So late to this party. The Vanilla Sky soundtrack introduced me to Red House and Mark. Such a beautiful piece of music and if you havent seen the movie Vanilla Sky or Open Your Eyes you're missin out.
Wow, and I thought I was the only person on the planet who knew of Mark's genius before his friendship with Cameron Crowe thrust him into mediocre fame on Almost Famous. You can feel the pain in his lyrics, a pain that every adult American male has felt at some point on their journey to and throughout adulthood. The purest form of genius is he.
They were quite well known before Almost Famous. They were signed to 4AD and had been making records for like 10 years by that time. I like them okay but I don’t think Mark fully blossomed until Sun Kil Moon’s first album “Ghosts of the Great Highway”. Everything is better on it. His voice is much better, the music is far more dynamic, there’s no filler songs like their used to be all over the place, and even the mix is better. The early 90’s stuff sounds super dated now. “Songs for a Blue Guitar” has a few tracks that showed the melodic direction he was gonna go in, and Old Ramon had the dynamics sort of. But yeah “April” is also amazing. “Ghosts” and “April” are among 2 of my favorite albums ever but nobody else seems to see them like I do. Everyone likes the newer stuff where he rambles in stream of consciousness. Doesn’t do much for me.
The red house painters came back to Ohio for at least one show that I know of and in that show we got to hear mark sing grace cathedral park acapella. It was an unexpected treat and really awesome.
NOTE: This video was completed before the allegations against Mark Kozelek came out. I know the timing is awkward, but just keep in mind it was purely coincidental and I know the band may now be soured for some.
I love old 90’s album covers and stuff. It reminds me of the South Park episode where Cartman starts a Christian Rock Band and he takes them to the beach and tells them to all stand looking off staring into random directions for the album cover. You know they told mark to look off the side.
Thank you for making this. I’m actually glad you made it before the allegations around Mark came out; whether they are legit or not (I feel they might be, but still) the music still means more to me with every passing day. I honestly don’t think there are many bands who have such a consistent quality of output, as you said. And it’s plainly obvious that even severely flawed human beings can make great music that nevertheless resonates and heals people the world over. When I’ve written my best songs, I’ve had the strong sense that the music was coming through, and not from, me. What I’m trying to say is the music is always divine, always as perfect as it sounds to your heart. Really, the sordid things that people get up to in day-to-day life could not be less related to the divine beauty that is great music. Thank you. RHP forever. Oh and I’m sure you know of them but check out Desertshore if you haven’t - it’s basically the RHP under a different name IMO. One thing that should be mentioned are their early demos. Especially the unrelated track 'headsore' it is an incredibly ambitious song and I recommend any fan to check it out. They were intensely devoted to the band's sound since the beginning.
I know I’m late, but I love the three second or so cover at the beginning. Could someone tell me what it is? I’ve listened to it like ten times already.
It really seems as if Red House Painters didn't actually break up. They essentially just reformed under a different name to get out of the issues with the label. Many bands have done that over the years. Red House Painters was a great band. It's a shame they never got picked up by a major label. They had the talent, but never really had any major backing. They built their audience mostly by word of mouth. I was introduced to them after hearing "All Mixed Up" on the closing credits of an Alicia Silverstone movie that I can't remember the name of, and Kozalek himself through seeing him in Almost Famous. I looked up some of their other work, and loved nearly everything.

Red House Painters died when *Gordon Mack left. I tried looking up his personal website again but couldn't find it. But back in the mid '10s, I remember coming across it and he did detail his time in RHP's stating that the band was increasingly becoming what he termed as, "the Mark Kozelek Band". Personally, I'm in agreement with this b/c after Ocean Beach, the latter RHPs releases are no longer constituted of complex song structures or carefully picked single-notes, nor slow-ish drumming. Mark Kozelek was obviously the 1 trying to always stand in front and assume creative control. It just isn't the same after Ocean Beach 😢
In the early days of RHPs live performances, Kozelek did not want to play guitar. Gordon Mack’s primary role in the band was to duplicate MK’s guitar parts for shows. Mack had essentially zero to contribute to the band’s sound. Though a competent player, he did not contribute anything to the songwriting process or to the direction of the band. He was not a Johnny Marr to Kozelek’s Morrissey, nor a Page/Plant, etc. Had Mack been a genuinely noteworthy guitarist/composer, he would likely have introduced ideas that would have become RHP songs. He has no songwriting credits. Slim Dunlap died a few days ago. He brought some good stuff to late Replacement’s , like Achin’ to Be. Mack never brought anything to RHP, no chords, no riffs, no ideas, nothing. Mack is a fraud, who has tried to pass himself off as an integral part of RHP. He never was.

The part that sucks most about for me is how you can almost tell it's caused by his wish that was still young. He's probably so bitter at his age and it makes his advances towards those young women creepy. Listening and reading a lot of his lyrics of the past ten years really do bring up mental images of a man who would say something akin to "Man, I used to get so much pussy." (Which, by the way, is almost verbatim from one of his songs. I can't recall the name of that one.
