This is one of those lightning in a bottle moments that will forever transcend history and time. Such a masterful display of musicianship here in this one video.
Joshua is one of the best players of our times. This was recorded in 1994! I saw him last year with his Elastic Band. They performed at the Blue Note. My Trumpet player and I were speechless. JR keeps creatively pushing the limits with his music and jazz.
Freaking right! I was lucky to see him in Seattle on his last visit. He is such an intense live performer. I couldn't keep a smile off of my face for a full two hours. He is really an incredible player.
I really love how this was recorded a year before I was born, yet it feels so new. If it was pop, people would be commenting on how old it was and how they used to like this song. Instead we comment on how good the players are and the techniques they're using etc. Jazz is a way of life! Thanks uploader. PEACE!
Folks, the song is actually called "Straight Ahead." It's a Kenny Dorham composition based on the rhythm changes, with a harmonic substitution or two. Check it out on the Dorham Blue Note CD _Una Mas_.
It's a Sonny Rollins head (with an unforgettable one-note melody) - I forget the name. It's on Dizzy Atmosphere Changes, which predates the Eternal Triangle by 10 years and is a whole step lower.
this set should be recorded in the log of significant events that took place in the 20th century. like a footnote in the next gem's history books. and oh yeah, in '94 blade, mcbride and redman perfectly resonated with the frequency of the universe for several minutes with the utmost groove. and no one noticed, but its on the test
I am sooooo GRATIFIED! That MASTERS - like Joshua and WYNTON - to name a few - REALIZE the INTRINSIC value - to the crux of the art form! Of course; this is a brand new century and the art form, we collectively refer to as jazz, is constantly ' morphing' - necessarily. But the artistry of the past, that some 'listeners', deem "..., old 'tyme'", is YET TO BE EQUALLED!!!
Well refined gimmicks at high speed. Musicality? Not feelin it. Here are 3 examples of high speed players with NONE of Josua's perfunctory squeaks, meaningless octave leaps or other non-musical bullshit: > Sonny Rollins th-cam.com/video/dUou9UlZnz0/w-d-xo.html > Lockjaw Davis with Basie th-cam.com/video/mnEVppghro4/w-d-xo.html Want more Avant Garde??? > Sonny + Don Cherry th-cam.com/video/KnrmxAHVOk0/w-d-xo.html
I think that this is an encore is the most impressive thing. The man must have lungs made from pure steel, and lips made of rubber. I could go on with the examples, but it would be over labouring the point xD. Kudos Joshua, one of the best. Fantastic quartet in general tbh.
He is one of the only players I've experienced who is so well rounded. His ears are HUGE! He plays with such emotion and technically he's a monster. With the passing of Michael Brecker, this world needs players like JR. Although MB was one of the greats of our times. JR is stepping it up big time. If you have seen him live, do it. He will blow your mind.
there is another video with the rest of the song, it has christian mcbride's solo and then brian blade's. its incredible. he is one of the only drummers ive heard who can play melodically on the drums. its aweosme.
Calm down everybody, as a musician myself, I've come to the realization that criticizers DON'T do!! Or, in lay mans terms, haters have never, can never, or will NEVER play!
Me too... same year same thoughts... Although yesterday I saw the group in the flesh for the first time, in the initial setting with Brad Mehldau, and what did they play as an encore? This piece! It was aaamaazing and oh! So joyful!
Wonderful sax playing, very enjoyable. The melody is not clearly heard until about 1:40. I heard Sonny Rollins live in concert performing this song, St. Thomas, about 12 years ago - and I can hear a lot of similarities in certain phrasing.
Jonny King's solo is super underrated. Great development, strong phrasing... it's just overshadowed by Redman. And his comping throughout, especially during McBride's solo, is laying in the pocket really hard. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
You hit it right on the head. Posts about "the best" are ridiculous! The cats at this level are ALL great. It's funny because I was out having beers and a meal last week with Ed Calle and we were discussing this VERY thing. When you are comparing Henderson, Garzone, Margitza, Wayne, Bird, Dexter, Mintzer, Sonny, Lovano, Kenny G (don't get excited...Garrett), etc. you can discuss stylistic and improvisational differences but that's it. The BEST? Throw that word away and just enjoy the groove!!!
