Why optimize, when you can force people to buy better graphics cards? 😅 Edit: guys thanks for the upvotes! BTW it seems that previous drivers offer a better performance on RDR2! Though it is only reports and I haven't found any video proof of it.
Where is the lack of optimization? This game is really graphically robust and does not require a ton of CPU cores or a super beefy card to play well. A 6 core i7 (AKA a Ryzen 5, as of now anyway) does the job with cards like a Vega 56 at 1440p, which is basically as expected IMO. Did you anticipate the RX 580 to do 60fps + at 4k?

Advice for people on GTX 1070: -Dump all reflection and mirror related settings (yes even water and water physics) to low. -Dump Volumetric Quality and Resolution settings to low (No mixture of settings, must be low) -Don't bother with Geometry nor Grass level of detail (Dump to Zero on scale, from gameplay I still see buildings and grass) -Grass Shadows (Low) Having these main settings dumped solves the biggest FPS problems. Play with the other settings to your hearts content, I can run above 60 with regular high settings on settings outside of what is mentioned. Should say my GTX 1070 is overclocked (1701/1891), so it will vary. Game still looks better than PS4 standard.
Doubt they will optimize it. Ngreedia put out official 2080Ti marketing materials based on RDR2's current perf; they also price gouged those RTX cards, so would not surprise me if they partnered with 2k/R* to inject bloat in order to get people off their 1080Tis, which was marketed as the 4k card in its day and should be running 1440p ULTRA, not the 2080ti which should still be annialating 4k60 a year after release. Tech gets more demanding but remember that the 980ti was marketed as the "1080p 60" card and the 1080ti was the "4k 60/VR" card. The 2080ti should be destroying 4k60fps a year after release.

AMD have ALWAYS had amazing value. People keep saying it like it's a new thing. Even back 10 years ago, Nvidia were already raping people whenever they had a chance. The only time Nvidia had decent value since the 6600GT was the release of the GTX970 at £300 (basic model). At the time, it beat the R9 290 easily in most titles, yet the R9 290 cost £330. So what did AMD do? Reduced their prices within 3 days to £220. That put it £80 less than the GTX 970, but it only performed 20% slower, making it .... THE BEST VALUE. At the same time they reduced the R9 290X to £290, making it not only faster than the GTX970 but also cheaper, while Nvidia was selling the marginally faster GTX980 for £450 all day long. AMD have always been king of the mid range ever since the HD4770.

