My buddy was dating Matt's cousin and she found out I was a huge fan. She went to a family reunion and I told her to tell Matt hi and his music is great. When she came back she gave me an autographed LP of YPAA that Matt was gracious enough to give a complete stranger. Love Hum.
Matt Talbott is a music professor at my alma mater! I got to travel to Italy with him as part of our university's study abroad program. He is the coolest, funniest, most brilliant human being you'll ever meet. I'm glad to see that love for HUM is shining bright.
I can't believe Bryan St. Pere is gone. He was a massive influence on my playing early on my life. RIP, Bryan, heartfelt condolences to the family and his bandmates.
Bryan St. Pere used to come into my music store to get his kid drum lessons. We talked a lot while he was waiting for his lessons to end. Really laid back dude. I liked him a lot.
Inlet is fucking brilliantly heavy and melodic. Always loved the heavy punch of stars but never really listened to anything else from Hum. Then I saw inlet while searching for some new music and can’t put it down. A lot of people comment the the songs are too long, but they’re so good I never really notice. It is SO incredibly rare for a band to write something so amazing so long into they’re career. One of my favorite albums period.
I totally agree with your whole statement. I accidentally found it 2 days after it was released here on YT(for once, thank you YT algo!). Almost 2 years since it was released, it's still my favorite Hum record and has become one of my all time favorite records. I first heard "Stars" on my car stereo in '95, and I swear to God, I pulled into a record shop parking lot while the song was still playing, went inside and got the ONLY copy of "YPAA", pulled out into traffic 5 mins later and blasted that album for months, while turning my friends on to it who are also still big fans. I just recently finished a binge on "Inlet" that lasted 3 weeks. Those long songs are incredible compositions with surprising and unbelievable transitions and just massive riffs, and then there are the lyrics..... just a beautifully heavy, spacey, THICK record. Great album, all the way through. As a drummer since childhood, Bryan St. Pere's playing heavily influenced my style and I am still sad that I'll never see him rock these songs in person. R.I.P. BSP, your heavy-handed style and grooves are missed, brother.
Chino personally invited them to perform at Dia de los Deftones in San Diego in 2019. The whole lineup that year was pretty awesome, but I would have gone just to see HUM and I ran into a number of people who were there just to see HUM play, some coming from as far as New York.
@@Hoochypoo I know this comment was 3 years ago around the time Inlet was released- but it’s still true. Inlet will be (is?) the centerpiece of the modern heavy/post hardcore shoegaze movement- no one did it better than Hum
The new HUM album "Inlet", believe it or not, is amazing and probably their best overall album ever. This guy is crazy, it literally is a perfect HUM album.
"I'd like your hair long" is one of the greatest songs ever of any band... So many different aspects to it that are wonderful... dynamics... arpeggios... heavy guitars... and lighter guitars (they weren't really clean, but not overloaded with distortion... not sure what to call it).. and the drum parts were amazing... I've loved this song since I first heard it. Thanks for putting together this history vid!
Probably my favorite album of all time. Of any band. There’s nothing like listening to DiH high while laying on the couch. I cry during Isle of the Cheetah and Afternoon with the Axolotls every time. lol
Inlet, by far best post-metal/prog/space rock album in years. Perfectly balanced in darkness and melodic form. Truly amazing and contemporary sounding, for the amount of time between albums. Highly recommended for listeners who are looking for something a little challenging. It gets better every listen.