Joshua is a talented guy...he always does a great job at recycling the old, 1940s-50s, honkin', party-time sax playing. It's like testifying in church! But, as brilliant as he is, the poor cat was simply born 50 years too late. At least he makes it really fun! Wynton Marsalis has the same chops but seems so because that his olde tyme Ellington jazz doesn't survive outside of high school band festivals. Joshua is of the moment!
Just thought id pop by to say what a load of old shit. 50 years too late? Nonsense. He's playing Black American Music, it's timeless as Bach is timeless. No one shouts that Glen Gould was born three hundred years too late. Then your description of "40/50s party sax" it deserves more respect than that.
No. posting material from commercial DVD's is against my policy. All this stuff comes out of my VHS video collection i recorded the past ten years. The most material i recorded from sveral european broadcastings systems.
I don't know about you guys, but I think these are "Eternal Triangle" rhythm changes. Listen to how the bridge descends in half steps. In particular, check out 8:50.
Its the same chord changes as the song "Dizzy Atmosphere" It's a rhythm changes in Ab concert with an alternate bridge The Changes on the bridge are | A-7 | D7 | Ab-7 | Db7 | G-7 C7 | F#-7 B7 | F-7 Bb7 | E-7 A7 |
exactly. If your here, enjoy the music. If you happen to dislike it then move on to something that your tastes appreciate better. it's all about perspective, there is no way to say who is worse or better. if Justin Bieber gives you the feeling this gives me then so be it.
Joyful jazz playing is outdated since the end of the 50s ! Cannonball, Dex and Wes (Montgomery) resisted, but aren't around anymore. Thanks to Joshua Redman for reviving one of the lost facets of jazz playing.
Blade and Redman seems like the modern day Coltrane and Max Roach. With their interest in musicality and exploration. And simply the excitement of it all.
I totally agree! Plus, if you look at jazz as the language of music (as I do) then classical music is just the jazz of 200+ years ago. As far as being up to date musically... is it fun to listen to? Are people moved by it? Are they all grooving? Hell yes, so how much more up to date can it be than that? :)
I very much like the NY Otto Link. I've used one on my tenor for the last few years, and I believe it to be reasonably priced. The trick is to try it for yourself - and try MANY for yourself. Link's are notorious for having many bad mouthpieces, with a few great ones. The FL Link that Redman is using is certainly one of those greats.
It's nothing new. The played very well. And that is still a fun style to play over whether it is new or not. It is fuel for the soloist. The thing about having to be new is that most of the new stuff is either too free or it's too confined -neither of which is...fun. Give me something fun, I say! This was pretty fun, if you ask me!
Definitely not substitutions. Check out "Dizzy Atmosphere", the melody on the bridge outlines the changes very clearly. And definitely check out the original version of "Straight Ahead", it's from a great Kenny Dorham record called "Una Mas". It's with K.D., Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren, a 17 year old Tony Williams, and Joe Henderson, and it's Joe's first record date.
I agree, Joshua is amazing. I have been studying his music since "Wish"; however, you may want to refrain from talking about "playing rings around Brecker" until you have (at the very least!) listened to the Three Quartets (Chick Corea - Qt. No. 1 (Pt. 1) - at the Blue Note). Start with that one and become enlightened.
@nunchuckification I think he meant the quiet smooth whole range playing. he goes from bottom to top (really fast and smooth) and back down, which is terribly difficult on the saxophone. Redman is an animal! (I'm german so don't look to much at the mistakes^^)
This is one of those lightning in a bottle moments that will forever transcend history and time. Such a masterful display of musicianship here in this one video.
I like the part when he plays saxophone
Joshua is one of the best players of our times. This was recorded in 1994! I saw him last year with his Elastic Band. They performed at the Blue Note. My Trumpet player and I were speechless. JR keeps creatively pushing the limits with his music and jazz.
He does have that wonderful tone and that great technique..The ideas are the most amazing. Can anyone imagine the ideas flowing at that speed.Loved it.
Whoa shit. Joshua Redman. What a sound!!!
Freaking right! I was lucky to see him in Seattle on his last visit. He is such an intense live performer. I couldn't keep a smile off of my face for a full two hours. He is really an incredible player.
amazing!
joshua is the best living saxofone palyer!
I really love how this was recorded a year before I was born, yet it feels so new. If it was pop, people would be commenting on how old it was and how they used to like this song.

