambered and more modern styled mufflers.
Glass packs win hands down they are TRUE ol skool cannot beat that sound and crackle love them..
Straight pipes are louder and crackle more.
Old school glass packs sound the best
*Old school straight pipes.

Back 20 years ago, those Summit glasspacks were $19; had one on my DSM used as a "resonator." The straight-through ovals sounded the best IMO.
In the old days, we had Cherry Bomb, Thrush, or straight pipe. The sounds were so telling as to what level of modification was done to the engine.
