Thank you very much for this. I've never stopped listening to Acetone and I guess I shouldn't be surprised there are others that heard the same brilliance I did. Truly one of a kind, in one sense or another. I just discovered the unspeakably well written bio by Sam Sweet, 'Hadley, Lee, Lightcap'; that someone would research the subject of a mostly forgotten rock band as thoroughly as he did is truly a blessing to understand what the catalysts and inspirations were that resulted in such beauty.
super cool to learn about this so much deeper. mark was my mentor for my art internship. super, super cool and genuine guy! so blessed to have worked with him.
I have a soft cool vibe playlist on Spotify and “Shaker” came on. Decided to go on a random deep dive. Wow! What an amazing band with an amazing vibe and such a tragic ending. Thanks for making this video. It’s very touching. So glad I randomly decided to do a random deep dive. What a band!
After Richie's death, Lightcap toured as Hope Sandoval's guitarist in 2002 and then left professional music forever. He spent years as the lead fabricator for the artist Mike Kelley, who he knew from their days at CalArts. He also occasionally releases a track from his longstanding group the Dick Slessig Combo, like this masterful 42-minute take on "Wichita Lineman": th-cam.com/video/MorgJwbBhe4/w-d-xo.html Sam Sweet wrote a fantastic book about Acetone called "Hadley Lee Lightcap," available from his All Night Menu publishing company.
acetone and duster, two of the greatest bands never known. well at least duster has come back to life the past few years. the last acetone compilation album is pretty great.
Well done. Very informative. I don't know how I missed these guys back in the 90s. I was a huge fan of Verve and Mazzy Star and even had access to a great college radio station that surely played them. They went completely under my radar. I looked into them after reading a review in MOJO of the comprehensive box set that was recently released. The review name-checked the aforementioned bands which made me wonder why I didn't know who in the heck they were. I'm discovering them now and really enjoying the music. I contacted an old acquaintance/fellow Verve fan back in Atlanta to tell him about Acetone in case he, too, had missed them. He texted back that he saw Acetone open for Verve in Atlanta in '93. What a show that must have been! Acetone pairs well with the modern bands Rose City Band and Color Green, for anyone who hasn't discovered them. Cheers.
I have CINDY album since 1996. Somebody gave me their album and I always like it. I was like 14 years old back then and as everybody know it was REALLY hard to find info about new bands in those years, no internet like today, no TH-cam and no Google especially in Latino America, I'm from El Salvador and it was so hard to find new music there. Now I'm living in NJ and still have their cd. Nice video!! 🤘🏻👍🏻✌🏼
Amazing I was drawn here... after showing my homie hjol a couple years ago he made me a playlist (“S L O W C O R E” on Spotify)... finally got around to listening to it and ofc fell in love w this band I’d never heard of... was just seeing how, watching this vid, hjol is direct descendant of acetone. ❣️❣️❣️
I LOVE ACETONE. Been a fan since 1994. I met them in 1997 in Pontiac Michigan opening for Spiritualized & chatted with Mark & Steve for 30 minutes. I am thrilled about this mini bio, but I COMPLETELY disagree about your analysis of the Cindy album. It's nearly a 90's shoegazey version of Todd Rundgren's Something / Anything. It's a classic. All the various styles presented on that album shows all they were capable of. And making a senseless point about the commercial aspects of their art is just missing the point. They were ARTISTS, not bandwagon wannabes. And, learn how to pronounce MAZZY Star, jeez
Nah, "Ass-uh-tone". It's a highly-flammable solvent; we use it to clean off pieces of stainless steel, titanium etc etc every day at work. On the contrary, Mazzy Star is most definitely pronounced "Mah-zee Star"; not "May-zee Star".
FINALLY!! SOMEONE OTHER THAN ME RAVING ABOUT HOW AMAZING THIS BAND WAS!!! We need represses of their music STAT!!!!
New West Records has answered the call ! ENTIRE catalog reissued !!
@@racializedkanadian thank god honestly

Mark Lightcap is still playing music. He is in a group called The Ecstasy of Gold. They released an album on Bandcamp in November 2022.
@@hobocakesboth lightcap and Hadley are in it apparently and it's actually pretty damn good

Apple Music recently added lyrics to almost every acetone song, as well as introducing their older albums like Cindy to the platform. Pretty cool
You can find Drummer Steve surfing in the ocean on his Bonzer.

have you ever noticed how "Return From The Ice" sounds a lot like "Ugly Brunette" by horse Jumper of Love?
Never noticed that! They do sound pretty similar, tonal wise they’re completely different though.

CINDY is my favorite. It took me a minute to get into their subsequent albums
damn i love your slowcore series. how about talking about the poster boy of the millenial sadcore and slowcore, Lana Del Rey and Cigarette After Sex
Surely it's pronounced "Ace Tone"?????