The Radeon architecture is starting to show its strengths with directx12 and vulkan titles. This includes GCN and RDNA. They will simply age so much better in future games.
People will argue the shit out of low performance cards being able to run high refresh rate 1080p gaming, when it's simply not the case. When shown proof to that effect, those people will blame everything- optimization, game choice, the fucking weather- except for their false assertions. The truth is that when you max out the settings in highly detailed (triple A) games, a GTX 1080 level card cannot reach or hold 60fps at 1080p.
@Johnfuse They already did a great job, the game is running A LOT better now. But still there are some driver issues, especially for the older generation Nvidia gpus.
Thanks. Been waiting for this one on steam for a while. Another poorly optimized conversion from consoles. Lets hope by the time it gets released on steam things are better.
Thank you so much for putting in all this time. This is the kind of community that made me come to PC gaming from consoles, and makes the year wait to play something like this worth it.
Is it actually poorly optimized, or does it simply have higher graphical fidelity than most recent games? That's not really a simple question. In particular I'd like to see how much view distance and foliage details impact. Maybe you can shave some off from the heaviest settings, still be left with a comparatively great looking game, but also match the performance with other titles.
@@AdrianMuslim This has never been proven by any tech reviewer, and there have been many of videos checking this old rumor out.. I think people love to jump on hating the big corporations whenever something goes slightly wrong, but you have to realize optimizing so many GPU skus including cpu/ram/etc. combos is hard work and expecting it all to work flawlessly on day 1 isn't that rational, especially from a company such as rockstar that have had terrible PC ports under their belts.
@Russell White LMAO! Alright bro, ill trust your anecdotal evidence over giant tech reviewers like Gamers Nexus, LTT, Techpowerup, who put hours in to benchmarking and testing multiple setups and cases. You're right!!
Thanks for including the RX 580.. It's still a great card, tuned settings allows mostly "high" presets at 1440p to run 50-60 fps for almost all new games. This aspect, and especially the 1080p performance, should be highlighted more often.. $115 for a nice used card, in today's market, is just unbeatable value.
Yeah, I picked a reference one up for $300( used) awesome deal I thought , did the washer mod, cracked the Fan speed to %45 and overclocked it to 2050, it kicked some ass. I'm happy, gave my 2060 to my kid. LOL he will be happy when the only game Nvidia is going to have for them when Minecraft RTX comes out.
I am not a gamer at the moment, but did like the first game on my xbox and was looking forward to this one, but my GTX 970 looks like it would struggle at a decent quality, Thank you for taking the time to work through all the benchmarks, You compress so much work into these videos, but the amount of time and effort needed is incredible. FWIW: I had to tune up a client's PC for this game(drivers and graphics settings mostly) and it is quite playable on an i3-8100/RX570 4GB @1080p.(High settings except for medium on shadows, volumetrics, SSAO, and reflections. TAA enabled, no MSAA/FXAA. ROG Strix RX570@1300mhz) Benchmark avg. is 72fps, with in-game fps typically in the mid 60's with no stuttering/drops/hitching. The 570 is pegged @100% constantly, with the i3-8100 fluctuating between 70% and 80% usage balanced across all 4 cores. The game is gorgeous, and I'm quite surprised with the performance on this hardware. Hopefully my experience gives some of you hope for your 'low end' systems as well.
Checked the HUB video, performs slightly worse than the 5700XT with DX12. Expected a bit more, seems like 8GB is needed, but also enough for this title
The card performs very well on RDR2. I saw a 4K ultra max benchmark taking almost 14GB of VRAM at barely playable frames. However, the 1440p performance is fantastic and good enough for me. This card keeps on giving.
Your hard work is much appreciated. Thanks for all the information. Hope you have a chance to get some rest. P.S. Why the fuck would someone downvote this video. People suck.
It's obviously impossible to drop any marginal graphics settings to get stable 4K 60 or to use a 2080 Ti to play at 1440p 100+ FPS. I'm sure 2080 Ti owners are super disappointed.
LOL , you noticed that too... it seems they updated a lot of stuff from the consoles, except that... I felt like I was in minecraft a few times with the cheap foliage.
check out grass on "ultra" in GTA5, youve got single leafs casting shadows there but it kills performance down to 40fps even with 80ti's, guess its gonna take a long time until we see those fabulous outdoors raytraced scenes with weaving grass and all ;)
Me, playing RDR2 on PS4: Can't wait to play this exactly same game in 60fps on my perfectly okay rig, if it comes out. *checks for news almost everyday for months and wait for its release when announced* Me now: Guess I'm back to PS4, since I have to play on low (worst than PS4) so I can reach like 45fps. @@toddsimone7182 Exactly! Retards keep spewing out "it's just 10fps more" or shit like that. 10fps more or what? 1fps? 100fps? 1000fps? At what resolution? 720p? 8K?
This is what I love about pc players. Console players just play the game. Pc players finally get this game a run a whole host of test and spend hours pouring over small details. I love it! Keep up the good work. Thank you.
Very very thorough. I did my own benchmark with my aging 1080 (non-Ti) and it seems to fit around the 1660 Super in Vulkan (though with slightly lower lows), which is nice. Though that was before updating to the new drivers this morning so I should probably re-test that.
Nice video. For anyone wanting to play at 4K, I definitely recommend setting resolution scaling to somewhere between 80% and 90%. At least when playing on a TV with a bigger view distance. This will give a lot of headroom to get a stable FPS or increase the settings. The game has great upscaling + sharpening and the resulting image looks great. .. Another good tip is to play with your display at 50 Hz, if it supports that (most TV's do). Obviously it's slightly less smooth than 60 Hz, but it's close enough, and again you regain some GPU power to spend on better settings/stable FPS, and still don't have to worry about tearing (combine with VSync and or borderless windowed mode).
@@kalle8960 Have you even tried it? 60 is not some magical number you know. 55 or 65 would be pretty much impossible to see the difference. Except there are no displays that support such a refresh rate, so the display runs at 60Hz and the game at say 55, and then you get judder because of the conversion. At 50 FPS + 50 Hz display (don't skip this!) you avoid that problem completely and the difference with 60 is not huge. Especially when playing with a controller.
I ran the same "high" settings on my Radeon VII, and my findings were generally between the 2080 Super and the 2080 Ti. This is a game where the Radeon VII really excels.
Rockstar had plenty of experience from making Grand theft auto V on PC, there was no good reason too delay "Red Dead Redemption 2" on PC. Most people I know are now boycotting Rockstar & Ubisoft titles going forward in 2020, both companies are burning too many bridges....
@@nutterztube "The Outer worlds" has been fun so far, also if you are into racing games, there is a new Codemasters: "Grid" reboot(both are good games). How sure you are about it? Do you think nVidia will pay Rockstar Games to make 1080ti worse? Try different drivers and tell us the difference. Same hardware, same game, no gimps, just more optimize in rtx series to run newer games. No matter if you change the driver.
Not necessarily drivers, just how the game is delevoped, show me some benchmarks where a 2060 super or even a 2070 super and 5700xt is destroying a 1080ti like it is in this game.