Yes!!!!

It's a Sonny Rollins head (with an unforgettable one-note melody) - I forget the name. It's on Dizzy Atmosphere Changes, which predates the Eternal Triangle by 10 years and is a whole step lower.
St. Thomas. There's another killer version of this tune on Joshua Redman Quartet; Spirit of the Moment, Live at the Village Vanguard.
this set should be recorded in the log of significant events that took place in the 20th century. like a footnote in the next gem's history books. and oh yeah, in '94 blade, mcbride and redman perfectly resonated with the frequency of the universe for several minutes with the utmost groove. and no one noticed, but its on the test
This is an awesome quartet. Love the solos!!
I am sooooo GRATIFIED! That MASTERS - like Joshua and WYNTON - to name a few - REALIZE the INTRINSIC value - to the crux of the art form!

He is the man! His saxophone chops are amazing!
👑 👑 thank you for creating this masterpiece!
total control of his horn, awesome, awesome, awesome.
Brian Blade and christian mcbride are one of the best backups such a great soloist can ask for
Love his technique, artistry AND sound.
I love how Josh quotes St. Thomas so much and never makes it old like at 1:59
Genius.
such a MASTER at the tenor!
Holy shit! That bass solo is turning crazier every second!
That was out of this Earth!!!
Man Joshua Redman found a really good link.
Im surprised he doesnt play on it all the time. His tone is super rich here.
love this doxy quote/rhythm changes-massacre! they all groove like their life is depending on it!
Joshua Redman has some of the most well-developed solos of any jazzers I've ever heard.
Well refined gimmicks at high speed. Musicality? Not feelin it.

I would kill to get 2 minutes with those guys. What an amazing quartet. Un-be-fuckin-lievable.
Amen my man.. one of the more well put comments I have yet to read on here... thank you!
He has it all control, tone, creativity, IMHO he is the best living tenor man alive today..
Even without those amazing chops he rules with the huge sound!!!
Amazing from start to finish!
I think that this is an encore is the most impressive thing. The man must have lungs made from pure steel, and lips made of rubber. I could go on with the examples, but it would be over labouring the point xD.
Kudos Joshua, one of the best. Fantastic quartet in general tbh.
Fantastyczna muzyka we wspaniałym wykonaniu.

Jaa!!! Det här är grymt!!!! Bra solo med Joshua Redman
jonny king is SO killin'. it's a shame more ppl don't know about him. crazy that he's also an ivy league trained lawyer
unbeliveable!
redman is the man
one of the best today!
I love his sound on this mouthpiece more.
Joshua Redman is owning the sax right now!!
Calm down everybody, as a musician myself, I've come to the realization that criticizers DON'T do!! Or, in lay mans terms, haters have never, can never, or will NEVER play!
Jazz the most expressive music in the industry ! Every one playing their instrument can give their own expression.Love it or leave it.
Thank you Joshua, thank you Sonny...
This was recorded the year I was born. Christ, I wish I was alive then.
Me too... same year same thoughts...
Although yesterday I saw the group in the flesh for the first time, in the initial setting with Brad Mehldau, and what did they play as an encore? This piece! It was aaamaazing and oh! So joyful!

Kind of Ab rhythm changes!!damn!!SUPER!

DA FUCKING BOMB!!!
Thanks for the great video!

Otima qualidade musical, articulação,e conhecimento andando junto com o aprendiz!
Not too many know this but Johnny King is also an attorney who graduated from Harvard Law School and professionnal fisherman. Incredible guy!
Amazing...
joshua redman, ONE OF MY FAVORITE SAXOPHONISTS!!!!
I don't know about you guys, but I think these are "Eternal Triangle" rhythm changes. Listen to how the bridge descends in half steps. In particular, check out 8:50.
Redman queeeeeeee maestro !!!!!!
jonny king is so killin' and not many ppl know about him.

Great playing. Sounds like Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins all in one.
I loved Coltrane and Brecker now i listen to Joshua.
exactly. If your here, enjoy the music. If you happen to dislike it then move on to something that your tastes appreciate better.
it's all about perspective, there is no way to say who is worse or better.
if Justin Bieber gives you the feeling this gives me then so be it.
You're right, this are the Eternal Triabgle changes.

Blade and Redman seems like the modern day Coltrane and Max Roach. With their interest in musicality and exploration. And simply the excitement of it all.
His technique Is nearly flawless, and his signature tonal quality is all Joshua's

Joshua is the man
dieu que c beau!!!!!!!
Haha love the 'St. Thomas' quote!
He's actually quoting a couple of tunes - "Straight Ahead" - by KD (hence the title) & St. Thomas..
WOW!!! Now that's cooking!
I agree, Joshua is amazing. (I'm german so don't look to much at the mistakes^^)
He threw in Old St. Thomas!!!!!! Man knows how to get down!
fuckin right blade's always on fire
I agree. I saw him last night in minneapolis with his trio. They sounded amazing. Very different from this kind of playing and this video.
He's got chopssssss!
The quote is St.Thomas and it was written by Sonny Rollins.
I often play like this.........then I wake up and realize it was a dream:p
hahaha
Eu amo em ouvir essa música eu amor o começo dela
Wow!
