As a Volvo tech.. Yes, the EX30 is the biggest pile of crap shit garbage we've ever seen in our showroom/workshop. Do not be fooled, they (coroporate HQ) are already preparing us with 'educational' courses for the EX90; how to lower customer expectations, major product issues, LIDAR not working etc. The list goes on. Volvo has become a much watered down version of its former glory. I carry Volvo in my heart, all of my family members each own Volvos. But they have really lost it since the XC40. Speaking truth from the heart. Unless they change course rapidly, it will be lost and just become a consumer Chinese throwaway massively overpriced product and I'll quit working for the company. And I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this.

I love Volvo. I've owned loads of them and worked on the Pride in Volvo events in 2016-2018. The new SPA models I thought at the time were superb, but... I'm now hearing about quite a lot of engine failures with those cars? I have driven the EX30 and it's awful. Put another manufacturers badge on it and it could be anything. There is far too much tech in it which makes driving such a car anything but relaxing. I am frankly staggered to hear that one of the training courses for EX90 is about 'how to lower customer expectations'! I bet they're not lowering the price with it though. All this does not bode well for the future of this great marque. Very concerning.

I agree completely. I'm hanging on to my diesel S80 until it collapses, which hopefully will be in a long time. I feed it Ravenol oil..correct spec and good diesel. Took it for the mot the other day, and the technician looked confused when he checked the gases..then he repeated the test. He had never seen a euro 5 diesel giving such a low reading. 280000km. Wonderful cars, but the last of the true greats😭. Mine has had the life battered out of it. Towing trailers (1500kg) up mountains in 38° c heat..I live in the picos de Europe. Never a problem.

I well recall how well thought of Volvo quality was in the '60's and '70's....EVEN in the U.S. rural South. Volvos were known to be as durable as tanks and were respected for that. And the fact that if you disable it, it's back on by default every time you start the car. And the fricken' beeping any time it thinks you're too close to something. After a month of appalling email and phone exchanges with Volvo UK I cancelled my order telling them that if they were not even able to sell cars (what they are meant to) I could not imagine how they would solve a basic car issue in the future. The current fix is...
    1. Switch car off, lock it.
    2. Take fob away from car and let it sleep for 15 minutes.
    3. Go back to car and hope it has reset itself. Call roadside assistance if not.
    4. Book car in for software update at dealer. Wait weeks for the appontment.

He said something along the lines of 'If you don't want to be bothered driving, then get yourself a BMW 8 Series.'

With an EX30 you don't even start it or switch it off. You don't even unlock it as the fob has no buttons! You walk up to it and it not only unlocks but starts! You just put it in drive and go. To switch off you just put in park, get out and walk away and it switches off and locks itself. I work in the software industry. Personally I find that great software requires deep thinking and an alternative style of working. Most companies make the mistake of considering their developers as a resource instead of artists. There is this totally incorrect ethos whereby management often comprising of failed developers effectively continuously hounds their developers for due dates which are only based on guesswork. They give these management techniques fancy names that become a science in itself, while in the meantime the developers just take shortcuts to tick the box in the artificial time frame. Once you put all these components together they are not going to deliver the experience the users expect.

It has a physical key, 2 litre petrol engine, full-size spare provided, buttons for basic aircon / heater , switch for headlights. The infotainment is via screen but you can ignore that while driving. It has annoying safety tech beeps, lane keeping etc but you can ignore that. Very happy so far because it’s quite basic compared to most new cars.

I got a courtesy car. Current model. It bonged at me for around a third of the journey home. I've had advanced training, so crossing lines for a better view or straight lining a roundabout is something I've been formally trained to do. And every time, the car bongs at me. Whenever there's a speed limit change coming up and I'm doing my observations before changing speed, it bongs to distract me and make me look at the dash. I go to over take a cyclist and the thing bongs because that's when I need distracting. It reads the speed limit, gets it wrong and bongs CONSTANTLY.
Worse, when there is something of need of my attention, I ignore it (scream at it with passionate hate).
This stuff needs to go away and I will be removing fuses or disconnecting speakers if it becomes mandatory.
I can not drive being constantly distracted. It's not safe or sensible and I can not ignore it. I'm one of these people who doesn't even have the radio on.

It drives great, it's quick, practical, looks great and is comfy. Had no problem adapting to touch screen controls. I haven't needed to change settings while driving. Have yet to test Volvo's warranty. Only annoyance's so far are the over sensitive indicator stalk and auto braking when manoeuvring in tight spaces (yet to discover how to turn that off). Typical modern product marketing.. they give you less, charge you more and tell you it's better.
It reminds me of video recorders towards the end of the technology, they all went nuts with the remote, competing to add the maximum number of buttons that will never get used. Marketing guru's must have used computer modelling to act on that one, sometimes they were even hiding extra layers of useless buttons behind sliding doors on some. Nowdays it costs nothing to make pages and pages of touch screen options that all rely on fragile software and complex (but cheap to manufacture) hardware which demands the user navigating the mental maze to find anything and control it, and then they sell it as a feature...

Volvo were told about the lack of controls by me before the car was launched in the UK. The Motoring Press also panned it for the lack of buttons. Now I drive an MG ZS EV, first gen, it has all the buttons that my Passat Estate TDI had and in the same places. No problems, Tesla started down the track of electronic buttons and whilst it might suit long boring drives in the US, European roads are different, hence we prefer stick shift in the main. Let us hope that Volvo revisit the design and bring it out with buttons. It is otherwise a nice car. BUT, surely their target market for the EX 30 is second cars and small cars for the retired, it doesn't need crazy acceleration it needs to be a capable and efficient car with affordable insurance!

Only allow the dog in the boot of a hatchback or estate - not in the car (you may have to make sure you have the right car of course). Get a liner for the back area so the dog is not touching anything except the rear hatch (which they tend not to go too near). I also have an old towel the dog sits on that gets washed and an old piece of carpet on the floor to catch dog hair. A cage to to stop the dog putting their head over the back seat.

Simple to operate is good. It is safer.
I like having a key - it goes into a slot and stays there, happy and content and out of the way - even better, if the battery in the key fails the key still works.
I like indicators on a stalk (why anyone would do any different is nuts, virtually no one wants anything different).
I like having a gear lever (not buttons or a round thing) because I know from feeling the position of the lever what gear/direction is set.
I like having a spare tyre - every so often it becomes important.
I like simple switches for windows, mirrors, wipers, hazards (some hazzard switches are poorly located), headlights - no it's not "I like" - it's essntial these things are simple switches. (I think it should be in the design rules for wipers and headlights - I am pretty sure it is for hazards)
As somone who has a partner and daughter who both mess with the A/C in strange random ways making it easy to return it to rational settings by having knobs is a good thing.