I think GN methodology makes more practical sense. Settings shown at start of video are reasonable.
Sander L I don't think the testing methodologies are any different. An In-Game Benchmark should represent In-Gameplay in any case, no matter how long the duration is. And according to GN Steve, this is more or less true.
Vulkan runs better, unless you have some of the prominent issues that some people are reporting. If you can use it, use it.

For a game like this, I have to turn off the FPS counter or I will just obsess over it and constantly change settings lmao

This is by far the best HW channel on youtube. Screw LTT clowns, they deliver funny content but not accurate. Keep it going!
Advice for people on GTX 1070:
-Dump all reflection and mirror related settings (yes even water and water physics) to low.
-Dump Volumetric Quality and Resolution settings to low (No mixture of settings, must be low)
-Don't bother with Geometry nor Grass level of detail (Dump to Zero on scale, from gameplay I still see buildings and grass)
-Grass Shadows (Low)
Having these main settings dumped solves the biggest FPS problems. Play with the other settings to your hearts content, I can run above 60 with regular high settings on settings outside of what is mentioned. Should say my GTX 1070 is overclocked (1701/1891), so it will vary.

The 5700XT is an amazing value

Nice video. For anyone wanting to play at 4K, I definitely recommend setting resolution scaling to somewhere between 80% and 90%. At least when playing on a TV with a bigger view distance.

