What do you think, is it worth that little bit of extra power? Does it sound better or worse? Personally, I think the duals sound better, but it still sounds good. Also, I say X pipe at some point, I meant H. Thanks to all that have subscribed, Im having a blast making these videos!
It can be worth going to an H pipe. Making sure the cross pipe or H is in the right spot is important too. Getting the cross pipe where the exhaust scavenges in each pipe is key to it. Best method I’ve seen and done is to draw a line down the inside of each pipe then run the car for a bit. Then look at the lines, where they melt first is where you want the cross pipe to go.
X pipe is the way to go for sound in my opinion, gives it a much higher RPM like smooth sound..also is the best for power. Most of the time an H pipe doesn't allow the exhsut to cross over once the exhaust gases get moving fast enough..at idle is the only time you notice much difference between true duals and an H pipe.
It's all a trade-off ... I just added a cross-pipe on my '86 GMC for the power boost , but I'm into stealth with this truck . Headers and 2" pipe all the way behind the back wheels with Thrush Hush muffs for sound suppression . It's a "stage 3" 305 , not quite as much cam as yours .
Really just comes down to personal taste. I much prefer the higher pitch scream of my 1985 Vette with true duals and X pipe over the pickup truck growl of my straight piped stroker 383 1970 Vette under hard acceleration. Doubt any horsepower difference between each system could actually be felt.
Love the car, love the channel. You earned yourself another subscriber. I like the spund of the H way better. I would love to hear this car with a set of original 40s!
back about 40 yrs ago an h-pipe was called a balance tube, remember that? the purpose for a balance tube was to equalize exhaust flow so both pipes would burn even. if you ever seen a car back in the late 70"s or early 80"s that had a dual exhaust system on it but after a while one side was missing or burnt off, it did not have a balance tube welded in. I learned this from Car Craft magazine back in the day
The H-pipe definitely smooths it out (to my ears). It also sounds like it’s idling faster. For what it’s worth, I like the raw, crispiness of the true duals. On the street, I don’t know that you’d miss the 10-15 extra horsepower from the H-pipe. Unless you’re looking to race competitively, I’d vote for the true duals.
@@bzster Good catch, it was idling faster, I guess because it smoothed it out so much. It removed that uneven choppiness that sometimes sounds like it's going to cause it to stall.
You are correct, true duals give the best performance, we have tested many muffler's and pipe systems on cars on our chassis Dyno. H pipes or Xpipes increase reversion in the exhaust system, hurts the heads from breathing
I was running a true duel system behind my 460 for a few years and then fitted an H pipe and definitely prefer how it sounds with the H pipe on it. They say to put the H pipe as close to the headers as you can. For me, the closest point was about level with the extension housing of the transmission, just in front of the rear cross member. The H pipe is usually a smaller diameter than the main pipe. My system is 2.5” and the H pipe is 1.75”.
I put mine a couple of inches past where the pipes were discolored from heat . Can't remember where i read/heard that and I don't have enough miles since adding the crossover . Also swapped axle ratios at the same time so this might be comparing apples and pears .

H pipe smooth out exhaust pulses. Depends on exhaust note looking for. Divorced pipes sound old school V8 if that’s your thing. Dyno tests show little difference in HP. In fact using headers plays important part of suction opposing gases and HP gain.