I started getting in to alternative rock around the mid-'90s and Stars was one of my favorite tracks early on. Dating myself completely, I had a hard time remembering band names, so I walked in to a record store and asked the clerk for the album with "that Stars song". He directed me to a giant book like a huge phone book and we manually looked up who did songs named "Stars" and HUM was the first thing that popped in to my brain as we went over the list. We went over to the "H" section and looked through the rack and he said "Oh, sorry I don't have the one with Stars, but I have their new release they just put out" - Downward is Heavenward. Looking through the tracklist I recognized a couple songs (Comin' Home and Green to Me were getting a decent amount of airplay at the time) so I went ahead and bought it. And of course I fell in love immediately. It wasn't long before I tracked down YPAA and even E2K (I bought it off of Amazon back when they only sold books and music). I connected with the social scene and even found other similar bands I fell in love with over the years. My only regret is not being able to see them live while Bryan was playing with them. My friend (who I also got in to HUM) and I intended to go to the 01-01-01 'final' show but being young and having no money made that impossible. We finally got to see them when they were touring with Mineral while Jason Gerken was drumming. It was amazing to see them but it wasn't the same. They're still my favorite band. I'm glad with what we got since we're probably not getting any more now that Bryan is gone (RIP). It would be nice to get a few of the deep cuts like Inklings and Invisible Sun (a Police cover which from my understanding was recorded and finished for the X-Files Movie soundtrack before being bumped at the last minute by Sting's crappy reggae version). Matt's side project Centaur is also incredible and has a lot of common threads with Inlet. There may be more Centaur on the horizon now that HUM is completely finished. On the other side, Tim Lash has a side project called Glifted which is an acquired taste but again, carries a lot of DNA into Inlet as well. And of course, Jeff Dimpsey is probably better well known as bassist for National Skyline which also had moderate commercial success.
A great band. And Inlet is a fantastic new album. I feel so happy I made a point to see them live in the late 90's. Reading that Brian St. Pere has died is heartbreaking
I grew up with HUM. "You'd prefer an astronaut" and "Downwards is heavenwards" are both some of the most important albums of my life but I have to disagree about "Inlet". "Inlet" is Hum's Magnum Opus. It's the bands best release to date and also one of the best albums of the decade. Especially the long songs are masterpieces. I listened to it so many times and it never gets boring. I am obsessed with this album.
I remember as a teen hearing Stars on the radio and it blew my mind. I had You’d Prefer an Astronaut on cassette tape and wore it out in the car. And although Downward is Heavenward didn’t pull me in when it released, over time it really started pulling me more and more and is my favorite HUM album. Inlet is growing on me too though.

Great video! It has always bugged me that Hum never got the credit that they truly deserved. In my opinion, Downward is Heavenward is an amazing album, better than You’d Prefer and Astronaut. Don’t get me wrong, they’re both great albums but DiH nails their sound. Inlet blew me away!
I worked with Tim Lash and his brother at Willys Pizza in Champaign 1990. Tim was about 19, I was 21 so I would buy them beer. Most importantly, they played all kinds of great grunge in the kitchen. They introduced me to Soundgarden, Dinosaur Jr, Naked Ray gun, etc. Amazing times!

You should do a video on the band For Squirrels.
I got into them through inlet, spotify just played it randomly one day and I was really blown away by how heavy it was. I'd heard of them before but I never actually bothered to listen to them, they fucking rule
rest in peace bryan, one of my favorite drummers ever
This band can never be talked about too much
Electro 3000 is one of my favorite records ever. As well as their newest album, Inlet. So good.
2000**
Definitely an underrated band. I still love the guitar tones.
“The band is back in 2020 and is going stronger than ever before.” It really sucks that less than a year later they broke up again due to Bryan passing away would have loved to see them. Matt is doing his solo shows but I don’t think he really does them outside of his bar or state. One of my favorite bands ever such a unique sound they are even more influential than some of my higher ranking favorite bands.
Thanks. Great information
*WISH YOU TOLD US HOW OLD THEY WERE WHEN THEY GOT TOGETHER. A VERY YOUNG LOOKING BAND, KIDS* _HEY THEY PLAYED LIVE ON HOWARD STERN SHOW 1995. RARE FOR LIVE BAND ON STERN, E-SHOW, 92.3 K-ROCK BACK THEN_
Didn't even mention how Bryan was discovered from a window as he was playing to a Rush song in his apartment
Appreciate the info.
I simply cannot get into Inlet, though. It feels like Torche B-sides.
Criminally underrated band for sure!