Watch dogs legion is gonna be a flop since Ubisoft had to delay the game which tells me it was full of [micro transactions] & cut content- the same as "Ghost recon: breakpoint". When it comes to future tiles to look out for "Death Stranding" & Cyber Punk 2077 on PC would definitely be worth your money.
Gamer 1: I'm getting 60fps 1080p high
Gamer 2: Well I'm getting 60 fps on 1440p on high
Me: You guys are getting into the game?
Your outro sound brings back good memories :)
Thank you for doing this and not waiting for R* to fix the optimization. People need to see how little work R* put in to this game after having a year to make it not suck on PC. Again, thank you
I'm disappointed my 1080 ti doesn't perform as well as I would like considering it is usually on par with the 2080/2080 super
C by GE light bulb It's more on par with the 2070S as of recently.
Make that rumor that Nvidia gimp their older card to pop up again..
They gimped the 1080ti, I'm sure of it. It's still the most owned top tier card
I'm a happy RX 5700 owner lol
Imagine the disappointment of all of us, the lesser brethren, with 1070/1080s...
when 5700 can perform close to 1080ti u know something wrong
Nvidia lowering performance in their old cards to force people to buy a new one "wink wink"
Not the firs time that they do it. . . Back when the witcher 3 released they did the same to the 780ti where it got shat all over the face by the 960 in that game.
More just being lazy and not working on old cards if you want a card to last definitely go AMD
My 980 ti now has the same performance as a 100$ rx 580... Thanks R * for working on optimization for a year
A lot gpu test, but not the Rockstar recommended gtx 1060 6gb,why?
Yeah, it seems a big omission. According to steam, nearly 1 in 7 gamers are using a 1060 - it's still by far and away the most popular GPU.
@Verity Seeker01 I think Nvidia make the updates that u can't run the games on old gpu, red dead launch, than Nvidia launch a update, Rockstar make the game and I think they testing on a lot gpu, so when they put recomendations gpu gtx 1060 6gb, they have sure that this gpu can run the game on 1080p - 60fps, that I think.
I have a GTX 970, and the fact that you can play RDR2 with mostly high settings at 1080p I find really impressive for a 5 year old card.
Thanks for including that card!
got a gtx 980 ti and its overclocked i think im going to have a better chance to run everything on high at 1080 ofcourse..
i love you
Love to see the gimping of the 1080ti............glad I waited for benchmarks on this game. I will most definitely not be buying it nor a rtx series card...
If you have 1080ti.. can test using older driver? Example version 39X.xx to see any gimping haha
I own a 1080ti and a 5700xt is not comparable to a Nvidia flagship card even if it's one generation old. Along with the 2060 and 2070 beating it, I have the game for the Onex and was considering getting it for pc but this kinda just shit the bed for me
How sure you are about it?
Do you think nVidia will pay Rockstar Games to make 1080ti worse?
Try different drivers and tell us the difference.
Edit: Dont you think nVidia isnt doing any "gimp" they just stop optimize the older cards, they optimize for the last generation.
I think both amd and Nvidia are in their pockets pushing for the newer gen cards because most people have the 10 series and the 20 series isn't selling like they wanted hence the 40 different cards they have out .
If only we could enter the game, the launcher itself always crashes
For me updating the bios fixed the launcher issue. I have a MSI b450 Tomahawk MAX.
Shido8
For me, giving my antivirus exception rules to RDR2 worked, though, it crashes some times still when playing.
I guess the game is too advanced for our peasant hardware.
Have you seen the video with max setting at 4k of 3dOc channel? 20 fps with 2080 ti lmao . SOLID Boy
I don't know if this was a joke or something but 2080 Ti is not peasant hardware.
Nope. I have hp OMEN and the game is laggy af.
That's some in depth testing, well done!
thank you so much i was waiting for a video just like this
I Miss the 1060 6 GB in the chart, considering it's still pretty common
Please add Radeon Vii in future benchmarks.
Yeah! There's at least 3 of us with them!
@@twistedtomatoful guru3d has rdr2 benchmark out and it is slightly above the 5700xt
this game is crushing gpu price to perfomance
the truth about the level of greed, i guess nvidia is holding back performance just like intel
Or RDR2 is just really poorly optimized.
@@LinkinLTU Or, the game is too graphics heavy. You know, like games can be and not all games are not NOT OPTIMIZED. Did you say Crysis is not optimized?
@@ark_knight lol 'too graphics heavy' you realise that still is called 'optimisation' you dont add in graphic settings that even high end hardware struggles to push. that means the baseline for 'what can run this setting' is none existent right now. so there is zero need to have the option in the game. hence 'optimisation'. Crysis just proves my point lol it had features and graphics that were to far ahead of its time that nothing could run 'well enough' aka the graphics were not optimised for the current generation but more for 'future' generation hardware which is honestly stupid.
@@123TheCloop I see you know a lot about what graphic features they are using in Red Dead and thats why you think the game doesn't have enough tech to push the current hardware huh? Good on ya.
First time hearing of a poorly optimized console port, I guess.
Damn. You guys seriously earned my sub. Looking forward to more Red Dead content
IDK If you've already done something like this, but if you could make a video about what each "setting" means and how it affects the gameplay vs GPU demand. For me, I feel like i have a basic understanding but some of the settings options i have NO CLUE what they do or how much they can effect performance!
Thanks for this vid
The gimping of Pascal has begun
So what I'm hearing is my 970 isn't gonna cut it 😔
I been using 970 since 2015 even now i can run games in 1080 60 in med/high settings its a such a good card but it isnt capable of ruinning lock 60 fps in recent games, Im about to upgrade to 2070 super, If u need better graphics in terms of price value i recommend 2060 super, Its cheap and almost same price of 970
For some reason, my GPU has low usage while playing. Does anyone else have this issue?
rig
i7 7700k
gtx 1080
32 gm ram
Thanks for the quick benchmark !
